Soooo excited for you JustCats! I knew you'd get in!!! :soexcited:

CONGRATS JUSTCATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And, GeeQued, I'd be more than happy to play with your mini mare! I have been entertaining the idea of getting something off the track as a project but I'm hoping someone will talk me out of that, and a nice broke little hunter horse sounds like a fun alternative haha. Stay in touch!

*cough* with that said, if there's anyone who's dying for an OTTB, pm me and we can discuss that crazy idea , I do have another friend in Davis who is a superstar hunter rider who might be willing to get in on a project like that.

Rather than making me wait until tomorrow, Yasmin just called me to tell me #3 declined. I'm in!!! I can not believe it! I am so excited!!!
:biglove::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Yay JustCats, thats great news! CONGRATULATIONS!!! :soexcited:

Congratulations JustCats! I know the wait was pretty nerve-wracking.

Oh wow, Justcats, I just saw. Congrats, I'm so glad you'll be able to join us!

Congratulations, JustCats!!!!!!!!!!!! :highfive:

This looks like a nice place to live. Does anyone familiar with Davis know anything good or bad about the complex/landlords?

No, but you'll be in downtown, which could get kinda noisy. Also, it's pretty pricey. But maybe that comes with the territory of being in downtown. (For comparison, I'm in a 2bd/2ba in the upper west corner of Davis (3.5 mi to the vet med campus) and paying ~$1250/mo. I know someone else who lives around J street and E. 8th St. and pays in the neighborhood of $1,000 for a 2bd/2ba.

I would say DON'T live at Greystone...they are only after your money (and security deposit...the person that inspected our apt when we moved out said we had the cleanest apt she had ever seen during inspection-it was so clean that they wanted to charge us $400 to clean it afterwards!).

I like Portage Bay, it's more families and professional students (quiet). They allow cats, but I don't think they allow dogs. It is ~3 miles from campus and just across the street from a great bike path that will take you straight there.

Portage Bay is nice, but when my roomate and I checked in on their 2-room units 2 weeks ago, we were 28th on the waitlist for the 1x units they have available. You may wanna called them and ask about how the waitlist is moving along now although I won't hold my hopes up high.

Anyone else ready for it to be September already?

I'm ready for it to be August. That way I still have vacation time and time to move up to Davis, but not start classes quite yet. I'm not even done with school yet for this academic year, so I'm ready for a little break first.

Don't you upcoming first years dare wish to take away my summer! 😡

I need that!

I'm not sure why people are so antsy for fall...I mean, sure, I'm extremely excited but --- seriously guys, do you know how much work we're going to be doing? ENJOY what may be your last break!

I agree...I'm actually sad it's going to be May already! I have so much more work to get done before I head up to Davis, so I am happy to have the remaining months to finish things up, and maybe get some time to relax before the craziness begins!

Yep. I need every available minute between now and then since I will inevitably procrastinate a few of them away.

I still have alot to do so don't get me wrong im enjoying my break but since I dont have any classes on campus this quarter Im pretty much bored out of my mind. Aside from running, riding, and impulsively checking my facebook theres not much for me to do except if I'm at work.

In 2 weeks I will be moving home for the summer after 4 years of being cross-country from my parents. I want summer, but I was supposed to travel and have to be home for reasons out of my control, so it's not that I want school to start I just don't want to think about being the "only kid" in the house again for 4 months straight...which is why I think July/August will be nice

Just wondering if anyone has heard any updates about estimated tuition for the 2009-2010 academic year (or info about scholarships/grants or other info in general from the financial aid office)?

Anyone else bouncing back and forth between being calm and accepting of the massive debt we are about to take-on to being totally and utterly freaked out ? 😱 :scared:

In case anyone is interested, I called the admission's office to see the status of the alternate list. They have currently gone through 6...

Wow! That means two people have revoked their intent to enroll in the past week and a half.

What number are you jglovicz?

