University of Minnesota c/o 2023 Applicants

Just FYI, most "on campus" housing options are going to be on the Minneapolis campus whereas the vet school is on the St Paul campus. Not that it's that far and there are inter campus buses but something to be aware of.

There is that graduate/professional student housing on the south side of the St Paul campus too though, one of my classmates/friends (he'd be annoyed if he saw I said he's my friend but I can guarantee he doesn't go on SDN) lives in that. An apartment has always seemed much cozier than those places, though. It felt like a glorified dorm.

Is an iPad necessary? I feel like I see so many students talking about it like it’s the best thing ever. I have a surface I bought 3 years ago and really never used (my crappy luck got me purchasing the only surface model that blacks out and the Microsoft store basically said tough luck) that I was gonna bring but I feel it’s not the same.

Would I be able to do fine without an iPad and just a MacBook 😳. If it’ll make my life a lot easier in lectures than I would consider getting an iPad but I really don’t want to if I don’t have to.
I prefer my iPad because I need to be able to handwrite on powerpoints. Typing doesn’t help me retain anything. I also am not fast enough at typing. Unless the school specifically requires an iPad (Ohio State does) you definitely don’t NEED one. It also depends on how you take notes best. If you’re a typer, is go with a regular laptop of some sort. If you’re a writer like I am, a tablet/iPad or a 2 in 1. I went iPad over a different brand tablet because I KNOW how to use ios whereas I haven’t had any device that has ran windows in 11 years.
Also I have a bad back so I need something to be ultralightweight like an iPad/tablet because a laptop on my back is just too heavy for me.

I also really like the notability app for note taking, for anyone who reads this and is getting an iPad.

An IPad isn't necessary at all. A lot of my classmates have what I assume are macbooks (apple laptops. I've never owned one so I have no idea what models people have).
I'd get/use/bring whatever you think will work best for you. Some people prefer to be able to handwrite notes on a tablet (like Skiotter said), and some people do just fine being able to type. (I have terrible handwriting, so I type notes in class and handwrite notes/charts to study later).

I am currently number 84 on the University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine Out-of-State waitlist. What are my chances of being accepted?

This may just be a sign of my excitement to a literally stupid level, but I want to know/can't remember if the first year classroom has outlets at every seat. Do they?

I know last year it went at least to 25, but I don't know how much further it went after that. It's certainly not impossible, and every year is different. If I were you I'd plan/proceed as if you aren't going to get in, but have a plan for if you do. Decide your limits (will you be willing/able to move if you only have a week's notice, etc) and do a file review if you plan to apply again.

Has anyone checked in to see if the OOS waitlist moved at all? I know in the email they said we could check in at anytime but I was unsure if that meant now or after April 15th.

Last year the email said you could check in anytime after the 15th. No movement happens until then

I am currently trying to decide between Wisconsin and Minnesota, Wisconsin being my in-state. I love MN and everything it has to offer, however their OOS tuition is SO high. I guess I am just wondering why it is this high and how you all are justifying paying the extra money?

I’m not justifying it. MN is my IS but I still chose Mizzou since I can get IS tuition and cost of living is lower in MO vs twin cities. Sucks to leave MN but all accredited schools will give a great education so it 100% comes down to money for me.

Go to your in-state.

I called last week and she said "there are been significant movement" but she can't say how many seats or anything until the 15th.

Back when I was applying Wisconsin was one of the cheapest OOS schools and it would have been cheaper for me to go there than MN IS. Had I made it off the WI waitlist I would have had a tough choice to make (though ultimately IS MN would have been best since shortly after WI significantly upped their OOS tuition). UMN accepts a large percentage of OOS students (45 OOS vs 57 IS my year) so I assume people are coming to MN OOS due to either not getting into their IS, not having an IS, only getting into other more expensive options, or being independently wealthy. I could barely justify attending MN as an in state student so I can't honestly recommend anyone choosing it over any cheaper options.

Sorry if this has been discussed earlier, but does MN overaccept its OOS spots initially?

OOS waitlists #77! UMN is my top pick. I got will accept an OOS position at Illinois and wait to hear from UMN in the meantime.

I don’t remember this being mentioned during the info session. It also wasn’t mentioned in the acceptance email, so I would guess they don’t over-accept like some schools do.

Did you receive any confirmation? Thank you!
I got an email from them after I sent my deposit in confirming I had done so, and got an additional email today mentioning that my admissions status was changed from provisional to full since I've sent in my last semester's transcript. Is this what you were looking for?

Yes, thanks! I received my confirmation from them today.

are you guys able to get Microsoft office through the school? I know in my undergrad it was offered bc we're students.

That's so exciting!!! I won't move out probably until midsummer, but definitely before the 4th of July. Fireworks over the lakes are so pretty there. You'll have to keep us updated/share any tips for moving across the country.
My move officially starts in two weeks! I’m so excited :soexcited:

I'm so jealous!! I just started the apartment search but probably won't be out there until a week or so before GOALE. I also second the cross country tips since I'll be moving from New York!

I will also add, in the off chance that this applies to anyone, that if you qualify for military benefits they help a lot! Especially the GI Bill. My mom saved hers for me and MN is actually one of the few schools that will do a non-resident tuition waiver for OOS students using the GI Bill. Depending on how long you/they served dictates how much the GI bill will cover (ex 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%). We found that since my mom served long enough it covers up to like $29,000 per year in tuition for any OOS University, but if you receive IS tuition it covers 100%. So with the non-resident tuition waiver it's classified as IS tuition so mine is fully covered. But even if not receiving the GI Bill, if a parent or spouse was/is military there are other potential financial benefits like monthly living stipend, books, etc so it's worth looking into.

For the people who already found places to live or current students, how far do you guys live from campus. All the places I’ve been looking at are around a 15 min drive away from the St.Paul campus😳. Not sure if I’m gonna end up regretting not getting something that’s like five min away but I can’t seem to find anything that close.

I live about 13 mins from campus without traffic, and my commute is usually 20-25 minutes with traffic. It really isn't that bad. Traffic is pretty much always moving even if it's slower, and I give myself plenty of leeway time so I don't have to worry about running late. I may just be comparing to when I had an hour+ commute to work every day, but 15 minutes is extremely doable.
If you're concerned about it there may be closer places on the housing spreadsheet that should be on the class facebook page?

Thanks for your reply! I think I will end up renting an apartment that is about 15 minutes away from campus. Since I lived in a student housing apartment throughout undergrad I was looking to live in a similar place for grad school (especially one with a garage due to the immense amount of snow 😛)

My house is about 15-20 minutes away. It's totally fine. Even in the snow in my Prius.

Has anyone started to look for roommates yet? I found an apartment complex that I'm in love with but nobody's really started posting yet on the Facebook page and I don't know if I'm ~ready~ to be the one to kick it off

I’m waiting for them to pull me off the waitlist lol (I’m #6 on oos) and would love to find a roommate ASAP 🙂

Go for it! I'm sure your future classmates are thinking something similar

Does anyone know when they start pulling people off the waitlist?

Last year it began right after the acceptance deadline. I can't remember if it was the same day or the day after
And when they pull they give you like 48 hours or something?

It's longer than that. I remember the first round being given about a week; I think they had until April 24th to accept? Then the second round began.
I just went back and checked my acceptance email; it was sent May 15th and I had until 8am May 21st. They called me the day before but I was at work, so they didn't send it until after I returned that call.

Got it. I’m just afraid bc I’m out of the country until April 16 and land @ 6am pst so hopefully they’ll leave a voicemail lol
