Hey Guys - A friend of mine just pointed me to this website and told me it might help me out. Wow, I didn't know this whole SDN thing even existed. Anyways, I just got pulled off the waitlist at UCLA last week. I am really excited! I am a little anxious though because I am leaving for Europe in a couple of days, and I don't return until close to when school starts. I haven't gotten the big packet of info yet from the school and I don't think I will before I leave. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some insight about the housing situation and if there is anything I can do before I leave. I tried to call the housing coordinator, but her voicemail said she was gone for a few weeks. Do most first years live in the graduate housing, this weyburn place? Do you guys think it is the way to go? If anyone knows of anything I should do that would help me get a grasp on housing (or other stuff for that matter) before I take off, I would really appreciate your help. Thanks guys, and I guess I'll see you in a couple months. Looking forward to it!

I can't speak for students who live on campus, but I can give you a perspective from somebody who lives off campus. Getting "hooked up" out here is EZ if you are willing to play the game.

Unlike any city I ever lived in, the best deals are not advertised for free out here. The sweetest deals out here are listed with professional agencies who allow landlords to list their vacancies at no charge, but then charge the prospective renter to view. All run credit checks, but few require references...

At first I was skeptical, but then after looking at the outrageous prices being thrown around for on campus housing, I thought I'd roll the dice. I gave $60 to westside rentals, and about a week and half later I was signing a lease on a newly remodeled studio in Santa Monica for $550/mo. The pad is walking distance to the beach, clubs, restaurants, shops, and about 4 miles from campus without having to deal with the freeway. If you don't have a car, you can ride the bus for 25c each way with a student ID...

When I tell most people about my setup, they don't believe me... but that's there loss. 😀

"anyway, they'll change your status and you will only have to pay for part of Jul when you actually can move in (late Jul or so). "

Dude, u sure about this? Myers told me no such thang. Ill try again i guess, but id like to know if other people are managing to arrange something at the end of july. what she told me is that i dont need to pay up front, but that when the fin aid comes in itll be sucked out of that--which blows.

UCLA is getting more and more on my nerves because of its bureaucracy. No one tells us anything directly and kicks us around like soccer balls from one office to the next. ughhhhhh!

Now, here's my question. How do we apply for parking? It seems like it's 600+/ year to park on campus.

Just so you guys don't think you're alone. With Case, they haven't told us exactly when classes even start... I know it's Aug 5th,6th,7th, or 8th ... They sent out a packet a couple days ago and I know apart of that packet is for housing, but I don't know the rest...

And as for parking, It'll be $68/month for the lot I picked next to the med school... Don't wanna be walking too far in the snow. 🙁 Oh, and I had to go to campus to talk to the med school people to tell me to go to the campus parking office (across campus) to tell me to go home (walk back to the med school where my car was) and do it on-line... That was fun (if you like walking)... So see, they're all a bureaucracy. They're big schools... They have to be.

I'm from out of state and am not familiar with the housing at UCLA. Will at studio at Weyburn terrace be worth $875? Can you find a cheaper studio close to campus?

You may be able to find some for less.... You don't mind cardboard do you? (j/k) $875 is a good price. Also, may I suggest looking into a 1-bdroom... It may be a tad more expensive, but worth it.

Hey everyone,
I'm not exactly sure if I understand the problem. When the housing people called to make your Weyburn Terrace offers, they did not give you any choice of when you'd like to move in? A woman from HOA called me a few weeks ago and made me an offer for a 2-person townhouse with a move-in date of July 1st. I told her that I live out of state and that it would be impossible for me to move in any earlier than the last week of July, but that I also couldn't wait for mid-August since I'd have no place to shack up until then. So then she made me an offer for a July 26th move-in, which I accepted. Since then I have received and returned a housing contract which has me scheduled to pay for only the last week of July. I am not sure what happened when your offers were made, but the lady who called me was very accommodating and changed my move-in date right over the phone, so I might try calling the housing department back directly instead of going through the med student affairs office or whatever. Has anyone else accepted a similar offer? Any idea when/how we find out about roommates?
So psyched for freshman year random roomie madness all over again,
T

just to make sure everyone is on the same boat, i received health clearance forms today.

I'm thinking of applying to Geffen. Does anyone know what the average MCAT score is for those accepted? I still haven't gotten my results back ( :scared: ), but I wanna know what to expect!

