WesternU c/o 2026

How do you like the curriculum so far? And the area? I've never actually been to any west coast state. 😅
It's not that bad. I got my undergrad from cal poly Pomona, you just need to be smart and not walk around at like 3 am at night. I took about a 4 year gap so the curriculum is really nice, I feel more like I'm in the clinic then just sitting in a class. I know everyone worries about how exactly do you learn if you get set cases. They really make sure you hit all the needed sciences and you work as team (which I enjoy cause I'm not about the competition that some schools kind of create).

I thought they did a large number of interviews but only select a around 100 students. like 300 or 400 interviews so i feel like it is still competitive. i may be confusing programs though. the wait this cycle makes this a blur!
Thank you so much for your feedback! 😄 Would you say a good amount of waitlisted applicants gain acceptance or is that something that’s not easy to answer?

Also, I spoke with a vet recently who was doing interviews this cycle, and she said in order to get an interview and then get denied, you’d have to bomb the interview pretty badly 🙄

I'm not sure too much about bombing the interview and getting an invite, when I applied it was my second time. The first time I was waitlisted but the second time I received my acceptance when they let everyone know. My first cycle I felt that I did well but during round two definitely felt that I had grown a lot. I believe it goes through waitlist pretty quick since a lot of people end up hearing from other schools or they get pulled off waitlists once all the schools send out letters. I know tons of schools almost go through the first 100 people on waitlists ( from what I heard with my friends). The only downside with waitlist at western is that they don't rank you, they pull a random name off the list.
Thank you for your input! 😎

I think the statistics they gave us said that they offer around 500 interviews and then take in about 100 students. But I would also keep in mind that because WesternU is one of the last schools to actually get back to people, there may be people who had interviewed with WesternU who choose to pull out their application because they get accepted into other schools. So it's really hard to figure out the statistics imo because of this.

That’s exactly what I was thinking too!! Western takes quite a bit to get back to people, meanwhile other schools have already offered acceptances, so that alone improves the odds.

This is nice to hear because I know that a lot of people are usually talking about how dangerous Pomona is. Out of curiosity, how do you think it compares to Berkeley? I just graduated from UC Berkeley in the winter, and it's another university that is notorious for being located in a dangerous area. We just have a really high homeless population (and really, most of them are harmless and you just feel bad for them), and it seems like we're averaging about 1-2 emails per week about some sort of crime in the area. During my 4.5 years, there have also been 2 incidents with guns (both really close to each other in date). But it's pretty much the same where you just need to be smart and not walk around alone at night. Does this seem about the same level as Pomona or even a little bit better?

Yeah, haha, I've heard back from almost every single place I applied to (I applied to 7), except for WesternU And UPenn, but UPenn stops sending interview invites mid-February so I believe that WesternU will actually be the very last school I hear from.

I don't really know anything about Berkeley, but we do have a some homeless population it's not as bad as compared to like Downtown LA. As far as crime, we've mostly gotten information about people breaking into cars or the most common is stealing the catalytic converter (which is still very few). I will say I did recently get an email about a robbery at g*n point but that was at 3 am at night in an unlight parking lot. But besides that I know of a few students whom live on campus that walk to different stores and clubs at night. We actually have a concert hall in downtown pomona people like to go to. I don't technically live on campus but in the apartments right across the way. Honestly the only annoying thing so far is people randomly will play with fireworks so it's a bit annoying at night. It's again just use common sense and you should be fine.

Lmao, pray for me. At the interview, they asked what I liked doing for fun and I automatically said wine tasting. It's cold here most of the year and there's nm else to do. 🤣 Had to back pedal as I could not believe I let that slip out of my mouth. I then said oh when it's warm out I like to run and bike. There are a lot of pretty trails here. 😄😁 Haha! ✨Healthy lifestyles✨. 😂😭 Hope they appreciated my honesty.

Anyone have any opinions/thoughts on this matter? For those who were waitlisted, were you eventually taken off the list? I’m also wondering how many people are ultimately denied after an interview vs being offered admission vs. waitlisted. These are the thoughts that keep me up at night 😹
I don't know anything about how many people were taken off the waitlist, but I was a part of the cycle last year and I was accepted from the waitlist early May!

I was waitlisted back in 2020 and I eventually got a call/offer! However, they only gave me approximately 15 minutes to decide (granted, it was also two weeks before classes would've began). I decided to decline and reapply during this current cycle (I was also trying to wait out the pandemic because I wanted the full experience of having in person classes... however COVID ended up lasting way longer than I initially thought).

