UCSF Interviews!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey all,

I was just wondering if any one knew if the interviewers look at your PharmCAS essay beforehand as well, and if they ask any questions from that essay in addition to the supplemental. My interview is this friday and as it's drawing nearer I can feel my nerves spike up! Congrats to the people who are all done interviewing, and good luck to everyone who is still waiting to interview!

I saw that my interviewer had printed out not only my Form B but also my entire PharmCAS application. She asked me a question from the PharmCAS extracurriculars section, so I'd be prepared for anything. Best of luck! :luck:

They'll definitely look at your pharmcas/supp. I would say that 80% of the questions they'll ask during the interview are specific to your application essays.

Good luck to those interviewing this week! I'll be doing the discussion room/tour on Friday afternoon so hopefully I'll get to meet some of you 🙂

thanks for the advice, ill def check out those places before the interview......also one more question!!!

my best friend is driving up to SF with me...and will be waiting for me in the car during my interview time....is there anywhere around campus that she could wait for me, rather than just driving around or sitting in the car. I know most libraries close early on Fridays so I was just looking for a little bit of advice for her before I drive up tomorrow for my Friday interview!! would she need an ID card to go into the library, etc?

Thanks so much in advance 🙂

When my brother took me to the interview he studied in the UCSF library while he was waiting for me. It's right across the street and a little down from where you'll be interviewing. He's definitely not a UCSF student, so I don't think you need to worry about having an ID. Also, from the library website it looks like it's open until 8PM on Fridays.

Actually, I'm interviewing today and the interview location is on the same side of the street as the library today.

so for my interview..I was prepared to get asked about my essays and pharmCAS application or what path I wanted to take, but it turned out that for my whole interview I think he didn't even look at my stuff lol. I was pretty surprised.

so for future interviewers..just a heads up..it really depends on who you get, some faculty like to ask about your essays while others are pretty different and ask you crazy questions (in my case I got 3 scenarios and some other tough questions)

goodluck all

I just had my interview today, and I think I did really well. At least, when I was leaving and right before the door closed, I heard, "He did pretty well," so I think that's a good sign.

I got asked more random questions myself as well, and very little off of my PharmCAS and supplementals. It felt that they wanted to make sure that this was what I wanted to do, and I told them that I didn't spend the past 3 years taking classes and working full time and volunteering for something that I wasn't sure about.

The interview was really relaxed for me. They emphasized that they wanted to make sure that it was a conversation, and after they asked me questions, I asked them about residencies and why more PharmD's are doing them, and also about the possibility of working while going to school. The whole entire time both the student and the faculty member were smiling and we were joking as well, so I think I did well.

We'll see when I get the decision letter...

Good luck to everybody who still has to interview!

Thank you to all of you who responded to me about the PharmCAS essay. I had my interview yesterday, and it turns out that they did ask me questions from it. I'm glad I was prepared to answer questions from both apps. Anyways, good luck to both the people who are still waiting to interview and the people who are waiting for acceptances! =)

I'm getting pretty nervous. Is the Feb 15th interview the last one?

Yeah, I'm getting nervous too, I'm Feb 15th at 11:30am. Maybe being the last group to interview we'll stand out in the admission committes minds more! Good Luck everyone!

HI GUYS!

To those who had interview on Feb 15th, how do you guys feel? Im sure you did great!

God Luck to everyone. Now that the last interviews are completed, the waiting will be intensified!

Hi everyone!

It's too bad I only found out about this website on the day of my interview! It would have been helpful to see all the suggestions and sample questions, but oh well. It's over now.

Hi guys,
I gave a tour on Friday night and wanted to give you some ideas for things I did (or wished I had done) while passing the time.
1-Put your name on the campus housing waiting list if you even have only the faintest of desires to live there. Once you get your acceptance letter, you can email the necessary people your code to solidify your slot on the list.
2-Take a graduate-level biostatistics course (then you'll be able to waive an 8am class in the fall!)
3-Study up on your P-Chem if you're interested in waiving Thermodynamics in the fall.
4-Enjoy your freedom!

