VMRCVM Applicants c/o 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Quick question..if it says from the email that we should arrive 45 minutes prior to our interview time, and my check-in time is 8 am on Friday the 25, do I have to arrive at 8 am or 7:15? Thanks!!!

If I remember correctly you need to be there 45 min early to the check in time. The check in is at the vet school, but your group will be taken to another building for the interviews. They need y'all there early/on time cuz if you miss the bus it will screw up everything else.

Any one here anything today? I'm hoping to hear about more interviews today!

Not yet, but I plan on checking my mailbox every hour at least!

Has anyone received a rejection email on the same day the invites were sent out? Just curious because I havent received anything, wanted to know if anyone was in the same boat as me.

It looks like in the past they send out both interview invites and some rejections at this time unless you're on the interview waitlist.

Here's the page that I'm drawing this from:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=852913&page=5

But I'm in the same boat as you- I've heard nothing yet, but I emailed their office asking if they were done sending invites, so I'll post it if I hear anything. Invites might come out today as well, as per an email that said they were scheduled to be emailed last Friday OR today, so I'm still holding out a little hope.

yup same boat.... fingers crossed!

Can a current student or someone who has interviewed before tell me what the dress code is for the dinner? I'd rather be overdressed then under, but it's still awkward if you show up in a suit and everyone else is wearing jeans.

Oh no! I'm so sorry! Are you still waiting on any other schools?

Five minutes after getting this rejection i got an interview offer from Tufts! Still waiting on Michigan.

I've never experienced such a range of emotions as I did thirty minutes ago, hahaha.

CONGRATS!!!!!! I'm sure you will kick that interview's butt! So glad you got good news today! 😀

Sorry to hear about those who were rejected. 🙁 I was rejected by my top choice last week, but don't give up hope yet if you haven't heard back from all the schools where you applied.

Has anyone else seen the Facebook group for those interviewing this year?

Welp, got the official rejection email. First rejection, and without even an interview. So I'm out.

Good luck to those of you who get to interview!

Hi everyone! I just called the school asking if they have a VetStay type program where prospectives can stay with current students for the night before the interview. Unfortunately the answer was no. I know this is a weird question, but would any current students be willing to take in a female, food animal medicine person for a night? 🙂 Feel free to PM me. Thanks!!

I'm staying with a current student who also happens to be one of my friends. I'm sure you'll be able to find someone to let you stay over. 🙂

I haven't been invited or rejected yet.... I'm still here in Florida freakish out, I wish they'd make up their minds!! I'm so nervous!!

Its been quiet from Tufts and VMRCVM.....now I really have no idea what is going on

They didn't give us a dinner, wah. 🙁 Everything they did that weekend save for interviews, and everything they did on Prospective Student's Day, was business casual - so that's a safe bet. =)

So sorry for the rejection notices, guys - good luck with your other schools! <3

Got my rejection today. Totally sucks. Last year I was on the wait list to interview and this year they just flat out reject me, even after I made a bunch of improvements to my stats. I guess the applicant pool is just that much more competitive. I shouldn't be too bummed though, I still have 2 interviews coming up!

I've been wondering the same thing. I'll most likely do dress pants, a button down shirt... now my dilemma is shoes!

Yeah I like hopeful's suggestion; can't go wrong with business casual. I'll probably go with a nice pair of khaki pants, a button down, and some nice mocassins. Nothin too fancy.

I still have yet to hear a thing from VMRCVM. I'll give it until Friday, then call, I suppose.

Yes, definitely call if you haven't heard anything. In my experience, it showed them I was seriously interested and got me an interview.

I am in the same boat! Haven't heard a peep! But for now I am just looking at no news as good news... kinda haha I am going to wait a few days to call also.

Me too. Not a word. My nails are almost gone and I am going to end up chewing my fingers off in anticipation! I already got into csu (OMG yay!!) but would love to have the chance to interview with VMRCVM. I applied for the DVm/phd since I want to be a vet researcher & already have a lot of experience in the lab.

Just e-mailed admissions since I still haven't heard anything. Here's hoping for the best, and that my e-mail doesn't just remind them to send me a rejection message!!!!!

ETA: I'm an interview alternate. Tis confirmed. Here's hoping some people drop their spots!!!

Wait listed for an interview 🙁 I need some good news soon!

Same here was just told I am wait listed for interview 🙁

I was told the same over the phone, has anyone received an official email for the interview waitlist?

Judging by the way things have gone this year and what I know of from last year's process, you aren't notified that you're on the waitlist until you get called off of it. I'm assuming once interview weekend rolls around and the interview list is full, they'll let everyone remaining on the waitlist know that they're not calling anyone else off of it.

Edit - Also, if you haven't gotten a rejection, I would assume you're on the waitlist; they don't do like Penn, where they offer interviews/rejections in batches, as far as I know.

Hopefulinva, how should I prepare for my upcoming interview?