In case anyone is interested, I called the admission's office to see the status of the alternate list. They have currently gone through 6...

I started out as #11, so I need another 4 people to give up their spots...I don't think it's going to happen, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I loved Iowa, and that is where I'm planning to go, but I really want to stay here in Davis with my boyfriend 🙂.

Well your always gonna have the people who dont pass a pre req class, or got accepted off a waitlist of a school higher up on their list. Or ones that, with this economy, cant afford it once tuition comes out.

Hey everybody,

I saw this video http://www.screencast.com/t/62IDatDheS and it seemed like a really cool way to organize notes, especially pdfs. I started putting all my pdf files I've accumulated and its great at searching and finding articles. The cool thing is its free and it works with pc and mac.

Also, I did find a way to annotate pdf files with a graphics tablet for those of us who have a mac, but its a java based program (jarnal) and I'm still trying to figure out how to get it to launch automatically without using terminal*. If anybody knows a thing or two about java or how this program works let me know! *figured this out

FYI - I got an email back from Jay Conner. He doesn't anticipate our financial aid packages will come out until mid-late June :d. He also said that the UC Regents are meeting next week to determine the amount of our tuition. :xf:

Hi, I was looking into buying a bamboo fun as an attachment for the mac... does anyone have recommendations on which size to get? Do you think the smalls big enough or should I get the medium? Will the medium take up too much room in class? Thanks!!

So does that mean that the powerpoint slides can be drawn on? or just PDFs?
Thanks in advance!

I was also really torn on which size to buy and I decided to go with the smaller one because of the huge difference in price. I can tell you that I don't feel bothered or restricted by the small size. Have you looked at any of the youtube videos? They were very helpful to me. For double the price, the medium didn't seem worth it.

Also, scratch using Jarnal to annotate pdfs--its full of bugs. I've tried almost all the pdf annotating programs for mac and they all suck. I was ready to purchase parallels/vista AND pdf annotator when I came across "Curio". It works great. I drag/drop a pdf file in the workspace and I can draw, highlight and scribble all over the pdf AND I can also add text boxes and doodles off the page as well. I downloaded the free trial but I am definitely RELIEVED at the small cost of 70 bucks to keep the program (otherwise having to buy parallels/vista/pdf annotator=FML)

StayingHopeful, I think if you imported the images from powerpoint you could draw all over them but its probably easier to just save the powerpoint file as a pdf and then drop the file in the annotating program. From my experience, the powerpoint files are usually huge (full of rich graphics/histology slides) and its easier to just convert it to a pdf.

if it weren't for the price would u get the medium?

Now that I think about it, nah I wouldn't get the medium. The small is bigger than it looks in the pictures. I've been using it for awhile and I think if the drawing area were any bigger I would just have to move my hand around more. The drawing space is mapped out to match your computer screen so having an extra 2 inches means you have to move your hand further.

If I could do things over again, I would have bought the regular bamboo instead of the bamboo fun. The only difference between the two is the bamboo fun comes with software and a mouse that only works on the drawing surface. I found the adobe software to be very slow and its too complicated for me to use (I dont have time to learn it) and the pen itself works great as a mouse.

Hope this helps.

When is the deadline to switch which kind of computer? I think it was in late May, but I just want to be sure I don't miss it.

I wasn't able to find the date for computer changes...
Another question, has anybody heard anything about the bigwigs meeting to decide tuition?

Ooh, thanks for posting that Kitty Rex! I love seeing the statistics...

I think it's really interesting to work out the percentages for each UC. For example 7 people from UC Berkley got in from a pool of 25, that's a 28% acceptance rate, which is higher than any other school. It gives me hope!

I wish they'd give more on ethnicity, I know it's terrible to say, but I am Hispanic and am not sure yet if I will decline to tell or put it down or what...I don't want to hurt myself just because of my race. I'd like to know how many people applied under each race so you could calculate again. Ah well, some things you have to figure out on your own!

