UPenn c/o 2018 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not to be a negative nancy, but are rejections sent out periodically like interviews are? Or do they tend to go out later all at once?

Congrats on the acceptances!!!

Does anyone know how many applicants Penn had this year and/or how many more invites will go out?

I think they're really early in the process, only a few rounds interviewed so far. Keep in mind that a) they interview well into March and b) are NOTORIOUS for keeping people waiting because they're Penn. But plenty of people that have been made to wait are there now. As for me, I'm just focusing on the opportunities in front of me 😀

I'm posting this in both the Davis and the penn threads because I am hoping to get feedback from students at both schools:

Ok so now that I've been accepted into both it's UPenn vs UC Davis for me... I am completely torn since I love both programs. I'm OOS for both but Penn will turn out to be about 100k more over 4 years. Penn is ideal for my SO since we are from NJ and it would be nice to stay close of friends and family. Davis would be an adventure and I fell in love with the program and the town while I was there! Does anyone have any advice that will help make my decision easier? Any current Penn students??

I will tell you what veterinarians have told me.
If you have a choice between schools:
1. go somewhere you will love to live for four years
2. if there is a big difference in cost go where it will be less expensive for you because overall any school you go to will have a great program and you are going to have a big debt by the time you get out. Anyway you can limit that helps you.
3. look at the caseload of the teaching hospitals. You want to go somewhere that has a high volume because you will be learning by observing and doing. The more cases that are seen, the more you will learn.

Hope this helps.

Keep in mind that the students/professors you get to know in vet school become your colleagues. If you are planning on moving back to NJ after graduation then you might have better connections if you go to Penn. Just some food for thought, a vet I worked for told me that and it was something I hadn't thought of.

I'm wondering where you found this information. On their website chart UPenn adds up a lot of other fees that UC Davis doesn't mention (including health insurance, which you might already have), as well as other miscellaneous fees under the 'non-resident budget,' which might be why you claim it will end up costing $100,000 more to attend UPenn over four years. A lot depends on where you live, transportation, insurance, and technology you might already own. Be careful about comparing the two tuition rates when they do not include the same items. It seems a bit drastic that it would cost over $100,000 to attend UPenn than UC Davis.

Establishing CA residency means you are unable to visit home more than a certain amount of days a year. Just something to keep in mind with family on the east coast.

Well I am comparing the overall budget for each school that they give us which seems to include for both tuition, housing, food, books, etc. aka overall cost or amount you are able to take a loan for. Davis does include health insurance. Both are supposed to include all costs but I will have to compare them side by side again to make sure.
Davis is as follows:
1) ~ 68k
2) 68 - 12 (in state) = 56k
3) 56k
4) 56 + 4 = 60k
Total = ~240k

Penn:
1) 78k
2)78k
3) 78k
4) 85k <-- it's either 3rd or 4th yr that is 85 I forget
Total = 319k

319 - 240 = 79k <---WAH!!! ;(
Also when I was there for my Davis interview, they told us that almost all students like over 90 percent I think qualify for an additional 7k grant each year...
7 x 4 = 28k

79 + 28 = 107k <--- Bigger WAH!!

Sooo yeah... Even without the grant it's still 80 grand cheaper for me to go to Davis. I really hope this isn't the case and penn includes some weird fees that I will not have to incur or that I've made a math error somewhere... Please let me know if you find any!! Perhaps I will call penn and ask them to break down their "miscellaneous fees"...

However rational it may be cost wise though, I can't help but want to come to penn! I loved it there.

Honestly, I would say go the cheapest route you can go. I know you have a few more acceptances besides Davis and Upenn. I don't know what kind of financial situation you are in, but 300k (Penn's TUITION alone) will leave you scrambling after graduation. That's easily 500k after interest. Just...make sure you think about this decision carefully.

Yeah I'm not in the kind of financial situation where 300k is pocket change. 🙂 Lol yeah ironic you should post because I just got my ohio acceptance today too and now I'm throwing that in the mix. I also loved it there and it is definitely another cheaper option. Gah such a big decision to make! I didn't think I would have this hard of a time deciding - hell, I never dreamt I'd have this many options!

