After my previous post, I dug up a powerpoint that I obtained from a couple presentations I went to by Dr. Muraskas (one of the deans). These #s are from the entering class of 08. THought they may be interesting/releiving to some.

Total AMCAS: 10142
Prelim rejections: 1227
Ineligible apps: 261
Incomplete: 2739
Total complete Apps: 5915
Interviewed: 572
Declined Interview: 103
Not Accepted: 5240

Matriculated class: 145 (45% IL res, 10% URM)
Direct offers: 236
Alternate offers: 52
Total withdrawn after acceptance: 143

He had a whole bunch of slides about URMs and their increasing presence at the school, 10 African Americans in the class was a new record.

They have a "Screen Team" that screens and selects applicatnts with a GPA >2.5 and an MCAT 21-23 for an interview. They refer to this as the "Tuba Player"

% of class coming off wait list:
2006: 33%
2007: 19%
2008: 26%

Did anyone else never receive a follow up to the initial CBC e-mail? It said that [email protected] would be contacting us, but they never contacted me.

I never received a follow up from centeri either. I contacted them and they told me that Loyola is not participating. I contacted Loyola and they said that they are doing a criminal background check. They only way I can reconsile this is to think that perhaps Loyola is using a different service and they were included on the AMCAS email by mistake.

thanks for this info! i don't suppose you have similar info for any other schools?

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping that those of you who have already interviewed or have been accepted might be able to share some information about the sources of funding at Loyola.

Do they mostly just help with loan support, do they have grants/scholarships available? Trying to get a sense of how expensive it would be to attend here....

Thanks!

I just called Loyola University about an hour ago to check on the status of my application. they told me everything was completed and that I was still under review. The guy mentioned a "stack of papers" waiting for me... it sounded... but maybe he meant that Ive sent in a stack of paper. I was told to call back the end of January if I hadn't heard of anything.

I was just wondering, how are you informed that you are being invited to an interview? I'm really hoping that the stack of papers means that they are about to send me an interview invite through the mail.. but I very much doubt that. So far I'm pretty much screwed for med school because of a lower GPA/MCAT than average because I had to go to tough Case Western.... so it's nice to hope that Loyola would like me.

Thanks!

No, sorry. I only have this because I attended Loyola undergrad and Dr. Muraskas came to give several speeches to pre-meds and honor students.

I was just wondering, how are you informed that you are being invited to an interview?

I am 95% sure that you are informed via a phone call from a dean. From everyone I've talked to, and earlier in this thread, it has all been through phone. My interview invite was through the phone as well, but the interview was the next day. In regards to your status, he probably meant that he has a stack of applications to go through and it's possible that you're in it.

You made a whole new thread with this question in it already and got some solid answers. No need to ask here, too. 🙂

Hi,

I don't mean to sound desperate but is anyone else waiting on an interview invite? Is Loyola a school that silently rejects applicants without notice and after what time should I lose hope of an interview -- February? Would it be worthwhile to send updates like work/grades or will that not have a bearing on an interview decision? Since I already have been accepted elsewhere, I don't know if I am being too desperate and should just withdraw from schools I haven't heard from...

Thanks for reading this and thanks for any help you all can give!

Pinky, from what I have heard, the interviews that Loyola gives out after the new year are for waitlist spots. I'm sure they are still offering interviews, but I don't know how much longer that will go on. I would call them if I were you. I do know that they accept a good number more than matriculate, so a lot of folks get in off of the waitlist. Also, there's absolutely no reason to withdraw from a school just because you haven't heard from them yet, especially if it's a school you'd like to go to.

Call and send updates! If for nothing else then to possibly get accepted somewhere cheaper that you may like just as much (Loyola's probably the lowest of all I applied to at 37k).

Hey, has anyone who interviewed in December hear back yet? At my interview they said they were meeting this Monday (the 5th) and would call with acceptances and mail waitlists/rejections after that.

Perhaps I should be waiting for the mail instead of a phone call..then again, reading previous posts it seems they aren't the speediest of all schools.