I'd be a bit careful in attaching too much significance to the numbers from any one year...more likely to reflect the qualifications of those specific applicants than any particular trend. Though you should be able to access those same data points for previous years, so maybe could see a trend that way.

Then again, the only thing at risk is probably your hopes or tattered nerves. Just don't drive yourself crazy looking for patterns in small amounts of data. 😉

Yeah, I agree with this one. Those numbers aren't gonna be big enough to have any real significance, and because of the applicant pool variation it's not really prudent to extrapolate too much from them.

From the Accept/Decline page:

"If you change your mind about the computer choice, please contact Chris Brandt by email ([email protected]) before May 25th."

Hope that helps you guys - you shill have some time to decide.

I realize that, I'm the type who fusses and always tries to see some sort of pattern/trend no matter what. As pathetic as it is I have been able to get my hands on the stats for a few years back (maybe to 2005?) and have been doing the same worrying. Usually there's no sort of trend, things hold out pretty constant except GPA has been going up. I would guess though that's just a coincidence, based on each year's applicant pool.

It does play more on my nerves than anything, but the statistics aren't completely useless and I feel like you can glean a some info from playing with them.

Are there any current (class of 2012 or earlier) UC Davis students on here that can say:

what you got (Mac or PC tablet) and
either why you like/dislike it or
if you had to make the same decision again, if you would pick the same computer?

Thanks!!

I can tell you that I had a Mac (which I loved, but, was annoyed by the fact that all programs, add-ons, extras have to be specific to Mac which amounts to paying a lot more for the same products.) I know have a tablet PC. It's actually the version right before the version they are offering for this year, but, I still have to get a new computer-kind of silly, but, whatever. Anyway. I've love this tablet. You can get a hard-case to protect it for an extra $90 (definitely worth it in vet med) and it's very user friendly. I have issues with organization (like I'm not good with it) and being able to take all my notes on my computer and keep them organized in computer files has been a life-saver in grad school. Hope that helps a little. I real.ly think it is just personal preference (and cost difference) and whether the tablet feature is important to you

Any updates on the wait list? I've still got my fingers crossed for you. :xf:

I posted this on our FB group as well:

I have a question about financial aid. My FAFSA is submitted. Is there anything else I should already have done to throw my hat into the ring for financial aid? I checked out the grad/prof school financial aid website and there are some pdfs one can fill out for certain types of aid, but they all require a student ID which I don't yet have.

So I think I'm just waiting. If there's something else I should be doing, please let me know.

NEVER MIND. Just found the info under "new student checklist:
Financial Aid: Read "Financing Your Veterinary Medical Education" and review your financial options. If you wish to be considered for financial aid, apply at www.fafsa.org immediately if you have not already done so. Once you have your student ID number (will be emailed to you in late May) and have activated your student account, you will be able to view your Financial Aid Notice online at http://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/MyAwards/index.html. Questions regarding your financial aid should be directed to Jay Conner, financial aid analyst for veterinary students. He can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at (530)752-9602.

Our financial aid packages for next year aren't available yet either.

Thanks for asking! I am #5 (as of last week)...the person I spoke with on the phone was very kind and she tip-toed around the "Just so you know, everyone has accepted their spots, so in order for the list to move more, people have to give up spots they have already reserved"...she didn't sound too hopeful. It doesn't look too good, however, I still plan on calling them the day before I start driving to IA with my ponies in the back🙂 (JUST to be sure that I don't get to Nebraska then turn around---although I would do it in a hearbeat:laugh:).

So for those that have already gotten their ID numbers and logged on do any of you have anything under your financial aid stuff. Mine shows that they haven't received anything on it yet, which I got my SAR in February and I know Illinois sent me something on my report so I know it got out. Im hoping its just not uploaded yet before I panic. 🙁

Mine said the same thing. I contacted the financial aid office and it seems they haven't gotten everything sorted out yet (like they said mine was in "duplicate status" or something of the sort).

You might want to contact them to see what's up.
