That would be pretty much all 120 seats even before they start the waitlist. I guess a ton of people pay the deposit and end up not attending? But even then, if they take a ton of people off the waitlist that means around 80 more people are going to pay the deposit and not attend. Seems pretty high. Hopefully it is accurate though. A lot of the people accepted yesterday will have multiple acceptances and will probably put down multiple deposits before making a final decision. Nothing to do but wait for the next few months I guess.

It's open file, except for your metrics. They had access to my personal statement, activities, letters of rec, classes I took, etc. They just won't be able to see your grades and DAT scores. Dr. Jeffers wanted it such that your interviewers could not have any negative presumption about you on the basis of your academic performance. He wants your interviewers to conduct your interview with the assumption that you are academically competent. He and Dr. Chang are the only ones who have seen your grades and DAT scores.
 
The wait list at UDM is quite big, it looks like for you guys they shaved a few off right from the get, still, i believe as the cycle goes on, they will send another wave of rejections in the spring.
 
This is from the ADEA official guide from a couple years ago i believe. A good rough estimate

No. Interviewed: 228
Offers Made: 134

Total OOS Applicants: 914
No. Interviewed: 368
Offers Made: 159

Total International Applicants: 320

I saw that too. I don't know if the fb class of 2023 group is a helpful indicator but there were a lot of people already joined. Probably 3/4 amount of class size were joined on the facebook group 🙁
 
For the people writing letter of intent - would you call them after you send them? If so, what would you tell them on the phone?

But once they get acceptances off the wait list from other schools, or following any post December interviews, they might give up their seat at UDM.
 
I’ll be declining my seat as soon as I get the package and see if I got any scholarship. Good luck to everyone!
 
Paranoia question but since the acceptance is contingent and in the acceptance email it says to "maintain or improve your GPA", what would be the leniency allowed in that? Like if I drop by 0.01 is it the end of the world or they generally just want to see A's and B's and that's it? I'm pretty it's the latter but the paranoia is killing me with finals coming up.

I was wondering the same thing, im taking a very tough semester at the moment
 
For those of you who are definitely attending UDM, have you given any thought to housing? (Sorry for asking this here, I haven't been able to find any similar discussions and I'm curious to see what the options are).

UDM and every dental school has a ranked wait list but they will never reveal the ranking of applicants because it is constantly changing due to acceptances and declines (this is like a domino effect). From previous years each school knows almost exactly how many applicants will accept and how many will decline their offer of admission. Based on past history they calculate and make decisions on how many applicants to call with an additional offer. UDM and many other dental schools keep almost all applicants they interviewed on the wait list until January-February and then will send out declines to most of them in February and March keeping a very small wait list until school starts. (this is due to the deposit timelines)
By April applicants with offers must declare only one school and can't keep multiple offers so few more spots open up then.
Each dental school needs to fill each and every spot for their D1, everything is calculated based on availability of the equipment and not having a full class means a financial loss.
Overall, if you are still on the wait list, you can be offered acceptance until a few days before the school starts.

To my understanding they legally can't pull your acceptance for changes in gpa as long as you pass all of your classes, based on the acceptance letter I received. All you have to do is fulfill the requirements stated in the acceptance letter and they said "contingent upon successful completion of all courses". They said they expect you to maintain or improve your gpa but an expectation is not a legal condition 🙂

I'm not sure if I'll be attending udm yet but I did check out housing nearby. There's upscale apartments pretty close to the school but they'll run you over $1100 a month easily, if you don't mind living a bit further away like in Dearborn you can find decent places for half that much.
 
Im currently on the waitlist and have been thinking about sending a letter of intent, or another letter of recommendation. I know at my interview they said if you contacted the school about being on the waitlist that they would push you farther down it, does anyone know if sending supplemental material would help or hurt?

From what I’ve heard from UDM specifically, yes. They don’t like to be bothered, apparently 🙁

Future Dent Student: it never hurts sending a letter indicating your continued interest in their program. Actually it may help if you know what to put in the letter. Here, you are asking competing applicants what you should do to further yourself above them so sometimes you will not get an honest answer. UDM will never push your candidacy down because of the honest expression of you wanting to be a student at their school. Calling admissions does not help, they are just administrators and not decision makers, Dr. Jeffers and members of their admission committee are.

No, UDM's decision is final. A letter will not change a decision because there are so many applicants on the waitlist before rejected ones.
However, you should request an appointment with Dr. Jeffers to review your file and advise you what actions you should take for the next cycle.
He regularly meets with applicants to advise them what are best actions for the application to be successful. you will need to ask for his availability, and that might be later on in the spring but before the next cycle officially opens.

What happens if the wait list becomes down to 8-10 ppl before May?

Dr. Jeffers officially retires at the end of the month IIRC. I believe Dr. Chang is taking over as the admissions director.

Reading last year's thread, it seems that they had 300 or so on the wait list to begin with. I remembered hearing that everybody who interviewed would be wait listed if not accepted, but that seems to not be the case this cycle. Dr. Jeffers said that they usually end up taking most of their wait listed applicants off of the wait list each year. It is some combination of UDM extending an acceptance, or somebody asking to be removed from the wait list because they are going elsewhere.

Pretty sure that wont be the case this year unfortunately. Judging by the Facebook group, 100 people or so have already accepted their offers outta the 140 seats they're planning to fill (I guess they sold their school really well this year compared to previous year?)

I think some people join the FB group just because they got accepted, so that does not necessarily mean they intend to put down a deposit or attend. Dr. Jeffers said that historically, only 120 or so people end up paying the initial deposit. Then once the initial deposit at other schools is due and they get their head count sorted out, those schools start letting people off their wait list. Starting at that time, people who paid the UDM deposit but want to go elsewhere will begin giving up their seats. I heard the biggest movement happens usually as deposits become due. Then, as they call people on the wait list, some people will automatically decline on the spot if they know they are going elsewhere.

Yeah UDM has a lot of movement people just need to be patient. But If it makes the people on the waitlist feel any better I plan on pulling my acceptance if I get into my state school.

I believe it won't hurt but it won't necessarily change your spot on the waiting list either. This was mentioned during interview day.
 
Well I made a split second decision and turned down my other options to go for UDM and mailed in my deposit. I thought for sure I'd be declining, so funny how things work out... So hey guys welcome class of 2023

They mainly do not want the call asking "where am I ranked?". I think they would be receptive to updates (as long as you are not overwhelming them).
 
As an international student, I have few questions.
Will I have to pay off the cost by semester?
If I cannot complete my payment by due date, does UDM SOD help me to pay the school through payment plan?
Will I have to provide a written documentation that I have sufficient amount to pay off the school?
I would really appreciate if someone can help me.
It seems like the school is closed for holidays.

I believe that proving your ability to pay for all four years is a condition of receiving your F-1 visa.