I interviewed in December as well, but Dean Jones didn't tell me that they make calls. He said that they will send letters with the decision, and that those would go out on the 6th. I felt pretty good about my interviews, but I guess you never know. I'm crossing my fingers for us! 🙂

Yep! I got a call from the dean of the admissions committee notifying me of a my acceptance on Tuesday morning, 1/5/09 (I missed the call, so it was a voicemail).

Good luck everyone!

Monkeygirl, did you ever get a letter from Loyola? I think they sent them on Tuesday, but mine hasn't come. I wish it had, but I guess I can wait until Monday. I applied MD/PhD, and I was told that they usually waitlist us mudphud applicants until the MD/PhD committee makes a decision near the end of this month. But regardless, I'm looking forward to getting mail from them.

Welcome & congrats!

Have they been rejecting people yet?

I turned in my secondary in late Sept and know my LORs were in around then, too. However, probably about a month ago I got an email from Loyola saying one of my LORs had never been received. I called the letter writer as soon as I got the email, and he said he'd mail another one that day. I haven't checked my status w/Loyola via telephone because my work schedule on Thursdays makes it near impossible. Do you think it would be okay if I called today (Friday)? I'm afraid now, too, that waiting for that letter put my application wayyyy back and at a disadvantage. Bleh.

I interviewed in December and got a phone call of an acceptance on tuesday (yay). However, I rember that they told me that they normaly mail all decisions via snail mail (including acceptances) but will call if you ask them to. Since I live in Florida, I specifically asked them to call me so I wouldn't have to wait a week to get a letter (and I still haven't gotten the letter yet either).

I am also a mudphud applicant and interviewed in December for it. I did receive an offer of acceptance for the MD program this week. I remember that Dr. Kini told me that they would tell me of the MD/PhD decision in like early February. As far as waitlisting goes, the only thing he said was that if I was waitlisted for the MD program, they may be able to get me off the waitlist if the PhD side likes me (luckily I don't need to worry about this). Don't worry if you haven't gotten a letter yet, because I haven't, even though I was called by the dean on Tuesday because I requested him to.

yeah, I got a call from them on tues morning also....but I accidentally hung up on them!!!😱......but it was ok, and I called them back and was notified of an acceptance!😀....still no letter yet either though.

Hey Bcblazer, I've been out of town all week so I don't know if I got a letter yet! I was hoping for a phone call, obviously, but I feel better knowing that they might not always call with acceptances. Hopefully news in one form or another will come soon.

Good luck to everyone!

Congrats to everyone who's received an acceptance this week!

Imbored, what was your impression of the dual degree program at Loyola? I was impressed with everything, except for the fact that they only give a stipend 5 of the 7 years. I know it's not a big deal in the long run, but if another school is offering 7 years of stipend, it's kind of hard to turn that down. Do you think you'll end up there if you get accepted into the dual degree program, or are you leaning towards other places?

I'm not positive, but I've heard that Loyola is one of those silent rejection schools - probably because it seems like it is just one guy (the dean) doing everything himself. I wish you luck though! I'm also still waiting to hear anything, I was complete mid-october.

Yeah, I was kinda annoyed that they didn't fund the first two years, because most schools (even non-MSTP) fund all 8 years. Unfortunetly for me, I haven't been as successful in this application season as I thought I would be, and Loyola is my first acceptance so far. But the thing is, if a slightly more prestigious school that funds all 8 years comes along and gives me an offer, ill probably have to take that other offer. At least it will be free tuition the first two years, but usually MD-PhD students shouldn't really have to take any loans out at all since they loose about 4 years of a residents salary. Other than that, I liked the school. Though I wish there was a little bit more research there (although Dean Jones told me that they are starting a new research initiative there and may be building a new research building soon).

FYI to those waiting....I got my letter from them today and I am in Florida. Good luck everyone!

So, pretty much any interview from now on is for waitlist?

Loyola interviews till the end of April. So, I would assume that interview invites at this point are still a good sign.

I'm still waiting...anyone know if Loyola looks at LOIs?

