Texas A&M (TAMU) c/o 2022 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I used the same one. I had to email them about the GPA because since then I took another course (biochem, eww) but Jaime said not to worry if it was a bit off.

So I can use the one I had in undergrad at TAMU? Great! I wasn't sure if it was a new number or if I would just use the same one. Thanks!

I didn’t go to undergrad at TAMU and Yolanda said not to worry about the UIN right now so I’m putting N/A lol.

Also- the purple (acceptance form) and orange (consent waiver) forms go in the pre-labeled envelope to the Dean’s office (not Admissions)? I already sealed the envelope and just want to make sure lol

Does anyone know if we get a confirmation from admissions that our acceptance forms were recieved into the system? Or do we have to call to confirm with Yolanda?

Hi y'all! Does anyone happen to have an idea of how far down the OOS waitlist usually moves, or when it starts moving? Any OOS people know if they're going to be turning down an offer?

The waitlist varies from year to year. For example one year it went to number 22 where the year I was accepted it only moved to 7. I would say if you are in the top 10, then pretty much plan for school. However, the wait is excruciating as you may not hear until April.

There’s some upperclassmen in the page.
I am a 3rd year. The Facebook pages are designed for the classes and current classes and upperclassman are on the pages to offer help so that may be why the numbers seem like more.

I am not sure if we get a confirmation, but I'm sure Yolanda could tell you if the office received your paperwork. I can ask if accepted applicants get a confirmation when I drop mine off tomorrow!

I mailed mine with a tracking number and it showed it had arrived about 5 days ago. I am not sure if we receive a confirmation from the school, but I plan on making sure when I visit in a couple weeks.

So we won't get a confirmation letter, but you are free to call up to Yolanda's office or the general office of admissions and ask if your response has been received.
They'll be getting back to us about background checks anyways, so if you aren't concerned about paperwork going through they'll be contacting you at some point for other c/o 2022 items.

Around when does the review of our application (for interviewed but rejected/waitlisted applicants) take place and is it only an in person thing?:joyful:

Last year it was May 19th. Yolanda will send you an RSVP email in late April (if I remember correctly from last year) If you are not able to make it, Yolanda will send you an email with an individualized form that indicates your strengths and weaknesses relative to the successful applicants this year.

Is anyone else applying for the anatomy summer course? I just mailed my registration form in and hope I am able to participate.

Went to TAMU today to get my first rabies vaccine. It was the cheapest I could find it $284 v. $350-500 at home. Going back tomorrow to start house hunting!

Were you already a TAMU student? I was told I couldn’t make an appointment at the TXAM health center for my rabies shot until I get my UID number. I called admissions and was told I would get the UID # in the the official packet which won’t be in till first week of May. It’s cutting it close, but I’m going to wait to do mine at the health center to save the extra cash. I was also told we only have to have the first rabies shot done by May 31st.

Sort of. I went to their Galveston campus for my marine bio degree and happened to remember my UIN. When I went the first time she (woman in the offices across from the check in amd check out stations) told them to temporarily add me as a student since I'm not officially a student again until classes start in August. I'd call and ask again before driving if you live far, however, May isn't that far off. Rabies is a 3 series but took about a month. It's the Hepititis shots that are really spaced out. Hope that helps or PM me

Does anyone know if TAMU has any opportunity to pursue a combined DVM/PhD? I saw on their website (from back in 2003 and then in 2006) pages mentioning the dual program, but nothing since then. Any current students know about this?

Are you in the class FB page? There’s a ton of current students on there so you may get a quicker answer there.

Hey! Quoting y'all just in case you have time to look at my questions 🙂 I'm trying to decide between A&M and another school, so I was wondering if any current students could give me any insight into their experience. I have a whole list of questions that I'll just copy and paste here, so if you have the time I would really appreciate any answers to any of the questions! I realize y'all don't have experience with the new curriculum, but if you have any information on it at all or if you could share your experiences based on the old curriculum, I would appreciate it!

How much freedom do you get to explore your specific interests, both in classes and in rotations?

It seems each semester is mostly a few 4 to 6 credit hour classes covering general topics, as opposed to a semester with a lot of 2 to 3 credit hour classes covering very specific topics.

  • How do you like this setup? Do you feel like the curriculum is organized at A&M?
  • Are there enough exams and other grades to help buffer your GPA, or do your grades come mostly from a few big exams covering a lot of material?
  • How often do you have exams?
  • Are there any subjects that the curriculum seems to favor?

Do you feel like you get enough education in microbiology, infectious diseases, surgery, or dermatology?

How much hands-on experience do you get, and how early?

What do you think of the anatomy courses? What resources exist to help you with this course (or other courses?)

How solid of an education do you feel the core curriculum gives you in equine medicine? How about food animal?

Do you know anything about the fail rate at A&M? Do you feel like the curriculum is manageable?

Is it difficult to find affordable housing close to the school?

Edit: Also what's your opinion on a more integrated curriculum? Pros, cons? Do you think it's a good thing, bad thing, or just depends on your individual learning style?

