Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No confirmation email yet. I spoke with Mr. Issa on the phone and he said the school will be off for the next few days (I believe due to Jewish holidays). He emphasized not to make any travel/accommodation arrangements until we receive confirmation. The dates are assigned first-come, first-served by email. Looks like we're just going to have to wait until they respond before getting tickets and hotels

Thanks for the info! I hope they can send those confirmations ASAP and don't wait a week until every applicant responds.

Yea, when I saw the fee cost I was in complete disbelief. I'm so glad I qualified for the fee waiver.

Got a secondary.

Very interested in finding out if getting a secondary means ill get an interview. Guess ill bite the bullet and pay the $200

Does anyone know if there will be more interview invites coming up, or is it true that the next batch will be sent out in a month?

Hi everyone, I'm applying for the next cycle.
I was wondering if could tell me if my mcat score is competitive? I have a 28P (7PS, 11VR, 10BS). I'm worried that my PS score will bring my app down. Would you recommend I retake it or is my score still competitive. Also, I have a cGPA of 3.5 and a sGPA of 3.2.

From what I've heard, they look at the bs score the most, so you would prob be fine. Don't quote me on that though, I'm currently applying as we'll. good luck! 🙂

I'm hoping someone on this thread can help us out with this

If they strictly follow Jewish holidays, I'd just wait until October-10th.

Sukkot
No work permitted on October 1-2 & 6.
Work is permitted on October 3-5 with certain restrictions.
Sunset of September 30 through sunset of October 7

Hoshanah Rabbah
Work permitted with certain restrictions.
October 7

Shemini Atzeret
No work is permitted.
Sunset of October 7 through nightfall of October 8

Simchat Torah
No work is permitted.
Nightfall of October 8 through nightfall of October 9

I couldn't find touro ny calendar but the touro ca is closed until October 9th for the holidays so I'm guessing to the same for NY. Guess the waiting will have to continue for a little longer..

Has anyone gotten an interview confirmation after emailing Mr. Issa Sow yet? Or do you guys know when we can anticipate getting that? I want to make travel arrangements before prices go up!

Nope. I sent him an email with my preferred interview date about 10 minutes after I got my invite (10/27). Didn't hear from him Friday on the 28th. Hoping he gets back to us by Monday so I can book my flight. I'm hoping to get the 22nd so I can hit up LECOM-Bradenton (10/24) and Nova (10/25) interviews all in one week. Flying out of Cali to the East coast is pretty expensive and I'd save more money that way.

I doubt that (as well as the high MCAT preference). I have a 31 MCAT (12 on the BS) and I got the confirmation letter on 9/5 (I mailed everything out the day I received it & I am IS, so mail travels faster). I still haven't gotten an II yet. Also, I sent out my primary on 6/1. I think they're looking at and considering students as a whole.

Yea I mean, they want to discourage people that are OOS. They want to train people that actually want to be there and live around the school. $200 app fee will def do that. I would assume for a majority of pre-meds that is a substantial amount of $$.

is Touro a "Jewish college" or are there just a lot of Jewish holidays around now? I didn't see anything on the mission,... i know brooklyn is like, their headquarters.

"Touro College is a sponsored independent institution of higher and professional education, in New York City, New York, United States. Founded by Dr. Bernard Lander, the College was established primarily to enrich the Jewish heritage, and to serve the larger American community." (From Wikipedia)

Also, they've a branch in Israel. http://www.touroisrael.org/

So, does that mean their original mission has changed since then since they are now Harlem-focused?

Couldn't get your point, sorry.

That their mission has changed? It shifted from enriching Jewish communities (I guess throughout NY) to serving Harlem-specific communities as per the secondary essay?

TouroCOM-NY is a smal branch within big mama Touro College. They have different missions.

The Touro College website states their mission as "Revised Fall 2009
Touro College is an independent institution of higher education under Jewish auspices, established to perpetuate and enrich the Jewish heritage and to support Jewish continuity, as well as to serve the general community in keeping with the historic Jewish commitment to the transmission of knowledge, social justice, and compassionate concern for, and service to, society. As an integral component of this commitment, Touro fosters access for diverse elements of the urban community to educational and professional opportunities in a variety of fields.

The Jewish heritage embraces two fundamental components, the particular and the universal, as reflected in Hillel's dictum, transmitted in Ethics of the Fathers, "If we are not for ourselves, who will be? If we are concerned only with ourselves, what are we?" This seminal teaching shapes the core values of the college, which include a dynamic commitment to quality education regardless of socioeconomic status, the treatment of all students, faculty and staff with integrity and respect, the role of ethics in the professions, and the building of a responsive and responsible society through expanded academic opportunities. Touro is a learner-centered college where personal growth and intellectual inquiry are fostered and where men and women are prepared for productive lives of dignity, value and values.

Touro offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Jewish studies and liberal arts and sciences, serving the diverse components of the Jewish community. In consonance with the universal aspect of its mission, the college provides neighborhood-based programs for underserved members of the community, and offers professional and graduate programs in such areas as education, law, medicine, pharmacy, the allied health sciences, social work, and business, as well as mission-driven programs at campuses abroad."