Anyway, I really enjoyed meeting some of you on Friday and best of luck! 😀

How do we put our names on the waiting list? Do we have to fill out the application at campuslifeservices?

btw, thanks for the tour! Happy 3-day weekend! :hardy:

So, click on this link: http://campuslifeservices.ucsf.edu/housing/mb/
On the list to the left, you'll see links for Mission Bay, Avenue, and Aldea housing. When you select any of these, at the bottom of the list that shows up underneath it, there's an "Apply Now" link. click there 🙂

God Luck to everyone. Now that the last interviews are completed, the waiting will be intensified!

yeah... some of us have been waiting since Jan 25th. >___<

Ditto on the Jan 25th! Out of all the interviews I've been on, I really really really liked UCSF the best out of all them; it's making me woosh! Just glad that there's a lot of midterms to take my mind off of it (not really though). Good luck everyone!

I've been waiting since Feb 2nd... so not that far off from Jan 25th. Im sure we will here soon though. Someone who interviewed on the 15th told me that Joel said that people who interviewed early would be hearing in about a week and this was on said on Feb 15th so we should be hearing soon.

Hang in there guys, we are all in the same boat. Lets just stay positive and aim high!

Good Luck!

Thanks for that info! About the housing...what is your opinion of Mission Bay vs. The Avenue? I don't know if I want to live so far from campus (MB), but I'm not sure I want to live in endless fog either (Ave.)! I am trying to decide where to put my name on the waiting list.

Any other applicants/students who have an opinion, feel free to respond also! 🙂

If you do well in university level p-chem, how easy do you think it would be to pass out of thermo?

Hey CaL

I totally share your opinion about MB vs Ave. However, although MB is 30 minutes away, it LOOKS SO BEAUTIFUL from the photos and the state of the art gym is really attractive to me. However, rolling out of bed 20 minutes before class is also perusading. I think it would be difficult to have a car at Ave. because there is only street parking. So if a car is a must for you, it may be difficult.

I decided to hold of on applying for housing until I hear back from UCSF. I don't feel right putting my name on the list just yet. Hopefully we will hear something by the end of the week.

Im so ANXIOUS 😕:scared: but at the end of the day, if it is meant to be, IT WILL BE 😳!

I'm feeling the same way as everyone else....anxious waiting to hear back. I was hoping we would hear from UCSF at the end of last week, but it sounds like it may happen this week. My interview was on Jan. 25, so the wait seems like it has been forever! Hopefully only a couple more days now 🙂

I agree that the Mission Bay campus looks beautiful. I'm thinking that seems like a good option if I go to UCSF. I think it may be worth being a little further from campus to live in a new facility. The fitness center there is also appealing to me. However, once I have an 8am class to get to, I may change my mind, haha. A current student living at MB told me that she has to wake up about an hour earlier than students living close to campus to get to class on time. Something to consider....

One hour? Ouch.

Seriously. That might make me change my mind!

The fitness center would be awesome though. But with our commute being longer, that leaves less time to work out in the first place. Something to consider...

Does anyone know if the area around Mission Bay is fun to hang out in? Are there good restaurants and good places to study? I guess I could always shuttle over to main campus to study, but I tend to prefer coffee shops anyway.

I keep wondering if the 30min commute might actually be helpful for feeling like there is a "break" between school and home. And maybe I could study on the shuttle? I don't know how well I'd do with that...but at least there's the built-in 30 min nap either way. 🙂

Maybe we should all just get together and rent a house...

