Hey UCLA folks,
what's up with the 2nd tier holding list? or holding pool? does this mean basically that i'm at the bottom of the waiting list? does geffen reject people outright post-interview, or is this holding pool the equivalent?
it's curious - they've seen my application before - i was accepted into the Drew/UCLA program, but Geffen seems to ge giving me the shaft.
can anyone make it clearer for me?
thanks,
lolli

yeah the hold list is their 2nd waitlist.
people dont get called up until july at the earliest.
no there are people that do get rejected post interview.
people have to wait till everyone on the high priority waitlist gets taken off before people on the hold list gets taken.

ucla and drew are 2 different medical schools and have separate admission committees. so that is why people who get accepted to ucla might not get into drew and visa versa.

i hope this helps.

thanks jlee for the clarification.
i'm still a little confused about the drew/geffen issue. i undestand someone not getting into drew but yes getting into geffen. but i thought that geffen has to ok all of the drew applicants after the drew committee accepts them - geffen has the final word. it's just a little curious. i'll be there anyway though!

It's a conflict of interest too...If Geffen knows that you're accepted by Drew, will it try to compete with Drew for the same applicants? No. Plus the voting adcom at Geffen will be different from Drew even though Geffen has to approve all Drew acceptees.

Wow lolli, you already received your final decision? When did they say they sent it?

By the CalBeE I like you quote.

Just checked my status page and seems like my letter was sent out yesterday. I was interviewed in the beginning of March, and this is roughly when they told me my letter would be sent. Does anyone know if the acceptance is a larger envelope, or is it just a normal sized one?

As I mentioned over and over and over again 😉...all decisions come in small envelopes...now since Second Look Weekend has passed, they may include more information for acceptees, but I wouldn't know.

like calbee said, its a conflict of interest. i highly highly doubt that someone will be accepted to ucla after getting into drew...if your in drew its cause they really want you, it would not really make sense for ucla to take you away from them. lolli, in your case im sure you received your acceptance to drew after your interviewed at ucla...RIGHT??...the reason i say this is cause im highly skeptical that they would have even interviewed you at ucla if they knew you were already in drew.

anyhow, yes there are separate committees. but once drew accepts you, dr aguilera takes your file to dr. parker and he has to get dr. parker to accept you. im pretty sure at that point the director, lilli fobert, or maybe even dr paker will draw your regular ucla application out of the pool.

thats my theory and im pretty sure the truth is pretty close to it. 🙂

not necessarily true, there are people who do get accepted to both Drew and UCLA-Geffen. My roommate a few years ago (now 1st year resident) had that happened to him.

Thanks for all of the replies, I guess it is still a little unclear what how independent the addmissions committees are.
Docmemi, I actually interviewed and was accepted at Drew before I was even invited for an interview at Geffen. Isn't that strange? At the time I thought that Geffen might have invited me for an interview *because* Drew wanted me. But now I think that the decisions are made much more separately than that.
Oh, the elusive, foggy world of med school admissions. we will never know whar *really* goes on behind the scenes. Don't you kind of just want to be a fly on the wall to hear what kinds of discussions, little spats and conflicts they have in there?

umm look. ucla will choose the applicants they want. drew will choose the applicants they want. just because drew wants you...doesnt mean ucla will want you. and the people ucla choose may not suit drew.

they are two separate medical colleges. they have separate admissions committees and when ucla approves of drews students its basically a formality.

hey no one here who is accepted has been asked to send in a deposit for Geffen right?

Hi Everyone,

I got my decison letter today. I remember reading threads (but can't find them) about two kinds of waiting lists. It says I'm assigned the "waiting list without ranking"...is that the worse of the two? 😕

I believe yours is Tier 1 waitlist. If you're on Tier 2, it'll specifically mention it.

Thanks CalBee...that eases my mind a bit. I'm still kinda bumbed b/c I'd just REALLY like to know where I'm going to end up.

By the way, I'm PM'ed you.

When i called, the admissions office said that all they wanted was the acceptance letter from us, not a deposit.

yes you are on high priority waitlist.
good luck. we can wait together 😉.

good luck. we can wait together.

I'll be joining you guys. 🙂 Also got my letter today - the unranked waiting list.

So my question is, should I turn the waitlist-acceptance letter I have to write into a letter of intent? Or should I write two seperate letters?

so ucla all the way? if so then just write the LOI, that basically is telling them...yeah take me off the WL and you have me as a student.

I think I would wait for UCLA upto a certain point... maybe mid-June. After that I gotta start making plans. The other tricky thing with me going to UCLA would be that I have to find a physics 2 class that ends before Aug. 2nd (start of orientation).

And so far the earliest ending community college physics class I can find is Aug. 5th. And I don't think you can register for med school classes till you have completed all the prereqs... So I don't even know how this would all work out.

oohh...
that is gonna suck cause i dont think they would make too much of an exception unless you just pleaded your case in person to the exec adcom. well maybe you should send in that you want to accept the spot on the waitlist but send in that LOI later on...near the 15th of may perhaps after you try looking around for stuff and to see if even going there would be possible.

