I GOT IN!

I checked my status page and a letter was sent out yesterday! I called the Office of Admissions and Deanna told me "Congratulations!"

I can't believe it. Still can't.

So... what's this about housing? 😀
hey i had a question.
where it said final decision letter sent.......did the date change and thats how you knew?

The UCLA housing office just called me.
For anyone thinking about this:
Medical students have a guaranteed spot in Weyburn.
Of the 7 buildings, one will be done in for a June move-in date.
The others won't be done until August.

Well, the date changed from 4/22 to 5/19, so I knew something was up. I called the Office of Admissions, and they told me. Yippeee!!!!!

Good luck jlee9531!

thank you very much. now ill be checking the status page every so often. 🙂

wow....so waitlist movement has begun....and they said beginning of June...

do you think there's preference given to those waitlisted relatively recently than to the people waitlisted in the first batch of letters sent in Feb?

congrats emeri....wish we could all have the same luck as you 🙂

Thanks splat2000. According to the threads for the last two years, the earliest waitlist movement was ~second week of June. Additionally, those waitlisted in April had a very, very slim chance of getting off the waitlist than others waitlisted earlier (like in February). I started a thread for all the waitlistees awhile ago:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=121939

I'll definitely still post there to offer what support and advice I can. Best of luck. :luck:

Wut the hell... I interviewed all the way back in February, and I got no news yet!! This sucks mad ballz, yo~

so, about the move-in date. according to my conversation with that strange lady at the housing office who didn't seem to know what was really going on, in terms of entering med students having priority at weyburn, so please take this with a grain of salt, she said "we will be complete with Phase I (whatever that means) and have set a first move-in date to be June 15 and a second move-in date to be sept 15" . me "med students orientation is in aug and school starts right after, so i guess we have to move in before sept 15". Her "our first move-in date is tentatively set for june 15". me, "our orientation is in aug (our conversation pretty much goes around and around and emphasizing the same point). i hope we don't have to pay for that month in between june 15 and aug 2". Her "i'm not sure what they have decided, but I guess you won't have to pay". Me "so when do we get to look at our apt so we can start buying furnitures". Her "our first move-in date is june 15". me, thinking to myself "really? when is the first move-in date again? 🙄 "

but what i did get from that conversation, besides our first move-in date, is that right now they are not done building it yet. well, if someone has a little more patience than me, they can go and check with the housing office again.
didnt the dean say at 2nd look that he would let you guys sleep on his lawn? start tent pitching. 🙂

so since UCLA's med school is now named after David Geffen will former GnR members have any advantage in applying?

(if you don't know who GnR is, or dont' get the connection, don't bother to say anything)

for those who've gotten financial aid awards, could you post what the total expected budget for ucla would be for an instate resident?

at private school, around $50,000 a year (assuming no scholarships; $35k tuition, $15k housing/misc expenses/etc. ~$50k) in loans is pretty standard. i wonder how it is for ucla.

So the WL has started to move...congrats Emeri, you were probably at the tip top of the WL!

And as for housing...I'm doubtful about June 15. UCLA Housing is ALWAYS (I Repeat, ALWAYS) late on schedule. They'll probably push it back to July something anyway.

Oh and JLee, I don't mind sleeping on the lawn as long as they turn the garden sprinklers off...don't want any surprises in the middle of the night. 😉

I know this one guy who got into UCLA and UCSF last year, and he ended up picking UCLA...I almost strangled him for doing that! 😉 But he has his reasons--his family's here in So-Cal, he likes the grading system and clinical rotations at UCLA Med Center more.

Good luck at SF!

I believe it...very tough decision for me to make. It took me three days before I could gather the nerve to send my withdrawl from UCLA. I'm very excited about UCSF though 🙂 Can't go wrong either way.

Change in environment is nice though, right? Plus San Francisco is a really pretty sea-side city. That and Santa Cruz are still my favorite parts of California.

Has anyone besides kwanny and myself still not heard anything post-interview?

Hey you guys,
After I received my Statement of Intiention to Register with my Student ID and my PIN, I tried to fill out the online housing appilcation, but I wasn't able to. It said that I needed to create a PIN, but when I tried to do that I was notified that the"Statement of Intent to Register is not available to you at this time." Do I need to send in my paperwork first before my account is activated? Should I call the Office of Admissions?

Actually I ran into the same problem... and after a while i figured out that what you do is you log in at URSA as a current student using your given ID and PIN. Then they'll ask you to create another PIN and once you do that, you should have no problem using it to fill out your housing application. Hope that helps!

Hey 1150829,
Thank you sooooooo much! It worked. Yaaaaay! 😀 MUAH!

I know a girl who interviewed in March but haven't heard back yet. Not sure why that's the case. She's going to UCSD unless something happens.

hey calbs and others, ive been out of the loop for a couple of weeks...out of town. have you received anything new in the mail? besides sending the two forms, changing your pin, signing up for housing, do we need to do anything else for now??
thanks so much,
memi

nope, nothing in the mail.