Hello! For your first year, you don’t have many opportunities in class to explore specific interests, you have the opportunity to do that fall of your 2nd year when you get to pick your first electives. The main purpose of first year is to just get a general knowledge of everything, especially when talking about physiology and anatomy. There is a class you take first year that is specifically focused on exposing you to different careers in vet med that many wouldn’t think of. They have started mentor panels, which is where they separate students based off of a survey given out asking you about your career interests, and then put you and similar students with faculty that are in that given area (such as small animal, mixed, large animal, equine and alternative groups). I personally have really enjoyed the mentor panels because the faculty have been great and give good advice and connections to other people they know that are in the field you may be interested in. If you’re concerned about getting experience in other fields during your first year, there are also several clubs that do really cool wetlabs and meetings designed to get you experience you otherwise wouldn’t get. The new curriculum has been great so far with a few complications here and there (because it is new and some things still have to be worked out among faculty), but in terms of integrating information together it has been really good. You get hands on experience much earlier now than you do compared to many other schools. For example, we learned how to place catheters by our third week of school and got to place catheters in live dogs by our fifth week, in addition to many other hands on experience with live animals through other courses. I know many other schools don’t give that opportunity that early in the curriculum. There are plenty of resources given in all classes, including anatomy, such as interactive videos on various websites and several resources that professors post on moodle. It is not difficult to find affordable housing close to the school, and there are many students currently in the curriculum that post their available rooms on the facebook page. Overall, the curriculum has been welll designed. It gives you a lot of hands on experience early on, gives you the foundation of knowledge in all areas of vet med, and while vet school is very tough and wil become your life, it is also manageable. Hope this helps, if you have any more questions just let me know!

For those of you older than 22 who have gotten your bacterial meningitis vaccines before, are we still required to have another one? Or are y’all just getting it anyways? I had my last one in 2012, but am over 22. I’m just asking because that’s a lot of vaccines to get at once

I'm 24 and after looking at the bacterial meningitis sheet, my doctor decided I didn't need another one. I sent off all my vaccine paperwork 2 weeks ago and I am kinda just banking on them contacting me if I did in fact need it.

Did your doctor still fill that sheet out or did you just not submit it and submitted your vaccine records instead?

He did fill it out the best he could. I was told by the nurses at Student Health Services that the form was incredibly old and depending on the vaccine protocol your pediatrician/physician followed, that some of the blanks might not match up well. My doctor just improvised and I submitted the vaccine records as well.

Did you end up getting your rabies vaccine at A&M?

Yes! Each vaccine was $284, but I had SHS file them with my insurance company and my insurance negotiated the price down to $188/vax. The nurses said they can get the vaccine for cheaper because they can buy it in large quantities as they go through them quickly, unlike most GPs.

Oh ok I’ll do the same then! Thanks!

I'm 28 and had my BM shot back in 2008 before my undergrad. I didn't have to have them fill it out, I just sent the blank one in with a sticky note saying I'm 28 and had it before (couldn't find the documents though). The nurse at Beutal at A&M immediately told me we didn't need it if we were older (especially having it before).

Is it pretty feasible to maintain a part time job throughout vet school?

Is it pretty feasible to maintain a part time job throughout vet school?

I know a few people who worked at TVMDL, held student worker positions around the school, were radiology techs in the hospitals, or were techs on the weekends. It's definitely not impossible. I'd say trying to find a job around the school (like these) will be your best bet as your employers will be more open to letting you study on your down time. I'd even post this question on the class facebook page and see if anyone who has worked through vet school can offer any advice/job opportunities!

Has anyone received a welcome packet or anything aside from our acceptance packet?

Hey guys! I’m trying to claim my NetID - it asks to enter my UIN first ... where would I obtain this number ?

Hey guys! I’m trying to claim my NetID - it asks to enter my UIN first ... where would I obtain this number ?
For me it was on the paper instructions they sent in the welcome packet

Howdy, FutureDVMco2022!

Your UIN may be a little difficult to find, but it should be on the page labeled "Claiming your NetID" which should have your first and last name in the upper right hand corner. The document is numbered from 1 - 6 with a screenshot of the Aggie Account Gateway (in big white text on a maroon-tinted background). Directly below the screenshot, see item 3. Enter your UIN: _________. That nine-digit number is your netID/UIN/student ID number.

After following the rest of the directions, the paper instructs VM students to email Yolanda (6). However, all other problems with activation or NetID login should be forwarded to the CIS Help Desk at (979) 845-8300. Hope this helps. The whole NetID thing was definitely a challenge for me when I first came to A&M!

On a different note, would any of y'all be interested in forming a study group once the summer anatomy workshop starts up? I'll be taking a different preparatory course, but would love to track with you guys while the workshop is going on. If you're new to TAMU, I'd also be happy to show you around in the time we're studying.

DM me or post here if you're interested!

Has anyone heard back from Yolanda regarding the CVM account? I've emailed her twice about it (she was out of town the first time) and I have yet to hear back.

I had issues because and had to call since my UIN was set as my account NetID from my undergrad. I also emailed Yolanda twice and haven't heard.

I'm totally open to a study group. I bought a 65" Clevertouch interactive touch screen whiteboard to make studying easier. I am waiting until I get keys to my new place before I mount it on the wall. Currently building a study table. https://www.clevertouch.com/

Is this the same as the email account?

Yes and no. Once you have set your NetID (which they suggested should be first initial (f), middle initial (m), full last name --> fmlastname), it will become your university email (fmlastname @ tamu.edu) that is gmail based. I did undergrad and graduate school at TAMU so I've had my @ tamu.edu account for about 6 years, but the vet school has always done things differently than main campus. They have a CVM email account that is Outlook based (this may have changed recently... but I don't think gmail). That's the email address/account Yolanda will set up and it will look like fmlastname @ cvm.tamu.edu.

Got it! I accidentally logged into the @tamu.edu but I'm completely new to A&M but this makes more sense. Thank you for the clarification!
