WSU/USU c/o 2018 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hollista and Mysterymare....so sorry that you didn't get the acceptances that you were hoping for. In being granted a spot on the waitlist, there's still a chance you could still be admitted. Keep the flame of hope alive. I very much hope to see you in August for COLE and orientation. I look forward to seeing you here on SDN, and hopefully Pullman this summer. Best of success!!
Thanks for the uplifting words! I hope to see you there as well! I'll hold a little piece of hope for this year.

Waistlisted 🙁 This is the second year in a row for me and I felt this was my best interview out of the bunch so far. Does not bode well for my others.
Sorry to hear 🙁 I felt mine went well too. I'm starting to think the interviews either mean less than I thought, or I don't have a good feel of how I did in them. We'll hold out hope together in the wait list club!

Yeah I definitely plan to ask each school for an application review so I can know exactly where they would like to see improvement. I was wondering whether or not I should rewrite my PS since it caught the attention of 3 of the schools this time around. Now I just need to find some successful applicant friends to chat with lol! I am definitely ready to go get a second job at a vet clinic if I don't get in and do tons of shadowing, research, and random volunteering etc. I honestly think I lost some points for "veterinary experience" because I made a late-ish decision on vet school (I didn't think it was possible for me because of my allergies but found out otherwise later on!) so I really only had ~200 hrs (though I have tons of animal experience!).
Wow we do have quite a while to wait huh..
Yeah. It's like a giant game of chess. You can't move X piece until Y is moved. It's a pain in the butt.

I actually used pretty much the same PS years 1 and 2. But I think, I really do, that my PS that I wrote last year helped me stand out. It was different than your standard. I am more than happy to share if you ever wanted to read it.

I would love to read it! I'll PM you my email if that is the best way? Also, would you mind reading mine from this year if you find the time? I thought it was unique but I can't have enough opinions!!

waitlisted IS............is there still hope?

I was also waitlisted, found out about 2wks ago through change in portal status. I don't appreciate that they wait list everyone that they interview who is not accepted. Feels kinda like a cop out 🙁

Me too. I'm so bummed. My interview went so well. I was feeling so hopeful. Was really not expecting this. I know I should still be happy, and be hopeful but I'm just not. 🙁

I would love to know the same. I want to know how big the OOS wait list is. That would at least make me feel like I know (somewhat) my chances. Anyone know how big the alternate list usually is for OOS?
I am focusing on planning my next year but it would be a great surprise to get in this year.

I just got accepted and will be starting in August. I've been looking around at housing, but being from New Mexico, it's hard to tell if the places are nice. Does anyone have any suggestions on housing? I'm looking for a 1-2 bedroom house or apartment and it must be pet (dog) friendly. I would really appreciate any help or suggestions! Thanks!

I was OOS last year and waitlisted. Seems like they did the same thing, LOTS of people on wait list (my guess is everyone who was interviewed that they did not accept). And when I asked they said they were 'very happy' with the group they had. Sorry I know it's not great news I know it's better knowing than not knowing. :annoyed:

Did you have any estimation of just how many people on the OOS list? My interviewer told me that they would be interviewing 50 people for OOS but now I'm thinking that was just people HE would be interviewing or something... So did you get in this year as OOS?

I am a long-time lurker, but I had such a vet-school news day that I thought I should finally post (hi CloverBug!). I got my waitlist letter in the mail today, and I was disappointed since I thought the interview went well. On the positive side, I got accepted to a different school today, so that made things better. I really liked WSU though.

Many schools will tell you how many people they accepted/wait listed if you call/email them and ask.

Hey! I'm sorry you got waitlisted too but yay on another acceptance! Hopefully it's somewhere your hubby won't mind moving to as well. Good luck on your journey.

#yoloswag. Sorry I'm pretty drunk. I'm turning down wsu so good luck everyone else!!!

Well congrats on getting accepted somewhere!!! I am still waiting for my official letter about being alternate status. Feel proud you got in somewhere!!!

Oh wonderful!! I think I will give Barbara a call once I get my official letter to ask. I'll let you guys know if I'm the first one to pester her XD

Got my official alternate letter.... 🙁
Let me know what Barbara says!!

