WSU c/o 2017 Applicants!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes of course USU/WSU peeps can join too! Just search "WSU CVM class of 2017" on Facebook. Find the group-there's only one and click join!

Hi there. I only see groups for WSU CVM class of 2014 and WSU CVM class of 2016.

I'm having the same problem finding the fb page. Did you make it searchable?

Here's another question for the "been there done that" students... what will our first year schedules be like? I've found the Professional Curriculum portion of the site and while comparing it to the Schedule of Classes, there are a lot of time conflicts (for example, cell phys and anatomy meet at the same time on Fridays). What am I missing? Halp.

You register for the courses but Karen Hornfelt does the all the 1st/2nd/3rd year schedule logistics. You should get your schedule in your information packet if memory serves. Basically we take so many classes that we only have some on some weeks and its impossible for the scheduling software to handle that. Plus you are assigned as a 1a, 1b, 2a or 2b and that dictates your lab time. We don't have 95 students in every lab or it would be mayhem. Make sense?

The times on the scheduling software at are just fake. And some of your classes will be impossible to add and Karen will add you by hand.

Congrats Class of 2017!!! Come visit me in clinics next year. 😉

Hi all! I was also wait listed for K-State and I got the "YOU'RE IN!" phone call today! Good luck to everyone waiting to hear form Wazzu! I expect they should start calling soon since other schools are getting that process started!

Hi! Does anyone know if they've started to contact waitlisters?

Hey I called Barbara Hodson to have myself removed from the waitlist because I got into another school and she said they were "happy with where they were" and won't be contacting any waitlisters from the sound of it. 🙁

Another one bites the dust... :/ I guess I'm down to 3 waitlists.

Hi 2017ers!

How are you guys doing? Any burning questions? I know this was about the time where I got some major ants in my pants waiting for that packet. Let me know if you have any questions or need anything!! Just a little over 3 months until I get to meet you all!!

Hey Camelid and other current students!
I'm just curious what the ranking system is like and what you think of it? I honestly didn't even know that's how grading was done there until it was a component of a question in my interview. I've looked for information about it on the website but haven't been able to find anything.
I wouldn't say this is a burning question, but I do appreciate the offer to tame the ants in my pants 🙂

You are assigned a rank at the end of every semester based on cumulative points you were awarded in your classes for the semester. I think the points are some how weighted based on the credit hours for the class but honestly we aren't really involved in this process. The rankings are cumulative throughout vet school I believe.

You can choose to see your rank or not by asking Karen at the end of the semester. No one else gets to see your rank (it's not like in the movies where everyone's names are put in rank order and posted on a door somewhere). But since I'm a 1st year I've only lived through one semester of the ranking process so take all of this with a grain of salt-- there's a chance the process is somehow different at the end of the year versus end of the semester and I just haven't lived through it yet 🙂

Honestly most people don't know their ranks (upperclassmen have told me it's the same for their classes as well). I had to find mine out for a scholarship application and it was no big deal. Totally your choice to take or leave the information which is nice. It really does make for a non-competitive environment.

Oh thanks! That's really helpful. So courses/exams will be graded the same ol' way we've always had them graded? It won't be the fictional list on the door of where you stand with regards to your classmates?

Nope. We get our exams in our boxes and no one sees your score but you. In some classes if you don't get above passing on the exam (which varies by class-- in some classes an 80 is a P and some classes a 75 is a P) the professor asks you to meet with them to see if they can help you learn in a way that's better for you for the next exam.

Oh and I just realized- my perspective is only Pullman campus. I really have no idea how the Utah campus does the ranking/exam return process (although I would suspect the same as the Pullman campus). I think there is someone on the forum from Utah who is semi-active on SDN so hopefully she can answer these questions from the Utah perspective 🙂

The week before school starts we have the orientation/leadership thing….what is that all about!? Is it right in Pullman? For just us first years or do all veterinary students go?

