University of Illinois-CVM - Application C/O 2022

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been perusing the vet med website and landed on the club tab earlier today. Do you guys recommend joining clubs? How many is too many? What are some that you recommend?? I definitely want to join something and have a little fun in school! LOL

I want to join like....all the things...

iirc they deferred like 20 people from 2020???)

They were originally 180, then 5 were lost to 21 over the course of the year, and 1 has not returned. So I would not be surprised if that was the case. But I haven't heard of anyone in particular who did defer.

Soooooo...... I'm in a lot. Lol. But more active in some than others. Super active in Animal Welfare, OTS, Wildlife, and AAEP. Then I dabble in PMC, WDA, VSOP, and three others I can't remember.

With that being said, I arguably do too much. I have three jobs (one of which is on call and I've never been called in) and am regularly here 8-12 hours a day (including weekend days).

Do what you can handle. Don't be pressured to do any more than that.

Could’ve been mixing up schools but know one school who over accepted had 20 people defer to the class below to get them to a more reasonable number to start with. I thought it had been Illinois but I guess not

Also adding on that these clubs aren't free to join (I think VSOP might be the only free one, but it's not so much a club as it is a group of people who volunteer in the community). If you join every single one, you're looking at like $100-150. Sometimes that helps people reign it in a bit, lol. The club dues go towards food for lunch lectures, travel costs for speakers, etc.

How did you make Ski quote my words? Lol

Hey does anyone know if we will be getting some kind of welcome package/info any time soon by mail? I want to call but I'm sure many other people called already so please let me know if you asked.

Historically there has been an info packet mailed! I think I got mine mid-May, but things may have changed since then.

@batsenecal and I might be able to give you some ideas of things to start getting if you're really antsy 😛

Really though, looking back, I feel like the only things I needed first year (other than all the supplies you need to buy from ISCAVMA) was business casual clothing for clinics. You really only need the two anatomy books (I still have a plastic wrapped physio book from first year...). You could start looking into stethoscopes too? Lots of options for different budgets. Other than those things, most people tend to overprep/overbuy for vet school it seems. Lots of exiting 4th years trying to get rid of all the stuff they never needed right now in our school's free/for sale group.

At interviews we were told there were stethoscope vendors during orientation to take orders and such. Do you (or @batsenecal) happen to know if they have ones you can try out and see what you like or nah?

And I saw the scavma list online from last years incoming class info and laughed at a $4 hoof pick. You can get two nice ones with brushes for the same price from a tack store 🤣
But like for the overboots it has on there, how necessary are those to buy if I already have a pair of knee-high nice muck boots that I wear to the barn?

iirc, I asked a current student at the time how much the vendor sold for and managed to get mine a bit cheaper outside of that particular sale (tldr: Idk, I didn't go see the vendor). Most people get the cardio III, but I think there's a IV out now so they may be pushing that one. No idea. I have the III and I like it just fine.

If you already have boots, you can definitely use those! It is best if they are low tread. It will save you a surprising amount of time since you have to clean them thoroughly after every first year palpation (aka weekly for 16 weeks), on clinics, etc. If they aren't low tread, you won't get yelled at, you just have put in more effort to keep them clean. More of a pain on clinics than during palpation. Some people like to have multiples esp. if they are large animal oriented so they can leave a pair in their locker for school and a pair in the car for going to the dairy/whatever on the weekends. Totally up to you though. Getting a 2nd pair of coveralls is definitely a good idea...I didn't need them 1st/2nd year but definitely did for my farm block 4th year. You could always try to borrow them like I did though! If you're a LA person it's a good investment.

