Wow...was this post-interview?

Sorry I meant... has anyone been waitlisted or rejected post-interview?

I haven't seen any post-interview rejections, but I know some people have been waitlisted rather than deferred.

Got that too, pre-interview.

This process is soooo random.

Is that what their status page says? Mine does not say anything. :S

Does anyone know when 2nd look is?

4/24-4/25 Second Look Weekend
5/2 – 5/3 California Re-visit

Copied and pasted this from the UofM website. You going to be there?

What does California Re-Visit mean?

Of my current acceptances, I think I would choose to go to UCLA since I'm in-state. If Michigan gives me a financial incentive to go, then I would go to 2nd look weekend to check it out. I really liked Mich, but UCLA is just as nice, and less expensive.

What does California Re-Visit mean?

On interview day, I think they mentioned something about how Michigan has a focus on recruiting Californians. To make it more convenient for students who have been accepted who live in Cali, they do a second-look-type day there to give you a chance to meet with and talk to Mich people without having to fly to Ann Arbor.

Hope that helps!

Am i the only one whose status page is not updated yet?

Ohh amazing! Thanks!!!

nope. Not sure of what their process is, but I got one and have not paid the deposit.

maybe you're a hot recruit .. future fullride potential? i guess we'll find out in a few weeks when they release those. interesting to see if there will be a sweatshirt to merit scholarship correlation...

I'm currently waiting on a march decision, but I have a professor who knows me pretty well and is willing to write me a letter of recommendation. Would that be a good idea or am I wasting my time? Also, whats the procedure for sending in more LORs at this point in the cycle?

I'm pretty sure that you just use the online application update feature on your application website... LOR is one of the options I think. I have no idea what bearing it would have on your application given their 50 point evaluation scale... but I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt. Good luck!

anyone else gonna be there this friday? 🙂

slash for those of you who have already interviews (which is just about everyone), I was wondering if you could give a breakdown of the schedule for the day? i.e. are interviews before or after the tour/presentation?

thanks!

They split you into two groups, one interviews before the tours/presentations and one after. Was to long ago for me to remember the specifics though.

Hey all,
I'm just curious if anyone has any idea if many people actually are accepted who are deferred until March. It must not be many, right, since they've given out virtually all of the acceptances? My husband has an interview for a phd program at Eastern Michigan, but we're wondering if he should go. If there's really not much of a chance for me to get in, might be better to save money. Any knowledge about the March deferrments? Thanks guys!

Not surprised that they have a point evaluation scale, but what else do you know about it? I remember from a report published by UM's undergrad admissions where they gave you +10 points if you were URM and -4 if you were Asian-American, but I don't remember the rest of that scale they used (i.e. how much it was out of). Needless to say, that was a little bit controversial.

I consider the March Deferral decision to be a silent rejection and I am sure others agree with me (you can also count me among the dead). I wouldn't waste your money, especially since you have MUCH better options in hand.

Yeah, I think you're right that it's a silent rejection. Too bad. I certainly am lucky to have other great options, but my husband only has a few interviews, so its not clear where we'll be able to move. Ann Arbor would have been nice.

Well I don't know a whole lot... Director Ruiz just mentioned that it was a 50 point scale that gave you a "holistic" score for your primary, secondary, LORs, and interview. If your score was above some threshold that they made up at each meeting you were accepted, if you were in the just below the threshold you were deferred, and if your score was lower than that range, you were waitlisted. So it seems to me that a deferral isn't a silent rejection.

He made it sound as if you didn't get a certain number of points for any one experience or part of your application. It certainly didn't sound like the point system that you read about it that undergrad admissions report you mentioned.

Call me an optimist, but I disagree. There will be acceptances in March. People will also be put on the waitlist and accepted at a later date. Why not you?

I am deferred to March too and I think I have to agree with eardrywax. It says on the website that 95% of the offers have already been made. It is really unfair that they target Californians. My parents are the ones paying the tax dollar in Michigan. Dr. Ruiz said specifically during interview that in-state doesn't give you any advantage, except in the end when they are pulling people from the waitlist

Well according to the accepted students website, as of 2/2, 380 people have been accepted. I am guessing that there will still be a good number of acceptances from the deferred pile just based off of what Director Ruiz was saying during the interview day. Also, I got the impression that being from Michigan was an advantage... almost half of the class is filled with Michigan residents. Good luck!

Half the class? That's pretty low for a school that is supposed to be a flagship state school in the first place.

Cool, makes sense. Like in that spin-off thread that aloepathic posted, it figures that they are more holistic about these things.

I believe the reason for that has to do with state funding...and how they don't get very much of it. As a state school, I believe it's also one of the most expensive.

I can definitely buy that, with the shape Michigan's economy has been in for the last decade or so. But, it's not as if Wayne State or Michigan State are taking half of their classes from out of state, either.. and they charge roughly similar tuition rates for residents.

yah that's true, and i doubt that those schools are getting less money from the state than Michigan. i'm not any sort of expert on how schools use their money, but my guess is that Michigan might pay its faculty more and have more available resources. or maybe they just pump up the tuition to keep Michigan competitive. i remember in undergrad that the rationale for increasing the tuition every year was to "stay competitive." guess fewer people apply to your school if its cheaper. although maybe this doesn't hold true for the grad/prof school crowd.

Wow, I clicked through it this morning to see if I knew any of the other Stanford people, but I never took the time to count...

Lots of people used the green foliage-y backgrounds for their picture! 🙂

Can someone post that link with the above info??

You know the emails UMich always sends us? Well, in the email, it says: "see who else has been accepted" and there's everyone's pic, name, and undergrad institution. You can see it there.

Yea, I think only accepted students have access to it.

So now I didn't get that email AND the fleece?!

I'd get in touch with the admissions office if you haven't gotten them. The emails are sent by Sandy Davis and are called "Welcome to M-Pulse". They send one out every month.

I'm pretty sure that Michigan, my alma mater, forgot about my application....I have still yet to be rejected pre-interview even though interview dates are over.
