In Tucson, if you want to live some place a little nicer, you're gonna have to be a few miles away from campus. We used to live in the University West neighborhood, but we were getting tired of the nightly search helicopters and decided it was time to move when we heard 5 random gunshots right outside our bedroom window in the middle of the night. Anywhere within a two mile radius of the University is just as bad or worse. I currently live off River between 1st and Campbell. It's pretty nice up here, and if you look in the right places it's suprisingly affordable. It's 4 miles from campus where I'm at, which in Tucson is about a 10 minute drive.
There are some pretty nice places really close to the Phoenix campus, but they are pretty expensive. The Camden apartments are really popular because they are two blocks from campus, but if you want a two bedroom apartment there you're gonna have to pay close to a grand a month there, or at least that's what they were at when we checked them out a few weeks ago. If you don't mind a little bit of a commute, Ahwatukee has some really nice places for decent prices. They are right along the 10, so you can get to downtown Phoenix pretty quickly.
