I'm in the same boat with Wash U. Unless they exceed my wildest dreams and U of A can't give me any financial aid at all I'm very excited to end up at Phoenix. Unfortunately, I was emailing back and forth with Keli at Phoenix and because the scholarship application isn't even out yet it's unlikely that we'll hear back before the May 15th deadline. I think that Phoenix (can't really speak for Tucson, didn't get as great a vibe from them when I interviewed) has been wonderful up until this point with assisting students but it seems just ridiculous to me that something as important as scholarship possibility isn't made available until AFTER we have to choose the school we end up at.

yah....its absolutely aggravating. that's where i'm at with boston.....and not only for scholarship, but financial aid....i won't see it until after i have to make my decision....which is heavily dependent on cost

and what's really aggravating me is i still haven't heard from two schools.....who are taking their pretty time lol.

👍 It would be kind of like not knowing the tuition of the school you're going to attend until after you have to decide. Scholarship money can be the difference between going to one school and going to another. No one is going to care about paying 70k a year for med school if they get a 70k per year scholarship to that school.

weird how we highlighted nearly the exact same portions in our posts, which were posted at the exact same time. lol

Shep, I agree with you that Phoenix has been really great so far with helping out students. I actually emailed Tara an update letter last week in the evening and she responded back around 7pm. Phoenix really seems to go out of their way for their students. It seems that you're in a tough spot, has either campus sent out financial aid information yet?

I don't want to sway you with your decision because you need to do what is best for you, but I went to grad school out in Boston. It is a really cool place to check out, especially if you know you're going to come back to AZ. PM me if you want to know any specifics. Good luck with your decision.

Me: "What are the chances a school like me and an applicant like you...ending up together?"
ADCOM: "Well, that's difficult to say. I mean we don't really..."
Me: "Hit me with it! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way to get here, UACOM, the least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?"
ADCOM: "Not good"
Me: "Like one out of a hundred?"
ADCOM: "I'd say more like one out of a million."
Me: "So you're telling me there's a chance!"

Legit, with your stats I'd say it's more like one in a few 😀 Keep your hopes up for May (like me)! We should see some pretty good movement start in a couple weeks.

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering what the range/average MCAT score is for accepted in-state students? Can people who got accepted share their score or give me a range? Thanks and best of luck to those on the waiting list! I will be reapplying this year!

i think on the brochure i got, the avg was a 28 or 29. i cant recall.

the range really varies. i've heard of someone who is currently there with a 21.....and the scores just go up from there. my score breakdown is in my profile.

to everyone else, this is somewhat random, but does anyone knows what U of A ranked last year in the US News Top Medical Schools thing? For the new one, its ranked 66 for research and 68th for primary care.....but i can't recall what it was last yr. for some reason, i think it was unranked. anyone remember? and no, i'm not THAT guy that cares about rankings. just happens to be the new list is now out lol.

I got a 31N on the MCAT and I'm waitlisted at both places. I know at least 6 people who got a lower score than me on that and were accepted already though, and I also (personally) know 2 people who absolutely crushed my MCAT score and got rejected clean out.

I'm pretty sure it was unranked...yes, "not that it matters, or there is anything wrong with that."

And yeah, U of A is somewhat strange, it can be either an expected acceptance or the bane of your existence...speaking of which, for those of you waiting, a friend of mine recently withdrew from UA Tucson to go to Sinai. Though, I don't know how long it takes for it to convert to an acceptance for WLers. Good luck! I have a couple of friends that got into Tucson from the WL after they thought everything was lost last year.

Here are the data for Phoenix's class of 2013.

(tried to post a picture of the document, but can't figure it out right now)

CLASS STATISTICS

25 men, 23 women

Class average age is 24 years (range 21-34)
Average Sci/Math GPA: 3.67
Average Overall GPA: 3.71
Average MCAT Score: 30

They didn't release the ranges for MCAT... I know a couple people have 35+, so that means there must be some people with ~25 or so. As for me, I'm pretty much average... and I'm ok with that. Hahaha. I embrace my mediocrity.

I don't know if you did that as a joke Matt, but either way it was an excellent way to start the first class of the morning. 👍 The reason that link doesn't work is because you linked to your computer. You're gonna need to upload that somewhere if you want to hyperlink it like that.

I know a couple of friends of a friend who got in to Tucson with 26s-28s. A very good friend of mine who should have seen a lot more success then he did this cycle has been waitlisted at Phoenix with a 33.

Tell him/her to join us over at SDN so they can be added to our waitlist. Do we have the average stats from Tucson 2013?

Not accepted, but WLed at both with a 31O MCAT. My GPA was pretty average too. The numbers side of things is obviously important, but you've got to also make sure you're well-rounded and having something unique about yourself is a big plus. For 'The Boat' and me, work experience in Russia was the Redwood that broke the WL Camel's back . . . (read earlier posts). 😀

On a serious note, Tara confirmed what MadEvans and Brrooother had said about the withdrawal of ASU - they know about as much as we do (meaning the helpful information that MS1's and online articles provide), but do not expect it to affect students much. One article I read online the other day said: they're changing the way they run the kitchen, but they still serve the same food. It's good to hear 🙂

Adding in shep's friend, and the POSSIBLE movement at Tucson :xf: We need to call Tucson today and tomorrow to verify.

