494 MCAT (I know it's low)
Crisis Text Line Volunteering (Not sure on exact hours but over 50 nearing 100)
10-15 hours shadowing Pod with LOR

Just got denied (my only application this cycle since it's late), curious what was wrong with my application and why I wouldn't even get a chance with my stats. I know they aren't the best but I figured I'd get an interview, is it just because it's so late in the cycle?? Pretty upset right now.

At this point I'm probably going to get a scribe job and apply really early next cycle, nothing else I can do but wait.

I’m sorry to hear about your R. It could very well be that you are too late in this cycle, but do you know of any red flags in your application? Barry enjoys seeing applicants with more shadowing experience, so see if you can shadow one or two more DPMs for the upcoming cycle.

I don't know, I did only shadow the one Pod along with a dermatologist for a total of about 25 hours, but that's really easy to fix. Other than that and being too late I'm not sure what happened unless you know of any other red flags?

Probably just cause you applied late. Just apply early next time to multiple places, no need to change anything except maybe your interview skills.
 
Apply before the end of the year and you will get accepted at a majority of schools if you can pass as normal.

DMU and AZPOD might be a bit harder with that MCAT, but I would not rule it out, especially if you apply early. Apply to the schools you like.

Thanks for the reassurance, I honestly was worried about how late I had to apply but due to personal circumstances I figured I'd apply to just one school this cycle (Barry) and see how it went.. Fortunately I didn't pay to fly to an interview just to be declined, since I didn't even get the invite.
 
I am planning on applying in August or September to Barry Podiatry School and I wanted to know my chances of getting in.
cGPA- 3.47
sGPA - 3.15
MCAT - taking in July. I got a 490 on a practice exam. ( I know it's low, I hope to get around 495)

Great chances at Barry. Get a good MCAT score and you have great chances at a scholarship as well.
 
So I talked to admissions yesterday and was told even though I would've been wait-listed (class was full), I didn't get an II not due to that but due to lacking shadowing (I had 15 hours) and volunteering. Does anyone else have experience getting an R due to that? I'm not giving up obviously since she even said my grades/MCAT were more than good enough but it seems strange since I basically never see anyone on this forum even mention volunteering/shadowing being an issue.

She also said the timing of the app had no negative effect but that doesn't make any sense considering I'd have been wait-listed even if I got in.
 
Good news is it’s an easy fix. Go find a pod to shadow.

In my last post, I did mention that Barry enjoys seeing applicants with above average shadowing experience. I experienced something similar in my application. I strongly encourage you to shadow a couple more DPMs, 16-20 hrs each.

Really strange to not interview someone with just 15 hours of shadowing. They should have at least gave you a chance for an interview.

I do remember in the AACPMAS packet that Barry preferred applicants with "substantial" shadowing hours.

You still have 10 more days until applications close. If I were in your shoes, I'd apply to Scholl, New York, and Kent State right now. Your GPA and MCAT tell me you're probably ready for podiatry school.

After considering this advice I decided to take it, I only applied to Barry over other schools because it's reasonable (few hours) driving distance from most of my family in Florida, but I'd take only seeing them on Holidays over a gap year as a med scribe. Worst case scenario I'm out $135, but I'm confident I should get in to one of these four schools.


One last question, isn't the chance pretty high I get waitlisted from these 3 schools? Even Barry was legitimately FULL at this point and it's usually not as bad from what I hear.

This late in the game, I don't think anyone will be adding onto their waitlist, just gonna get accepted or rejected. But Barry has a much smaller class size than Kent State so you should be good.

I heard Scholl is almost full. I think someone said they only had like 5 seats left open, but I also heard NYCPM is really trying to fill more seats so hopefully you’ll have luck there!

