Me as an alternate:

In all seriousness, I emailed admissions today to get the details for the whole alternate process. I'll let you guys know when I hear back. They're closed today for the holiday. Congrats to all of you that were accepted!
Love that pic! Also, I see your profile pic is an owl that’s one of my favorite animals! Just wondering if you are interested in wildlife or zoo vet at all? That’s my area of interest.

My focus is small animal emergency, but I have a passion for wildlife. Hard to make a career out of it, but I'd be interested in doing work with wildlife in the side. The picture is from a 3 month full-time zoo internship that I did at my local zoo. It focused on conservation education. I really enjoyed working with and handling the education animals and it definitely solidified my love for birds of prey! The zoo only housed birds of prey that couldn't be released, usually due to previous injury.

The owl is a Barred Owl named Spooky. He was my favorite! He would make this face when you gave him head scratches. He loved it. He would also talk to you if you make owl sounds to him.

That’s awesome! My background was majorly wildlife through rehabilitation. I worked with the game & fish department’s wildlife center with non-releasable wildlife all through undergrad and did two internships with a center in Wisconsin. I’m now a surgery tech with a small animal practice (for the clinic experience). It’s definitely hard to make it a career but I’m going to try and double as a zoo vet. I’ll take all the wildlife I can get!

Working with the center definitely cemented my love for birds of all kinds. I always thought I’d just want to work with mammals. There’s a black crowned night heron named Lunar who was transferred to a local zoo that used to stay with me and he’d talk to me and preen my “feathers”. I don’t think he thought I made a very good bird. I put a picture of him when he decided my couch was much more comfortable than his perch.

That’s so cool that you are into emergency!

He's so cool! He probably was thinking, "silly human! You can't even fly! Here you have to take care of your feathers, like this!" I don't live too far from Cape May and during the migration season, it's an amazing place to find yourself. I'm sure you know that. I just love birding there in the spring! I think I was there for 2-3 days a couple years ago and saw ~150 species.

And I really love emergency. I'm an adrenaline junky, so it's right up my alley!

Just to be sure, alternates don't need to turn in fall transcripts, right?

I’m sending my fall transcripts b/c it’s a repeat of a required course. It’s not taken into consideration in terms of improving your application but it’s good to keep them up to date and show that you’re still trying hard.

I emailed admissions and they said we should send it to make sure we still meet minimum grade requirements, but they no longer accept updates that will change our “spot” on the waitlist

Afternoon, everyone!

Congrats to all that were offered a seat or received alternate status! A few things to note:

Accepts: You do not need to accept or decline our offer prior to April 15, 2018. Fall transcripts are due January 31, 2018 and should be sent electronically to [email protected]. Spring 2018 transcripts are due June 1, 2018. If you attend a Winter term institution, Winter transcripts are due March 31, 2018. No exceptions. We will begin updating the checklist of items required in late April. Until then you will see outstanding transcripts listed. You are welcome to email your admissions counselor to ensure that your Fall/Winter/Spring transcripts are received. For health clearance physical exams, please wait until mid to late-February to receive one as it must be within six months of matriculation.

Alternates: Do not give up hope! We have admitted candidates from the alternate pool each year. The number in the pool changes almost daily. We will not have a more definitive number until after the April 15, 2018 deadline. We typically do not make offers to alternates until mid-May. Please see the note above about when transcripts are due. Although your file will not be updated with the course grades, we still need to ensure that you meet our minimum requirements. Best of luck to you!

Does anyone know approximately how long after paying the deposit for admission, will western send us our school emails and ID#?

Thank you

Can any current students tell me what rotations are generally in your 3rd/4th year? I saw the general groups for rotations in those years but could you give an example of some specific rotations you can do or some specialists you can work with? Thanks!!

Have you already put down your deposit?

What do you do in cases where you're selected as an alternate, but accepted to another school and want to remain on the alternate list? I know you'll obviously have to forfeit your deposit if you change last minute, but does anyone know the protocol? Is it frowned upon? Western is my #1 but I just got accepted at SGU.

That's a tough spot to be in, but congratulations on the acceptance. Does western let's you know ranking in the wait list? I know of numerous students that will be giving up their seat, and I'm sure others will too. I think western is a wonderful place but other students will choose their in-state school. You might just have to fork the money for the acceptance of SGU to secure your spot and then give up your deposit if you end up receiving an acceptance from Western.

I do not think that it is the most ethical thing to do. Nonetheless, it is a sit that you earned and it is up to you to accept it or decline it. If western does not accept you, will you be attending SGU?

Thanks! That's what I figured. From the sounds of it they don't have a ranking and don't tell you if you're accepted until Mid-May through August. I think my tour guide for Western said she was in a similar situation with Ross and ended up getting pulled off the alternate list a week or so before the term started, so I'm definitely very hopeful. Even though its a large amount of money to forfeit hopefully they put it toward a scholarship or something. I'm slightly nervous cause its between moving out-of-country or across-country and the possibility of finding out close to the beginning of the term isn't ideal.

Keep the hope up. Regardless, you'll be attending veterinary school.

