I have been told UCLA med students are the most happy group in Calif. Is this true ?

im sure most of the kids that attend the UCs are really happy since the fact that they even got into one is awesome.

UCSF - prolly happy cause they get to be in SF and its one of the top schools in the nation.

UCD - the students are hella happy there. chill and laid back style for an up and coming school. Can't find a single negative other than too many Kings fans 😛

UCLA - its in LA (Westwood) next to beautiful places like Santa Monica...I'd be happy there 😀. Also a top school combined with ideal weather.

UCI - I don't know anyone at this med school surprisingly.

UCSD - Sunny San Diego thats becoming more "outgoing" every year. A top school as well. The friends I know that attend SD deal with the trad lectures but for the most part love it where they are at.

Well Said. Now who is the No. 1 Party Animal?

jlee9531 said:
LA of course 😉

I will be there..... hehe

I understand that they have their monthly trip down to Mexico....

awesome...and i was about to say...you cant party all day now... gotta do some good 😉

hey do you know if ucla has any student-run clinics?
if so how many and how student run are they?

Legend123 said:
Yes. I know they have the one at Salvation Army. Check out their med site at httP://www.medstudent.ucla.edu/ Very cool

thanks a lot....
there are a lot of clinics...
too bad none of them are virtually completely student run....that would be kinda cool.

Actually the Salvation Army clinics are virtually student-run. We have 3 (potentially 4) different clinics:

Westwood Clinic: located in transitional housing, mostly families with small children
Samoshel Clinic: at a homeless shelter in Santa Monica
Mobile Clinic: out of a van parked in Hollywood every Wednesday night, working with homeless adults

All 3 clinics have a group of student chiefs (usually 4th year students) who coordinate supplies, scheduling, etc. First and second-year students pair up with third and fourth year students to interview patients and conduct physical exams. We then present the case to the attending, confirm the diagnosis, treat the patient or make a referral to a more comprehensive clinic if needed. I heard something at the beginning of the year about a 4th clinic for homeless teenagers, but you have to have a certain amount of experience with the Mobile Clinic first.

I just got back from the second look day, and I do think they treat you much better than interview day. THere were way too many lecture-type of presentation, but overall it makes you feel that they're actually finally "selling" the school to you.

We had Chinese catered food, but I didn't think it was very great...however, that's a change from the usual UCLA catering--Salad and Sandwich.

Oh and Dean Parker mentioned that Med Students will be guaranteed housing at the New Graduate Student Housing complexes (Still under construction as of now). It's located within walking distance to campus, and a bit isolated from the Undergrad apt area (i.e. quieter). The cost is cheap for Westwood ($700-$800 per person), but if you want cheaper places, you have to live further and drive to school. Apparently parking passes are easier to get if you're a med student, so that may not be a problem.

I don't know if I met any SDN-ers, but I do think I met one, though I'm not sure if she's the SDN-er I'm thinking...anyways...that's it for now 😀

hahah, yeah it was pretty good. the food was okay. but they talked to us way too much, i almost fell asleep. one guy actually fell asleep several times. sounded like there were lots of opportunities and student life was great. also seemed like the faculty took great care of the students.

parking is guaranteed as well. im 100% for sure going to ucla. yay.

cal, were you wearing (dark) blue by any chance? and is your real name very similar to your sdn name?

oh and just as a i thought, they made no distinction between ucla and drew/ucla. it wasnt even an issue.

calbe, did you feel the same way bout that?

I was wearing grey shirt with blue jeans, ...I don't remember meeting anyone from USC though...where were you sitting during the luncheon and during the Doctoring part? I was sitting at the very back from entrance during luncheon, and I was on the second row during doctoring.

It seems like if you don't wanna mention that you're part of Drew, you don't have to and no one will know. The choice to goto Drew, however, will depend on whether you're confident about Martin Luther King hospital...

even though like i justed pmed you, now maybe i think its you. i was in the 2nd row in doctoring and i was sitting in the 2nd level first table on left for lunch. ??

I believe I was sitting at the table right behind you during luncheon (Relative to where Dean Levy was standing/speaking).

Some people think I look Korean/Vietnamese, maybe b/c my eyes are small...

can't believe they haven't reached a decision on my file yet... furthermore, i can't believe they had the 2nd look weekend without having reviewed all the applicants... 😡

You're not the only one. A friend was accepted to UCSD very early, and now on UCSF high priority waitlist, but still no post-interview decision from UCLA yet.

hm i wonder if i saw you guys...i was there, but very very tired...

