I was just wondering if anyone else got this...

I interviewed last friday (12/12) and was told by Ruiz that we would hear back on the committee decision this coming friday (12/19). Being overly excited, I checked my status page today because I know they met, and I have a "highly desirable- december decision" status. Does this mean they reviewed me already or have they not gotten to my file? I guess I'm just confused because it is December...

That's odd, because that's what people put on hold get, but it seems kinda silly to do that if they are going to review all holds by Dec 24th...

I bet it means they reviewed your file already. I am also in the december decision group (I interviewed in November). They told me they will reevaluate our apps. this friday or later (they told me that if I wanted to send in an update to do it before friday) and they will update our status on the 23rd. Hope that helps and good luck!

thanks for the feedback!
I guess time will tell...

and good luck to you as well skiqueen!

Wasn't there supposed to be a committee meeting tonight?

Are you saying that the meeting today (12/17) wasn't to decide on the deferred applicants?

That's essentially what I was told on the phone. She certainly made it sounds like our apps wouldn't be looked at again until friday or later.

yes, that is what I understood. I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that the 12/17 meeting was about the interviewees in December, and the 12/19 meeting will be about all deferred applicants.

Hm, interesting. I wonder how they'll have a meeting on 12/19 since that's also an interview day..

We were told when I interviewed on Friday that deferred applicants would be reviewed on the 23rd. I don't think they are reviewing anyone this Friday. Good luck to all of those who are deferred!!

Yes I think that would make more sense! I'm sorry, I think I was mistaken when I said they were meeting on 12/19.

That makes more sense. Hopefully, they'll still update the decisions on the site on the 23rd. It'll either be a great early Christmas present, or.. well, let's not think about the alternative.

i just sent my secondary in recently, hopefully it is not too late in the game 🙂 keep your fingers crossed for me guys, I've had some bad luck lately.

It's nearly over... they updated the admissions page yesterday, and 725/750 interviews have been offered with 85% of admissions offers already made. The dream is in its death throes, but it was a long shot anyway. Too bad.

does anyone know if the applicants receiving interviews 650-725 have been notified?

There's been 2 batches of acceptances since 11/12. I'm really surprised no one on SDN has been accepted since then. Just a random thought..

Also, the admissions office is closed from 12/24 to 1/5, so hopefully we do hear back on the 23rd.

I was accepted this past Wednesday (the 17th) after interviewing on Friday Dec. 12th. I was pleasantly surprised as they told us we would be notified on the 19th, not the 17th.

I hope all of you get the same good news that I got!

Wow, quick turnaround. Congratulations!

Interviews Offered: 725 of 750
Admissions Offers made: 85%

*The admission office will be closed December 24-January 5*

I assume that the remaining 15% or so will be given out to the hold people, and that they aren't factoring in waitlisters. Even so, I guess I thought that there would be more spots given out in December...

For those people on hold, they have updated their site and i found that i am deferred to march, which is most disappointing thing I have experienced so far in the application process(worse than rejection)

i'm sorry mcc5 🙁 But it's better than a rejection/waitlist!

Please don't think I am trying to be rude, as I received the same message, but isn't it essentially a rejection/waitlist? I haven't heard much about students that were rejected post-interview, or students that were waitlisted post-interview. If you guys know something I don't, namely that very few students are deferred and most are accepted (*Please God*) then whew... but I feel like it would make more sense to do the majority of rejection in march rather than in october and december. It kind of stinks, because Michigan was far and away my top choice.

Well, you're right...they don't reject post-interview, but they have deferments and waitlists. I think remaining on the deferred list until March is much better than being waitlisted because 1. you have a chance of being accepted in March 2. If you are waitlisted in March, you're probably higher on the waitlist than those that were waitlisted immediately after their interview.

Wow this is such BULL****. I can't believe michigan would push decisions (for some of us) all the way to March, when they told us that we would have a decision by december. Honestly, I agree with you mcc5--I'd rather be rejected. My positive impression of the school is quickly withering.

calm down. Things change all the time. UW-Madison told us on first interview day that we'd hear around Oct 20ths or so, turns out even the instate people only heard on Nov 20th, and the out of state people might not hear back AT ALL until Feb/March/April or something, not a single oos acceptance, I feel bad for them.

UMichigan has a good of an admissions system as it can get, very transparent, but my guess is they had to many applicants and offered out too many interviews too quickly. Their secondary deadline is 12/30 and they already offered out almost all interviews/acceptances, so that is why they probably want to hold off a little bit.

Yeah, I'm a bit bummed myself. I'm an in-stater and I interviewed in September. Sometimes I wish that I had interviewed later, so that I'd have been a bit more experienced... Oh well, no use grumbling about it 🙄

Anyone get accepted or waitlisted off of the hold list?

I'm in the same situation as you. And I've spoken to friends and students who've gone through the process, and you're correct that this is a waitlist. Not essentially, but IS. Because by March they will have reached 100%. I know that very few people get picked in December, and I guess we weren't lucky enough. Best of luck.

I wonder if anyone is accepted in Dec. If you didn't interview well and your other stats aren't outlandishly stellar, you may not garner enough points to go into the admit pile. I guess that is what happened to me. The admission process at Michigan is so logical that I think they rarely take personal factor (e.g. in state) into consideration until the very end. At least we have so many people to commiserate with, but if you got in, let us know and congrats to you!

It says that they preferentially interview in staters (it is a public school).

Is anyone's arriving at the Detroit airport on January 8th around 6-7pm and returning to the airport after the interview day on January 9th? It is exponentially cheaper to get a charter from Detroit to Ann Arbor if there are multiple people... I figured I would post here 'just in case' someone has similar travel plans and wants to save some $$. Good luck to everyone.

Hey Guys,

So I have a question that I hope some of you will be able to answer honestly. I was just accepted to Weill Cornell in NYC and I am SUPER happy since it's always been one of my dream schools. I have always had a list of 5 schools that I've dreamed of going to and Weill is one of them. My dilemma (and in no way am I saying that this is a "BAD" thing) is that I have an interview scheduled for UMich Med in mid january. I am trying to decide whether or not it is worth going to. What do you guys think? I applied to Michigan because it's an amazing school, but it was never on my top 5. My premed advisor says that I should spend the money and go visit because the school is amazing and it might surprise me. What would you guys do? I want to decide this ASAP so that I can open up an interview slot in case I decide to cancel.

Thanks!

If you're in state I would go, they have significant financial aid packages. Otherwise, if you are happy with Cornell, I think it would be understandable not to go. It is an awesome school though...

I got an automated happy birthday email from the U Mich office. They're so nice 😀

To clarify, by charter I meant the bus-shuttle service they recommend...

How did other people get to Ann Arbor from Detroit? Any suggestions?

Dude, I would go since UMich is such a good school. The interview day is very different from the other top schools - it is the largest I have been to but also extremely well organized. In addition, the students come in herds to greet you during lunch time. The organization and effiency tell you a lot about a school. Sorry, maybe I am a little bit biased since I am from Michigan

True. Ok-- I think I'm going.

This school is so nice. They sent me a blue fleece jacket with "University of Michigan Medical School" embroidered on it....and a Christmas card. Now what kind of medical school does that?

wow, that's awesome!

Me too! The fleece is like two sizes too big, but it's really soft and I'm wearing it anyway.

Michigan defintely wins the award for the most awesome admissions.

holy crap! i want my fleece... where is it??

fleece! fleece! fleece! we want our fleece!

greedy people! lol

all I want is an interview, is that too much to ask for???

congrats to those receiving fleeces 🙂 lucky ducks

wtf? a fleece 😱 i wish i didnt cancel my umich interview now! 😎