I’m sure they appreciated hearing an uncommon answer!! 😂 I think it should be just fine and you included other hobbies too, so you sound well-balanced. Don’t worry 😉

Ugh, I know, the wait is unreal!!

I’m so glad you applied again!!! I thought covid would have been gone too. Sadly, it’s the opposite.

The interview is closed file so they have not seen your application. I highly recommend going to Western's interview feedback page on SDN to get a feel for the type of questions they will ask you. It was super laid back!
does anyone have a URL to the interview feedback page? couldn't find it!!

Has anyone heard back from this past interview?

Sadly, not yet! I am checking my email relentlessly 😂

nope. 😓 probably checked my email a million times in the last month
No one has heard back, even people who interviewed very early on. They won’t tell us anything until March. Save yourself and stop checking until then, you’ll make yourself crazy!

Hey forum, is anyone planning/able to take a break or vacay before school begins on August 15th? (Given you’re accepted).

Or are y’all just going to work all the way until school begins? Curious to know 😄

Personally, I’m only able to afford taking a 2-week break prior to the beginning of the semester. Wish I could take longer, but, bills…..😅

I plan to work up until I can't. But I will use up my vacation time at work before I leave. The thought of earning no income terrifies me tbh 😝

Also, has anyone who sent in Fall transcripts noticed any change on their portals? I sent mine about a month ago and it still says "awaiting" on my portal... I'm worried I sent them to the wrong place 😱

Same here - no updates. I wouldn't worry about it 🙂

They will not review fall transcripts until after students are accepted. I asked about this in December and this was their response.

has anyone not received an interview offer or denial yet? I haven't received any updates in my portal or email and I'm wondering if I'm looking in the wrong spot. I completed the application checklist in September.

For interview invites, you would have received an email and you would see a message about an interview invite at the top of your portal page. Not sure if they would have sent out any denials yet but from my understanding, they will be interviewing through the end of this month so perhaps they just haven't gotten to your application yet.
Have you received any emails at all from the school?

I might take 5 days off but that would be the max I can afford, so probably not lol, bills and rent are so expensive 😵

Also I believe that they send out all decisions at once in March. I think they do it this way since they use a rolling process when it comes to reviewing applications.

I also have not received any updates on my application. There were some issues regarding my veterinary experience hours being processed so I believe that contributed to the delay. I know that interviews roll till the end of this month. I called and they said that they still have not gotten to my application, does that mean there is still a chance for an interview?

Hello! I would say just wait until the end of February to really gauge where you stand. It is possible they have not yet reviewed your application. What month did you apply? Last year, I was not offered an interview and knew that if I did not hear back by the end of February, that I would need to reapply. It’s OK! There’s nothing bad about reapplying. I reapplied last year after my rejection and got an interview this time around! ☺️

same here! I was debating on attaching the receipt to the portal....😅😂
I almost did that! I also emailed the listed contacts twice... Probably should have held off on that! The portal did eventually update with transcript information. Still no word regarding a decision, but fingers crossed we'll hear back soon!!!! 🤞🤞🤞

It feels like because Western is sending acceptances so late compared to other schools, a lot of people are choosing other options. What is your experience? Curious because Western is my top school since it’s close to my family who’s had a really rough year and I want to see who’s also still holding out! Or who’s chosen another school already!

Y'all I am a fool
I went onto the wrong forum (as I was on mobile) and was panicking to hear that everyone heard decisions and my portal was still blank
Little did I realize I was on the MedSchool Forum
Totally valid! This forum has been my gauge of whether or not to freak out with them interviewing so much later into the year!

I’m one of the western devotees that’s still waiting for a miracle 😂 being close to family is important to me too!

Same situation here. I hate that Western is a private institution and one of the lower ranked schools, but my family and bf's family are in CA so it would be really nice to finally be near them again (we've been away for over 8 years). Fingers crossed for all us CA folks! 😆

Did you get an interview offer? 😄
Yes I’ve had my interview but I was waitlisted before and my interview was offered in October, this time I had to wait till February! But they also downloaded my last LoR late because they had my full application before my last one went in with the extension. I was thinking give them my part ASAP because you’re allowed to but then I had to follow up with Jaziel like 5 times to make sure they actually got my last LoR so I think it pushed me way out on interviews

So you’re a second time applicant?? And western waitlisted you last year after your interview?

I’m also in so cal and waiting on western! Was waitlisted last year…. Hoping this is my year 🙂