Whattt? I was told that there were only two options for housing: either move in July 1st, or move in in late August/early September. Who did you speak to? Do you think that they might give me a refund if I've already paid for the entire month of July? That's not faaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrr! Grrrrrrrr. 😡

Yeah, they told me that initially too. But then I told the woman who called from the housing office that I absolutely NEEDED to move in the last week of July, no sooner and no later. Try calling back if you really can't move in July 1 (I already have plans to be out of the country until late July, plus I don't live in LA)-- they will try to accommodate you. Good luck.

UCLA's bureacracy is rather frustrating to deal with. At first I thought the guranteeing of housing is good news, but now I have to give up the July 1st offer and try for late-August instead (It's fine b/c I can stay at my current apt). I think I may end up trying to find a studio elsewhere, cause it doesn't seem like Weyburn offers a lot of studios.

$875 for a studio, with utilities included, is a very good deal, considering its proximity to the campus.

Hey Caleb,

Do you live in a studio within walking distance to the UCLA Geffen now? How long can you stay there in your current apartment? Do you have a month to month option at the end of this lease? Some apartment routinely gives that option in the contract.

Thanks,

That name sounded familiar, so I googled it... And this is what I found. However, I was thinking it would be a startrek name or something.

Good job helping me find Caleb, Mr. Reddly. The man whom I am talking to is number seven on your list. He must be glad that he is one of the top ten. 😀

That thing was so darn long, I was sure he would be on the list! 🙁

😛

But seriously, I saw your typo (or was it a typo?), and thought..."hmm, isn't that a startrek name? I'll just google it to check." When one of the first hits was the 'Catholic Encyclopedia', I had to click and then post 😀
Didn't find the startrek ref though 🙁

I even read the list (well, tried). Number 6 was funny... If I understood it correctly. 😕

Hey guys!
I took UCLAgal's advice and tried to speak to John Byrne in the housing office to try to get him to change my move-in date. John Byrne wasn't available, but I spoke to Jaime and told here that I could not move in on July 1st. She put me on hold and asked me if I would like to move in July 15th, and I said "Yay!" 😀

Caleb or CalbeE whoever, I am still waiting for him. I am no bounty hunter at all.

I have a MS1 here at Geffen who needs to sublet an apartment from July 16 to September 15. Looks like he could get one of your spot either at Weyburn Terrace and your current apartment as a sublet. The man is waiting for a spot of his own in Weyburn too. He was told that there would be a good chance for him around September 15.

Does anyone else would have to leave your apartment or studio unoccupied for that period too? Thanks

Thanks

Hey CalCrew,

So for my current apt, the leasing contract ends in July for me. However, my roommate (I share a bedroom with him) will stay for one more year. He found a new roommate to replace me, but he doesn't need the apt until Sept or so, so that's why I can stay there until August and pay that month.

have y'all received anything recently from student affairs besides the health stuff?? i havent checked my po box in a week, and i know something is there or on its way. thanks.

Hey Cal,
Thanks for the reply. My brother will move in his friend house in mid July. It is within a short driving distance.

You don?t have anything to lose between UCLA and Columbia. Either way is a win. My brother is really happy with Geffen. He is glad that he didn't go for any out-of-state interview at all. We could have grown up in either Chicago or New York. So we are not too exciting about those cities. But you don't have your family here in Cali like we do.

A quick question, is it a good idea or is there a chance for a UCLA premed to join LINC Program? When should he do it? Is there any other program that is worthwhile besides the volunteer activity at the Medical Center?

Finally, don?t forget to check if someone has left some quarter (electronically) in those slot machines. Sometime it is wise to wait until someone is fed up with his/her machine. You might take over some mini fortune. Anyway, don't go to fast on these machines. They seem to prefer slower hands. Good luck 🙂

Last year's white coat ceremony took place in the afternoon. I think it was done by 3:00 pm when everyone went outdoors for the reception. :luck:

arginine. thanks for helping out. i have some questions about studying...i think we asked you before. do you find it hard to be self-disciplined to study, especially taking into consideration the pbl format...like you have lots of free time? do you find lecture helpful/do you have to go or can you just study on your own? lastly, do you have enough free time to go out and see friends...like how often or how much? how about the gym? guess im just trying to figure out your daily or weekly lives. i heard ucla isnt that hordcore on the students??

thanks again.

Well, I am new to this thread because I was just admitted yesterday. I just wanted to say hi to everyone and how excited I am to be going to Geffen in august!!

So, a quick question (the first of many most likely)...does class start on August 2 or does orientation start on August 2? How does one apply for housing?

