Hey guys, generally, what is a good turnaround time for the secondary?

Sooner the better since they won't send you an invite until you've completed the secondary. If I remember correctly, the secondary for UA didn't require any essay questions or the like. I think I completed and sent back mine the same day I got it, took like 5 min.

I work for UMC, and they have a cap on tuition reimbursement- you max out at $7,500. So it won't get you very far in your med school education.

I have a question, too. Can anyone give me some feedback on how long it took to get your secondary after turning in your AMCAS and having it verified? I don't have my LORs in yet (one person is being really slow), but I don't think that should matter.

Depends on the school. UofA sends a packet secondary to fill out, other schools send you a link to their online website secondary. Two to three weeks from being verified would probably be a decent estimation. Especially if they have to mail you paperwork. I had some secondaries faster since they sent me a name/password to their online system. Also some schools only offer secondaries to a select group, others send secondaries to everyone. The more they screen the longer you would have to wait for a secondary app. Not to mention it can take two to three weeks for AMCAS to verify your app. I know UofA is now using the AMCAS LOR service and I am not sure if you have to have your LORS all in to have them verify your app. Submit it asap if you can. Hope that helps some. 😎

PS We love seeing all of you guys come interview, makes us reflect that we have only been med students since July. How quickly things change!

Does anyone know if it is acceptable NOT to stay for the entire interview day (Tucson campus)? Would it hurt my chances at admissions if I left early (right after my scheduled interview in the morning?)

I unfortunately have to be back in Glendale (2 hours away) for one of my master's classes, and attendance is mandatory.

My interview runs from 11-12, and I need to be back in Glendale by 3.

Also, I already applied last year, took the campus tour, orientation, etc. and don't feel I would be missing much if I left early.

Has anyone ever left early or been in a similar situation?

Thanks.

I can't say that I've been in a similar situation but I doubt it would be a problem. The admissions folks at UA are very understanding and I couldn't see them having any objections to you leaving early, especially considering your circumstances. It might be a good idea to let Ann know ahead of time so they don't waste a lunch though.

Yeah, I think so long as you let them know, it shouldn't be a big deal. Just make sure you tell them your legitimate reason (class) instead of just not wanting to be there.

I did this when I interviewed for the second time at Indiana University. I had my interview, but had already seen the campus and stuff, so I went to gross anatomy and lecture with my friend who was a first year.

anyone know when is the latest we can interview to be considered for the December acceptance list?

anyone know when is the latest we can interview to be considered for the December acceptance list?

They havent told us when the exact dates will be, that might be a question better aimed at Tanisha. The only date I have heard is the Jan 15th deadline for applications.

For the Tucson campus, the fact sheet for last year's matriculated averages read something like, "applicants considered -- 28.something MCAT, 3.something GPA" then "applicants accepted - 30.something MCAT, 3.something GPA." Does this mean that applicants with numbers less than the "considered" column actually AREN'T considered by the admissions committee? If so, why does (almost) everyone receive an interview invite? And also, one of the current students mentioned the RANGE of MCAT acceptances last year being something from 22-42, so obviously scores less than the 28.something MCAT were considered. Why am I so concerned about this when all I can really do at this point is wait? Well, if I'd known my 27 MCAT wouldn't even reach the "applicants considered" pile, I wouldn't have wasted my time with scheduling the interviews, perhaps studied for the Sep MCAT and retaken it, or not even have applied this year with unrealistic expectations. Anyone mind posting if they know someone with a similar score who did make it in last year? And almost everyone who graduates from UA has a high GPA, that is pretty much a given... Thanks.

I don't recall the exact week, but I think the adcom is meeting in the first half of November to discuss the December acceptances. So you'd need to be complete by that point. I would definitely call to confirm - they did mention this when I was in their office, but I'm sorry I don't remember specifically what they said.

I think the considered column is still the average of all students they considered, not minimum. Their website confirms they only consider applicants with MCAT of 22 or higher.