:/ i was originally a bit optimistic about my chances when I got my alternate letter but reading the thread is discouraging! do they really put all interviewed students on waitlist if they didnt get accepted? anyone who talks to Barbara about the size of the waitlist, let us know!

DAMNIT!!!! Alternate. 🙁
that makes 2 waitlists and no acceptances. Still waiting on UPenn but def not hopeful now.

Awwww, don't give up hope. You never know... there are always crazy people, like me, who turn down admission or go to a different school. People change their mind...when will you know for sure? It would be nice if someone could post how many OOS were interviewed and how many spots are actually there.

It's looking that way. One thing I also wonder is if they actually use an alternate for each person who turns the school down. Or do they let the class size shrink sometimes? I want to call Barbara once I get my letter (still waiting) but I also feel like I'm always pestering her!! Do you think that's bad if I call about it?

I dunno if you guys have already seen this from the c/o 2017 thread, but they pretty much had the same discussion your having here. One post says:

"Alrighty, so I emailed Barbara and this is what she told me when I asked her the questions:

"Firstly, is it possible to know my numerical rank on the wait list? Is there usually an average number of students that decline their offers each year? Lastly, how much after April 15th are most student alternates contacted about a spot opening up? "

Her responses:

"1st we dont rank our alternates. The reason being because we made our first round offers and now all the alternates are in a pool of their own and will be ranked only among alternate students.
2nd each year is different with alternates. Some years we go down the list and offer students and some years we don't offer any.
3rd If we need to offer students on the alternate list we usually do it within a couple of weeks of the April 15th deadline. "

Doesn't answer all your questions, but hopefully this helps!

Thanks! That helps a bit. Still so much uncertainty though!! I just wish they would tell us more. That is weird that some years they don't call any alternates.. I hope this isn't one of those years..

Got my alternate letter (delivered yesterday). Really wish they gave you more info on the process!! I'll probably call Barbara tomorrow or Tuesday to find out how many alternates there are and the average number that get called.

I'm looking to buy a 2-3 bedroom manufactured home in Pullman with a fenced yard for my dog, and would want to rent 1-2 rooms to fellow 1st year vet students, so I'd like to poll you!
First of all- does sharing a pet friendly trailer close to campus (not campus vista though) for ~$350/m sound appealing to anyone?
If so:
-Would it be less appealing to live with 2 classmates vs just one (me, a female)? (Trying to decide between 2/3 bdr)
-If it were a 3 bedroom, would it be a deal breaker if there were only one bathroom?

*Also, if anyone has any tips/info about buying manufactured homes (timing etc) I'd love know!

For those of you who are current WSU students, I'm looking to be sold on going to WSU over a few other places but I have a few questions that will factor into my decision:
1) How would you compare the availability of (specifically) grants and scholarships at WSU compared to what you've heard at other universities? Like my current undergraduate institution touts handing a lot of money out to students, but once you're here you realize it's pretty much an all or none sort of scenario. I've done some research and seen the rough numbers WSU has posted on their website, but in your experiences how would you say it's distributed? Do a lot of people get scholarship money from outside the university as well?
2) If you were accepted to other institutions, what made you pick WSU? Are there things you thought were awesome that turned out to be "meh"? Is there something most people don't mention that you think is a huge plus?
3) Do you feel your time there is giving you connections to places or does it feel pretty insular?
4) Should I visit the campus before deciding? (I guess the answer is probably yes.)

*Also, if anyone has any tips/info about buying manufactured homes (timing etc) I'd love know!

Around now is about the time. I'd say things especially pick up in March. People who are leaving like to have things all done by graduation. You'll be out of luck if you start thinking about finding a place in May. Well, perhaps not completely out of luck but you won't have the best selection.

Check Craigslist, also ask Barb/Karen if any students are selling. You can use a realtor if you want.

Honestly, a 2 vs 3 bedroom is no big deal to sell. Two things matter: how crappy it is (or isn't) and how close to campus. I've never heard of anyone in Golden Hills having problems selling, especially if you keep the place decent.