I feel your mediocrity madE, I mean all the work that the "boat" and MIR did in Russia only leaves the rest of us to reside in their shadows. Next time you guys go and do some humanitarian work would you mind taking some of us along? I'd like a statue of me in Russia too.

Come on waitlist, show us some love.

MIR, I'm IS also and hopefully I'll be at Phoenix with the rest of you soon.

😉 Woops, my bad, I forgot I'm on a premed forum, details are crucial. This happened Monday afternoon, I believe.

I'm assuming that this was our #17 unfortunately 🙁

But don't lose too much hope, my really good friend told me last night she knows three people that were accepted to Tucson and some out of state schools. They are all going to be declining their Tucson offers!!!:soexcited:She said they haven't yet because they have been busy with finishing off the semester and haven't had time. Hopefully they all choose to do it soon :xf::xf::xf:

Ahhhh, so I'll bet tmm808 owes his spot to your friend. tmm got invited on Tuesday. I'm still going to leave the #18 on our list, just in case something does happen today or tomorrow. Thanks for the info!

SWEET MedHopeful! I hope those three aren't any sort of exception either 😀 Don't worry, you'll be getting a call/email in no later than a month and a half!

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering what the range/average MCAT score is for accepted in-state students? Can people who got accepted share their score or give me a range? Thanks and best of luck to those on the waiting list! I will be reapplying this year!

As others have said, the range at UA is pretty big, but from what I have heard from one particular med student down in Tucson, this may be changing with their new dean who is apparently big on rankings. I can't confirm if this is true or just one med student just saying what she thinks will happen, but it wouldn't surprise me.

My MDapps profile has more info about me as an overall applicant, but my MCAT was a 35 O.

i think on the brochure i got, the avg was a 28 or 29. i cant recall.

the range really varies. i've heard of someone who is currently there with a 21.....and the scores just go up from there. my score breakdown is in my profile.

I have that same brochure, but its at home. I remember it being about a 28 or 29 as well.

Some one with a 21, really? Damn, I'm not a big fan of the MCAT as a determinant of who should become a doctor, but damn a 21 is awfully low. I could see a 24 if the applicant was a STELLAR candidate in EVERY other aspect (including a strong GPA to show MCAT was a fluke more than anything). I just have trouble believing that someone with a 21 has enough other things to make them a better candidate than all the hundreds and hundreds of other qualified candidates who apply each year with a 24+ and don't get accepted. Just my opinion though...

I don't know a thing about rankings, but I guess that's a good thing if UA actually made the rankings this year...the med student I talked to said she thought by starting to accept OOS this year that UA's ranking would go up. I'm not sure if it will, but it certainly makes it more of a regional/national school than just another state school that no on outside of Arizona cares about because they can't apply here.

I honestly don't want anyone at UA-Tucson that doesn't want to be there, but it makes me a little sad to see people going elsewhere because it is such a good school. I hope they aren't making the same mistake that I almost made coming into this application cycle, thinking that I didn't want to just go to my lowly state school...still, that's great news for the waitlist!

Thanks Madein! I certainly hope so! I try to always live by my Dad's motto "Don't over expect because then you can't be disappointed." Unfortunately in this situation it is very VERY hard to think that way ha ha! I have good feelings about this year though. I know we are moving slow right now, but I really think we are going to pick-up and eventually catch people in the 60's. No math behind that prediction, just a gut feeling. So see you in class in August Madein!

the person with a 21 is a current MS1....i don't want to get into the specifics as to why/how the person got in because it could just start an argument....and i am a proponent of a minimum passing score on the mcat....which that would not be.....but whatever..... i guess i forgot the brochure accurately then. but i remember it being somewhere in the high 20s for sure.

I am pretty sure you are remembering that accurately...

precisely then....i'm not remembering it precisely haha.....

in other news, i'm leaning more and more towards staying in tucson at the moment and very excited for second look next week.

i think SDN people who are going should have some kind of hand signal or indicator as to who they are or if they're on sdn lol. 🙄

I have the brochure at home from interview day and I will post the exact data after class, but I know for sure that the average MCAT for considered students was 28 and the average for accepted was 29. The brochure I have also has the breakdown of average section scores and GPA which I can't recall at the moment.

i think SDN people who are going should have some kind of hand signal or indicator as to who they are or if they're on sdn lol. 🙄

I vote the signal should be clapping our hands over our heads, but to really set ourselves apart from anyone else that might be doing that we should crouch down while doing it.

If anyone will have an open guest pass on Second Look Day I would love to be able to come! I live right here in Tucson. If not, that is OK too.

If I get to go I promise to do Erik's special SDN move...OK maybe in a corner where not too many people will see me, but I'll still do it!

Oh also, has anyone called Tucson yet today? I can call around 2:30 when I get home if no one has yet.

