I responded to them 2x to let them know that I wanted to keep my spot, and still no response. So I guess we just have to trust that the email went through?

I'd call them just to make sure they got it.

So do we expect the rest of the waitlist and rejections to come tomorrow from Phoenix? Hopefully Tucson will just get it all over with at once. I definitely don't want to slow-roast over the weekend about this.

I called Phoenix, they will be sending out a confirmation email today for those that are holding their WL spot.

Also, kind of interesting....I found a powerpoint on UA Med admissions (amsaua.arizona.edu/documents/amsa%20admissions.ppt) and last year Tucson took 65 off the WL and Phoenix took 40 of 48 from the WL. That's great news....let's hope PHX moves that much this year!

40 of 48!? Nooooo wayyyyy. I don't buy that. That sounds pretty extreme. And, I could have sworn that we knew exactly where the WL stopped for Tucson last year and that it was lower than that.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be VERY happy about that, but I don't think that sounds right...

You're right, I looked at it again. Those were the WL numbers for the class of 2012. Hey, we can still hope for that this year 🙂

Yeah, I looked at the powerpoint so that's not a misquote but I have to think that's an error. 84% of your class off a waitlist is unheard of, I would think. Wow.

I guess I buy those numbers somewhat for the 2012 class, because that was the year after the program started as a full length one (wasn't it?), but that's still high. I will guess they go 15-20 into the waitlist this year, which is still huge for a class of 48.

Thanks for checking. That's why I included the reference, I knew people would question those numbers.

That's a really high percentage off the WL but not totally unbelievable IMO considering that 1) it's a small class and 2) it's a newer school. I personally don't have an issue with either, and in fact like these things about PHX, but it's not appealing to everyone.

I agree with posts above. I'm guessing 15-20 off the PHX WL, and around 50 off Tucson's - maybe more. Maybe we should advocate for state legislators/university officials to increase the class size by a few - don't know where the money'd come from though 🙂 If anything else, we could put 'Community Activist' on our application for next year

In case I can't sleep tonight, anyone have any suggestions for passing the time? I guess I could always work on that English research paper . . . 😴

I think the numbers are misleading. 40 people off of the waitlist does not mean that 40 of the 48 people at the school were waitlisters. Instead, if 20 of the people they accepted off of the waitlist declined the acceptance (due to another prior acceptance), then they would move on to the next person on their list. It would be interesting to know what kind of yield schools get from waitlist acceptances. I imagine maybe 50% of people accepted off of the waitlist will end up going there, but that's a complete guess. I know I am still on the waitlist at 2 schools that I would say there is only a 1% chance I would ever attend, but I went there and interviewed so I want to keep my options open.

That's quite the list, Eric. I'll definitely consider some of those options - I prefer sleep though. Hopefully . . .

A friend of mine already figured out my SDN username (saying you're from Snowflake REALLY narrows it down). So I'll reveal my name - I'm Rustin (a name like that also narrows it down - how many 'Rustin's' do you know?)

I'd post a picture of my son, but I haven't taken the time to figure out how to change my profile. I'll get to it - maybe tonight!

Ahh, cool! Nice to meet you Rustin! Good luck with the whole "sleeping" thing. Let me know how that works out for you 😎

Yeah, I don't know you, but I'm sure I know people who know you. Good luck sleeping tonight, I suggest video games if you can't.

Haha, well if you're on here tonight, you'll know! I have family coming to visit, so maybe that will distract me from the suspense . . .

So I've always had a question for Chem/BioChem majors: Why? Chemistry is a painful subject for me. I do decently in it, but only after much pain, sweat, blood, tears, sleepless nights, etc. I know it is a great background for med school, but any other reasons?

My family isn't originally from Snowflake, so we're not bred into all the most common families 🙂 (Flakes, Brimhalls, Palmers, Reidheads, etc). Though we probably know some of the same people.

lrk is right. Not everyone that is offered an acceptance from the waitlist will in turn accept it. In which case they would just continue down the list. As was mentioned somewhere before on this thread Phx presumably has one WL for IN and one for OOS. Likely, the OOS list will move a lot faster than the IN simply because OOSers will start getting accepted to their in state schools and probably choose lower tuition and living close to home over AZ (obviously not everyone will opt to do this, but some will). Whereas the IN list may move slower following the same line of thinking, because most of us would be happy to stay in AZ and go to UA. For Phx this probably means that they have filled their OOS quota of 25% of the class and will continue to keep this ratio (i.e. they will not exceed 12 OOS spots despite the fact that the next in line on the OOS WL may be "more qualified" than perhaps the next in line on the IN WL). Interestingly, Tucson supposedly said that their WL will be composed of both IN and OOS. Given that they too have promised no more than 25% max OOS for their class, they will likely continue down the WL offering spots to both IN and OOS until the 25% quota is filled. Then they will likely only make IN offers until another OOS spot opens up. Although the UA website says that this year it will accept "up to 25% OOS" for its class, let's be realistic. AZ has a budget deficit in the billions and UA plans to charge roughly double tuition for OOSers. Rather than furloughing their faculty and laying off staff, they will try to pull in as much money as they can. Therefore, we can assume 12 seats in Phx and 30 in Tucson will be filled with OOSers. Also, UA profited a great deal more this year on the secondaries by allowing OOS to apply. Sorry if I have offended any OOS applicants. Anyways, I also recall during my Phx interview that Tara mentioned that they had gone through 61 on their WL not including those that chose Tucson over Phx when offered spots at both. Yes, this number seems ridiculously high and downright wrong, but I'm pretty sure that is what she said. She also said that Tucson went through 60 something last year on their WL too. To give you an idea of how fast the WL used to move with just IN, my friend was in the low twenties last year and got into Tucson two weeks after the WL was announced. Obviously, being in the same shoes as all of you (just a lowly applicant no true insight to the adcoms thinking/decisions), I cannot say for certain that any of this is completely accurate. It's just my interpretation.

