WSU/USU c/o 2018 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi guys. I'm in my home country for the holidays (international student) and was wondering if the application status changes when you get an acceptance letter. If I got an acceptance letter in snail mail that's fine but if it's an interview invite I need to ask someone to go look at the letter for me from my college mailbox, since I'm flying back to the US on Jan 4th.

Hey. I am an international student too so I can tell you as much as I know.
Even before I got my snail mail interview invite, my status changed to "offered interview" on the application status tab on the supplemental application website.
So go ahead check that and see if you were offered an interview. If it did change, you should probably have your actually snail mail invitation either in your mailbox or on the way.
It does say that we have to notify by January 3rd of the intention to attend the scheduled interview so if you were offered, I suggest you get someone to go look for the letter.
All the out of area interviews are supposed to be January 13th -17th so your travel back to the states should give you enough time.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

It seems if you get an interview they change your status. If you get accepted without an interview they don't change your status.

Anesthtc, I noticed that you were accepted to WSU sans-interview. Are you a WICHE applicant, perchance?

Thanks so much!

I'm pretty sure I'm a Tier I applicant and I haven't gotten my status changed (or a rejection email) so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Maybe anesthtc is WICHE applicant, cause it seems like all the non-WICHE people are having interviews before they get accepted?

Yup. They don't interview WICHE applicants. I probably should have specified.

And........... rejected...
Letter just came. Says they had 1200 applicants. Sheesh!! Rough year! Well, that is that, back to studying and an end to insane portal and mail checking! Kinda a relief, as messed up as that is... it was kinda driving me nuts & I was getting all obsessive with checking and rechecking all day long. My neighbors across the street were starting to stare at me as I went out to look at the mail box around 10x a day. I felt like a crazy person, but couldn't help it! Plus honestly, better a rejection now than for me to spend money I really really don't have to fly out for an interview and then be rejected. Gotta say, everyone who did get an interview, you kicked some major butt to get that! Good job, so much competition and you did it! Ok, seriously, back to studying for tomorrows final... bleh!

I know how that feeling of relief is, I felt the same last year after I was rejected and wait-listed. I say open a bottle of wine and just take a day or two off!

I wonder if the tier 2 applicants will hear before Christmas? I mean invites have been going out for over 2 weeks now and it seems like there are still alot pending?

Anyone know how many interview offers they send out in general?

IS here, status changed to "offered interview" today! Keep checking, I bet a lot more will change this week too.

Denied. I figured this would happen since I was tier 2.

Where is this status page? Is it the one on the supplemental application because they says absolutely nothing about admission for me. It only mentions if my application sections were submitted.

Log in to your supplemental and go to the tab that says 'Application Status.' It will say 'Pending,' or.....something else.

Stupid question: what does "c/o" mean? I'm sure it's obvious but I'm drawing a blank.

What is the best way to prepare for the interview? any suggestions?

There's not much you can really do to prepare. Just go through your life, and go over some momentous experiences that exemplify your leadership or behavior under pressure. Also, going over your application doesn't hurt either, just to make sure you have everything in order in your mind.

Other than that, what I have done during other interviews is just relax and be yourself. Most of the questions won't have "right or wrong" answers, they just want you to be genuine.

I went to my school's career center & did a mock interview. THAT was helpful & eye opening. I hate talking up myself & realized just simple questions like "tell us about yourself." needed to be thought about & I needed to have a good answer ready to pull from my head that addressed why I would make a good vet & a good vet student. I also looked on this forum at threads W/ interview questions that other students had been asked at other schools. I think there were some from WSU as well (My interview wasn't for WSU).
Re-read your application & know it! Chances are good some of the questions will be directed at any potential weaknesses you have, or something in your application that caught their eye in a good way & they want more info about.
Most importantly, try if you can to deal w/the little stresses you do have control over. In my case, I was being cheap & wore a suit that I felt awkward in. I got it used, should have just bit the bullet & gotten something that was new, fit & I liked vs feeling like some weirdo in an ill-fitting suit . I was stressed from flying in & finding my way around to the interview, I did get there early, which is pretty obvious & always a good idea, but I should have searched out a good coffee place that was on the way the night before. I didn't find coffee, I'm all particular about coffee & won't drink bad coffee, so I was completely brain dead during the interview!! Bad!! A simple thing like having know beforehand where a good coffee place, that was open early would have greatly improved my performance! Good luck! Just keep in mind, you'll most likely have around 30 minutes to sell yourself as a good vet school candidate, make the most of those minutes!