Thanks everyone!!! See you in a little over a month!!

Hi Everyone,

I just got admitted yesterday too. I'm also concerned about the housing situation, especially since I am leaving the country for most of July. Has anyone heard anything new about the Weyburn Terrace apartments, and does anyone have any suggestions about where to live? Thanks and see y'all soon.

First of all, congrats to everyone who has gotten off that crazy waitlist. Yay! Aren't you guys excited? 😀

1150829: I just told the housing office that I just could not move in on the first. I told them that my schedule didn't permit me to move in at that time. That was it. I didn't have to sign a new contract or anything. The person over the phone put me on hold and asked me if I would like to move in on the 15th of July. That's it. I hope you've called them already because they were supposedly in the process of assigning apartments and roommates as of last week. Or so they told me...

hope that helps. and to answer your questions, yes its orientation that starts that week.

Great! Thanks for all the help...you all are extremely helpful

I just had an unpleasant runaround with the housing office. I just sent in my application for the Weyburn Terrace and then called them this afternoon. The housing office stated that I was placed on the waiting list. I mentioned that I was a medical student and that I was guaranteed housing. He then said that I may hear back from them in July at the earliest, and that the room may be available in September. Did anyone else have a similar experience with this? Is there anyone else I can speak to about expediting this situation because I am leaving the country for most of July, so if I cannot get graduate housing, I will have to find an apartment this week. Thanks.

I just talked to Housing today and they have me worried. I completed my application for a spot on the 14th of June, shortly after I was pulled off of the waitlist. They told me that they believe I will get a spot in Weyburn Terrace but they have no idea when (I guess the are still building much of the development and the demand is out pacing the construction, I am from out of state with no idea of the building situation).

Will I be able to find a place to live week by week starting late July until something opens up? Can I sleep in anyones bath tub??;-)

well, they wouldn't do it over the phone for me but they told me to send an email to housing.... and now my move-in date is July 22! yay~! 😀

looking forward to seeing my future classmates 🙂

Here's a typical week from the first 8-week block we had last August...
Monday: 8-10 am attend small group PBL, read through and discuss case of the week. Generate differential diagnoses, action plan, list of learning issues. Everyone picks a learning issue to write a brief 1 to 2 page paper about (should be posted online by 12 midnight Wednesday).
10 am -12 noon: 2 lectures in a row (10 minute break in between)
Afternoon: free time
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday : 10 am-12 noon, 2 lectures
Afternoon: some kind of lab or small group activity that runs from 1 pm to 3, 4, or 5 pm (these are all required and they make us sign in)
Friday: 8-10 am attend small group PBL, find out the conclusion of the case, discuss everyone's learning issues, wrap up any loose ends regarding essential learning issues.
10am - 12 noon: 2 lectures
Afternoon: free time
Weekend: sometime between 5 pm Friday and 8 am Monday, take the online self-assessment quiz of the week (accessible from any computer with an internet connection, so you can take it even if you're out of town)

Lots of students use the free early mornings or afternoons to go to the gym or hang out with friends. If you are really disciplined, you can get a lot of your studying done during the week, so your weekends are free. This is especially true during Block 1 if you were a hardcore science major in undergrad and already have a good understanding of genetics, cell bio, immunology. Some of my classmates who were science undergrads at UCLA felt they had a lot of free time. You do, however, get less free time as the year progresses (more time spent in labs, small groups in the afternoon)--Block 3 (January to March) felt especially busy.

Even though it's PBL, many of the lectures are covering the same material, only in a more abbreviated fashion. Teaching quality varies from fabulous to mediocre; lecture attendance is not required, but my class seems to have a very high attendance rate. I end up going to class about 80% of the time; we have access to powerpoint slides used by professors. We've been advocating for more detailed lecture outlines from professors (apparently they used to give out extremely detailed notes so that some students didn't even bother to buy textbooks, but they've been instructed to cut down their notes for the new curriculum). The weekly online quizzes actually help me stay on track with the material--you get immediate feedback and you can compare your results with the class average on a bar graph. "grades" for the quiz don't count--you just have to take the quiz.

I've learned this year that it's important to filter through the huge volume of material and figure out the basic essentials to focus on, rather than trying to memorize every little detail. Students from previous years have advised getting review books during first year to keep track of what's important for the boards. With an organ-based curriculum, the level of integration is great for clinical learning, but it's hard to know which material will be emphasized if you get a different prof for each lecture, rather than one prof teaching an entire course.

Hope this answers your questions! :luck:
