Can someone explain exactly what is the whole rolling admission policy and how did UofA do admission in the past?

God, March 23rd seems too far out! I already got accepted to Tucson and would give my seat there if I get accepted in PHX so all you people wanting to get into Tucson, cross ur fingers for me!

Woah. I have my fingers double tripple crossed for you Baselimam. Good luck. If they want you in tucson it would seem they would want you in phx as well.

Looking back at past posts from last year, some people said that in the past 4 yrs or so they have continued to go into the 50's with the WL. I am thinking within such a time frame, admissions has played around with rolling and non-rolling admissions. Also, the Phx class size was 48 for the first time last year (which is when they saw the greatest WL movement).

Even though the economy is crappy and they have given away more acceptances sooner, I really think that we will make 50 this year. It's not like last year was the only year they saw large movement or anything and every year prior was in the 20's-they consistently appear to make 50 or so in the past.

Also, I think it's interesting that the trend last year seemed that everyone wanted Phx and it was their preference. This year it seems like everyone really wants Tucson right? Or maybe I am just not paying good attention...I wonder how many of those accepted at Tucson are going to accept Phx in the end since I'm guessing a good number of Phx WLers already have a Tucson acceptance...

Someone call up Ann today to get the current WL number for tucson.

Post it and I will do the plot updating.

I think the kind of applicants they are going for this year is unchanged from the previous two years. So the yield rate should be about the same.

I think that at the end of the day if in 07 they made 110 direct offers plus about 53 waitlist offers (163 total). And in 08 they made 110 direct offers and about 59 waitlist offers (169 total), then this year's total will likely be the same (163-169).

The only question is how many more direct offers did they make this year because of intial declines in the early offer groups. My guess it is about 20 (so I think they are at 110 + 20 + 4 waitlisters = 134).

And I think that historically as the number of phx seats go up the number of overlap tucson/phx offers go up. Consequently they are constantly going deeper into the tucson waitlist to fill seats.

We should be able to get a better sense of it once we start plotting up this years WL compared to last year.

Thanks guys for the info. I also think that once PHX waitlist comes out Monday, the following week we will start to see more Tucson WL movement as people with 1st choice as Phx start getting acceptances. Atleast I hope so!

Cuddy I hope that is the street number you used to live on lo l:luck:. Anyway whats your status if you dont mid me asking like are you TUC WL/ACCEP PHX ACCEPTED? Have they already done the Phx acceps? And the 23rd is when they're releasing their wl?

Haha it's my birthday I swear! Still, people always assume I celebrate my bday in a particular manner but no! Haha I got into the habit of using 420 in usernames and stuff. I was accepted at Phx and I'm waitlisted in the high 30's at Tucson. I'm from Tucson, went to UA, and all of my family is here. Plus I love the campus and UMC. So I am really hoping to get in at Tucson. However, I really, really like Phx's curriculum and support over there so I know I will be perfectly happy at Phx as well. I'm grateful for what I have now, but getting in at Tucson would be the perfect ending to this draining process.

Yes, they did acceptances and WL comes out for Phx on the 23rd. That should be an exciting day for many of you guys.

What's your status again?

Im high 20's on the tucson list. I didnt apply to phx. I hope they go past your number you seem like you would be a great classmate.

ah thank you! I'm sure they will get to your WL number so you are good to go! Did you go to UA for undergrad or what were your reasons for not applying to Phx?

Thanks Wannabe for the info I will plot it up tonight and show some trend lines that you can use to get a sense of it.

The PHX situation just seemed really young. Tuc is more established has the campus, UMC, Sarver Heart Center. I really love the CT surgery team over at UMC and I really got used to the OR over there. Ive also been in class with people from the 2008 entering class. Im still doing my undergrad at the U. MCB and if I get in this year a minor in PSIO as well.

Hey hereicomeseals. I was just wondering who do you know in CT surgery? The reason that I ask is because I actually work here.

Ive been able to watch from the anesthesiology area Dr. Bose, Copeland, Amabile and I've seen Dr. Mike in action as well. I got to scrub in an actually assist in a Bose bypass op. I can't remember her name off the top of my head but their was this nurse who almost always worked with Copeland, at least while I was watching, who was always so nice to me. I loved the anesthesiology residents as well. Everyone is just so nice at UMC in my experience.

Here is the new plot.

Data Analysis-
We can model the 2008 waitlist data with two different, least squares fit, trend lines (in blue). The trendlines differ significantly about the end of April when most of the action begins.

The first 08 trendline represents the early days and is relatively flat. It has a slope of about .43 waitlist offers per day. This first trendline is important since it sets up the base value for the second trendline to build off of.

The second 08 trendline represents the end of the selection process and it has a steeper slope of about .875 waitlist offers per day.

The difference in trendline slopes represents the different yield rates and the seasonal difference in when people decide on their final selection.

For the 09 data we want to build similar trend lines and see how they relate to the 08 data. This will give us a good guesstimate of what waitlist number we might hit.

Estimate-
It is of course early days so take this with a grain of salt. It looks like our initial first 09 trendline (in green) is up one waitlist offer from 08. So my current estimate is that we will hit between 54 - 60 this year.

Next-
If someone can get another update Friday afternoon and then again next Wed. that would be great. I think with next Wed's number we will get a better view of how our first 09 trendline is behaving.

This graphing is very interesting. I don't know how relevant it will be, as the admissions process was so different this year as compared to last. But it will be fun to watch. Next years people will probably check it out as well.

Thanks nonlocality! So I just realized how sad I am... everytime I think about May 15th I think about the waitlist and how I should have a good idea of my Tucson chances rather than that I will actually be graduating that day! Hopefully the WL is sitting in a really great spot May 15 and that weekend those of us officially done with undergrad can celebrate ALOT.

I really hope that wl movement this year follows the same trend as previous years. It seems like all the people are on the wl are really cool 😎

Hi all,
So, PHX has already sent their acceptances, right?
And if the wait list comes out on Monday, does that mean the rest of the rejections come out then too?
I'm really bummed I didn't get accepted at Tuscon, I would have loved to go there. But congrats to everyone who did get accepted - best of luck next year!

Does anybody know exactly what UofA thinks of EMTs? I figured it'd be great because I could get great experience, new letters of recommendation, and a good job, which is very important to me with a baby on the way.

It may sound like a no-brainer to some, but I figured I'd ask for some of your thoughts/experiences before I spent a grand on the training this summer. Thanks!

From talking with admissions staff on several occasions, I don't think it really has anything to do with what they think of EMTs, but rather what you think of them. If it will help you get experience, if you will enjoy it, and if it will put you in the types of situations you hope to be in as a doctor (like you are thinking of doing EM), it's probably a good call.

Dr. Leadem told me that they look at your application like a story, and they want to see consistency. So, if you tell them during your interview or in your personal statement that you hope to do Emergency Medicine, but you've never been in the ER, never shadowed in that setting, etc, it's not a very convincing story. But if you volunteer or work there, shadow EM physicians, and/or work as an EMT, you are demonstrating that you are really committed to that field and are doing as much as possible to learn about it and make sure you will be happy there.

Hope this helps! I really think anything you do that gives you more clinical experience is a good thing, especially at U of A.

Thanks for the advice. This actually works pretty well with me, since the best clinical experience I have so far is in the ER at the VA and I will be shadowing an ER doc this summer. Strangely enough, I don't really want to do EM, but being an EMT will help me develop a good consistent story like Dr. Leadem mentioned.

Is someone willing to call ann this afternoon for a waitlist number update?

nonlocality

I would, but I did it two days ago...I hope someone else steps up. I'd be willing to do it once every week, but no more than that. I'm curious, but I don't want to be annoying.

Quick question: Is there anyone below like 40 on the Tucson wl more interested in attending the phx campus?

Thanks for the updated WL number, here is the new plot.

Data Analysis-
For your viewing pleasure, I showed on the x-axis where the 08 and 09 phx waitlists did/will come out. I believe that the 08 phx and the 08 tucson waitlists were released about the same time, so they had some time to work against each other. This year the 09 phx waitlist is coming out about 12 days after the 09 tucson, meaning that their interplay has beed delayed. Since it has been a while since phx stopped with their direct offers there might be some quick initial movement off of the phx waitlist in the first couple of days, to take care of some declines over the past couple of weeks. That might affect the tucson waitlist.

I added some of the 07 tucson waitlist data to the plot. The 07 data was from a rolling admission year but it was over 3 weeks later than 08 and 09. Since their process was 3 weeks later, the first and second 07 trendlines don't diverge until about early may vice late april for 08. I still think we will see our divergence in late april like 08.

The first 07 trendline has a similar slope to the 08 data. The second 07 trendline was estimated from just a few data points but has a smaller slope which reflects the fact that they only got to 53 that year (vice about 59 in 08)

Estimate-
I think we will know beter about our first trendline with next wed's, or perhaps friday's waitlist number (getting some phx interplay). But "Early Days" I am estimating a final waitlist number of from 52-58.

I'm spot #9 on Tucson's list, so I will post when I hear something.

Congratz on the 9 K. I wish that was my number. Also is anyone else overly stressed by this wl process? Waiting is so torturous.

Also: I cant wait till we get a few more data points on the plot so we can get a real good idea of where this wl is heading. It looks too early to predict properly, first glance at the 09 trendline seems to suggest that we will hit only 25 by May 15. Im sure though that we will see a serious slope change hopefully as early as the end of next week but most likely by the end of April.

Move WL! Move! Move! Move!

Are you still going to the other school you received an acceptance to earlier? Or are you set on UA now? How do you feel about Phx if you were to here from them?

I'm struggling with that decision, but I think I'm leaning towards staying in Arizona, for several reasons. First, my husband is in school here, and tuition at the other school is triple that of U of A. Also, we just moved into a new place and I really like it!

As far as Phoenix goes, I would be excited to get in there, but would probably choose Tucson.

so we should all hear back from phx tomorrow?? Anyone know how many they usually wait-list at phx or tucson??

Nope. Maybe 100 or so?

so we should all hear back from phx tomorrow??

Yeah, sometime this week. I wouldn't be too shocked if it wasn't until Friday the 27th though, since that's when Phx campus seems to be sending out most of their emails. See below...

I just called Phoenix and the woman said the WL is coming out the week of March 23rd... feels so far away!!!

Ohh I didn't realize that it was "the week of" the 23rd...They have had a lot of time to think about the WL, I don't see why they would not be ready tomorrow?

I can also make the call on Wednesday to Tucson for the WL update by the way.

It would seem like the best time for the next phone call would be a little after the phx wl comes out. Keisler's happiness will let us know when they hit 9 right?

Anybody feel like bothering Phoenix about the waitlist today? I'm so sure I'm not getting in up there, today I will sign a lease on a new apartment in Tucson and sign up for some classes before I check my email. But I am curious to know. I want to officially close this chapter and start writing next year's.

guys, this is driving me crazy! Here we are, the morning of the 23rd and still nothing from PHX!!! SERIOUSLYYYY?????!!!!!

So I called Tara Cunningham and she said that the list should be out by the end of the day

I had this absolutely odd dream last night/this morning. It was one of those dreams that I thought I was awake in.

I was emailing UA-Phoenix back and forth and I told them that Midwestern was too expensive and they wrote me a letter back saying that in light of my financial status or something the adcom has decided to admit me. COOL!

Although I'm pretty sure I'll be getting the same thing I got from Tucson....

Yep, me too. Is anybody out there on the waitlist? Am I mistaken or did they actually say they weren't going to number it? If that's the case I'm glad I got rejected and can focus on working hard for my application next year. I think I'd rather wait another year and get in in 2010 than go through another 4 months of uncertain hell before starting this year.

still nothing.. I'm refreshing every 5 seconds. I got rejected from Tucson, so I'm not expecting much..