I still haven't used the hoof pick I bought from ISCAVMA, but I have all of my equine blocks in a row coming up so I'm sure I'll use it them (and promptly sell it after). You need the instrument pack (Might find it cheaper online, might not) but after 2nd year you won't ever need them again. They're not quality instruments so it's not like you'd save them for a lac-pack you could use out in practice or anything. I might try to sell mine. Dissection instruments are provided in the anatomy lab, the pack you buy is for skills practice on clinics (dead stuff). The penlight they sold my year...every single person's stopped working within days of us starting clinics 🙄, hopefully they chose a different penlight after that. Honestly I have yet to use a penlight though. If you are testing cranial nerves, you'll reach for the transilluminator or your cell phone. Penlights are easier to have in your pocket, but unless you shell out $$$ for a legit one, they all seem to die/never get bright enough.

If you don't need to buy scrubs through ISCAVMA, don't bother. They aren't required and if they are the same that I was sold, just plain ceil blue with no good pockets. If you can get a few junky pairs for anatomy from Walmart for cheaper, do that.

Also, anyone hmu if you want a old school i-clicker for super cheap! It's been with me for 8 years now and we've bonded through the terrible times we've endured together, but he deserves to live on through an eager new student.

ETA: Percussion hammer is also unnecessary (still haven't used mine). If you can find the same instruments for less $, go for it.

Thank youuuuuuuuuuuu😍
And yeah my boots are definitely low tread and easy to clean, they’re what I wear to the barn when I ride to tromp through the pastures to grab a horse
Are the inseams of the coveralls they sell decently long? I have massively long legs and just finding regular pants to fit them is a bit more difficult (lol 35” inseam ftw)
And I’ve heard buying a penlight isn’t super advised because most people use their phone (and apparently works well as a hammer too hahaha)
For scrubs, I have a couple junky pairs I got from my old job that I saved specifically for anatomy so i should be good on those and then I can toss them
I miiiiight still have my i clicker from undergrad still, but if I don’t I’ll definitely hit you up (I am currently too lazy to go check my backpack because it’s far away and high up)

You might have issues with length, then. These coveralls shrink horribly despite you trying to avoid it (both waist width and leg length) and are short for most people above 5'5 or so. I'm 5'7 and mine hit above my ankle after 3 years of use/washing. You might be able to find better fitting/cheaper coveralls online. The sizing of the brand ISCAVMA uses is surprisingly limited and you're going to want to be decently comfortable. The shorter length will be hidden by your boots, but if you have any doubt about the waist size, size up if you can or get a pair elsewhere if you worry about the XL not fitting well. Better to be too loose than you damaging your internal organs when you bend over (which is what I did for my two weeks on farms, lol).

Or you could try a men's pair if the length is better. There's no obvious difference between men's and women's as far as I can tell when they're on people.

If you're into neuro, you could probably get use out of a Welch Allyn penlight but yeah other than that don't bother, at least not just for clinics as a student. Most of the stuff you'd want to use on clinics will either get beat up or lost/stolen so I tend to just use any exam supplies the service has instead of using my own. Purina (I think) has a lunch lecture every year where they hand out crappy penlights. Also AVMA comes and gives out bandage scissors every year. Scoop those up. Bandage scissors are gold. Highly recommend scratching your name into those because your unprepared classmates will definitely borrow those and 'forget' to give them back if you don't hound them. Or people will know you always have a pair and grab them out of your white coat when you're not there to 'borrow' and 'forget' to give back. I've already had clinicians walk off with my stuff that is clearly labeled too so it happens, whether it's truly accidental or not. This includes your stethoscope. People don't always get super bent out of shape over bandage scissors, slip leads, etc, but stethoscopes get misplaced/'borrowed' too and you'll see posts about those in the school groups. Get a cute dog tag at Petsmart with your name/number to hook onto you stethoscope to help prevent that/help you keep track of yours since most girls opt for the same stethoscope color combos lol.

tldr: don't bother buying yourself high quality anything for clinics. A nice grad present would be high quality stuff +/- engraving.

I’ll def look into either a different brand or the men’s ones since I’m 5’9 haha

I think I stopped getting notifications for this thread after I missed one in the midst of a WW game. So I just wanted to pop in say you can shoot me questions as well 🙂

One thing I do have to say- my scrubs have actually fared quite well through anatomy and don't smell bad, so I will not need to toss them. But I did wash them every other week or so. I've also kind of completely stopped wearing scrubs recently because I'm too lazy to change, but I'm careful in lab and make sure not to lean against anything gross.