O Man! I'm so hoping to get into UCSF! I totally understand why you guys are anxious, cause I just did mine last Friday and I can't wait either!:scared:

Everyday, at least 3 of my friends would ask me if I heard back from UCSF. It never fails too that everytime they ask, my heart will skip a few beats. hehehe This is a killer! Do you think we'll hear from them by the end of next week?

ucsf adcom starts meeting next week.

i don't know if ucsf sends out offers in batches after each meeting or not, but there should be several adcom meetings spanning at least a couple of weeks. after that, a lot of it is dependent on how quickly applicants accept or decline their offers that will determine how quickly more offers can be sent out so that ucsf can fill the class.

Last year, people started hearing from them around the last week of February and first week of March. However, a good portion of people heard from them during spring break, including waitlisters. I remember on SDN, the letters seemed to have been mailed out in small "batches" as there were two or three SDNers at a time who posted their acceptances. So I guess cross your fingers and start checkin' your mailboxes! But again, if you don't hear from them in the next couple of weeks, all is not lost :luck:

Oh yeah, FYI, acceptance letters (and waitlist/rejection letters I'm sure) come as a normal small envelope...so don't think it's necessarily bad if you don't get a big envelope. Rip the letter open and read it first 🙂

About housing, I personally would prefer the Avenue houses. It's close to campus and a lot cheaper than finding something else near campus. I don't live in Mission Bay, but I do know it is very nice there. However, in my opinion, I'm really glad that I live relatively close to campus and that I can go home when I need to. I would take advantage of the Avenue houses, but that's just me. If not, there are always people looking for roommates or places up on craigslist (where I found my place).

Good luck everyone! Hope to see you guys next year 😀

good call...

If you do well in university level p-chem, how easy do you think it would be to pass out of thermo?

You know, that's kind of a tough call. I didn't take PChem in undergrad, so I couldn't take the exam. My boyfriend was a chem major in undergrad and thought our PChem wasn't quite as intense as what he had, though. I guess it all sort of boils down to how long ago you took the course and how motivated you can get yourself to study for something like this instead of venturing out into the sunshine. Our P1 class had one person successfully waive Thermo, but 5 or 6 waived Kinetics in the winter, so maybe that Thermo exam is more difficult? It could just be that other students who qualified to take the thermo exam didn't study for it and just walked in and took the waiver to see if they could pass it anyway. I have no idea. Having taken the class, though, if I had had the chance to waive Thermo, I gladly would have studied over the summer to do it. More than anything, it gets you out of a 3 hour weekly lab.

The professor who taught the 1st half of our thermo course retired, so I don't know who will be teaching the course or writing the waiver exam for y'all. I guess it just comes down to personal choice. If you end up not waiving the class, I can tell you right now that you will have an AWESOME thermo TA who is one of our classmates. He was voted student of the quarter for helping us out so much with PChem (and just being an overall stellar person). 🙂

I love P-Chem. Why would you ever want to waive it.

I love pchem too, but I figure if I learned the material enough to be able to waive it, it's worth a shot. It would make my schedule a bit easier. It won't be the end of the world if I can't waive out of it, though.

hey people! why are we talking about waiving classes now? how about let's first get into the program before we begin thinking about housing and waiving courses! 😉

Motivation for battling senioritis, I suppose 😛

I was reading up on last year's UCSF thread and it is strange to see how UCSF students like Zwiggles and Senzabee were stressing last year about whether they got in. YOU guys went through exactly what we are going through except now that you are almost done with your first year at UCSF, it seems strange for us applicants to think that such great students like you guys, were once in our shoes. It provides me with a sense of comfort in knowing that everyone around me is going through the same thing.

There is not an hour that goes by without me thinking about my performance at my UCSF interview and whether or not I made the cut.

This week, I have a midterm, a paper, and a quiz, but instead of focusing on these activities, all I am doing is thinking/hoping/dreaming of UCSF!

I really hope we here soon because at this point, I have a mini heart attack everytime I reflect back on my interview.

Good LUCK to ALL OF YOU GUYS and I just hope that we will all look back on this in a few weeks and smile.

I wish everyone the best. All we can do is stay positive and believe in fate... AND... HATE ON SNAIL MAIL - LOL!

Have a great week Guys!