I narrowed my choice down to Ohio State and UPenn and ended up choosing Penn for many reasons. The primary reason was NBC and its caseload, variety of cases, proximity to my home, its beautiful and state of the art facilities, and yes its reputation. I also loved the city, was extremely impressed by the curriculum, was in awe of the small animal hospital and its minimally invasive surgery suite among other things, fit in with the students instantly, and so much more. It is an extremely personal decision but if your heart is telling you to go with Penn then you must have reasons behind that. Money, while important, will not make you happy for the next grueling four years of your life. But whatever you decide, CONGRATULATIONS! It is an impressive feat to get into any vet school and everyone should remember that 🙂

Thank you! This was very encouraging =)

Has anyone heard anything from U penn recently?

Does anyone know if they're mostly focusing on IS or OOS right now or if they tend to mix them? I'm IS, and getting a little ansy since Penn's the last school I have to hear from.

After many days thinking it over, I decided to decline my interview. I was accepted to my IS, Cornell. I was totally excited and surprised to be invited to interview at Penn. Its a great program but the difference in tuition makes a big difference financially. I hope someone on here gets the spot. - Good Luck!!

Sorry to hear I won't be meeting you, but best of luck at Cornell!

Finalizing Spring semester.... For UPenn pre-reqs it says 3 biology courses... I did gen bio 1&2, and a genetics course....does that count as 3? Or do I need a gen bio 3? Please help! 🙂

According to the PennVet website:

The biology requirements may be met by taking a six semester credit course in general biology, which includes the biology of plants and animals. This may be followed by a course of not less than three semester credits in embryology or comparative anatomy of the vertebrates. An alternative method of completing the biology requirements is to take separate courses in vertebrate zoology, genetics, and embryology or comparative anatomy.

9 semester credits, (3 courses) at least one of which must cover the basic principles of genetics

Haven't heard from Penn yet, only other schools. I'll have to wait and see 🙂

Off to interview this week at Penn... Just wanted to wish a super big GOOD LUCK to everyone else going this week too, and for all those still waiting to hear.... I had friends hear all the way up through March last year, and even some get accepted in August (!) off of the wait-list. Also CONGRATS to everyone else who received their acceptance so far! 🙂

Hey guys, Need some advice.

In March I'm going on a once in lifetime trip to Italy with my BF's Family. Its mid March - I looked back in the UPenn c/o 2017 thread and looks like interviews ended in March. Still haven't heard anything from Penn even though its my IS.

So basically the question is since they only offer one interview date should I e-mail Admissions and let them know I'll be out of the country those dates just as a heads up? I mean they really can't expect you to leave 3 entire months open "just in case" you are offered an interview - life happens. Plus basically once in vet school we're all gonna be too busy to travel and after we're all gonna be too poor to travel.

So Opinions greatly appreciated.

I'd be cautious in how you approach it. I know of people who had trips planned and had to shell out money to come back early (for Penn and other schools). From reading other people's comments and since most schools post this info on their websites, I would imagine they'd expect you to plan accordingly, but who knows. Definitely feel free to contact them and find out.

And it's definitely still possible to travel in vet school. Various clubs send groups abroad and many people do internships/externships abroad. I also have many classmates that travel over breaks in the first couple years.

Does anyone know what to wear if you want to stick around for the student happy hour after the day of interviews and events are over?? I'm assuming I should bring a change of clothes, so I don't look silly in my interview outfit. Unless it's fine to wear that!

Many wear their interview outfit. I wore mine both years. But if you want to change, you can wear whatever you want. There are usually dogs at happy hour, so changing isn't a bad idea.

Something like this happened with me for Ohio, and like 2 days after I let them know, I got a rejection letter. Just be careful. I said something like "I know I have yet to be offered an interview, but wanted to let you know that I won't be available these days for an interview. Thank you for your consideration in allowing me to interview a different day if I am privileged to be offered one......."

Have any other accepted students gotten any mail/email from penn?I got my acceptance call a week ago and haven't gotten anything yet...

Got my interview invite today- IS/ Equine =) Other large animal applicants- don't give up hope, by the email it sounded like there were a lot more LA interviewees than they could cram into one day. Good luck to everyone!!

Also OOS large animal focus and got my interview invite today 🙂

I'm LA (equine) OOS, nothing yet for me!! 🙁

For the large animal / NBC interview and tour, do people usually wear interview attire as they're walking around, and then just change their shoes when they get inside for interviews?

I wore my short riding boots (polished) with my interview suit and stayed like that for my interview as well. It really depends on what you prefer. I saw people walk around in muck boots, cleaned of course, and then change into interview shoes but plenty of others that didn't change. As long as you look presentable and sensible for the places you will be walking you will be fine! Good luck 🙂
