I assume that many people who applied to one of these schools most likely also applied to the other. If accepted to both, which one would you choose and why...lets assume the money is the same for the sake of the argument.

I have been accepted to both schools, and although both have EXCELLENT facilities, great reputations, and a really happy student body, I have chosen Jefferson for the following reasons.
1. Location- Jeff is located in Center City, a great great location in Philadelphia. I've lived in around philly for undergrad and have always wanted to live in Center City. It's fun, not VERY expensive, and Jeff offers on campus housing if you so desire. I live with my fiance, so we will be looking for an off-campus apartment, but the on-campus ones are quite nice!
2. Grading system- Jeff is Honors/Pass/Fail. I'm really looking for a relaxed and supportive environment. I love that I won't have to worry about a traditional grading system at Jeff. It also has all the notes already given to you in the beginning of each module, which is pretty sweet.
3. Happiness of Students- Both Jeff and Temple students seem extremely happy. I have close friends at both, and they all LOVE their respective schools. This one is a tie I suppose then- lucky us!
4. Jeff Hope Clinic- I am very interested in serving the community while in medical school, especially in my first and second year when I do not have clinicals. This clinic allows first and fouth years to pair up and serve in pediatric, ob/gyn, and homeless male clinic. I think this is a great, great experience to gain early.
5. Money- I KNOW you said that for the sake of argument, assume both cost the same, but for others who may be looking at this thread, I figured I would address this point. For out-of-staters at Temple, the tuition/fees is $51,078. For all students at Jeff, the tuition/fees are $44,547. Although it is only a differnce of $6531, over the course of 4 years, this is more than $26,000. For those of us looking at LOTS of undergrad debt and who have no financial help for medical school, this is a substantial difference.

Both are great schools, and you should be proud to go to either. I know I will be! Hope this is helpful- Good luck in your decision 👍

You definitely make excellent points, and yes I think the money should be addressed for sure, but as you answered also, its nice to see a point of view without worrying about the money initially.

I was also accepted to both schools and Jefferson did stick out above Temple, mostly for its location and campus-type feel. It's just nice to hear the opinions of other Philly-bound med students about the respective schools.

A lot of Temple students either live in Manayunk or Center City which can be up to a 45 minute commute (depending on the schedules of public transit, traffic, etc).

Jefferson students can either live in the on-campus housing or within a 5 minute walk.

At least for me, the last thing I want to be doing after a night in the library is riding public transit for over 30 minutes.

+1 Jefferson

45 minutes from center city to broad and ontario? that's a bit much. let's say around 30 minutes, but that wouldn't change the fact that that makes the commute more of a itch than going to jefferson/living in center city

I'm a huge fan of temple and did a lot of work there and the faculty is absolutely great, residents are helpful, med students are happy, patients have personality and **** is popping. neighborhood is rough but some people (like me) love it.

but as someone pointed out, the difference is around 7 grand a year and + extra for commute if you want to live in center city for schools in the same city so why go to Temple if you aren't absolutely in love with the area/population/specifics of the school.

If you are OOS, I bet that you will end up going to Jefferson. That school is pretty much designed to attract people from out of the area. Temple faculty are all diehard Philly natives.

Get yourself a Roy Halladay jersey and some crown fried chicken and go watch always sunny. You'll be straight at either of these schools.

Not all of Temple students live in Center City. From what I have heard a fair amount live in Manayunk (which is where my student host lived) We had to leave 55 minutes before his first class in order to make it on time so I don't think 45 minutes is an exaggeration at all.

I believe that in terms of convenience, safety, price, and overall opportunities available, Jefferson is the place to be 👍

Does Temple do instate after a year of living there? I know many schools do this... thoughts?

I wouldn't see why PA wouldn't have a policy like this one, seeing that many other states do. Might be something to email them about though, I am sure they could give you a better answer.

States definitely differ on their "resident" policy...that being said, if you could have Temple in-state tuition, that would be a large factor to consider...

Many other states do not consider you a resident if you are living there purely for educational purposes. I've interviewed all over, and so far, the only state I've been to that allows in-state tuition after one year of school is Ohio. Pretty positive that Pennsylvania (and thus, Temple University) does not offer the same.

NY and California do as well... but you have to live there (i.e. don't disappear in the summer) for a year at least...