Anyways, hopefully tomorrow we all get some good news!

I find it enjoyable personally. That's why I chose biochem. I don't really think straight chemistry (i.e. gen chem, p. chem, even o chem) are really relevant to med school. My other biochem requirements will certainly give me a decent foundation to build off of in med school (I hope). Still though, I don't think that makes it worth it for some one to choose chemistry/biochem for med school. Do what you enjoy.

Majored in BMB and MCB here. I choose it bc: I was able to get a job after college with my skills, whereas a general biology might be more difficult to get one.
I like to challenge myself, and I want to learn advanced classes like physics with calc, majors biochem, physical chemistry/bio physicalchem, nucleic acids etc.

Now, is it worth getting a B in physics with calculus vs an easy A in physics. Its frustrating to see how most of my Bs were in honors/difficult courses. I dunno, I can only hope the ad com sees that I took the challenging route. What's your guys opinion on taking easy GPA boosting classes vs difficult ones.

I don't think difficulty of major or classes is hardly even considered. Engineers take Cal I,II, III, Linear Algebra, Diff EQ, Engineering Stats, Calc based Physics, etc. They all get counted equally into our sci-gpa, although they are arguably harder classes than those classes required by pure science majors. Also, don't straight bio majors get to count practically all of their classes in their sci-gpa (the pre-fix to most classes is bio) and thus their sci-gpa is more cushioned (i.e. spread over a greater number of credits)?

Just pick a major a you like. Life will be better if you enjoy what you are doing.

I hope most follow this advice. That's exactly why I'm not a BioChem major =) Though it is really interesting and pertinent.

Biochem is a great major not just for med school but for anyone considering graduate school, either. It's a great springboard to higher education in microbiology, genetics, straight biology, bioengineering, nutrition, anatomy, etc. The course focusing on metabolism alone is relevant to a jillion different fields. I have mad props for straight up chem majors, though. That stuff isn't nearly as relevant or applicable and twice as hard.

I agree. I'm more of a physiology/public health guy (majoring in public health). Though I do research in molecular evolution/biology. Anyone here apply for the MD/MPH? Or MD/MBA? I applied for the MPH program.

So is anyone up for playing the same game online? A bunch of SDNers wanting to relieve some anxiety?

Spring break is coming up...Anyone doing anything or going anywhere?!

Spring break is coming up...Anyone doing anything or going anywhere?!

I'm not currently a student, so I don't have a spring break coming up. But (and I am totally exposing myself as a MAJOR nerd here), I did just buy tickets for WWE Raw for March 29th at US Airways Center. It is the night after Wrestlemania, which I couldn't quite justify getting tickets for.

I'm not the only wrestling fan pre-med, I know. Myron Rolle, a Rhodes Scholar who is going to play in the NFL before med school (anybody here who watches SportsCenter knows who he is), has expressed on his Twitter page that he is an avid wrestling fan, so I feel better about myself.

I hadn't watched wrestling since I was a teenager, but the stress of applying to med school has forced me back into the ridiculous habit of watching it every week. Anybody else out there developed/returned to a ridiculous habit as a result of med school application stress? I know I can't be the only one...

Truffles. I've gained like 30 lbs since turning pre-med . . . JK 🙂 For me, my biggest stress relievers are family and video games. Unfortunately, I waisted the first 19 years of my life gaming. I renounced it when I started undergrad, but they've slowly crept back in. The urge is still infrequent, but it sure is fun to try hard at something that doesn't matter one bit!

Dude, no kidding. I used to be a major gamer. I stopped for the most part in undergrad when all of my friends were getting into MMOs (a.k.a. electronic meth) but still love the chances when I can play through a great game on my 360 or Wii. I played through Batman Arkham Asylum which was incredible not too long ago, and I bought Bioshock the other day. Looking forward to when I'm done with my thesis so I can do a little bit more before med school starts!

Dude, no kidding. I used to be a major gamer.!