Yikes. Good luck to you, too! Have you heard anything new?

nope, I haven't heard a single thing from Loyola. I was complete beginning of October. Has anyone heard anything from Loyola lately?

I'm rooting for you HaveHope, we have pretty similar stats!

so, does Loyola send out rejections or do they just let you know everyone is rejected if you haven't heard from them by like March?

You only get status updates if you call. I just did wondering if I''m still in the game for an interview. The receptionist said "You are still being reviewed by the committee. That's a good thing! We interview till April so you can still get that call."

Anyone try calling recently? I basically just want to hear SOMEONE got rejected so I know my still "under review" is somewhat meaningful, haha.

Pinky, from what I have heard, the interviews that Loyola gives out after the new year are for waitlist spots.

I can say with 100% certainty that this is untrue.

Hello all

I've been under review since I called back at the beginning of December. Everytime I do call they always say to call back in a month to check if I don't hear from them first. So I hope this means there is still a chance ..... Anyone think any different?

i called today. ive been reviewed and will be re-reviewed... this was a change from last time. i wrote an loi.

I love Loyola Thursdays

I got an interview invite today!! Just to let you all know, they are still doing invites for early February for real spots...

Hope this gives some hope 😉

Hey for those who have already interviewed: What time did your day get over? Did Loyola help provide any transportation to the airport?

My packet explaining this stuff is in the mail but I really want to book my flight...

Thanks!

Oh and one more question ... how big of a role does religion play in the actual medical education? Looking at the class schedule I see time blocked out for mass and classes like Catholicism and Health Care ... just curious...

When I interviewed in December, my day was over shortly after lunch, but I think I just got lucky. They tell you to be prepared to stay until 4 or 5. It really depends on the schedule of your interviewers.

No, Loyola doesn't help out with any of the transportation.

Since I'm not a student, I can't answer your last question well, but I got the impression that the Catholicism doesn't affect the medical education much. It does, however, make them more service oriented and focused on treating the whole person rather than just the disease. Most of the students aren't Catholics.

Does Loyola leave a message if you miss their call for an interview invite?

Yep.....when they called I was riding my bike to school, and they left a message. They also sent an email right away as well asking me to call them.

I wasnt done until like 4:30. It depends on who you are interviewing with because the other applicant with me was done at like 2. He had his two interviews back-to-back in the morning, while I had one in the morning, and one at 3. So I would book a late flight if I were you....and try to get it at midway.

And I didn't get the impression either that Catholicism plays any role in the operation of the school. They just value the Jesuit ideals....i.e. holistic approaches in patient care. Although one of the deans is a priest in addition to being a physician...which I thought was quite interesting.

Yeah, my day ended around 3 or so. It all depends on when your actual interviews are scheduled. Some applicants had their last interview at like 9 or 10am, while my last one was around 1 or 2pm. Either way, booking a flight for no earlier than 5:30 or 6pm should give you enough time to get to the airport. And both O'hare and Midway are about equal distance from loyola so just choose which ever one you can get the cheapest flight at. And no, they dont provide transportation. If you stay at the Hampton Inn, there is a free shuttle in the morning to the school, but to and from the airport I had to use a taxi/van.

Does Loyola leave a message if you miss their call for an interview invite?

I missed my call and they did not leave me a message. But I called back later and found out that I was accepted. So either way, a call is good news.

i just got an interview invite today. very excited!

Congratas, kac! Good luck on your interview. I really liked Loyola when I interviewed/toured.

Not quite. It's a Jesuit school, which doesn't just mean they value Jesuit values. It's Catholic school/hospital, which founded by the Jesuits (a teaching order of Catholic priests.). This implies, for example, that the hospital won't perform abortions.

The doctor/priest you mentioned is a great guy, by the way. I talked with him at length on my interview day.

It certainly seemed to me that while Loyola is a Jesuit institution, they are not looking to convert anyone. If anything, their patient-centered focus and compassionate style of medicine was one of the most attractive things about the school.

Good luck to all who will interview soon! You will love it.
