they said sometime in march... i think march 15th was the day to look for...

Well...i'm not sure you can say if they look favorably upon their own students. If 50% of the incoming class is from the state of michigan and the best students in michigan go to the university of michigan, then you should see a lot of in state students who went to UofM. Out of state students are probably left out of this to some degree.

Does anyone know when March deferrment decisions come out? And from previous years, about how many people get accepted? Are the outcomes worse than getting put directly on the waitlist??

when does michigan let people know about potential merit scholarships. i believe it's sometime around now, correct? if so, has anyone heard from them?
This is completely separate from financial aid, right? The admissions office uses its own funds to recruit students? It has nothing to do with FAFSA or the school-specific applicaiton, right?

my understanding is that the dean's merit scholarship is completely separate from fafsa and fin aid. their website says that sometimes they take both (need and merit) into account for other scholarships though:

But at least the first one is separate from need-based aid.

Has anyone gotten info on second look weekend yet? And am I right in remembering that they talked this up a lot on interview day (I seem to remember one girl saying "even if you're on the fence or aren't really planning on coming to Mich, definitely come to 2nd look because it's so much fun")

Status page updated today. After a months on hold, I was put on lower tier waitlist 🙁

For those who might be reading in future application cycle highly desirable hold =/= top of the waitlist. At least, not always.

Thanks for posting this, I just went and checked and saw that I was middle tier. That does kind of surprise me because the way Mr. Ruiz talked about the "highly desirable" status at the interview made it seem like it was something between a waitlist and an acceptance. My impression was that these people were the ones at the top of the waitlist. Oh well, I loved Michigan but I found a school that was a much better fit for me. Best of luck to all the rest of you on the waitlist! I hope you get the good news you want!

Lower tiered here. Disappointing, but I don't think I should be terribly surprised.

thanks for the info...middle tier here. that makes two waitlists in one day!...got columbia this morning....

Upper tier here, but I have lost hope in Michigan as a Michigan resident

I've been middle tiered. Kind of annoying after waiting all these months. Did anyone who was deferred to March actually get in?

Yea u of M can seriously shove it. you're not getting my alumni money like you planned on! im very bitter about this, you make no sense michigan, why wouldnt you want a student who is top at one of your own campuses a state.

While I am not a U of M alum, I totally feel you. We have similar stats (numerically), I'm in state, and it really hurts considering the innuendos of the "highly desirable" hold.

UofM gives "auto-interview" for applicants who have a certain MCAT score. I think it is 35 or higher. Is this true?

Not exactly. The auto-invites are for a combined GPA/MCAT threshold (ie you have to be above for both numbers) which is different OOS and IS. I found this online chat with Ruiz from 2007 where he said "Not sure on the numbers-so don't quote me as they are going up since our applicant pool was up 20% last year and we anticipate another 20% jump this year. ...so I'm thinking 3.8/ 38 for non-residents and 3.75/36 for Michigan Residents"

Then he said "While the auto interview is nice it only applies to about 15% of all our interview offers" I think that is important - it's really different from a school like WashU that counts numbers really highly for everyone. The justification he gave was that they ended up offering interviews to most of those people anyway, and it let them get a jump on the process and get more of their applicants there before the snow. 😛

Here's the chat:

This post has been really quiet lately. Any word on when merit scholarships will be announced? It should be soon.

The email for second look has monday's date...but I just received it this morning. I dont know why.

I was so excited to sign up and now I'm on the waitlist for second look. Thats ridiculous. I was leaning towards umich as my top choice, but this makes me feel unloved.🙁

Merit scholarships will come out at the end of March.

Anyone else get the second look email this morning and then try to register for it -- only to be told that it was full?

I wonder if they send these emails in some sort of order. I can't imagine the entire event becoming full within a few minutes...

I would have liked to gone to this.

Same exact thing happened to me. Dated Monday night but I got it this morning and tried to register right away and it was full. 🙁 This is NOT going to help my decisionmaking process!!!

Hmm, I got an email about a California event, but I haven't gotten a second look email. Have any CA ppl gotten an email about second look?

I got the CA event email but not the 2nd look email....i think...

what was the subject heading? i tried searching for it after some ppl mentioned it today but i couldn't find anything.

"Register for Michigan's Upcoming Weekend Event"

Sent this morning.

Hmm, I found it in my trash box, sent 3 days ago. WTF... I don't even remember seeing it, let alone deleting it..... ?!?!

They did send the SL invites out in phases, according to the admissions office. Some folks got sent invites on 3/13, some 3/16, 3/17, 3/18. They didn't say why they sent them out piecemeal instead of all together, but it would seem reasonable to conclude that they knew the early invites would have a better chance at getting in to SL.

Wow, this certainly blows. I am trying to decide between U of M and and another school and was going to base my decision on the two second looks, but since I can only go to one of them now...looks like U of M is going to be at a disadvantage. I hope they realize what a mess this is and open up more spaces. They have been so great about this process so far and I refuse to believe that they would let us down now! 👍

Does anybody have any idea when merit-based scholarship info is announced?

The handout they gave on interview day says they will announce the awards on March 25th -- this Wednesday.

correction: 30k a year, I thought it was a full ride when I looked up cost of attendance at michigan (in-state residence). Not a full ride 🙁 but still happy 🙂.

Do you guys think that if I didn't receive an e mail from financial aid today that I will probably not be receiving any merit aid this year? I filled out my fafsa and michigan supplemental form, but haven't sent in copies of my taxes. Do they still hand out rewards to those that haven't sent in their tax return?

I didn't submit any financial data/forms at all but was offered merit aid today. hope that helps.

I thought their website said you only need to send in a copy if you are marked for "verification"...am i missing something?

Maybe I was selected for verification. I will probably call the fin aid office tomorrow for more info.

This wording makes me think that most people dont need to send it in:

Verification Work Sheet: If the cover page of the SAR indicates that you have been chosen for verification, you must complete the verification worksheet and submit it to our office along with federal tax forms.

Federal Income Tax Returns (parents and student) with all supporting schedules and W-2s: If you are selected for verification, tax returns will be required. These documents must be signed by the filer and must include all schedules and W-2's. Please submit these to the Financial Aid Office.

have all the scholarships been given out already?? or do they keep giving them out over a few days?

i thought the merit aid didn't depend on having your finaid forms turned in.. i'm still waiting on my parents for their tax return.

I still haven't turned in my tax returns. So it seems like it is independent.

First off, a huge congrats to those of you who got scholarships! Wow, that's amazing!

Here's my question: presumably, not everybody who got offered a merit scholarship is going to accept. Does anybody know if UMMS recycles the money and sends it back out, or, do they save that money for scholarships in future years?

Do any current students know anything about this? Are there "waves" ? For those of you who got scholarships, did they ask you to inform them before May 15th whether or not you'll be accepting it?

I believe they recycle the money.