Anything special you think we should know? Any special ways we should be preparing for vet school in pullman? I am excited! 🙂

So I think Monday of orientation, you guys get badges/sign up for electives/hear about financial aid etc. The COLE program is in Coeur D'Alene Idaho from Monday evening-Thursday (I think) and is a time to get to know your fellow classmates. There are also COLE mentors (I am one) which are 2nd/3rd year students who are there to answer your questions about school and alleviate your stresses before school starts. I honestly had an awesome time at COLE. It's in an amazing rustic resort with great food and a ropes course/lake/lots of hiking trails etc. It's an awesome time to soak up the vet school buying all your meals and snacks for a few days and time to enjoy the outdoors with your new classmates for a few days before jumping into the trenches together.

How to prepare? SLEEP!! Catch up on sleep, spending time with your pets and spouses. There's entire threads devoted to suggestions for what to do the summer before school starts and most vet students agree that the best thing you can do for yourself is to get lots of rest and actively try not to worry about class.

You guys will be great! Vet school is awesome and I'm excited to meet the incoming class!

Camelidcrazy, thank you so much for your support. You are so sweet to offer so much of your time to settling our nerves, and I look forward to meeting you. It really does make a difference.

Agreed 😀 Thanks so much for your help, you have been an awesome resource!

Don't know why I'm already concerning myself with how I'm going to be graded in vet school but I'm sure it has something to do with completing my last two prereqs this semester. One class is the traditional 'your grade will be whatever you get on your midterms and final' and I feel great about it, the other is a horrendously curved "weed-out" class for pre-professional programs (100 level sadly) that you really have no idea how you are doing in until grades are calculated at the end of the semester. :scared:

The ranking is combined with our counterparts up at WSU. Like Camelidcrazy said, we aren't involved in the process at all. I know our courses this semester haven't lined up the same, so I am sure the statistics are normalized to accommodate for the differences between campuses. It's something I haven't really been all that concerned about and haven't inquired about my rank, but there are a few people who could point you in the right direction here. At the end of the day, even the person ranked last in the class still gets a DVM as long as they pass all their classes. Try not to stress about the ranking that much!

Several of our tests have been taken on the computer, and have been written by our professors here. So our exam return process is quite a bit different than our counterparts. But don't worry, we've got your back! We've gone through quite a few hurdles to improve the glitches for the next group! 😀 you're welcome!

As far as COLE goes, ditto everything Camelidcrazy said! (Heeeeeeyyyyy I'm a COLE mentor too!) It will be a phenomenal time! I'm also an ambassador, so I'll get to see you all before you leave for COLE, so you'll already know a group of us before it starts. I know your packets are still being compiled and you're super antsy to get all the details. Just keep being patient! They'll come!

If you have anymore questions about the USU aspect of things, just let me know! (Maybe PM me...I don't come on here as often anymore, but I get alerts for PM, so that'll remind me to check it!)

Super excited to meet everyone!!!

Hey thanks for all the awesome info! I'm itching to finish up this semester & get down to Logan for a visit. I emailed the class prez about this, but wondering what your thoughts are about the difficulty of finding housing with a big dog? It's always been a constant struggle for me in MT.

I have a border collie and a cat. I did have to do some negotiating with my landlord to let me have him. Several of our classmates have decent sized dogs (seems like those who do live in houses rather than apartments). It's definitely a possibility, you'll just have to dig a little. And obviously start now! Have you tried looking at KSL.com? You may have more luck there than you would with craigslist or other local classifieds. My rental is through coldwell banker gold key realty, so you may check them out and see if they have any options for you. I had to live a little farther removed from campus for my place, but it's only about 15-20 min to get to school so it's not too bad. So if you come across places in Hyrum, Millville, Providence, or River Heights, those places are all about 15 min from campus, but looking there may give you some more options. Cache Valley is kind of a string of little communities connected by the highway, so commuting is not too much of a drag.

Thanks, that is really helpful! I'd just been looking at craiglist and some of the local property management companies and not having a whole lot of luck. I'm hoping I can find a situation I'll be happy in for 2 years and not continue in my current pattern which has been to move at least once a year for the past 8 years, yuck.

It was awesome! I met all but one of our professors and the program coordinator, who is seriously probably the nicest man I have ever met! And the area is beautiful! I'm so excited!

That's so cool! I can't wait to finish these classes and go down for a visit.

Question about the COLE thing. Do you have to spend the night/multiple nights at this place in Idaho or is a just a day thing? It will really suck if it is overnight since I would have to make special arrangements for my pets.

