Question: With my stats, I really don't know that I have a chance? AACOMAS didn't include math as a science course in the GPA and so my science GPA is LOW :( My BCPM GPA on AMCAS was 3.21 and AO 3.51. My science GPA dropped because of 3 poor grades (2nd semester of organic chem, 2nd semester physics and biochem).

Question: With my stats, I really don't know that I have a chance? AACOMAS didn't include math as a science course in the GPA and so my science GPA is LOW :( My BCPM GPA on AMCAS was 3.21 and AO 3.51. My science GPA dropped because of 3 poor grades (2nd semester of organic chem, 2nd semester physics and biochem).

Question: What were your other MCAT scores? Many schools will not just take most recent/best scores, and instead will average them. For example if your other scores were 490, 493, 495, 496, your MCAT would be 493.5 at most schools.

Your EC's look fantastic and may save you. I think its important that you have something distinguishing yourself from your other applicants.

It was good that you applied broadly. Overall I'd say your chances are not good as many schools have a sub 500 MCAT screen, but hey, give it a shot and see what happens. You never know, and with those EC's you might just get in somewhere.....

Idk man i think you might be better off taking some real time to figure out whats going wrong with the MCAT instead of applying this cycle. You could also retake all F/D/C coursework to boost that science gpa to 3.6 to compensate for that low mcat.

Let's see what @Goro thinks about your situation. I'm not sure it would be best to apply now, but he's the expert.

I've already applied to many, so we will see. If not this year, then I will plan on retaking my MCAT and spending more time studying. I considered a post-bacc, but my advisor said that my overall GPA is fine when math is reported as a science.. AACOMAS doesn't do that though and it clearly depends on the DO school...
 
I can't sugar coat this: I can't recommend med school. You have yet to master the MCAT, and are at high risk to fail out of med school and/or fail boards. I can think of at least 11 COms where you're be auto-rejected. Even LUCOM has standards!


Time for Plan B.

And no, I can't recommend a retake either. You have clearly plateaued.

Right, no DO school will take math in the sGPA, however, your advisor is incorrect with the post bacc advice. You could do a DIY post bacc on your own in order to boost your sGPA over 3.6 to compensate for that low mcat.

@Goro, what if he does a DIY post bacc and raises sGPA and cGPA to ~3.65? Will it compensate for those MCATs for entry at maybe 1 school?

The thing is that I've never had any issues with other tests. Also, I was working 60 hours a week during my three month Kaplan course for my MCAT, and previous 3 times, I tried to study on my own. Kaplan helped, but I always fell behind. Maybe if I took a hiatus from my job and then studied? Dedicating the time would SURELY be of value for me..

Right, but the only thing at this point is that you've taken it four times, and even a stellar score wont cut it if some schools average. I'm not trying to sound discouraging, and I apologize if I sound that way. Personally I think your best option is to retake all F/D/C coursework in a DIY post bacc, get those GPAs as close as humanly possible to 4.0 each (to compensate for those MCATs they should be pretty darn close to 4.0 each), and apply as broadly as possible.

I know people really don't like the idea of the Carib, and no one recommends it, but if you think you could make it through that, then that might be your only option. Its a HUGE risk though, as you might be unemployed and in debt if you don't make the cut.

I have considered Caribbean schools. I think I would make the cut. I am really good in school otherwise and I have revamped my study habits with my advisor since my MCAT, so that's why I think a retake would be improved and maybe even with additional coursework to improve all my stats. Also, I have worked with physicians who graduated from the Caribbean schools with great things to say..

@Goro really knows what he is talking about. However there is one thing you have to make sure!

Were you studying a ton of time? Did you give ample time for the MCAT? Did you give it almost everything you had?(Like studying hours every day for weeks-months). Or was it maybe an hour a night when you came home from work exhausted? Did you use your resources properly? Understand one thing, the MCAT is not like any class you do well in. When you do well in school, you can study for a day or two and get an A or a B. The MCAT is not like this for most people and many people have already said this about the boards. That essentially the MCAT can indicate whether or not you can actually get by the boards because that is what matters for the first 2 years.

Again you really have to be honest with yourself. Were you giving it everything you had(or almost everything) using your resources and times wisely. or Were you just ill-prepared?

Because if you did study a ton, put tons of hours, do a ton of work, and highest was a 496 which is 37th percentile, then you may want to consider not going down the med route until you fix whatever issue you have with the MCAT because the Caribbean is a very risky choice which even if you make it past the board, there is a MASSIVE chance you won't ever practice medicine.

If you can't fix the MCAT, maybe go down a different route. RN, PA, or even podiatrist

it is time for plan B. Honestly no school will touch you with those four scores. Maybe look into podiatry, but even then it's not a given. Do not go into the Carib. You are the type they prey on for a tuition check and then they will fail you after a semester or two, if you can't break a 23 on your 4th try then maybe its time for a real hard look in the mirror about your ability to eventually pass Step 1 and all the future licensing exams. There comes a point when you have to face reality, and, unfortunately, I think it is that time for you. Honestly look into Pod or nursing, they are great careers.

I'm wondering, what is a good score for the MCAT to be an indicator to pass the boards? I got a 504(127/123/127/127) and that's because I bombed a section I did best at on practice tests somehow. Is a 504 a good indicator that I have a chance to pass the boards? I keep hearing about the boards and it worries me D;
 
Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but even a 5th time MCAT re-take can't really show anything to adcoms (in my opinion). I believe you should look into podiatry, since they are still similar to med school and you get to do surgery. Their standards are low because it is not well-known profession, but I believe it holds the same difficulty level as medical school.
Honestly, I do think it is time for PLAN B. Just my 0.02 cent. You can still wait to see how this cycle goes, but just a reminder, podiatry cycle start early August.

@tony101 well, according to AAMC, score higher than 500 indicates you will most likely to pass board. Many medical students in SDN say the MCAT related to board score, but who knows... I tend to believe AAMC more.

The research shows that below a 24 is usually when you get in danger of that. Your 504 is like a 28 and could have been higher except you had one low section so don't even worry about not passing boards! Interestingly enough I saw some data that also shows that your board score is only correlated to your MCAT up to a about a 27 and then it doesn't matter.

Once you start getting to high 20s, the the red zone is over. Research has also shown that a average scores for multiple test taking is better than a single good score. I'm afraid that hoping for a shot out of the park isn't going to save OP.

While one can devote lots of time to MCAT prep and do well, one don't have this luxury in med school.

Usually verified means the completion and recognition of a primary app by AACOMAS. When one is "complete" their secondary has been processed by a specific school.

Every school is different to be honest. Some schools take months. I submitted my application for MU-COM mid July and just BARELY did they say "Oh your file is complete and now you are under review, wait 4 more weeks". So it can take months for them to properly review you.

Well like the above poster said every school is different. One of my II's I got the same day I got the complete email. I was shocked. Must have been a slow day for apps that day or something.
