Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey, all. Little late to game. Did you get complete/file under review confirmations for Harlem? Only complete maybe 3 weeks here, so I don't know if I should start calling. Thanks.
I only got a complete saying my supp materials have been received and if my letters have been sent, then my file will be reviewed.
I was complete early november at Harlem, hope we hear back soon.

They said 3 weeks, so likely end of this week or sometime next week.

Hey guys I am a current 2nd year student at the NY campus, if you have any questions let me know.

I actually have a question for a friend applying, when did you guys receive your secondary app this year? Are they being selective with who they send it out to?

Has anyone from the 11/17 Harlem morning interview session not yet heard back?

I got my secondary maybe a month after submitting my primary in the summer. If i were to guess they are not a harsh on their secondary invites as they were in years past. I heard they used to only do interviews from Jan. on and now they have them starting in the begging of oct not sure how true tat is but if it is, thats more interview invites to go around. also they have the new campus so its an additional 135 seats they have to fill. so id assume they are sending more secondaries and interview invites than previous years.

they seem to send everything out in one big batch. if you look at previous posts people all get their acceptances and rejections on the same day it seems so dont stress too much yet. my acceptance took three weeks after my interview. and some people who interviewed that week heard back the same day I did. I think they meet once a month to decide on all interviewees from that month and send out their decisions all together at once.

Anyone get II to Harlem recently? Strong stats here. Desperate to hear. Complete late.

I was offered an Interview back in mid-November and requested different dates because i could not make what was available. I talked to the admissions office a few days ago and they said they will be sending out interview's and dates for spring interviews either today or or next week

I recently got accepted to Touro Middletown too so this is purely my opinions, but compared to more established schools, Touro Middletown may have two problems. The first is as you said, the rotation sites will primarily be the regional hospitals around the Middletown campus. On the interview day, my interviewers stated that they are in the process of setting up more rotation sites in the area, in addition to the Orange Regional Medical Centre. While I personally am okay with the rural/suburban locations of these hospitals, the quality of these rotations is uncertain. The second thing with Middletown is the faculty. Most of the faculty members are newly recruited, though it should be noted that some of them are experienced professors from other universities and the feedbacks from current students are also very positive. I personally also got a "minimalistic" feel from the facility at Middletown. Though by no means lacking, the entire building seems a bit "mechanistic" since everything is so new and much space remains unused. During the campus tour, I feel it's just white all over, from the ceilings to the floors to the walls. Could really use some interior designs to make the place more homely. But this is just a minor issue, as I endured worse (my undergrad's science building looks like dungeons.)

I should note that the tuition at Touro is one of the lower ones (at 45k per year) and the cost of living in Middletown is significantly less than in NYC, though there is pretty much nothing to do around the campus. I am still waiting for two other schools, and it will be a hard choice between the three.

Just responding to this to clear some things up. Harlem and Middletown enter into the same pool for rotation sites and their is no preference, it is simply a lottery. They added the rotation sites to the Hudson Valley because it is extremely underserved, but the sites were not added for the Middletown campus specifically, they were added for both of the NY campuses. As far as the professors go, the ones you will watch in the lectures have all been at Touro for years, and the a lot of the professors at the Middletown campus were brought up from the Harlem campus.

Wow they did not bring that up during interview day. Actually if I'm remembering correctly, they told us just the opposite that Harlem students will get first priority for the greater NYC rotation sites. That was one of the reason why I chose Harlem over Middletown. Oh well...

Hm They do share the same database though. Oh well, either way, they're just rotational sites and I'm sure you'll have a chance to schedule away sites in your 4th year for your electives and whatnot.

Does anyone know what happens after you submit the $2k acceptance deposit? I submitted mine a few weeks ago, but haven't heard anything back after that. I can't seem to find any additional info on the portal either. I was just curious if anyone received anything additional. Thanks!

You get a confirmation email. But since they share the same database as Harlem it takes a while to get back.

Do you guys think that because Middletown is brand new, there will be any roadblocks ahead? It seemed like the administration knew what they were doing, especially since it's a branch campus and everything follows Harlem standards. But in terms of rotations, etc. - will that be a setback later on? Looking at the rotation site map, all of Middletown's rotations are in rural areas away from the city in stark contrast to Harlem rotations, which are not only more plentiful but more diverse than Middletown ones. I'm trying to decide between Touro Middletown and Touro Nevada and I'm having a really tough time! Thoughts?
This is touros 5th med school. I don't think they would open if there were any roadblocks. Middletown is set up for success

Hey everyone,

Do you guys think I will be fine submitting the deposit the within the last 1-2 days of the deadline? My deadline was extended to the 22nd (just like many others because of the ID issue) but I there is a possibility I may hear back from another school on the 19th which I'm leaning towards over Touro. While I have no problem paying the $2000 to hold my Touro seat, I'm going to be kicking myself if I pay the deposit and hear back from the other school the next day.
I am also waiting on the decision of one school which supposedly will come out this week. Make sure you can login to the Touro online system and you have enough money in your credit card. Also, remember you need to print out the form the admissions email you and send to the school (which you can do it earlier). As long as you can pay online on the 19th, I don't think it would be a problem. I personally will wait till Wednesday to pay my deposit.