Agreed. Do mock interviews. Practicing in front of people is super helpful. You don't realize how much you may flounder or stutter etc until you try to say it out loud. If you don't have a place to go to do mock interviews, print out questions and do them with family/friends.

AND THIS IS FOR EVERYONE. Be current on affairs affecting veterinary medicine. New improvements, current trends and changes in laws.

I'd also suggest to record the mock interviews, & watch it w/someone knowledgeable about interviewing. As Abney said, good to know if you say "um" all the time or talk too fast. 🙂

I am a bit older than you guys so have done my share of screwing up interviews! 🙂 Over time, I kinda learned how to say what they want to hear. Good point Abney, I have heard from several people that they may throw in a couple of questions about the current issues in vet med. I heard vet360 is a good source.

Lol how old do you think I am?

And do not say what you think they want to hear! That's important. Be truthful. Even if it's "I don't know"

hahaha, I didn't mean you are young... I meant I am bordering on being an old fart!

Yeah, I would not want to seem fake and insincere, just not naive about the profession. They don't wanna hear " I like playing with kitten and puppies and that's why I am here! "....

Oh yes definitely. You need thoughtful, intelligent, and if possible, unique answers.

I had a couple of those lol. I had interviewed the year before so they asked "what makes you a better applicant this year?"

I honestly answered "I'm divorced now. Won't be tethered to someone who doesn't believe in my dreams like I do"

I have declined my interview offer.
I hope someone on this thread who has been waiting to get one receives it.
Good luck everyone : ]

My interview is the 17th! What is everyone thinking they're gonna wear to the mixer/social?

I don't get to go to the mixer because of my flight times. But I would probably wear nicer casual clothes. Definitely not what I'm wearing to the actual interview.

Last year I wore jeans and a nice shirt 😛 it's mostly student ambassadors there.
Ok cool thanks!! Are the students like "interviewing" you secretly? Isn't there a school that does that on their tour? Lol!! I just want to make sure I'm fully prepared!!

So is it true that most students live in trailer parks there? Not apartments?

I live in a mobile home park. I lived in apartments in Pullman as an undergrad and I really prefer the mobile home. You only have to pay the lot rent which is a lot leas than rent. Also you are away from the drunken hoards of undergrads. I think a lot of cet students live here becasue you don't have to pay pet rent, there is no pet deposit, ajd all of the mobile home parks are pet friendly with fenced backyards.

But there are apartments available if you want them right? I'm currently splitting 1400 a month with a roommate so anything below that is a deal to me.

There are apartments available. Most 2 bedrooms I looked at ran around $700 to about $1200. I rented a 1 bedroom past year in about the cheapest apartment complex in Pullman and it was $450 a month. They raised the lot rent and now I think it runs around $475 to $500 for a one bedroom and a 2 bedroom was around $700. But this was about the absolute cheapest place I could find. There was a non-refundable pet deposit of $300, but there was free internet.
A lot of the bigger apartment complexes are owned by DABCO, however they only have one complex that is pet friendly and last I looked I think the 2 bedrooms were around $850. I had better luck looking for smaller complexes or individual landlords when looking for pet-friendly places but depending on when you are looking they do seem hard to find at times. For comparison my lot rent is $290 a month.

I'm assuming a lot of people being their pets then.
Am I odd for not bringing one? Haha.

Trailer park sounds awesome! There was a similar set-up at the grad school I attended. Said grad school eventually closed the trailer 'village' to make room for a parking lot. They 'paved paradise...and put up a parking lot.' LAMESAUCE!

Wow!! I can't even comprehend these prices...I live in so cal and pay 1650 (cheapest around by far), for a small 2 bedroom "townhome", which is basically an apartment. It has a tiny 12x12 patio for my dog. Most places around here are 1900-2000 for one and two bedrooms. Crazy. Lol!!!!

HELLO does anyone have advice for interviews? i got rejected from every school i applied to besides wsu so I'm freaking out and really want to do well. Also, does anyone know the stats for how many interviewed applicants get accepted?
