Day 6

Dean knew something was not right as soon as he saw his father, and not just because he was alive when Dean himself had lit his funeral pyre. There was something off about him, beyond being back from the dead. Then it dawned on him. There was a strange tint to his eyes...they were glowing yellow in the dark. There was only one being he'd ever come across that had eyes like that.

"Azazel."

"Aw, you caught on so fast! Nothing gets past you, Dean..."

"I thought we'd exorcised you from the face of the Earth for good."

"Oh all kinds of things are coming back from the dead these days, Dean. You'd know all about that."

Dean thought about asking how John had come back, but he doubted Azazel knew. Demons didn't have that kind of power, not even princes of hell. And he couldn't trust a word that came out of that snake's mouth anyway. He would regret possessing his father again, though.

He pulled Ruby's knife, the demon-killing knife, from his sleeve.

"You think you can fight me, boy? All by yourself?"

"That's the thing. I know my dad's in there fighting you just as hard as I will be out here. I can see it in your eyes."

Azazel twitched and grimaced, almost imperceptibly, but Dean saw it and knew he was right. John was still in there. He lunged at the demon. They danced through the house, the rooms familiar to Dean and yet changed, the refurbished building not quite the same as his childhood home. Azazel threw Dean against a wall and he got right back up and charged, knife held out, slashing at the air. This back and forth went on for several minutes, though it felt like hours. Dean was gaining the upper hand, and just as he made a final lunge, John's mouth opened wide and a cloud of black smoke poured out. Azazel was escaping, and it happened too quickly for Dean to pull back. The knife plunged into John's heart.

Elsewhere, Rowena was unsatisfied. She was starting to realize that hitching her wagon to the most powerful being around was beneath her. She wanted to be her own boss. She was powerful enough, she didn't need anyone else. Winchesters, demons, angels, even Lucifer. She was done with all of them.

But her plans did not account for the fact that Lucifer liked having a powerful witch on his side. He'd found her companionship just as useful as she'd found his, and he was not pleased when she tried to abandon him.

Unfortunately, she wasn't quite powerful enough to withstand his wrath.