Depending on your luck, a double wide may be harder to sell just because the price point will be higher.

I had a 2008 single wide in Moscow in Robinson (nicest park in town). I put it up for sale myself in March and sold it within a week - to another vet student to boot.

My best friend had a 1990 something single wide in Golden Hills (nicest park in Pullman), used a realtor and sold it within 2 days. Also to another vet student and in March. Both of ours were priced in the mid 30k range.

The people who had more difficulty selling had problem trailers (older or in need of repairs) or were further out - Albion, etc. Newer trailers in good shape seem to move quickly.

There are some super cheap ones that people will take -we're talking $5k or less. There's something for every price point. Just keep in mind you'll have to live with it for 4 years. I know classmates who had older trailers with busted pipes, leaky roofs, etc that all cost quite a bit to fix and are a huge hassle. Might not be worth the initial savings upfront.

There really isn't a way to predict it. The only reason they'll call alternates is if someone decides not to attend WSU. So when (if) spots open up that's when they'll contact the waitlist. I'm sorry. I know what this is like and how ulcer inducing it can be.

1) Unless you're in the top few percent, doing something special interest that's well funded, or just uniquely lucky, the scholarship money generally isn't enough to make a big difference overall.

They say that everyone at some point in the program gets a scholarship. Which is true. Over four years I got three CVM scholarships from WSU; all my friends got at least one or more. They weren't game changing amounts though. I think my total was a little over 2.5k.

Students in the top ~10 percent seem to do well, but since I was relatively average that didn't apply to me. I know they also did a whole year of tuition for 1 special person in 3rd year or something. And there were a few other very large amounts, some were field specific (LA, research, etc). So if you're one of those lucky people, then it's great for you. But most of the class ended up with a few thousand here and there.

So to answer the question - it's evenly distributed in modest amounts to everyone and then a few lucky people get bigger scholarships.

I did get a good amount of scholarship money outside of WSU but I don't think that's very common.

2) I was accepted to 2 schools and wait listed at 1. I picked WSU because it was IS and that was the bottom line for me. Everyone has a different definition of "meh", so you'll have to make that call for yourself. Aspects of the program I might not have like may appeal to other people and vice versa.

3) The vet community itself is relatively small, so you can make many connections while at vet school. It's really what you make of it though. Two people will come out of school with a different network of contacts based on who they interacted with and what they did.

4) Yes, visit the campus. They'll set you up with a tour, let you sit in on classes and talk to current students. Do not let anything you hear on the internet form your opinion about a school. I'm not going to "sell" you on WSU and really no one should. Your own feelings, logic and pocketbook should do that.

EDIT - I have an old scholarship award program somewhere, listing the different scholarships and the amounts. If you're intensely curious I can dig that up. But generally most of them are less than 2k, there are many that are less than 1k, a handful at 5-9k, and the one rare full tuition for a year.

This. All of it. Thanks, Lailanni for some excellent advice.

They like to keep some mystery in the process to keep us on edge 😉 lol!!

Well it's less about mystery and more about the fact that they can't offer alternate spots unless someone declines their spot. The alternate list is pulled from in order to occupy vacancies left by people who were given initial acceptance and chose, for whatever reason, not to attend that school.

I know I was just being a smartass lol. It just feels like they are trying to torture us, but I know that's not their actual intentions. Just hoping I get lucky!

Hello to you too Lab Vet! I will be the brown hair green-eyed tall guy 😛, that should exclude like 90% of the people there haha

Yay hopefully you do too Mysterymare! I am IS, south of Seattle.

Lucky getting into your IS!! Good work! I will be the happiest girl ever if I am able to haul my ponies all the way from KS to make a home at WSU. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

I will cross them for you as well! :] If I may ask, why not K-State? Pure curiosity.

Thank you!! Ahh, K-State... I tried :/ I honestly was surprised to get my rejection following an interview there... Really liked that school (and the price IS)

Aww, I am sorry :/ I was just curious because I applied there so was just wondering your thoughts on it! But WSU is better so hopefully you get in there! ;]