Did you check the MSAR for UA? I think the 09-10 MSAR lists 10th percentile scores, median, and 90th percentile for each MCAT section. So verbal 10th percentile is 7, BS is 9, and PS is 8.

You just have to be over the 22 minimum line to be considered..... so no worries for a 27 lol. I never heard numbers but wouldnt be surprised based on my classmates if our scores range 22-42. All Arizona residents get an interview at Tucson, Phoenix has different criteria though. Try not to overstress about it. Just be yourself and it will happen. And if you have to reapply, then you do it. Good luck with your interview! 😎

No, I didn't. But thank you for sharing that. Unfortunately, my BS is exactly a 9, and my PS is exactly an 8 so that already puts me in the lowest 10%. I probably would have retaken if I'd known about that... 🙁

Not an AZ resident, but if their office doesn't know, then what makes you think one of the forum members would? 😕

Oh and sorry if this is a repeat of what's been posted before, but just an fyi that both campuses will be able to read your interview feedback forms from whomever interviews you. That's how they get their 2 total interviews. So just remember to perform well on both days, even if there's one campus you might prefer over another. :luck:

Don't stress out about your MCAT score. I personally know people in our class that have a score <= yours. Your MCAT score is not the most important thing to UA, as long as you score high enough (which you have) to show that you would not be an academic threat if they were to accept you, then it doesn't really matter IMO what you pulled on the MCAT, at least in the eyes of UA's admissions committee. UA is much more interested in accepting someone they feel would be a compassionate physician who would benefit the population of Arizona than they are someone who was able to score in the top 90th percentile on the MCAT and pull a 4.0 undergrad GPA.

In short, if you've got a stellar personal statement, strong letters of recommendation, impressionable interviewing skills and ECs that demonstrate a passion and sincere interest in a career centered on caring for others, I believe without any doubt that you would have no problem getting accepted to UA.

I got in off the wait list this year with a 27 (I suck at Physics) MCAT. I met with Tanisha once I got the wait list letter and she told me that they had NO PROBLEM with my MCAT, and that the reason I did not get an automatic admit was due to my "lack of experience" since I pretty much had no research and only one REAL volunteer experience.

Don't worry about the MCAT score that much. Just kick ass in the interview like I did and I will see you next year 🙂😀

I had a 27 (7V, 9PS, 11BS) and decided to retake to raise my Verbal score because I ran out of time and didn't read the last 2 verbal passages. I ended up running out of time on both the PS and V sections the second time around and doing worse with a 24 (7V, 7PS, 10BS)! I have always been slow, had to blindly bubble in the last 1/3 of the ACT in highschool. How is this going to look to the admissions committee?

Any suggestions for kicking ass in the interview?🙂

Do you mind saying what the breakdown was?

I interviewed in Phoenix and Tucson in mid-September so I obviously haven't been accepted yet, but I can give you advice on the interview. Both were extremely laid-back. Tucson only does closed-file interviews, so the interviewer basically just wants to get to know you. You can take the interview anywhere you want to by highlighting certain aspects of your life. Phoenix interviewers choose closed or open, and mine was closed so it was very similar to Tucson. Also I believe there are at least 100 different interviewers at each school, so you can potentially have a drastically different experience than I did. Good luck either way!

The breakdown was (10B, 10V, 7PS), in all my practice tests I was usually able to buffer my physics score with better performance in the chemistry passages but I got an unlucky test with some crazy diagram I couldn't figure out. I'm sorry to hear you went through the stress of taking it again and did not see an improvement. I dont think I would take the MCAT more than three times but I think its still safe to retake once more if you feel prepared. Don't rush it though, make the third one count!

My interviews went great. I tell people my "secret" was just really having a true sense of who I am and what I have to offer. Interviewers really want to see that you have a passion for medicine and are fully committed to the profession. I never did mock interviews or practiced responses, I just went in there with the full intention of being 100% myself and I think they liked that. I also did get lucky with my PHX interviewer. Her name was Dr. Maricella Moffit and we just clicked and saw eye to eye on a lot of things. She wanted me to come give her college age children a pep talk!