I'm gonna be out of town almost the entire month of June, so I'll vanish for a while too 😀

Housing Office called me today and said that part of Weyburn Terrace will be available for move-in on July 1st. I asked if it was possible to move in later in July b/c I'll be paying a full month rent for July at my current apt...they said it would be hard. They also told me that the next part of Weyburn won't be available until Mid-August or so.

And they said so far only two bedroom apts are available...and I really prefer a studio....dilemma...

I have the same problem. I think that Housing is a completely seperate bureaucracy from the med school, so they have no idea that you wanna move in the end of july/beginning of august. I gave the student affairs office a call, and they contacted housing on my behalf. I suggest you do the same, so that we can put some pressure on them, and maybe not end up being gouged an extra grand. I was allotted a studio, btw, so there are some in the first batch of completed housing.

I decided to reject the July 1st offer, and defer to later on instead. They said they would make another offer for the end of August...

I just got offered a 2-bedroom in Weyburn Terrace but the contract starts on July 1st (I don't need a room until August). How do you defer? Did you call the housing office? Do you have to fill out the housing app and get on the waiting list again?

Also, can we find out who our future roomate would be in 2-bedroom apts?

Some news for those still waiting post-interview...

Some decision letters are gonna be mailed out starting on Monday... = )

In the email I got, I could reply to it, saying that I don't want to move in on July 1st and be considered for a late-August move in date instead. However, since classes start at the beginning of August, you should take the July date unless you have other living arrangement (Which I already did).

Aaarrgggh. I also just got offered housing (2 bedroom townhouse in Weyburn Terrace) to move in July 1st. Why does the contract end May 31st, when school begins in August and ends in June? This is really, really bad timing. There must be a way to begin the contract mid-late July. I hope they realize that this is really inconvenient for many of us and decide to change the "move-in" date.

I also just got an offer for WT housing--2 bedroom apartment with a move-in date of June 18th (when ideally i'd like to move in at the end of july). For anyone who was offered a studio, when is your move-in date? I'm pretty bummed that I wasn't offered a studio, but I'll be fine with a 2-bdrm too.

did you guys buy any books, like review books? ahhh i feel like im missing something. im staying at home so i dont have to worry bout housing.

Hi Kwanny,
Just checked my status page. It said that my letter was sent 06/04/04. Good luck guys!

I was just wondering how people were offered a studio apartment in Weyburn Terrace for the summer? I called the housing services today and they told me people were offered studios if they were on a "special allocation list" by their department (i.e. med school). How did people get on this list? Anyone know?

for those who have been offered weyburn terrace housing, what are u gonna do about parking? supposedly we have parking underground, but the contract says that we have to apply for on-campus housing through the parking services office. does that mean that we'll be randomly assigned a spot in some random parking structure...??

No it just means that you have to turn in an application to the parking office since they handle parking. They'll know where you live and that you are a medical student... it's just procedure.

I didn't check until today so I don't know if it posted on Friday or today.

Does anyone know if we have to pay for parking separately, or is it included in the monthly housing fee of $850/875?

Separately... at least that's how they do it with undergrads....

At Weyburn Terrace, parking is not included in the monthly rent. In the older graduate apartment complexes (Keystone/Mentone, Rose, Venice/Berry etc), parking is included in the monthly rent. Why? Probably because real estate in Westwood is very expensive, compared to Palms (where the older buildings are located). If you have to apply for assigned parking, you'll probably get a space as close to where you live as possible; I know for on-campus parking permits, they try to assign med students to parking lots relatively close to the medical school (but they won't let us use Lot 7 right next to the school because that one is reserved for hospital use). Street parking in Westwood is difficult, since many of the surrounding residential areas require residential permits for parking.

im getting kind of frustrated. i need to know about tuition, supplies/books, registering, parking, etc etc ASAP cause ive been out of town for a while and will be for most of the rest of the summer. i will call them wednesday when i get back in town. but for now im really frustrated.

UCLA is getting more and more on my nerves because of its bureaucracy. No one tells us anything directly and kicks us around like soccer balls from one office to the next. ughhhhhh!

but anyway, here's what I found out about housing. if you have a jul 1 move-in date and they make you pay for that entire month, call John Byrne at the housing office or Charlotte Meyers at Student Affairs Office. They should be able to check your status and tell you if you're qualified for Financial Aid. I think most people should since we all are applying for FA. anyway, they'll change your status and you will only have to pay for part of Jul when you actually can move in (late Jul or so).

Now, here's my question. How do we apply for parking? It seems like it's 600+/ year to park on campus. and there are just so many choices. i just want to park close to weyburn cuz i think it's within walking distance of the school. What do I pick and how much is it? there are no distinct choice for this. If anyone know, please post. Thanks!