Bring an umbrella, because if you're supposed to look nice in Blacksburg, it's going to rain. =)

But seriously - Dr. Pelzer will tell you once you're there, there are no wrong answers to any of the scenarios you'll be given. Since you can't get them wrong, that means you can only get them right - so now it's time to stop worrying about prepping for the scenarios themselves, and focus on honing your regular interview skills. 😉

If you have a Career Center near you (community college, undergraduate institution, etc), I'd schedule a mock-interview with them. It won't be an MMI (even the Career Center associated with Virginia Tech doesn't have mock-MMI's established), but it doesn't matter, because they'll be able to point out unconscious habits you have and knock the "ums" out of your speech and whatnot.

If you don't have that, turn the webcam on on your computer and start talking to yourself. =) It almost doesn't matter what you say, so long as you're focusing on your tenor, not mumbling, not "umming," making eye contact - the basics.

Make sure you're comfortable the day of. Coming from a stress-induced insomniac - try to get a full 8 hours of sleep the night before, and definitely get some breakfast in the morning. One of our professors this past semester suggested washing your hair the morning before an exam, because it's impossible not to feel good with freshly cleaned hair; it may be that extra bit of oomph if you need it. 😉

Waiting for the interview is probably the most stressful part of the day, because you're going to be chatting with people who are going to seem more qualified for the class than you are, but you have to remember that if VMR wasn't interested in you, they wouldn't have asked you to interview. Don't doubt yourself. Or at the very least, don't let the interviewers know you're doubting yourself.

Be confident, be personable, and answer the questions honestly - even if you don't think it's what they want to hear (remember: there are no wrong answers).

If you get done with one scenario and you're convinced you bombed it, take a deep breath, put it behind you, and focus on the next one. That's one of the saving graces of the MMI; you have 8 (6? I can't remember) different instances to prove why you're a good choice for the class of 2017.

Hope that helps. =) Good luck!

Edit - If you're obsessive (as I was) and you're freaking out about preparing for individual scenarios - I'll tell you now, there's no way to do that. There just isn't. But, what you can do, and something I found helpful for other interviews, is answer the following question as thoroughly and as completely as you can. Revisit it, hone it, tweak it - just know that you probably won't get a chance to use it in its entirety in any of your interviews. It will give you a good foundation for answering other questions, though!

Why do you want to be a vet?

Is it realistic to hope to be called off the alternate list for interviews? Or probably not very likely?

Is it realistic to hope to be called off the alternate list for interviews? Or probably not very likely?

I dont think anyone can know...wouldnt it all depend on how many people decline interviews? If I were to hear back from NC State and get in before the interview I would decline mine, so things like that can happen...but sad fact is I think most people wont hear from other schools until after interviews so they will probably accept 🙁 especially IS for tuition reasons.

Keep your head up though! Are you IS or OOS?

Is it realistic to hope to be called off the alternate list for interviews? Or probably not very likely?

I would look at past years threads. From what I remember, quite a few of us got called off the interview wait list last year. Especially if you're OOS, since people are likely to cancel interviews for OOS if they get accepted IS. Of course, this year interviews are 1.5 months earlier than last year, so that could change things a lot.
But it can happen, happened to me🙂 Good luck:luck:

Heh, heh true:laugh:
Or if it's going to be in the 70's in January, you're going to be leaving town for the weekend...see this weekend and me😕

Does anyone know how long the interviews will be? I have an another interview the following day and am trying to book flights!

It'll probably eat up a good chunk of your day. I don't remember the timeline exactly, but I think, between check-in, the interviews, and the tour(s), it should be a solid 5 hours.

If you e-mail Admissions they should be able to give you a better timeframe; I think they send out the schedule a week or so beforehand, but if you gotta book flights I'm sure they'd send it to you asap. 😉

They are having dinner for yall?!!! They didnt have dinner for the 2 years prior to that!!! 😕

Well If they do a better tour of the campus and college it may take longer....but it took almost 3 ish hours I think..but that includes tours.

Yes! We are having a dinner the night before interviews! I plan on attending as long as I'm not missing too much in one of my labs this semester.

They ask different questions every year, and some are kind of off the wall...I did interviews 2 years in a row.....There were some very interesting but random questions (That's all I can say, remember you can't share what they ask you).

Wear comfy but business cloths, and comfy but business shoes. Its probably not the best time to wear the 4 inch heels (you know the Fashion is Pain....type). Look serious business, and you will be walking around a lot..
Take a deep before you go in....

If anyone is really strapped, I have a free couch but I live in Christiansburg which is about 10mins or less away.

Okay between 3 and 5 hours. I guess it varies on your group and the tours. I peaced out of there pretty quick because I had to get somewhere. Can skip the school tour at the end, if you need too.

Does anyone have any idea how many interview invites are given out every year for the dual degree DVM/PhD program?
