William Carey (WCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Since my class was the first class to do rotations, most of us picked our hub site based on geographical preference. The classes coming behind us will have more to go on. You guys will have the option to ask those who came before you about each site. Good questions to ask would be: how receptive was the hospital to having students? We're the preceptors there eager to teach? Were lectures a part of the curriculum? Does the hospital provide meals? How many beds does the hospital have? Etc etc.

Few more questions......The affiliated hospitals they have in the wcucom website, are those the hub sites or those are for away rotations in 4th year? Where are the hub sites? What's the order of the rotation (FM,IM,Peds,Ob/gyn etc)? Are they assigned or the students choose the order of the rotations?

Has anyone received an interview invite from here lately?

Hi everyone,

First time poster, long time follower. I received an interview at William Carey on April 29th. Does anyone have any idea how full the class will be at this point? This is my first choice school, and I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone.

Thank you!

You should be fine. I interviewed in late april of 2011 and was accepted. Be sure to interact with the students during lunch. They will be there to answer any and all questions.

Also ready to get this done. Lots of plans this summer, don't want to have to schedule around filling out paperwork.

I haven't found the facebook group.. Do you mind providing the link if you know it please.

Have we heard of anyone else? I am still on the deferred list at the moment. Keeping my fingers crossed that I get to join y'all!

I believe there were 7 in my group!

WC students?

Only a 2nd year gearing up for boards. The first class had only a 72% first pass rate on COMLEX, which we were told was about average for the first class.

There were a couple of reasons for this:

1) They were way over the number of hours in the classroom.

2) School did NOT finish for them until the middle of June

3) There was NO minimum COMSAE score to be able to take the COMLEX

These issues are being addressed, I expect my class to have a much better pass rate. The contact hours, hours in class, has been reduced to a maximum of 25. For comparison, this semester we have about 30 hour in class.

Hope this helps. Now back to whatever it was that I was doing???

The first two points are troubling, did the school not understand that the students needed to study for step 1?

They do and corrections have been made to address this. The tale will be told on how well my class does. I fully expect us to be at the national average at least.

Keep in mind, that with ANY new school NO MATTER HOW HARD THEY TRY, the first couple of classes especially, will be guinea pigs. I knew this coming in. The class entering this fall should be far removed from the problems of the first class.

Has anyone that interviewed either in late April or early May heard anything yet? Or does anyone at the school know when admissions are making their final decisions?

This is a little bit of a post-hijack I suppose, but just checking in. I'm a pediatric intern up at Blair E Batson in Jackson - just wondering if any of the WCU students were coming up to do a peds month with us!

I got my undergrad and grad degrees from Carey back before the DO school existed... awesome place. Hope y'all are enjoying it!

I'm not sure if WCUCOM students do rotations at UMC. Anyone have info on this?

I am NOT rotating there, but I know that we have 5 slots for rotations for Jackson. Just not sure where the rotations are.

I have enjoyed my time at Carey and I do agree that it is an awesome place.

I'm looking to apply to WCU-COM, but I am a WA resident and from looking though this thread it doesn't look like they accept a lot of people not from the SE quadrant of the US. My stats are 3.5ish sGPA and cGPA (should get this up to about 3.7 each with three science classes I'm taking this year), good ECs though none working in rural areas other than non-medical mission trips to build houses in the slums of Mexico and help migrant farm workers in WA.

If I applied would I even have a shot at a secondary/ acceptance? Thanks!

A little late in the game, but I just confirmed my interview with WCUCOM for April 7th. I am very excited!