In highschool I played football/ran track, but also played a ton of counterstrike. My brother has a Counter strike source on steam, and gave me his user and pass. I was playing a ton of that each night until I started studying for the Mcat again in the beginning of feb

I have always thought that my life would havebeen so much better if I hadn't discovered MMO's in high school. But, when I finally realized how quickly they hook you I decided to stop. 4 years MMO sober! 😀

I suppose my "nerdy" thing is that I watch cartoons. Futurama, Family Guy, Simpsons, yea... but also Spongebob, Fairly Odd Parents, Kids Next Door. Basically anything animated that is NOT anime. Which, for some reason, I can't stand.

But, it has been a really long week guys. I am so glad I get spring break now! Hopefully tomorrow will bring good news for one/some/all of us! I guess I was wrong earlier when I said that today was my day. What I meant was that TOMORROW is my day! 😎

So what was the consensus for email timing tomorrow? 9am? I'll be sure to be on most of the morning.

I can see it now: Rustin is going about his work on a calm Friday morning. He keeps his computer on and nearby. His Google Notifier pops up around 8:57 am. Quickly noticing that the sender is UACOM Admissions, he rushes to open the new email, and . . . he doubles over in intense pain as he suffers a massive heart attack, without even seeing its contents . . .

No spring break for me because I work :-( But I am going to Vegas for a weekend in two weeks.... Hopefully I can make it.

No more spring break since I graduated in December, but my awesome China/Japan trip is in less than 2 weeks! Woot! Still need to plan that though.... =/

I can't imagine majoring in Biochem especially at ASU (like Irk). I would have been miserable since I didn't like half of the professors in that department. I technically could've graduated with a micro major but I didn't want take the basic micro lab my last semester.

Really? I am in Biochem at ASU. Some of the profs seem like they might be jerks during lecture or whatever, but most are really cool if you are one on one, like in their office hours. Lefler is like that, if you know who that is.

I agree with whoever said straight chem is impressive compared to biochem. But then again, biochem seems more relevant to a lot more things. I chose biochem since I loved chemistry since AP Chem in high school, and like I said, biochem is so relevant to so many things whether you are interested in microbes, plants, or people.

So I just found out that my mom is apparently making a big deal out of my recent publication. She wanted to call the whole family (I'm the youngest of five, all told it would have been 25 people) together to celebrate it on Saturday since I will be in town. I told her nearly every pre-med has a publication somewhere, and yeah, I'm not consenting to a celebration on my behalf the day after I get rejected from the whole reason I worked my butt off for the publication. Now, if I somehow get accepted or even very high on the waitlist tomorrow, then I'm partying til the cows come home, then slaughtering the cows and having a barbecue.

Maybe on SDN, but I doubt that the majority of pre-meds have a publication. Be proud of your publication for your mom's sake! (I'm a co-author in a publication, and while I didn't really get that excited about it at all, my mom and family sure did. I was more amazed that it was finally published after all the revision requests and that my Pi/Post Docs actually kept their word of including me. Actually, they owe me a few more publications with all the data I obtained for them, so hopefully I get included in another one in the future! yeaa right)

Yeah, totally not true. A publication is something to be proud of! I can understand not wanting to celebrate it at this point in time, but at some point you definitely owe yourself a back-pat for doing something relatively rare.

I am proud of it, I just don't want to celebrate it on a large scale until it gets me to my goal.

It'd be interesting to see what percent of med school applicants/matriculants have publications. I'd try to look that up but I'm away from home until Saturday night.

I called Phoenix, they will be sending out a confirmation email today for those that are holding their WL spot.

I never got any confirmation . . . should I be panicked or did no one else receive one either? I called and left a message on their answering machine. I quintuple-checked the email address too. I hope someone has some good news for me, that they just haven't sent them yet . . . ?

Phew. It would have been nice to get one, today at the latest (even an automated one saying, "Your email was received."

So tonight I visited with my dentist brother, and upon looking at my tooth and hearing that cold makes the toothache better he told me I will probably need a root canal. My appointment is at 7 AM tomorrow. I will probably be in the dentist's chair, in the middle of a root canal when I hear back from UofA. Awesome.

Maybe you should have your wife check your email and let you know when Tucson sends the good news.

In years past, I noticed the forums were buzzing the night before, with people staying up into the wee hours of the morning (including you mathlink)! So what's everyone up to, 12 hours before you find out the rest of your life?

Yeah, I didn't get a confirmation today either but that's what she said when I called (I was checking that my email was received). She said that WLers have been calling to ask, so they would send out a confirmation email. I'm sure they're busy finalizing the WL, so maybe they didn't get to it. The lady was very nice, so if you are worried about it I wouldn't hesitate to call.

Thanks for the info. It makes sense that they'd send a confirmation, but like you said, they were probably really busy and didn't get to it.

I get email and use SDN almost exclusively from my phone. My ringtone for email is Hells Bells, so when I hear ACDC in the middle of my root canal, I'll know not to ignore it.

Tonight is like Christmas... except I dunno if Santa is going to bring me toys or coal.

Some guy once told me his version of Hell: an eternal state of unknowing, fearing what could happen but never knowing what was going to happen. I'm sure glad this WILL end tomorrow, and we'll all have good news! 😀

So who wants to use study groups at all? Sign me up with all you BioChem majors! Hopefully I could contribute on some of the Bio sides of things.