True. Scholl is almost full (last number I got was about 10 more)...NYCPM still has more seats available!

cGPA: 3.37
sGPA: 2.83
MCAT: WIll be taking in July. Took AAMC FL 1 and got 502
Extracurricular: 2 years (800 hours) of shadowing General Surgeon, 2 years (200 hours) of volunteering in geriatric emergency department, Summer Clinical Research (50 hours), worked part-time for more than half of college career (about 20 hours per week), planning on shadowing podiatrist this summer

Just wondering when you say lack of shadowing, is it specifically lack of podiatry shadowing or lack of shadowing any medical professional. I'm applying in August and have a lot of hours shadowing an MD but barely any shadowing a pod. I plan to get more pod shadowing before August.

I have 15 hours shadowing Pod and a similar amount shadowing a derm and Barry said it was too little to be certain I wanted to do Podiatry. I'm not sure if they consider the derm shadowing to be a negative but those were the exact words.

I don't think your derm shadowing would necessarily be a negative. I hope not because I have
about a couple hundred hours shadowing a general surgeon, but only about 5 pod shadowing hours.​
I guess they just want a lot of pod shadowing, which makes sense. I just called pod in my local area and will be shadowing him next month. I should have my app ready mid August so will try to shadow 2-3 pods between now and August. Hope to get about 50 pod shadowing hours before end of August.

What is your sGPA?

A lot depends on MCAT.
 
Anything above a 490 MCAT will get you into the bigger schools if your not picky.

495 and you’ll have your choice between schools.

500 and top schools will pick you

Update on my friend: got his score back recently, scored a 511 with an even distribution across subsections (128/127/129/127). How does he stand now? Should he maybe consider DO schools, particularly his in-state? I imagine if he performs well in his remaining year he will be in good standing for podiatry schools.

Will def get into podiatry school with scholarships. But if his passion lies in literally any other medical specialty or he isn't even sure what his passions are, I'd pursue the DO.
 
With a score like that, unless he has a burning desire to be a surgeon, and has a 3.0+, I’d apply to DO school.

I’d apply to both DO and DPM personally with a 511.

Will be fine for Pod.
2.8sGPA is still low for DO schools.
But, personally, with a 511, I'd do an SMP affiliated with an MD program.
It all comes down what they want to do.

Looking to apply to SCPM, potentially other schools in Midwest. MCAT (499), cGPA (3.570), sGPA (3.482). Medical Sciences major w/ History minor. Highly active in social fraternity with terms as New Member Educator and VP. 120+ volunteering hours at local hospital ER. Extensive research throughout all 4 years. Have shadowed primary care physicians, multiple surgeons (cardiothoracic, orthopedic, and podiatric), will be shadowing podiatric again throughout remainder of the summer.

Same question as most, would anyone happen to know my chances/how can I improve my chances?

You look pretty much golden to me as long as you interview well and have podiatry shadowing hours. If you retake the MCAT for around a 505 you could possibly even get into DO schools with your stats

I've heard that applying for surgical residencies w/ DO is more difficult. The goal is podiatric surgeon from PMSR/RRA.

Chances are great everywhere.
 
If I am applying for the upcoming cycle, when would I ask for rec letters/would getting a rec letter from a podiatrist that went to the same institution that you are applying to help? Also, what are the interview questions like? Are they similar to those of med school interviews?

Ask for the letters sooner rather than later, doctors can generally be quite busy so giving them some time to complete the letter is better for you and honestly just a more respectful move.

The only advantage it may give is if they are able to tell you about the school before applying. The schools themselves don't care that much I believe.

Check the sdn interview page, really helpful. Just gotta be ready in the event there's a flag on your transcript to answer for it.

1. Ask for letters ASAP so that your professors take their time writing a thoughtful letter.
2. Where the podiatrist went to school is not important.

Click on a school, click 'view all question and responses', continuously press 'show more responses' under each tab. I copied them all into a Word document, deleted the duplicates, and prepared general answers for each.

I'm aware that I could potentially go DO/MD with a bit of effort, but I really do like the podiatric scope of practice. At this point, I'd like to enroll into a medical profession and I am simply curious about my chances with my current stats. Thank you again.

You're in excellent shape. Apply on day 1 and get them scholarship monies !!

Combine those numbers with a decent MCAT and you will have a good chance at most schools.