My letter was dated April 22 and I was put on the unranked waiting list as well.
How's the acceptance rate off the unranked waitlist at UCLA historically?

I told one of the admission office ladies on my interview day that I would have to take summer school physics to finish the prereqs... She said that would be fine, but cautioned me that UCLA does start in August... I think I'll sign up for the physics class, and speak with the professor to let me finish the class a week early. Physics professors are always male and I can be persuasive if I need to be. The bigger problem is that it usually takes a few weeks after the end a class for a grade to be processed, and a transcript to be sent... So yeah, I'll probably have to do a lot of begging and pleading for this to actually work.

unfortunately i think ucla is one of those schools that has varying waitlist movement. some years its a good deal, other years it barely moves at all.

yeah its a crappy answer but its what happens.

well you can finish early and get the prof to give you a signed paper telling UCLA what you got in the class. its not an official transcript but maybe it might be good enough to give some initial proof of your grades to UCLA before they actually get the real transcriptsl

That's a good idea... That's what I'll try to do, and hopefully they'll accept it. Thanks for the advice. 🙂

I'd be interested in knowing if there's some "Ranked Waiting List". The more I've thought about this, the more it's bothered me b/c how are they supposed to pick who on the waiting list gets the available spot if we're all "unranked".

Has anyone called to ask about this? I'm really tempted to...

Hi guys, does anyone know how many people are placed on the unranked waitlist? I've heard some crazy numbers like 600 for columbia. I hope it's not that bad for ucla... :meanie:

Waitlistees are lucky this year b/c of the Cadaver Scandal and Potential Tuition hike, people are less likely to choose UCLA. We already got assurance from Second Look day that the Cadaver situation won't affect this incoming class, and the tuition hike may be much lower than the proposed 40% increase.

Regardless of this, I can we can predict that more people will choose elsewhere...people have been throwing around 30-50% of people getting off from Tier 1 waitlist.

Thanks CalBeE, I hope that is true. Although I've heard that tuition has already risen to $23,000/year now which is almot 100% more than last year. Is that the case?

For us with letters dated 4/22 it isn't looking so good. When did you guys interview? Are there only waitlist spots in the class left? I wanna know so I can brace myself... 😕

Out of State tuition is currently $27,500 before the raise. I think In-state "Fee" is half that price...so I doubt it's $23,000 before the raise.

Actually, last year's tuition was like $16,000. So, an increase of 40% would give about $22,400. I don't know about the less tuition hike. When I called, the exact amount will not be known until June/July, but was proposed to be around $22,000. Lesser the hike, the better. But, I'm not keeping my hopes up for this one. I'll be happy with 40% -- its a damn good school and $22,000 is still $10,000 cheaper than most privates.

I read it somewhere the tuition is approx $21,600 for instate, $33,6000 for out state. It looks like lots of out of state folks may not come this year. Since CA may not be able to give them attractive fin package. esp when it compares to Ivies and some private schools. It may be a good news for instate waitlist folks. Good Luck. :luck: :luck:

I wish we could strike, petition or just flood our gov. with letters telling him noooooooooooooooooooooooo! I know people did that when he proposed a fee hike for community colleges and other stuff.

He's screwing California's best future over!

So, can anyone clarify this situation for me? If you are on the unranked waitlist, is that a GOOD position to be in? .... Is there some sort of lower waiting list?

uclalee said:

the unranked wait list = tier 1....good place to be.

the unranked hold list = tier 2....bad place to be. you dont get considered to be taken off until july and usually UCLA doesnt even go through their entire tier 1 list anyway so hard to get off this one.

When does UCLA generally notify people on the unranked wait list? Is it likely to drag all the way into July, or should there be some movement after May 15?

well after may 15th the executive committee takes a look at who will be going to la....and then they take a look at the waitlisters and start reviewing them again. i am assuming movement will start closer to the end of may after this reviewing process and go on thru june.

why have the tier 2 list then? i dont get them.

It seems like a lot of people from this batch got on the waitlist. It may be because most of the acceptances have been handed out, and the few spots left are given out very catiously...

docmemi said:

just incase of some emergency and everyone that year hates ucla for a reason....they need an insurance plan.

I do feel that schools that have tiers for waitlist are being more honest and up-front...imagine the anxiety and uncertainty of being on a 1000+ people waitlist!!

Totoro is cute, but a bit chubby 😛

2 questions:

1. If we know 100% that we're going to UCLA, are we supposed to write them a letter of intent? Or does withdrawing from other schools and not withdrawing from UCLA automatically let them know that we're definitely matriculating there?

2. Has anyone received their username and password to apply for university housing yet?

YOu should have written a letter accepting a spot in the class...other than that, you don't have to write a letter of intent. Later on, they'll ask you for a deposit, and by paying that, you're indicating you're planning to matriculate.

Oh and everyone, I changed my avatar...no more Vaughn!!