Hey!
If it makes you feel better, I got accepted with a 24. My first mcat I got a 27 and then the second round, it dropped to a 24. However, I think my extracurricular activities and research experience really helped me out. So I think you have nothing to worry about. Just give it your all and be honest on your essay! If you have any questions, please just ask =)

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! That is awesome to hear! 🙂

This email is sent after you finish the online application system, which is separate from the secondary essay. You should also receive a separate email with the secondary application which you will send directly to the admissions email. After that, the admissions will send you a complete email (assuming you've sent all your LORs and secondary essay). And after this complete email, an interview invite may be sent. My timeline was as followed: AACOMAS primary released on Oct 16th --> Supplementary received and sent Oct 23rd (include the online application + the secondary essay) --> Complete email on Nov 10th --> Interview invite on Nov 11th --> Interview on Nov 24th --> Accepted on Dec 4th.

Guys, when was the last ii received? Feels like it was weeks ago! Anyone receive one since Thanksgiving?

Just wondering. Does anyone know what the average MCAT and GPA is for Middletown?

Dear Touro elves:

All I want for Christmas is an ii.

Thanks!

Any pattern on when they come out?

id assume at this point the admissions office is wrapping up for the holidays and will send the next bacth of interview invites after the new year.

Was also wondering if a current student could post up a file or something of the curriculum/classes through the semesters? Would really appreciate it.

Does Harlem's curriculum mean more work than if I was to attend another school? So at Harlem you listen to lecture/attend lab, attend the problem-based sessions, and study on your own. At another school, wouldn't I just be listening to lecture and studying on my own?

I would think ultimately the amount of time spent studying is dependent on how much time you are willing to spend. Compared to a didactic, lecture-based learning where you would preview/prepare for the lecture by studying textbooks, etc., you have the options of watching the lecture video online in the flipped curriculum and attend the lectures with any questions. How that might enhance learning I'm not 100% sure but would most likely depend on your personal preference.

Has anyone signed the acceptance form via acrobat or some kind of pdf editor? I figured it would be easier than printing, checking off 2 boxes, and scanning it. I know it says to scan and email or mail but I don't see how they will know if I just check off the boxes with a document editor.

Also, did you guys just copy and paste the acceptance form into a word document or did you include the entire email with it? I'm surprised they didn't attach the form as a separate document.

I signed everything using a PDF editor. And for the form from the email, I printed the page as a PDF and annotated as necessary using the editor.

At Touro, can you watch the lectures online or are you saying that's what other schools allow you to do?
Edit: From what I've read, I think Touro only offers case-based learning, so I guess you were talking about other schools?

Does anyone have an idea how full Touro's Middletown and Harlem campuses' classes are?

I just received an invitation to interview at Middletown. In my secondary, I rated Harlem as my top choice. My spouse works in the city, and as I would not want to commute on weekdays, it would be really hard to rent a second place, not to mention being separated from my family. Does this mean I automatically disqualify for Harlem?

The first year is not traditional style lecture... Where did you get that from?

I thought the two campuses have separate admissions committees? Acceptance into one campus is not acceptance in the other.

I would suggest calling the admissions and see if you can change the campus you are interviewing for.

Its different admission committees for each school. I interviewed at Harlem and they told us that if we wanted Middleton, we would need to interview again at their campus.

I requested Middletown only and when I was trying to find a good interview date they offered to interview me at Harlem. So in conclusion, not exactly sure how they do this.

Hmm, thats weird. I had put both campuses with a preference for Harlem so I was really glad I got the interview there. But when talking to the admissions director, she said that you get an acceptance only at the campus that you interview, and if you want to be considered at the other campus, you have to let them know and they will schedule an interview at that location. This process is quite confusing haha

Does Harlem have a white coat ceremony, and when is it usually?

Harlem does have a white coat ceremony but it's after finals of the second year. So for the c/o 2019 it would be May 2017. I found that out through the TouroCOM academic calendar..http://tourocom.touro.edu/academics/academic-calendar/

Although thru some light fb stalking I found a lot of first years with their coats already so I'm confused. @DrEnderW , can you straighten this out?

You're right, the white coat ceremony is at the end of 2nd year to celebrate the transition into the clinical years. That's when the school gives you the official white coat.

However, during the first couple weeks of the year, the family medicine student group will sell really nice quality coats with the Touro logo on it for a very fair price. That way, you'll have them before OSCEs starts and for any shadowing or whatever you want to do.

Congrats to all the accepted students!

Hey y'all,

Question for all the accepted students. What kind of confirmation did you guys get after you submitted the acceptance form and deposit? Did you get a confirmation email about the deposit only or one for the deposit and another for the acceptance form?