I'm short (5'4"), no glasses, short black hair. Some people think I look Korean/Vietnamese, maybe b/c my eyes are small...
HEY! Not all Koreans have small eyes!! Mine are of good size. They are not quarter slots like some I know. 😀

yeah it sucks...a lot of schools however have 2nd look without being done with their interviews etc...and i dont think ucla has another 2nd look weekend for later acceptancees like some other schools have.

but hey its all a part of the process...be positive and good things might happen!

Not quarter slots...but "dime slots" I bet 😀
Well many Koreans do have small eyes though...😉

haha i was genetically blessed then 😉

but it is a reason why a good number of people in Korea, and in other asian countries as well get surgery done for the double eyelids...

so now that second look is done, do we need to do anything else?? (besides fin aid/tuition and housing. oh and i guess to let them know we are coming) do i just show up in august??

yay. im so excited now.

sounds like it was fun. how many people came? wish i could have came!

i have a few questions. how do we fill out/where do i find "Statement of Legal Residency" and "Intent to Register." i want to do that asap so that i can get a BOL email account. also, they gave us a login and password for secure ucla sites, but it doesnt work; does it work for any of you? sigh.

thanks.

I have no clue about those forms...

On another note, on second look day, an anatomist said that UCLA will still use dissection as a mode of learning, and the cadaver program remains "vibrant" b/c of the storage of cadavers from pre-scandal period.

for those of you who have already been accepted, did any of you have an average gpa (below 3.7), and what did you do to make up for it? high mcat, good extracurrics, good letters, and/or good interview? my gpa isn't high (3.6), but i would still like a shot at ucla.. so i dont know if they'll think negatively of it and not accept me based on some bad science grades :scared:

UCLA's average GPA has been hovering around 3.6-3.7. It doesn't mean half of the people get below 3.6, but a GPA around the average should be fine. Now the UC admissions are probably even more unpredictable than an average med school. Apply to lots of schools and don't just set your sight on one single school.

haha your gpa is strong enough to get consideration for an interview at ucla. if you are in state then all the more better. a strong mcat is nice and meaningful ECs are always helpful and good material to talk about during the interview. just have a strong overall application.

a 3.6 is not weak. its very strong. but once again...would you do anything differently if you had a 3.7 or 3.8? I dont think so. So just have a strong overall application because thats whats important.

I was hoping to see some of my fellow SDNers durning the 2nd look. It would have been nice to finally meet the great Calbee but I guess some of you guys are not as fortunate as I am-as the only black guy during the 2nd look I kind of stood out 🙂 .Men those presentations got a little bit redundant towards the end. Big up to the guy sleeping at the back. 👍

the great calbee just doesnt show his face to anyone...
he likes to go to places incognito...😉

Supereagles, I think I DID see you. You were sitting on the side (not at a table) during the luncheon right? I was sitting at the table right in front of you. I'm really no one special...short Asian guy, short hair but no glasses 😉

I was talking to my roommate about how few Blacks there were at second look. I think I only saw two--you and a girl in my sample PBL group. So you didn't goto Columbia's second look weekend?? It would have given you a reason to fly to NYC again!

Am I the only one who went on the "night out on the town?" In case you're interested it was ice skating and a bar...ten people went
Overall, I really got back my appreciation of UCLA...crap, I'm torn.

I don't know who you are but still i got much luv for you 🙂 Were you im my PBL group by any chance.

What a relieve that we have been guaranteed housing for the first two years in the new apartments. I was also surprised that they served dim sum for lunch. Did they say eat your breakfast before you come ? Thank God they had good stuffs for breakfast...... I was so tired and hungry when I got there in the morning. Overall I am impressed with the second look and the school....

no you werent in my pbl group.

btw, i called today. we will be getting those forms sometime in may. so thats when we can get our email addresses i guess. also, the login/password they gave us works, but just for things like housing...i thought we could go all around the website. sigh. i was excited that things would get moving, but i guess not until later on.

Not true. They don't give preference to Cali residents. 😉

Hey CaLBeE, were you right about UCLA having the best-looking students? Any hot girls? Hot AsIaN girls? What do you think about the overall appearance of the class? Average? Above average?

when most of the students at la are instate...id say by numbers alone...you have a better chance if you are instate.

LOL I was just kidding. Med Students at UCLA are probably about average, there are some that are above average though...not everyone from Southern Cali looks like celebrity 😀

Wow...but supereagles hasn't even talked to you yet...don't worry...I think everyone was a bit nervous meeting like 80+ strangers in a room...at least I was.

there were some pretty girls there. lots of asians; i guess that rumor is true

I'm an average looking guy, but I do have high standard I guess. But it's true that most if not all people are not ugly-looking. 😉

I'm suspicious when a state school says that...but then what do I know, I'm just a college student