Hiya! I'm not sure what they're doing this year, but my acceptance letter last year that was emailed had my WesternU email on it already with instructions on how to set a password and sign in to pay my deposit. If that's not the case this year, I'd suggest asking them when you'll be getting it because it's supposed to be relatively quick, and it'll be useful to have that to start to access the student FB pages. :) Welcome to WesternU!

Just thought I would share this with the people on the waitlist to give you guys an idea of what is going on. I emailed in inquiring about when to send transcripts in if on the alternates list. This was the reply:

"You are correct in that transcripts are not due for alternates until they are offered a seat in the class. If you are offered a seat in the class, you will be required to submit an official transcript as we do not accept unofficial transcripts. Your alternate seat has not been affected because you do not have a transcript due at this time.

Alternates are considered when an accepted student withdraws his or her seat in the class. At this early stage, alternates will not be considered for an open seat until at least mid-May. This is due to the fact that the dean made 218 offers of acceptance. The class is essentially full until the number of accepted students drops below 105 students. At that time, the dean will review all candidates in the alternate pool to select for the open seat(s). We will begin updating student files if they are offered a seat in the class, beginning in mid-May with transcripts received and coursework completed. Until that time, checklist items for alternates will remain unchanged.

Please email me with any further questions.

Sincerely,

Thank you for sharing! I am on the alternate as well
That seems like a lot of people to send extra offers to. Does anyone know if they do this every year?

Hey guys! I am an alternate too,...not sure if I should be happy, or upset lol. I wish when people dropped, then they would let alternates know before May :/

Alternate as well. Mid-May seems like forever away! Hoping the list moves quickly!

I have a question. I’m waitlisted for Western and my spouse is planning on completing his Masters next year. He got into Emory and UCLA.

His top choice is Emory, but if I got into Western he would go to UCLA to be with me, but if I don’t get in we would both go to Atlanta and I would work for a year and re-apply.

The thing is, since I won’t know until at least mid-May and he has to make a decision by April 15th, we were wondering if he could make a deposit at both schools (they are relatively cheap) and then once I know withdraw from one.

Anyone with any input or advice is welcome!

By any chance does anyone have an update on how Karen will be contacting alternates in mid-May? I'm going to be out of the country for a week and am worried about this whole one time phone call thing.

Hi! Anyone planning on attending the preview day on March 10th?

I have a rottweiler and im having a hard time finding housing with no breed or size restrictions, does anybody have any suggestions?

Hi everyone! Congratulations on your acceptance!! :)

I hope this post is allowed. If not, I'm very sorry.

I'm looking for someone to take over my lease for a second floor studio apartment at the Daumier (just a few steps away from where your classes take place) for June and July. Comes with many conveniences. Rent is $1,369 a month with a $500 security deposit.

Located directly on campus, which lets you sleep in without being late for class. The apartment is located on the second floor with the laundry room being just a few steps down the hall. Laundry is free. Pets are allowed and to my knowledge, there aren't any breed restrictions.

There's a pool, BBQ area, gym, and free coffee/tea/hot chocolate in the lobby that's available 24/7. Internet, water, cable, and gas are all included in the rent. The apartment comes with a flat screen TV that the Daumier owns, a full sized fridge, a dishwasher, stove, microwave, and garbage disposal. Trash chutes are a few steps down the hall. The only thing that you have to pay extra for is electricity (I pay about $13-$15 a month for that). The apartment also comes with a parking pass, which you can use to park your car in the priority Lot A (the parking lot right next to the Daumier). There are also study rooms available on each floor.

I've lived in the apartment for two years and from my experience, not having to worry about finding a safe parking spot that close to campus, being able to go home between classes if I want to relax, and having hot chocolate whenever I want is amazing. The area of the second floor that the apartment is located in is usually very quiet and the windows in the apartment are looking out onto the pool and BBQ areas.

If you want to move in earlier than June 1 and not have to pay for those extra days, that'll be available too, since I plan on moving out by May 22, 2018, but I will have paid for the whole month of May. If you end up falling in love with the convenience and the amenities offered, you can always sign a lease for another year, either for another apartment in the building or for the same apartment if still available.

Please message me if interested or have questions!

Will be giving up my seat to accept a seat elsewhere, good luck everyone!!!

The Helix says they have breed restrictions, but there are jindo's, pit bulls, and a rottweiler there right now! I saw him the other day when I went to go talk to the landlord about my dog, the dog was a big rottweiler too so I would look there. The landlord is named Patty.

Yeah i checked it out, the only problem is that i would need a roommate and not everybody would like to live with a 100lb rottweiler, even though he is super friendly

Are you saying that it might not work because a roommate wouldn't be okay with it or their "no animals in 2 bedroom" policy? Because there are people in two bedrooms that have animals - dogs and cats. I saw dogs going for walks out of the 2 bedroom apartments while I was visiting. As long as both people agree on the animal there should be no problem. I think you'd be surprised who would love to live with a big ol' rottweiler!! Just find someone who wants to room with you and then give Patty a call and ask her if that would be allowed if both of you agree on it.
