I was looking around on a couple of threads and it seems to me that cases that General Surgeons get are usually abdomen related. Anything not related to the abdomen seems to be taken by the specialties.
Hi!
I was just wondering if a step 1 score of 227 was a "good enough" score to be obtain a surgical residency at university programs (or at least an interview...). I was a disappointed in my score, but it is what it is and life goes on!
Any suggestions on how to strengthen my application as I...
Hey guys, this is my first time on sdn. I am trying to apply for general surgery residency next year and wanted to gauge the strength of my application/what are realistic expectations for where I could land.

Hello everyone,
By July I will be a final year Medical Student in Europe.
How is a Sub-I in Plastic Surgery (with a focus on Pediatric Plastics - Craniofacial Surgery) and therefore a pretty good LoR going to help me match into General Surgery Residency? I am more interested in following a...
I am a first year D.O student currently interested in General Surgery. I understand that Gen-Surge is a competitive specialty, and perhaps even more challenging for an osteopath to match into. Does anyone know (or is anyone) a D.O that matched into surgery and can offer advice on how to study...

I am an American Medical Student who is applying into an advanced program requiring a general surgery preliminary program.
I was hoping to live in Chicago for my preliminary program, but only received one preliminary interview for Chicago, but many in cities along the West Coast.

could anyone shed some light on the differences? I am thinking more of academic programs (so both will have the extra two research years).
What is the difference in employement possibilities? Licensing? Will I be expected to do more general surgery procedures after being hired post fellowship...

I am a preliminary general surgery candidate focused on acquiring a residency position in dermatology. I am an applicant this year through ERAS and may match (I hope so!). However, I have a dearth of dermatology research. Whether I match into a 2019 PGY-2 spot or not, I would like to pursue...
Hi! I'm from California but go to med school on the east coast. I'm hoping to come home for residency and am a pretty competitive applicant, but don't know much about these programs beyond their websites and heresay from people at least three times removed (e.g. "I've heard people say it used to...
Anyone know of a better way of finding out which programs have either no or low minimum COMLEX score for AOA general surgery other than emailing/calling the programs directly? Thanks
This is my first time posting in SDN, so please let me know if I'm breaking any rules.
Question for all of the gen surg applicants here. Obviously as a third year medical student, it is too early for me to have be assessed accurately as an applicant. But I wanted to see what you guys thought...
Hi all! I didn't see an interview trade/swap thread for this year and am currently in desperate need of one so I thought it'd be helpful to get this started.
Also: Just to keep things clean, maybe it would be a good idea to edit/delete posts as your requests get resolved? I'm new to SDN :D
Hey guys.
I'm a med student from NZ who has just got a yes from both Imperial College and King's College for my final year elective. I am not trying to decide where to go!
The electives are Gen Surg in St. Mary's Hospital or or O & G in Guy's Hospital.
I would really like a plcae with nice...
Hi all,
I searched the existing threads and I haven't found anything about this. I was wondering if anyone heard anything or knows anything about the general surgery residency program at Mayo Phoenix, other than what's on FREIDA. Any students/residents there? What did you think of the program...
I'm only a high school sophomore so correct me if I am wrong please, but I believe that the three I have listed are the things you do right after graduating from medical school if you're planning to become a trauma surgeon. Even if you're not specifically going for becoming a trauma surgeon...

What would stop my program from not signing me to a PGY2 contract and taking one of the undesignated prelims from my program instead (if they liked one of them better)? Am I still competing for a job?
Thanks.
i'm a minor and a freshman in highschool. i know its early to be wondering what i'll be wanting to do in the next 8 years but i want to be prepared. I know what trauma surgery is but i need a clear understanding. and i'm choosing between general surgery and trauma. what do i need to do or be...
Hi All,
I've been reading SDN since for about 15 years but this is my first post.
I have a contract renegotiation coming up. Can someone help me with the most recent MGMA or fair market values for wRVU/yr, $/wRVU, total reimbursement etc.? I am the only (general or otherwise) surgeon in a...
Good Morning everyone,
I'm looking for advice about my situation and would appreciate any input.
Im stuck between step 2CK score on time vs 3LORs on time. I'm going to try and have both ready but just in case that doesn't work out, which one is more important for an IMG. Thanks !
I'm an IMG ECFMG certified, USMLE scores: 251, 267, CS pass 1st attempt, 4 months of US clinical experience.
Was late to apply for last match, I'm looking for a position in prelim PGY1 in surgery, medicine, or any specialty. will apply to radiology next year

Now that the official interview invites thread is dying down, I thought this would be an appropriate time to solicit candid opinions about your interview experiences at different programs.
I also wholeheartedly welcome any anonymous program reviews from current residents. I am aware of...
The program had some problems with their trauma director, Dr. Larry Gentilello (who previously was let go from suing UTSW/Parkland successfully for billing fraud). The surgery department ended up signing a 12 physician no-trust vote to fire the newly hired trauma director. However, somehow the...

I hate to scatter the main 2016-2017 General Surgery interview invite/rejection list, but I think it would be helpful for IMGs to know where they stand among other IMGs since we have that extra filter to deal with.
Please enter the following under the corresponding state:

Hi all,
I hope you don't mind us posting this, but it's very relevant to people on this forum. UCL Press have just released an open access textbook, Textbook of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, that can be downloaded for free in both PDF and app format (print is also available for sale). It...
I'm currently in the middle of my surgical clerkship, and I'm falling in love with this specialty. I enjoy nearly every aspect from clinic to consultations to post op management: but, there is nothing as gratifying as the OR. I wake up every morning tired, but with a smile. The problem is I have...
Thank you for visiting this post.

Hi friends,
I saw some posts about people not having any LORs from surgeons, but wanted to pursue a surgical residency. I only have letters from surgeons (3 general, 1 vascular), and I want to apply to general surgery residencies. Will this lack of variety be a problem? Should I try to obtain...