RE: ISCAVMA packages.... don't order scrubs. Don't order boots if you have a pair (or buy mine from me, because they don't fit on my android legs :hilarious:). Go buy a hoofpick off amazon. Really the only super important thing is the surgical pack, in my opinion... I looked online but had a hard time finding anything that for sure had all the items that we needed.

Soooooo what brand of coveralls does everyone recommend?? I have a winter pair of the carhart ones but I def need something for the warmer months so I'm not sweating up a storm. I have a pair of muck boots but they're not low tread so I guess I should buy low tread. Any recommendations for that? Are any type of scrubs ok?? I have so many pairs from work that I can use in lab and what not. Or do they have to be that specific blue color. Also during clinics, business casual attire, what are peoples preference for comfort level in the clothes they decide to wear.

I also still need to figure out my RV series and it's driving me up a wall at the moment.

Hey does anyone know if we will be getting some kind of welcome package/info any time soon by mail? I want to call but I'm sure many other people called already so please let me know if you asked.

I have been dying to get a packet in the mail so I can start prepping! It's driving me up a wall. I'm so anxious to get everything started.

Wear whatever scrubs you want in anatomy lab. In the clinics, you need to make sure there aren't any other clinic brands/name on them.

Also during clinics, business casual attire, what are peoples preference for comfort level in the clothes they decide to wear.

As long as you're business appropriate, go with whatever makes you comfortable. I actually find heels comfortable, so I have worn them on clinics. But girls who are not comfortable in them don't. They wear nice flats instead. It's just common sense stuff; don't over think it.

Y'all will get your info, don't worry. We're finishing up finals on the 11th, so I imagine you'll start receiving stuff after that point.

I’m def one of those people who isn’t comfortable in heels. My ankles roll outwards and it is not a good time. Yay for weak ankles!

And as for getting info,

tbh, as a first year you are potentially on farms from October-December and as a second year January-March. There's a chance you'll be on farms in the summer as a 4th year but you may be fine to keep your winter pair, esp. if you end up having farms when it's cold out. First year palpations are indoors, so not all that uncomfortable (plus you only palpate from the first week-March). Entirely up to you of course. If you plan on doing extracurricular LA-related stuff you may want a lighter pair.

There are no real 'rules' on what your boots can be other than low tread. I think at some point someone told us they have to be pulled over shoes (instead of regular boots) but it really isn't a huge deal.

As for clinics/business casual, there's a huge variety. Most often women opt for pants/flats (men are almost always in a dress shirt/tie, save for scrub-wearing services). some girls wear dresses + tights, wedge heels/booties, etc. It really depends on your comfort level and the demands of the service you're on (which you will learn as a 1st/2nd year).

Really, some nice tops, cardigans/sweaters, and like 2 pairs of black pants and dress khakis would pull you through your entire clinical year. Looooots of people sell used clothes in the school's fb group, especially around this time of year when everyone is moving. Also recommend ThredUp (hmu if you want to order stuff through them because I have a referral code for $10 off). I got like 10 nice sweaters, cardigans, and dressy tanks for $70ish on that site!

I bought the coveralls from the ISCAVMA sale and they've been fine for me so far. You WILL need green ones for fouth year, if the rumors ive heard are correct

I wouldn't personally go out and buy new muck boots just for school, but it's up to you. How much time do you've want to use scrubbing your boots?

Bats answered the scrub thing; so I'll skip that

For clinics, I wore khakis or slacks with usually a nice sweater, since it was winter. Occasionally I'd go blouses or polos depending on the rotation. It's not super strict, but they do want you to look nice. I've seen some girls wear dresses, but I'm not sure how practical that really was for them.

