So for OOS students going to Logan for the first two years, we can't establish residency in Utah, correct? I found this on the website: "Out-of-area residents accepted at the Logan site will not be able to change their residency after they are accepted to the program". Does this mean I can only be considered in state in WA (and pay in state tuition) for my fourth year?

I was honestly a little leery since it's a new program etc, but it's been great. I like my class, I like the professors, we get awesome opportunities and can get more hands on than is available in Pullman only because there are so few of us.
I've met a few of your IS classmates and they are really nice!

Would you recommend on or off site campus housing? I suppose I will get more information once my packet comes in the mail, but I haven't found much information online about USU for vet students. And what is the city of Logan like, did you enjoy living there?

It's kinda....rough for housing with pets. It's not the most dog friendly place. I have friends int he second year, and a family in my class, that live in on campus housing. It's reasonably priced, and super convenient. But you can't live there of you have any pets at all. Most everyone lives off campus. The town is uber small so basically anywhere you live is close to campus. Plus, if you don't want to drive, the bus system here is free and really, really good. And drops you off right in front of the first year classroom. I have a 2bd/1.5ba to myself and I don't pay a lot. Plus I have 2 dogs and a cat.

I agree with Abney's response above. Finding a place to live in Logan with pets can be difficult. I own a large dog (Male Greyhound; he's about 75 lbs), and found it tough finding an apartment in Logan proper. I ended up renting a house owned by the company for which I worked. That being said, there were options for 'pet friendly' housing in the surrounding communities (i.e. Providence, Hyrum, Smithfield, etc.) that were reasonably close (less than a 30 minute drive). I don't have issues with commuting- I've commuted most of my adult life. As such, I would have no issues living further away from campus (and may actually prefer this). I was speaking with Abney while I was interviewing in Logan and she mentioned some nice places in Logan proper that sounded like very reasonable options for an individual with pets. Things may have changed. I haven't cruised the Logan housing market since 2010.
As for living in Logan, I'll admit that it took me quite a while to adjust. I have lived in a variety of locations: Massachusetts, California, and New Jersey. Logan, UT was the most difficult move by far. Logan is a small town (well under 50,00 residents), and I would classify it as a predominantly homogenous community (certainly not diverse in comparison to other locations where I have lived). I am also 34 years old, female, and single. You will find that this is quite a rare demographic in Northern Utah. Abney may disagree with me here. I didn't move to Utah originally to attend school. I originally moved to Utah to work for a very small company. As such, I didn't have a 'ready made' social network that is built into the structure such as you would find with veterinary school. The social adjustment to life in Logan was challenging. I ended up making it work, but it took a good, long while before I was settled in and 'happy.' I have lived in Salt Lake City for the past 3 years, and will state up front that I greatly prefer life in Salt Lake to life in Logan. It is simply much more diverse, and is more 'loose' feeling in general (less uptight, at least from where I sit).
That being said, Cache Valley (the geographical area in which Logan is situated) is absolutely gorgeous. Nature's beauty abounds. Utah State sits at the mouth of Logan Canyon. You have to experience it in the flesh to truly appreciate its magnificence, in all seasons. One of the hobbies I picked up upon relocating to Utah is fly fishing. I greatly enjoy this activity (I hesitate to call it a 'sport-' it is far more an art form), and opportunities for practicing abound along the Logan River. If you're into skiing/boarding, Beaver mountain is just a hop, skip, and jump up Logan Canyon (the bigger mountains are just a short drive south- about 90 miles- to SLC and Park City; well worth the drive for Utah's famous 'Best Snow on Earth'). Enjoy hunting? There are opportunities for that in Idaho and Utah as well. I would hazard a guess that several of our classmates (at least the ISers) will be avid outdoorsmen/women, having grown up on ranches, farms, and the like.
I don't want to 'get down' on Logan. It is truly a beautiful place- lovely, safe community nestled in a gorgeous mountain setting. Family friendly, low crime. Decent restaurants (although Utah [generally, not even SLC] has nothing on a state like California when it comes to quality/diversity of cuisine), and an absolutely stellar cost of living. The one drawback that I do think is worth mentioning is the diversity. In my experience and opinion, Logan is simply not a diverse community. This frustrated me for quite a while upon relocation. I will miss Salt Lake City's diversity, and will certainly make trips 'down south' to get my fill.

I'm in the same boat as you. I feel like I haven't had as much shadowing experience as most people. They told me in my interview that my grades were excellent though....I'm just so nervous. I keep checking my phone to see if I've gotten an email...
I wonder about the order. My last name starts with a B and my state is Wisconsin, so if there's an order with those variables, I'd either be first or last. Definitely not first!