Also, don't be discouraged if you get wait listed. I cried for 3 hours when I got that letter because I thought my number was an IMPOSSIBILITY...but hey it happened and I feel very lucky to be here!

Thanks for the responses! For people who have interviewed, did anyone by any chance ask when is the latest we can interview to be considered for the December accept list?

I have interviewed at UA Med for the current cycle and just wanted to post some thoughts. The students at UA seem extremely happy, the staff is friendly, the curriculum is well organized, and the school just seems like a great fit for my personality. I just cannot see myself going to another school as the students seem to balance academics and social life equally. Not to mention for being an instate school the tuition is reasonable and Tucson has some breathtaking views. I really really hope to hear some good news from this school 🙂

We are happy lol! We all have a blast but we work hard too. Glad it went well for you 😎

Yay! I'm interviewing in Tucson on Monday the 27th. Anyone else gonna be there? I'll also be in Phoenix on November 5. Congrats to everyone that's interviewing.

I know U of A is doing rolling admissions this year... does anyone know when they starts or how frequently they're accepting? Thanks.

I think the first batch of acceptances goes out in December, then monthly batches thereafter with waitlist formation in March as well.

Hi all,

It's great to see this thread going, and I love the input from some of the current students. So my story is that my undergrad from ASU had a gpa of 3.42 coupled with some withdrawals, overall a very spotty record. I went on to get my master's in counseling with a gpa of 3.87 and finished my sciences post-bac with all A's except for a B+ in first semester orgo. My mcat score was 32 (10 BS 11PS and 11 VB), but unfortunately I have no research experience, and other than my current shadowing of a physician I have no health care related experiece since high school (where I worked in a doctor's office for 2 years). I have an interview at Phoenix this Friday, and was wondering if (1) am I a strong candidate?, (2) does the Phoenix interview mean I can't get into Tucson even if accepted?, (3) how many people are accepted to Phoenix this year?, (4) what research opportunities are available for students?, and (5) how is the social scene differ for med students between the two campuses? Any questions that could be answered would be much appreciated!

The second part of my thread is my residency. I was born in AZ, lived in-state until 25 years old and have been finishing my master's over the last three years in MA. The last time I voted was in AZ and the last income tax I filed was in AZ. In addition both of my parents still live in Phoenix (I consider my Mom's house my permanent address). My driver's license and car registration is from MA, because they require it for me to drive here. Am I still considered a resident?

You just gotta fix that license and registration BS...

How did you guys get Phoenix interviews? All I got was an email for the Tucson Location, I was pretty sure I clicked that I preferred to go to phoenix as well....

Also I emailed the adcom, but haven't heard from them...in like 2 weeks.

Yeah, you had to check the "applying to both schools" area on the secondary. I got both invites on the same day, at the same time.

Thanks madevans

I guess maybe I forgot to check both boxes...hopefully I can ask them to change that

Maybe I'm stupid, wrong, or some combination of the two, but I thought I was told by Tanisha while I was in Tucson that the first batch of acceptances would very likely be going out the end of October-beginning of November. While I was at the Phoenix interview though, we were told we wouldn't hear anything till January. Anybody else here these two different dates for the different schools???

Actually both campuses are following the same admission timelines and will release the first batch of acceptances in December (dunno yet when in the month) and will release more every month with the rest in March as well as waitlist notifications in March.

Good luck everyone in being in that first batch!🙂

do you guys know how many students they will be taking at each school for the first batch?

I asked that in my phx interview but they wouldn't elaborate at all on it. If anyone by chance gets more info from somewhere PLEASE share!🙂

I heard something like 5 a week. Every week they'll meet, pick a random stack of 20-25, and let the best 5 in. They'll do the 5 per week for a while I guess...

Who did you hear that from? When I asked Tanisha while I was in Tucson for my interview she told me that they wouldn't elaborate on the specific process they would go through with the first batch of acceptances in December because they hadn't fully figured it out yet.

Not sure about this....where did you hear this from?