While TouroCOM-NY is "Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to preparing students to become outstanding osteopathic physicians who uphold the values, philosophy and practice of Osteopathic Medicine. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine places special emphasis on teaching and learning in the areas of primary care, the holistic approach to the patient. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to identify and recruit students who have specific interest in practicing in underserved communities, such as Harlem. The College advances the Osteopathic profession and serves the students and society by providing a firm educational foundation, encouragement of research and scholarly activity, and participation in community service.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine functions as an integral part of the New York City/Harlem community, and work with the community, local schools, and other colleges and universities to promote the study of medicine, encourage continuing development, increase educational opportunities, and deliver Osteopathic medical services in a variety of community settings.

Students learn the latest strategies for the management and treatment of patients in a broad range of social and economic settings. In addition to focusing on primary care, the School emphasizes the promotion of wellness from prenatal through geriatric care."

They are all separate branches under the same organizations. So yes, the goal of Touro as a University does focus on the Jewish heritage, but each individual branch and satellite has their own mission and goals pertaining to their programs.

I can relate! I have other interviews lined up in October and would like to schedule them back to back for travel savings purposes too. It's almost 5:00 p.m. Harlem time, and Issa Sow still hasn't sent me a confirmation email. I'm tempted to purchase the tickets without the confirmation. If I can't get my interview date, then I'll have to cancel the original ticket and use those credits to purchase a new one (Southwest lets you do this without penalty).

Harlem time!

did anyone hear back from mr issa after making the appt request?

The school on holiday until October 10 so I'm not sure if the offices will be working until next week..

Thanks for clearing the holiday question. I guess we do have to wait until the 10th

Omg. Thats a freaking long holiday.

I could be wrong but that is what touro ca is and the calendar for touro ny for last year had a long break for the holiday too.. This wait is driving me crazy.. I'm still waiting for the interview!

Hopefully he is working tomorrow and going to send out confirmation emails. The airfare will increase A Lot if he is not sending out mails this week.....

this is extremely unprofessional. I understand and respect that it is a Jewish holiday, so taking the week off is fine. However, since most of us, including myself, responded to his email on Thursday of last week then he should have responded before he left for a frickin week. Every day I watch the ticket prices creep higher and higher, and the seats becoming less and less available. I can only interview on oct 15th so I need the confirmation asap.

I feel the pain too......i emailed him on Thursday afternoon too and haven't heard back since.....i am debating if I should just go ahead and book it..........try my luck

You should book via Southwest Airlines if you can, they have no change fee if you need to change your ticket. I already booked my return ticket with them so I can change it if needed. As for my outbound ticket, the cheapest for me is Delta, and they have a 24 hour cancellation policy. Yesterday I bought the ticket then cancelled it earlier today and re-bought the same ticket so if he responds tomorrow I will be okay. If not then I will have to cancel again! Let us cross our fingers and hope he will be back tomorrow!

Think for a minute about that your jewish doctor wouldn't respond to an emergent case of yours since it was a jewish holiday! 😱 (really, can this happen as well?)

I'm pretty sure hes going to be at the recruiting events in Long Island tomorrow (Hofstra). Thats what Gina Moses told me yesterday at the recruiting event at Stony Brook yesterday, at least.

Haha that is a scary thought! I am so annoyed right now, they at least should have planned better interview dates or sent interview requests earlier if they knew they were going to take a couple of days off this week.

same here,,, very annoyed...

so does this mean that their students are out as well? do they have to somehow make up for the classes they missed or do they end up having a longer academic year?

Screw it. Booking my ticket for my Oct. 22 interview via Southwest. Hopefully I'll get that date. If not, least Southwest will credit me the amount I paid if I need to change my flight.

I am annoyed and upset. They are not considerate at all, they should know the price jumps day by day, and they are not giving us enough time.....I just hope they are nicer to their students.

Everyone should just calm down! You entered this whole process of applying to schools expecting it to be $hitty. Nothing we can do about it.

Lets all march into various med school admissions office and demand better treatment

Ah conflict theory, if only we could actually gather enough people to instigate a genuine revolution. 'Cause man, this whole process is screaming for revolution.

Ah conflict theory, if only we could actually gather enough people to instigate a genuine revolution. 'Cause man, this whole process is screaming for revolution.

and, yeah, the schools' approach to this revolution is like "after careful consideration of our 10s of years of experience, we think that we need more humanities graduates who have more social sides than those science majors"... they'll blame the applicant pool.. always... unfortunately, until all admission power is gained by the government such that there'll be a centralized matriculation system including all medical schools in the country, with which everyone will hear the results at once, those schools (public/private) would suck our blood in every desirable way, and we've no alternative except for obeying to their games' rules... sorry.

anyway, waiting. 😎

I think this was asked earlier but no one replied...did you send the LORs to their office or do they use VirtualEvals? Thanks!

MsBerry, I'm trying to do what you are doing with delta for both outbound and inbound.
Do you know if you cancel it and immediately buy it again, you will get the same price?
