I did SMDEP at UNMC last year and loved it I really aspire to go there but I was wondering what are the chances for an OOS student who is hispanic to get in. I have a 3.3science GPA 3.4 overall I will be taking my MCAT this coming April to submit my app for UNMC in June.

UNMC has a pretty strong IS bias. I want to say it's close to 90%. That said, your URM status may help. At least there is no essay for the secondary! 🙂

What are your extracurriculars? The GPA isn't too impressive, especially considering UNMC's huge preference for IS applicants

some of them are volunteering in the ER as a patient care liason, physics lab assistant, my two research projects (and going), playing in my schools orchestra and jazz band(as lead trombonist), being part of this non-profit organization called SEO, track and field athlete, soccer club member

doesn't look too bad. it will help your app, but depends on your total number of hours too. because you're going to need quite a bit to make up for the OOS and GPA. why do you want nebraska? because you might have to explain that. any ties to nebraska?

also, any shadowing?

Wait... I went to SMDEP at UNMC last summer as well (2013). I'm sure we know each other. My identifying feature would be the blonde guy who sang in the trio of guys in the talent show. Taller, from Nebraska. Do I sound familiar? Clearly I don't want to throw out names, but I think it's awesome you want to go to UNMC!

As for what your odds are. From what they told us at the program last summer: EVERY PARTICIPATING STUDENT IN SMDEP AT UNMC WILL GET AN INTERVIEW IF YOU APPLY. So, there's an in already. The GPA may not be the greatest, but depending on your situation and what not, they will look at that in a different light (possibly). Having said that, I have no idea of what the statistics are of out-of-staters getting in. It is very in-state heavy, as UNMC is viewed as a sort of recycling university (to me anyway). They take Nebraska kids in, and they get spit out right back in to Nebraska to (hopefully) better medical care around the state.

I love UNMC, and I will be applying early decision there next fall! If you'd like, you can message me on here or Facebook! I know a lot of us from the program are friends on there, so just message me if you have the desire.

Good luck with everything!

did the SMDEP overlap much with the SURP (summer undergraduate research program) much? I was in the SURP program last year doing pancreatic cancer research in the eppley cancer center (currently the fred and pamela buffett cancer center)

will PM both of you my facebook btw.

I don't believe it did! We were in Sorrell for the majority of the time, but we did stay at Scott Residence Hall at UNO. I don't know where they house the SURP students. The dental students would also go to the Lincoln campus on Friday's when we would do clinical experience.

oh ok, i dont think we would have overlapped then. i was pretty much only in eppley. and i am an omaha native so i just stayed at home

Wait, hold up, how do you know that everyone who participated in SMDEP at UNMC gets an interview just for applying????

When we were in lecture, Dr. Hill (Associate Dean of Admissions) came in and talked to us. He made the announcement that everyone who participated in SMDEP at UNMC and applied to UNMC for Medical/Dental School would receive an interview. I am already (basically) guaranteed an interview there because of my in-state residence; however, the out-of-staters were certainly excited.

Remember, however, that UNMC is still extremely in-state oriented. While receiving an interview from them will increase your chances, I don't believe it will do so drastically.

Okay I see!! Thanks for the speedy response.

Ohhhhh I see. Thanks for the speedy response. I wasn't too worried about getting an interview at Nebraska since I am also an in-state resident I was just curious.