Ohhhhhh ok so maybe I'll just pick up a lighter pair of coveralls and then keep my winter one. I can get cold pretty quickly sometimes, it's a hit or miss for me. lol I do need to get a few more nice pairs of dress pants and I have a fair amount of nice shirts for sure but I need the pants. Don't think my black leggings will count anymore (Been able to sneak by for so long with those). Def interested in thread up! I'll have to check them out!! 🙂 I'd love that referral code! 😉 I've also liked a bunch of stuff on the fb page but I don't see a point in buying anything yet until I move down since I'm still in Chicago for a few more months. I'm super excited for all of this to start to be honest!! 😀

How is the sizing from the coveralls from the ISCAVMA sale? I'm such a odd size because I'm so short, I usually have a hard time with length and then how it fits around the waist. I'll have to keep that in mind, I'd assume they'd tell us if we need the green ones.

I was just curious if they had a specific dress code for the clinics or if it was just kind of whatever as long as it was business casual. 🙂

My coveralls fit okay. My mom convinced me to order a size up in case I needed to wear 27893 layers under them, so they're a little wide when I'm not wearing a million layers. But really, I don't think anyone notices. They're not a fashion statement haha.

I'm pretty tall and long-legged, so I'm not sure I can speak for the sizing on shorter legs.

Can't decide whether to live at The Village or in a house. Part of me wants to live in the Village cause it's more nicely furnished and I would have my own bathroom. But I've heard a decent amount of bad things about it, so now I'm kind of leaning towards a house, but I'd have to share a bathroom. Idk what to do and I could def use some advice

I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED

What bad stuff have you heard about it? I really haven't had any bad incidents while living here. As I mentioned a few pages back somewhere, we have had a few mice, but they were dealt with promptly as soon as we asked maintenance to do something about it. Our upstairs neighbors are a little loud sometimes, but we called on them at the beginning of the year when they were REALLY bad and they've definitely settled down now. It doesn't bother me anymore, and I tend to be kind of "crabby" about noise haha. The train also does run directly behind a lot of the apartments, but it never once has woken me, and doesn't even bother me during the day. Just a little obnoxious if you're outside when the train suddenly blows through.

I live in a three-bedroom and it's been great. Picked my roommates last year and we all get along really well. Never had an issue with either of them. We had several pets in the apartment at once, including two large dogs, and it's certainly doable as long as your dogs are well behaved.

If you plan on bringing an animal, they do have a pet fee, and they do also have breed restrictions (no bully breeds, g-sheps, Airedales, chows, rotts, dobies, etc). But otherwise they're pretty pet friendly.

But I've heard a decent amount of bad things about it, so now I'm kind of leaning towards a house, but I'd have to share a bathroom. Idk what to do and I could def use some advice

Didn't live in the Village (lived in the Place), but I love living in a house. I live in a 6 bedroom, 3 bath farmhouse in Tolono (5 rooms open for the fall, btws, new '22ers) and haven't had any major issues. Sharing a bathroom with others isn't terrible as long as you guys make it work. I take showers at random times and am usually the first person awake, so I haven't had conflicts in that regard.

But I 10/10 recommend living in a house. Love it.

Did they give you any class stats by chance?
I am currently on the waitlist now and today I had my file review with Dr. Foreman. If you haven't done that I really recommend it. Although he didn't tell me where I am on the list, he hinted that I'm pretty far down- so he will probably do that with you as well. He also pretty much told me everything I need to fix and even told me what the interviewers wrote about me...so I definitely recommend it!

How did you go about finding roommates? I know they wait a while to send information but I'd love to start connecting with roommates as soon as possible and then choosing an apartment/house. Do they create a facebook group or anything?

Yeah, they'll create a Facebook group. A second year posted in it about wanting roommates and she and I sounded like we would get along well, so I hit her up and she showed me around. I liked her so I signed a lease with the Village to live with her

The uiuc co 2022 has a Facebook page (@batsenecal posted it a couple weeks ago on here) that you could potentially find first year roommates on and there’s a couple people from other classes that reply and post their houses that they’re looking to fill a room in as well.