I don't know her name, but you guys will know her from Phoenix. She wrapped up the day after the financial aid lady, and asked us if we have any final questions. She was fairly young and had braces.

As an interesting side note, she said "I just want to explain how admissions work here so you don't beleive any wrong crap on student doctor network. People say a lot of stuff on there and only half of its true. I also want to be as transparent as possible so you guys don't log onto SDN every hour and live the next few months in neurotic insanity."

Wow... looks like I'll be waiting 'til March, or August. Hahaha.

Sounds like Tara Cunningham... And irregardless of what batch or interview or whatever you know you will still be on SDN hoping for some tidbit of info. And fyi all the info I have heard to share with you guys is that it will be MONTHLY batches not weekly. Good luck! :luck: And there are a few other MSI's that still post on here if you have questions about UofA or our lives as med students. Fire away! 😎

PS They will post a note on the announcements page of UofA COM Admissions before they will announce any admissions acceptances. That is one page to check on every so often

I am glad this thread is still going, but before it continues I think it is a good time to discuss this.

I hope it wasn't a shock to you that most people involved in admissions know about this site. I actually think Tara had some words of wisdom for you. This is the internet, and I think to say that ½ of everything is correct on the internet is a conservative estimate.

This UA premed thread is now in its second year. A lot of different people have posted in it over a long period of time, and a lot of different things have been expressed. Just keep in mind that you should take everything with a grain of salt in here, as you should do on SDN in general. SDN can be a lot of fun, and you can learn a lot of things from it, but you have to have a good filter for it to work right. As I learned early on, around here you can never take anything too seriously in and of itself. On an internet forum alone it is just way too difficult to differentiate between opinion and fact, between levity and seriousness.

Admissions, from the view of the applicant, is a very difficult, anxious, and provoking process, as you all know. A lot of emotions can get stirred up, and when that occurs a lot of people can start speculating or assuming things. It is a bad idea to assume the opinions in here expressed by your fellow premeds are always true, just as it is good to be skeptical about things you hear by word of mouth.

Even for us current students, although glad to help answer your questions about student life or our experience here so far, sometimes by the nature of the questions a lot of what we can offer is just our opinion, like anyone, anywhere else. You can take it for what it's worth to you. Personally, I try to express when I either I know something or believe something, but I'd be the first to admit that it is impossible to do this perfectly on an internet forum. We will also do our best to answer questions about admissions. However, there is a lot we do not know and perhaps it would be good to make that clear at this point. Your best resource is always the admissions staff. They are really an awesome staff and great about answering questions; just try to understand that they are quite busy this time of year.

Just remember guys, this is only a forum for discussion. Have fun, and hopefully you can learn a little along the way, but again don't take it too seriously. Best wishes.

I assume if U of A will begin sending out acceptances in December, they will also start sending rejections at this time. Anyone know if this is the case?

At my interviews in September they said the rejections wouldn't come until March which is also when the majority of acceptances will be given. But take that with a grain of salt because they are still figuring out how they want to do the admissions this year so they could change things as they go.

This is also a good reminder of who reads the posts on SDN. Be cautious about posting anything (especially if you provide identifying information) that you would not want someone from admissions reading.

(1) Your scores are competitive for UA. Your lack of volunteer/clinical experience would put you at a disadvantage. Luckily, this is the easiest aspect of your application to improve.

(2) Your Phoenix interview does not mean you are ineligible for acceptance at Tucson.

(3) I don't know, in the neighborhood of 30 I think???

(4) Lots

(5) I am at the Tucson campus and there is quite a healthy social scene amongst the med students here. Depends on what you're interested in though.

At my interviews it was also mentioned that rejections (and waitlist) would not come out until March, although I wish I could receive my rejection in Dec so I could retake my MCAT in Jan without feeling like I just wasted another $200.

Forty-eight first-year students were enrolled in 2008 at the phx campus.

I'm really getting anxious to hear from them... Even though we still have 1 month MINIMUM. They're my best shot, I love the school and they are one of my top choices.