They did say the end of the month in my interview. And in the interview offer letter they said that decisions would be made a week after the last interviews were over. Which was the Friday of OOS interviews...soooo. Yeah. Soon! 😀 😀

I know!! I was expecting notification on Friday! I was stalking the mailman all week
Ahhhhhh so glad I'm not alone!! I was wondering where all the other impatient people were!!! Lol! The wait is seriously the most painfully distracting thing!!! Haha I'm opposite of you guys "low" grades (so like 3.55) and crazy amount of paid exp hours. And in my interview they asked me why I had a poor GPA saying that exp wasn't everything! Lol they were clearly trying to rattle me a bit! I defended myself though saying the way I got those hours was working almost full time while going to school!
Yeah did u see how the interview packet letter was worded though? It said one week after deliberations were complete AFTER all interviews were done...so it's kind of open ended since we don't know when deliberations were complete lol!!
Looks like letters were snail mail last year...but some people requested email.
Ugh I'm goin crazy. 😵

I feel like schools love to see all of that experience though!! It does seem like WSU might focus on grades a bit more just because of the tier system but I have No clue. I have loads of animal experience, community work and leadership but I'm lacking in direct vet experience (I have plenty to know the profession, but nothing compared to everyone else) so that scares me. Yeah I think they just try to rattle every one a little bit to see if they will doubt themselves or stand up for themselves… in my head I was like "EXCUSE ME? LOW? You try undergrad now a days!!!" An A is "standard" everyone wants the A, you get a B and it feels like an F! haha sometimes I just wish all these old school admissions peeps could try school NOW, when the C and B is no longer the average…an A is the average…and you're just expected to get it! And one C destroys your gpa! Back in their day they probably felt so smart and elite getting straight As, now it just feels expected or you're a failure…lol ridiculous!

Did you just do prerequisites? (Wish I was on top of stuff early enough to apply that way!) what other schools did you apply to? I'm the opposite, I was banking on getting in this year so reapplying would be totally unexpected for me (not anymore, now I know what kind of game I'm playing lol!). I really want to hear back by Wednesday. I thought all emails/ letters would go out at the same time! I guess not.

Yup since I was already working as a LA tech when I decided I wanted to go back to school to then go to vet school, I started with pre-reqs and then figured I'd apply as soon as I could then finish out degree if it took more than one or two rounds. I'm glad I did it this way except now I'm sitting in like boring freshman classes like "general psych" and "drawing" hahahaha but better than having to focus on crazy hard classes while waiting! I mean I'm in calc and physics as well but they're not bad.

Well hopefully it will pay off and you will get in the first time!! I feel like there is a good chance with WSU once you've gotten an interview, because they have only about 50 OOS interviewees for 35 spots which isn't horrible odds.

The guy that interviewed me said that they would be interviewing about 50 students for OOS positions (I assume not including the WICHE states or other contracted states like Idaho and Montana and Utah).

I know!! I feel very proud that I got interviewed. After visiting, WSU became my top choice! I can't believe how great they seem to be about getting 1st and 2nd yr students into the hospital! So you are a first year student currently?

I actually was not expecting to like the place as much as I do! Purdue impressed me less than WSU which I was surprised about because of Purdue's name/ reputation.

Definitely not bashing any school. There really aren't any bad schools in the U.S. but on that same token, the ones that have the "rep" aren't necessarily better. Everyone has a school that fits them the best.

I learned that I couple weeks ago Abney. I felt like I really belonged at WSU. Everyone was soooo sweet and cheerful and all of the opportunities and facilities impressed me and it just felt like a great fit. Not saying that I wouldn't be honored to go to any school but let's just say, if I have my choice, I know where I'll be going!! Really hoping for good news this week!!

Oh my gosh guys. 2nd snow day in a row tomorrow! This is torture! School is the best distraction... I remember the good old days when I liked snow days. Now it means more mailman stalking/ compulsive email checking with nothing to distract me!! Is anyone else on the brink of insanity?

Omg. I actually want snow days. We never get them because apparently we're too used to snow. It would give me a chance to catch up on things I need to get done...and prepare for my Minnesota interview on Friday.

Yes yes yes I AM on the brink of iNsAnItY!!!!!! since I go to a small undergrad (super close with the entire science dept and all it's students) and I'm the only pre-vet senior (all the rest are freshman)...everyone asks me everyday "have you heard yet?????" Lol it just is a constant reminder that I haven't checked my email in the past 5 min....i cant focus on anything else if I tried!!! Lol!! Ahhhhh!!! 😱
