Western c/o 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you think any alternates will be accepted before April 15th if a spot opens up? It said alternates would hear in April.... I just need to keep practicing this opportunity to be patient lol

Did anyone get accepted into Davis, but is choosing Western. If so, why?

a friend graduated from westernu in 2018. Picked westernu because of family. She didn’t have to pay rent while at school so the cost made some sense but not too much. I Didn’t apply to Davis but that’s why. My family’s presence is important as my support system.

westernu doesn’t have teaching hospital. I like the 2 and 2 years. Being able to still travel when in vet school seems nice. I’m so familiar with so cal and wouldnt have to overcome those initial barriers. Pomona itself isn’t the best but if school is your main focus, nothing will stop you. I’m glad I’m choosing westernu. I feel they looked at me as an applicant and not a number. Davis is great school but a DVM is a dvm. So idk if I would say that if I had both options but I’m really happy to become about of vet med officially.

That is nice! I got into both. I’m leaning towards western due to location. my nana passed away and its just my mom now so it’s important I stay near her.
I live in san Diego! You? Congrats btw

Ahh I’m sorry. But yeah family is important! A lot of sacrifice is going to be needed. But knowing I can see them within the hour is very comforting for me. Mental health became an issue in undergrad. I built a good enough support system to do well in my last 45 units. Believing in everything happens for a reason. I did undergrad in Pomona. Live 20 mins westernu without traffic. I’ll be moving to Pomona just because of lazy Convenience of travel for the first two years. I hope you can get more prospective about DAvis too! Good luck with your decision!!

Will there be a facebook group or some sort of accepted forum for students to connect for housing?

If you go to the accepted students webpage it says to go to the student portal to find a roommate and to view housing information.

Congrats to everyone that got accepted! If you are an alternate, don't give up hope, there is still a chance for you! I'm a 4th year student and absolutely loved my time at Western, I'm honestly somewhat sad to be graduating haha! 🙂

Is anyone curious to know how low my GPA and GRE were? Far below average, FAR below. Like this post and I will share my numbers....20 likes

I think you technically can. But you’re supposed to have until April 15th to decide.

Okay and the schools don’t talk to each other until then correct? So I can accept and then say never mind to a school and not effect admissions to another?

I don’t know that they talk at all. But what’s your reason for wanting to accept more than one offer before the deadline?

If you’re not sure about a school, don’t take a spot for someone who truly wants it. I think that’s a bit dishonorable to do.

No I get that! I’m not going to! I just started panicking that I’ll lose a spot and won’t go anywhere because I’m taking too long to decide. Harder decision than I thought. Basically, I started freaking out and didn’t want to be out two spots. I know I totally over dramatized that and thought the worse but that’s why I was wondering.

This stemmed because students during the interview said accept instantly because you may lose the spot at western.
But It’ll all happen how it should and I want to be certain first!

Schools can’t force you to commit before the April 15th deadline. Now, Western broke that last year and didn’t receive any repercussions for it. However, I’d be pretty surprised if they pulled that again this year.

No problem! I just think that Western made a big deal at the interviews about accepting because of a mistake they made. So as a student you should be safe until April 15th. But honestly the best way to find out what you want is write all your pros and cons and then flip a coin... and whatever side you secretly hope it lands on while still in mid air is where you should go! LOL

oh man. I love that idea. I’m gonna do that after I get my pro con list finished!

If representatives of Western are telling applicants to accept their offers before the deadline or risk losing their spot, that needs to be reported to the AAVMC COE. Last year, Karen specifically said this. I’m not expecting that anything will actually be done about it because, again, nothing was done about it last year, but people need to be consistent. If Western not only punished accepted applicants for not submitting their deposit soon enough but still before the deadline, and is now telling applicants to do the same, that’s a huge problem.

Doot doot, just passing by...

For those who were asking/wondering about what happened last year and why it matters, this is about the point where it all started in the c/o 2023 thread: Western c/o 2023

You really should not be placing down deposits at multiple schools to secure seats. I mean, it's your money and you can do what you want with it, but the entire point of the AAVMC April 15th agreement is that you shouldn't have to do that. I agree with @ajs513; if actual school representatives are outright telling you that you need to accept your offer of admission and pay a deposit prior to April 15th or risk losing your spot, it needs to be reported.

I was hoping that the school had had this all figured back out after what happened last cycle, but maybe not? I know the official school account never actually explained the situation and/or how they were addressing it following the initial fuss in the c/o 2023 thread, even months after they said they'd report back, which struck me as pretty unprofessional and dismissive, IMO.

Just to be clear, no one on administration has told me anything regarding this other than what was briefly mentioned during the interview. They are not pressuring me or making me feel that way. I only felt that way from fear and my anxiety regarding what previously happened.. not saying it is or will happen again this year! So nothing to report lol
But yes, if the situation was different and it was being threatened, I agree reporting would be best.
I hope everyone takes time to decide! My friend who is in Vet school now wishes she took more time to think (not western, another school).
So I’m just taking my sweet time lol

At my interview at Western, the representative said that they can and will begin accepting deposits before the actual deadline and will update the accepted students once their allotted seats are all filled. I’m guessing by this, she means once their seats are filled with those who paid their deposit, the accepted students who haven’t paid their deposit yet are automatically no longer guaranteed a seat? During this talk, she specifically said she checked with AAVMC about this and that they said this was totally fine.

To me, this seemed like their way of coercing people to submit deposits early without actually coercing explicitly, but... I guess AAVMC is happy with this approach... 😕

I was told that the deposits were refundable as long as you inform them before April date.

After last years mistake, I feel like western may have sent out less acceptances to start off with? Like instead of the 200 from last year, maybe it was a lot less, so they didn’t get inundated with too many acceptances? I feel like they can’t make that mistake again, after the chaos from last year.

I was also told this during my interview day! But it definitely stated that it was "non-refundable" when I paid.

Alternates, will you be getting the the lab work done for the health clearance requirements in case you get an offer?

How long did it take for a westernu email address to be created after the deposit was paid?
