The Official "How Does This Schedule Look" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just had my scheduled altered so now its this:

General Biology I & Lab (4 credits)
General Chemistry I & Lab (4 credits)
Calculus I (4 credits)
Advanced Composition (3 credits)
Introduction to College Studies (3 credits) <--- Just an orientation class

I'm a bit concerned with calculus though (I suck at Math) :scared:

I would be weary of taking 18 credits your first year. Does your major require calculus? Do any of your future classes require it and thus offers incentive for taking it early?

I always heard it was a requirement for some med schools and I didn't want to close doors by not taking it.

It's becoming less and less required, but you can always take it during a different semester to minimize the amount of stress your first semester. It's always better to take it slow and protect your gpa than rush and fall down on your face.

When I look at this I only see 15 real credits. The orientation should be a breeze at least that's what I feel like.

I feel that this is fine.

pretty sound advice.

I highly recommend Neuro to look up the orientation class or its teacher on myedu or ratemyprofessor and gauge the difficulty and time commitment.

Fall 2011

Principles of Chemistry I
Chem Lab
Basic Bio II
Bio II lab
Calculus I
Buddhism

fall 2011

cell biology
microbiology
cultures/peoples of africa (anthropology course, required)
medical anthropology
biology seminar: developmental and bioethics (half credit)

Does anyone think it'd be useful to add anatomy? My only vice about it is that I feel like my schedule will become a bit over the edge with cell biology and microbiology.

Does your micro class include a lab component, or is it just a lecture?

Not as useful as cell biology. I would stick with this schedule, but if you think you could handle it, add it and then on the first day of class decide whether it will be too much work (after seeing the syllabus, schedule, etc..).

Written English I (ENGL 101)
General Chemistry I w/ Lab (CHEM 207)
Fundamentals of Mathematics (MATH 101)
Animals as Organisms w/ Lab (BIO 209)
First year "experience" Biology (BIO 150)

= 15 credits

Didn't submit IB credits, so hopefully the 101 courses will just be easy refreshers. 🙂

P.S. this is just for the fall

What is Fundamentals of Mathematics (MATH 101)? Algebra, trig, or calculus?

There is a lab component but it is not required and I decided to opt out. I already have research experience, and the lab time conflicts with 2 of my other classes that are necessary to take. Plus I've just heard negative things about the micro lab at our school...

Will probably opt out of anatomy. If possible save it for next semester. I want to focus on volunteering/clinical shadowing as much as I can this year.

Yup. My IB math course (and this was the lowest level IB math course offered as I suck at math) went up to calc. Easy A right there (plus it's a pre-req for stats which I need for my major and is also a requirement for my bs/md program. No calc required 😀)

I'm taking 19 hours as a BME major in the Honors program.
BIOE 1100 - Intro To Biomed Engineering - 1
BIOL 1161 - Intro To Biol Science Lab - 1
BIOL 1361 - Intro To Biological Science - 3

MATH 1431 - Calculus I - 4

General Chemistry 2 +lab (4 hrs)
General Physics 1 +lab (4 hrs)
Cell Biology (3 hrs)
Human Diversity (3hrs)
Biological Rythms (2hrs)
Junior Seminar in Biology (1hr)
Applied Guitar 2 (1hr)
Grand total of 18 credit hrs. Worried about Gen chem 2....

Neurobio I
Neurological speech+hearing
Biochem
History of sci,medicine

=12 credits

I'm going to be a junior and I'm a prospective MD/PhD applicant.

Fall 2011:
OChem II + Lab (1.5 credits)
Biochem I (1 credit)
Physics II Lab (0.5 credits)
History of Science dist req (1 credit)

Total of 4 credits (normal load at my school is between 4 and 5)
I'll also be taking an MCAT course (test date Jan 2012) and working in a lab

Spring 2012:
Biochem II (1 cr)
Biochem Lab (1 cr)
Cell Bio or Molecular Bio (1 cr)
Some form of bio lab (0.5 cr)
Research (1 cr)

4.5 credits

Questions:
Should I take cell bio or molecular bio? Cell bio is really tough at my school (really high workload) but molecular bio is not. I'm really leaning towards molecular bio not only because of the workload but I'd also like to take a more in-depth look at mol bio (my intro class was interesting but not that in-depth). Does cell bio look better on my application?

Thoughts?

THIS FALL!

History of Western Civ. -3units*
The High Middle Ages -3 units*
Physics II- 3 units
Physics II lab- 1 unit
Organic Chemistry I -3 units
Organic Chemistry I lab- 2 units
Science Education Partners in Biology- 4 units**

*The first two are for a minor, I'm a bit of a history geek. Namely western medieval age
**A part review class for 2 semesters of biology, part outreach program to teach K-12 kids biology [taking it for the field work experience it imparts as well]

Need some opinions.

Transferring to a new school next month(Texas A&M). Here's what I'm thinking of taking.

Bio 214 Ecology/Evolution 3 crd
Math 147 Calc for Bio Majors 4 crd
Nrsc 320 Sensation/Perception 3 crd
Chem 102 Gen Chem 2 Lec 3 crd
Kine 198 Strg/Weight lifting 1 crd
Hlth 236 Racial/Gender 3 crd
Total 17 crd

this fall:

orgo chem 1
intro physics with calculus
genetics
human development and family studies
linguistics and the mind

taking these classes while volunteering at a nearby hospital, hopefully shadowing and doing research for a work study job

shouldn't be too bad no?

Very nice. I wish my school offered that.

Very nice. I wish my school offered that.

They require 2 credits of Kine classes. I'm already a personal trainer so it should be easy A.

The only thing is that A&M has like a 3 drop system. So if you have already dropped courses at other colleges you can't drop anymore.

Did you get certified at your schools gym? If so, I was considering that as well.

You suck at math and yet you are in cal 1 lol. :/ I haven't even taken it yet and I'm going to my junior year.

Isn't one semester of Calculus required for medical schools?

Not for every single one, though there are schools that do. It's not required for my major (well technically it is if you don't take stats) and I don't need it for WVU. It's really not relevant to me because I don't plan on applying out of my BS/MD program anyway.

I m new to the forums and I m kind of confused by how you calculate credit hours and determine course load. Some of you guys take >6 classes per semester and thats only allowed at my school for engineers (different class set up). My school's maximum number of class that we can take is 5.5 which roughly equals 16.5 credit hours (unless I m calculating credit hours wrong). Can someone explain to me my confusion? Because I took 4.5 classes my junior year and did research and now i feel like I should have done more.

Like junior year spring I took

Orgo II
Orgo II LAb
Neurobiology
Marine Biology
Biostatistics
=4.5 credits
and did research and other ECs. (Do medical school expect you to take more?)

Not necessarily.

Ah! I wasn't aware of that. Thanks!

Comments? Does this look too light?

I'm planning on doing a lot more shadowing/volunteering this year so I don't want to bite off more than I can chew regarding classes. I'll also be doing research the whole year.