It's a multiple day thing. I have to find someone in Logan to watch my critters.

That's unfortunate. Well, one of my cats is currently trying to chew his way into a package of pasta so maybe a break wouldn't be so bad. The eight month old pair are nothing but trouble.

COLE is the week before school starts. You'll want to plan for at least 4-5 days. You'll have a couple nights at the camp and then the week ends with your White Coat Ceremony back at the WSU campus. There are second years in town (Logan), so I'm sure we'll be able to find some folks willing to watch pets.

This may be a dumb question, but when is the first day of class?

August 19th! And just FYI, USU follows WSU's school calendar (which is a little off from the rest of the university...for instance we get a whole week at Thanksgiving while the rest of USU only gets half the week!). So you can find the calendar on WSU's website if you are planning for travels over Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Break. 👍

No problem-o! Glad to help out! Those were all questions I had last year and didn't really have anyone to ask! So ask away!

And you should be excited! This is one of the most exciting changes in your life! Eat it up, celebrate and enjoy every moment of it!

I never posted before, but I want to inform IS WSU wait-listers that they are not going to call alternate. This is the email I received from Barbara Hodson this morning:

Quote:"At this time our class is full and we are not making any offers to students on the alternate list. We do not rank our students on the alternate list. If a spot comes open I let Dr. Talcott know and then she lets me know who they will be offering."

Hey question for Camelidcrazy-
Do you know when we should expect to hear about our financial aid awards? I read somewhere most schools send them in early to mid April. Does WSU send them out in our packets? Thanks in advanced!

Hey question for Camelidcrazy-

Hmmm. I didn't get an incoming scholarship and my friends who did were all WICHE and heard at the time of admission about their scholarships, I believe. So I'm not sure if you are thinking about 'package' like in undergrad when you get your loans/scholarships at the same time, but that's not really how vet school works. First semester the vast majority of us just get loans in our financial aid 'package'. I don't personally know anyone who received work study.

So it this is what you were asking: We were supposed to hear back from financial aid on loans by the first day of class but there were some weird things that went down this year (WSU completely changed the financial aid software... Really long story about a terrible mess) so many of us didn't get our awards until September or October. But we were PROMISED that this would never happen again. So you will hopefully hear back on loans by the first day of class as long as you filled out your FAFSA on time.

Does that answer your question? Sorry! Looming finals + anatomy final this morning = idiot me. Hopefully this post was at least 40% English.

Question-- how forgiving are professors about missed classes for certain excuses? A close friend is getting married halfway across the country (on a Friday, of course 🙄 ) and I'm supposed to be in the wedding party. Is it crazy to expect my professors to let me make up a lab/test, depending on what's going on the two days that I will miss? Will they be upset if I miss lectures?

Our profs @ USU have been pretty good about that kind of stuff. Just let them know in advance. Missing lecture is up to you to get the notes (and a lot of our profs post their lecture slides) so it is not too big a deal. We had one student that had to miss a test for a Jesish holiday. They let him take it early so he could get out of town. They treat you like professionals--when things come up they let you take care of it, but it's up to you to catch yourself up.

That's good to know! I've been worrying because I had a professor throughout undergrad who didn't let me make up a quiz I missed for a funeral or one I missed for my Washington State interview! (Those were two separate semesters, but I gave him warning ahead of time.) He taught pre-vet specific courses, too, you'd think he'd at least let me make up the vet school one... :|

Thanks for the info on the loan stuff. I was asking about loans and not scholarships. The first day of class strikes me as pretty last minute to find out how much of a loan you are allowed to take out though-isn't tuition due the third week of the term or something like that? In undergrad I remember getting the information in advance of the term starting. Do most people have a loan that covers tuition and some living expenses? It would kind of suck to find out on the first day of school that you needed to get a part time job or take out an additional loan to cover costs or something. Thanks again for all your time Camelidcrazy-good luck on finals

I believe every student is guaranteed full tuition. Every student I know was eligible for the federal max which was like 40ish,000$ for IS students. More than enough for IS tuition + living.

I was also pretty worried since my husband and I both made good salaries the year before school but it was no problem at all- I was offered way more than I needed. And yes it is stressful that vet students have to hear after the undergrads. Most definitely. It's just the way WSU does it for some reason.
