um, i'm still waitlisted.... i have not been accepted to TOUROCOM. I was accepted to NSUCOM (declined) and NYCOM (accepted, will matriculate).

I doubt people on the wait list will hear anything until the interview cycle is over.

I don't know that there's anybody on this board who has received and completed a secondary but hasn't gotten an interview within a few weeks of completion. If you haven't, speak up. But that's evidence enough for me that secondary completion = interview.

That'd be me....Which, now that I think of it...little strange.

Yeah. I'll be callin' them tomorrow

oooooh I misunderstood. Ugh. This sucks. I'm lucky to have an acceptance at WVSOM, but I'd like to be closer to home (CT), and I love NYC!

Accepted ya'll!!!! For those on the WL - stay strong - I might decline my acceptance - keep the faith!

Hello Everyone,

I am brand new to this site. I interviewed at Touro on the 18th of December and just received my acceptance in the mail. I am extremely excited, considering this is my first acceptance, but I have two reservations about the interview.

1. During my interview, they asked what area of medicine I envisioned myself in. I told them pediatric oncology. They said that if I was dead set on that profession, I might want to consider MD because Touro and other DO schools pride themselves upon primary care physicians. This left me discouraged because all the research I have done on MD vs. DO led me to believe they are equal. I really wanted to hear from my interviewers that this education is so great, it will prepare me for any field I choose. 🙁

2. They said to tack on an extra $30,000 a year ontop of the tuition for living in NYC! AHHH!

Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me?

Thank you!

Bug
I have similar reservations about the school. I am leaning toward a surgical specialty of some kind. Other DO schools such as DMU or PCOM do not press the primary care envelope nearly as much and turn out impressive match lists year after year. I have been accepted at TOUROCOM as well. I will see how the rest of the application season plays out. That said, I think if you work your tail off at any of these schools, there is really nothing stopping you from matching into any specialty. You just have to do really well in your classes and rock the COMLEX and USMLE.

aww,

Thank you very much for the reply. It is great to know that there are other DO candidates out there aiming at specializing. I totally agree with your thoughts that you determine your own fate. Working hard for top grades and high scores on the COMLEX and USMLE can only help your chances when it comes to residency and beyond.

Another question! I thought it was standard to pay money to hold your spot after acceptance, but $2000?!! I guess I was under the impression it was more like $200 maybe a month until May when the large deposit is required. Is this standard practice?

Thanks for your help!

2000 is standard for all the Touro's. Which is probably why I won't reserve a spot. I was accepted at Touro MI, and already laid down a hefty deposit there, which already has steady rotations, programs, etc, which is what is my only concern with Touro Harlem. I heard LECOM is like $1500.

neone know if its pass fail 1st 2 years.. and more detail about rotations for 3/4th year even tho they haven't had student go thru that yet?

anyone know about the sports bra/shorts requirement in OMM? is this only in Touro-CA?

Once you get in, Obed sends out a couple of docs. One of them does cover this:

OMM/OPP Laboratory Dress Code

The dress requirement in the clinical skills training sessions is designed to promote learning by providing optimal access to diagnostic observation and palpatory experience. Wearing inappropriate clothing interferes with a partner’s experience of diagnosis and treatment.
Appropriate attire must be clean and includes:
·Shorts which are several inches above the knee
o(no jean shorts, cut-offs, thick-seamed shorts, spandex, short shorts or knee length shorts)
·T-shirts
oBoth sexes will be asked to remove t-shirts while acting as patients.
·Sports bras or bathing suit tops for women
oThese should expose the spine and ribs (not wide t-back styles).
·Student Doctors may wear scrubs (or other apparel approved by the Course Director) over the laboratory attire when not in the role of the patient.
·Remove shoes when you are the patient (no shoes are permitted on the tables).
·Hats or head coverings (other than for religious purposes) are not permitted in lab.
·Religious head coverings are to be removed when they would obscure the immediate area to be examined or treated (e.g., head, neck, upper back). They may be immediately replaced after this portion of clinical skills training.
·Be sure that you are appropriately attired before class begins. Student Doctors who do not wear the required clothing will be asked to leave and return when they are appropriately clothed. The time out to change into appropriate lab clothing will be counted as absence from class.

Nothing surprising

Here's the actual dress code:

Wear appropriate clothing for that day's lab (which we obviously know ahead of time from blackboard). If its focused on lower extremeties, a sports bras isn't required. If its focused on the spine, expect to take your shirt off. It all depends.

My thoughts:
If you are a guy and you don't want to take your shirt off in a lab, apply somewhere else. If you're a girl, and you think that its sexist to have to wear a sports bra, apply somewhere else. If you believe you are fat (regardless of the norm), and you won't let someone practice on you, apply somewhere else!

I have had partners who believed themselves to be too big, and would not let me or others practice OMM on them, when its required. No one looks down on them for being bigger, if they are or arent. People look down on them for being bad partners. If this is you, don't apply, to Touro, or other DO schools.

As for pass/fail, its not, its letter grades.

Rotations are totally open, and thats a good thing. I'm setting up a core rotation, probably, in Texas, and we are allowed because its completely student directed. (As long as its going to further our education)

did anyone accepted for next year get this document?? Cuz I haven't received yet, and i was wondering if there is a phone call needed to be made...thanks!

I think i'm going to withdraw. I already have an acceptance to Touro MI and already placed the hefty $2000 deposit. So all the waitlist guys/gals, I WANT YOU TO HAVE MY SEAT! Good luck to everyone!

superfan, have I ever declared my undying love to you??? 😍

seriously though, good luck with everything 🙂

Hi guys. Just want to know if anyone knows if this building is, in fact, the building within which Martin Luther King was shot?
Just wondering. That's kinda creepy if its true. 😱
Someone please call :bullcrap:on me if this isn't true.
I sorta hope I'm wrong!

now only if there was a way to transfer my acceptance to you meggie! I hope this works out for you, is TOURO Harlem your first choice?

oh, that would be nice, huh? 🙂 And yeah, it's my first choice. It's actually the only school I applied to this cycle because I have an acceptance for next year, I was just hoping to be in the city/closer to home.

i mean stabbed, not shot

Indeed it is. Harlem was the at the heart of the civil rights movement for the region and to be honest it is tough to find any place here that was not tumultuous and eventful during that time. I don't see it as creepy at all. In fact, I find it to be an incredible statement that a building that once was the picture of hate/segregation in Harlem is now training physicians to serve the people therein.

are men allowed to were underwhere

I am not sure what your question is, care to clarify? As far as I know, yes we are allowed to wear underwear. 🙂

Ok, so I'm not one who likes to spread rumors, but I just want to make sure these things aren't true.

I recently interviewed at this school, and fell in love with it. Obed and others are very nice.

I asked around the medical community, some friends from Mt. Sinai, present students, and a harlem PCP that I volunteered for.

This is what I was told.

1) Touro has currently has no heat. 2) There is no online or streaming lectures. 3) Mt. Sinai is about to buy North General Hospital.

During my interview, I was told that the building is brand new and fully operational, and that they are even expanding! I was also told that they currently have streaming lectures! From the list of Rotations, North General is the only Hospital in harlem, is that rotation secured?!?!

Was I lied to, or is someone chirping in my ear?

The streaming lectures are now up and running. Indeed, we did not have the tech set up when we started. This has been rectified.

We do indeed have heating issues but building issues were expected. Although it does occassionaly get chilly in the building this isn't nearly as bad as it sounds. Also, this will not be an issue for the next class.

I haven't heard about Mt. Sinai buying North General and even if they do, so what? We have rotations secured there, I doubt they would not want us there. And yes, they are secured, hence why they tour the interviewees there.

For those who aren't aware, our Dean, Dr. Diamond was in charge for alot of the development of NYCOM's clinical rotations and we have an awesome clinical team. I have no doubt our rotations will be spectacular.

And yes we are expanding. Good luck with your decision!

Honestly, the best part about touro is the location, they know that, you know that, EVERYONE knows that. Harlem is a great area, pretty diverse, and most def underserved.

Thanks so much for the information. I'd love to go here, and you're right, the history is very interesting and pertinent. Guess my kneejerk was just that, brain out of the loop!!

Thanks!!

I have some moments when I feel very excited about the idea of going to Touro-NY, but some moments when I feel a bit scared about the newness of the school (lack of statistics for boards, matching etc)..

Anyone else feel this way? How are you reconciling that?

in all honesty, that's why i chose to put down the Touro MI deposit insted of the Harlem one. I'd kill for a chance to productively live in NYC, but can't gamble on something like this anymore. Not to say Touro-Harlem won't have great rotations, matches, etc, they probably will, but I just can't base my medical school/future on hypotheticals.

which is why you're calling Obed and having him transfer your acceptance to me, right superfan? 🙂 if only...

Do you know about how the students feel at Touro-CA (happyness wise)? Also, anyone know if you can transfer your deposit from one Touro to another?

honestly, i haven't been to a school where people aren't happy. It's a bit deceiving actually...kids at touro MI were happy, kids at every touro are happy, and i interviewed and got accepted to all three..

and got accepted to all three..

Not really relevant.

(Think I might be jealous?)

👍 New TouroCom NY Website http://www.touro.edu/med/ - check it out. Obed said they are still making improvements but it looks great and provides a lot of info. Also, someone mentioned before a workout room being built on the top floor. Obed said it's in progress and will be 2,000 square feet with cardio equipment and weights ;o) AWESOME!!!
:banana::biglove::clap:

wooo hooo finally!!! and its got real pictures!! YAYYYY 🙂 😍

ok so I'm finally writing my letter of intent after being waitlisted at TouroCOM. My question is, should I address it to Obed or just say, "To Whom it May Concern," or something else entirely? Any ideas?

I would assume addressing it to Obed is the thing to do...chances are he will be the first to look at it. Also, he is really nice..so I don't see why not 🙂

Yeah, this website is much better than the old one. It still needs to include more information though, preferably something about the course schedule. But, very nice overall...and cool pics 🙂

Obed isn't the deciding factor - I would address it to:

"To the Members of the Admissions Committee"

Thanks Happygirl 🙂

Yeah, Keys may be right...I was just making an assumption so don't listen to me without asking many other people first, I don't want to misguide you! 🙂

Haha, ok, that might be a better way to go. Thank you for the advice everyone 🙂

Anybody interview w/ me on Jan 8? Have you heard anything yet?

Does anybody know when classes begin this fall (or rather summer) ?