There is a minimum passing score on the MCAT....from UAs website: "Screening: The UA College of Medicine will consider only applicants with a total MCAT score of 22 or higher. Applicants who fall below this standard will be informed of their status upon receipt of the AMCAS application by the Admissions Office and will be encouraged to retake the MCAT. Note: Sept. 12, 2009 is the latest exam we will accept."

Now I'm kind of interested in getting into the specifics...URM?

I may or may not do this. Perhaps if I find some other SDNers first, then we can all do it together. I would hate for school to not even have started and me to be "that guy who claps." Although I'm sure I could just run with it and just clap after everything.

That's for this year, and it sounds like the person with the 21 was accepted last year. If I had a 21 I don't think I would advertise that AT ALL. Honestly, I don't plan on advertising my MCAT score period. Once you're in med school it doesn't matter. Now if I get a 250+ on Step-I, then I will make T-shirts...

Seems like a waste! With that score you could have gotten a great residency and eventually become a great doctor, but I guess if you'd prefer to make T-shirts for a living...

No, that's been that way at least for the past two cycles. And I agree about the advertising the MCAT score and it not mattering at all in med school. But since we aren't in med school yet....*cough*39S*cough*

well....i suppose each school has a minimum score they *claim* to have, but i mean like....the USMLE has a minimum passing score. if you don't pass it, you have to retake it.....i think the same thing should go for the mcat. and yes.....it's a URM. i have a quite a few good friends who are MS1s at U of A - Tucson (graduated with them from U of A) and several of them have told this to me.

the 21 wasn't advertised per se. It's just known about among my MS1 friends who are friendly with the student.

regarding tshirts, i use to joke (semi-joke that is; as in semi-serious lol) around in undergrad if i scored a 40+, i would go streaking through campus with the number on my body haha.....only b/c i knew it would never happen.

Erik had said something about coming as someone's guest to 2nd Look Day. I am not sure on the specifics of how you RSVP for that. Erik, are you going as a guest for sure? Do you know how to do it?

when i click on my rsvp link, i can input a number of guests....but i'm not sure if there is a limit or something.

Yeah I have no idea on that one. Well as we get closer to the actual day, just let me know if you find out anything more. If it doesn't work out it is no big deal at all 🙂

Haha, I was like, "a waste? How could that be a waste?," then I LOL (almost ROTFLMA, but not quite...I could have ROTFLMAOKASFMMUTSCU, but that didn't happen either).

No, that's been that way at least for the past two cycles. And I agree about the advertising the MCAT score and it not mattering at all in med school. But since we aren't in med school yet....*cough*39S*cough*

39S? That explains the WashU acceptance...honestly though, one passage in the BIO section "tanked" my MCAT. I think I missed every question in it. Oh well, that happens, and I was still happy regardless. I'm glad you'll be going to UA with that 39, it shows you know how good of a school it really is which I think a lot of people don't realize.

when i click on my rsvp link, i can input a number of guests....but i'm not sure if there is a limit or something.

I'm pretty sure there is no official limit. I think I saw that one person RSVPed for 4 guests. I guess they are bringing there whole family...

the 21 wasn't advertised per se. It's just known about among my MS1 friends who are friendly with the student.

I'm kind of interested to see how the student is performing now in comparison to other MS1s. I think the difference between someone with a 29 and a 39 when it comes to medical school would be relatively slight, if at all noticeable. A 21 seems like the student has fundamental problems with basic science, which I imagine could get one into a lot of trouble down the line in med school. As much as an MCAT is a correlation for med school performance and later Step 1 scores, it surprises me that a school would go for someone like this over a candidate slightly more qualified, URM or not. I'm sure there were more than a few URMs with better scores who didn't get quite the same love that cycle.

FWIW, i hate verbal lol. i definitely tanked on one of the passages....and still remember sitting and staring at the physics question i couldn't figure out lol. still bothers me b/c i spend 7 or so minutes thinking about it haha.

i am interested as well. i'll see if i can find out...... a 21 shouldn't be too difficult to attain i feel. and i have read studies correlating success on the mcat to that in medical school and on the USMLEs....but i suppose there are always exceptions. i also don't feel there is a huge difference between some of those scores. i have very intelligent friends who have scored in the mid to upper 20s and some in the low to mid to even upper 30s.....and sometimes i think it comes down to the luck of what you get on the test and what your fortes are....i happen to take mine previously while quite sick (mononucleosis) and didn't get in last yr because of it. retook it and did much better (9 point jump .... had to explain that to a LOT of interviewers lol). so being healthy and in the right psychological mood can play a role as well. idk....lots of factors. either way, i honestly feel 21 is too low. wow....my post got redundant quickly lol.

I agree that sometimes it's about mentality and little bit of luck. I noticed while taking the AMCAS practice tests that once you get to the mid 30's, sometimes only one question separates you from the next highest score. So if someone with a 35 or so had gotten 5 more questions right, they'd be sitting at a 39. I took too long on a couple of PS questions and had to rush through the rest of the section; then I was cruising in BS. I was so afraid I bombed the PS, but turns out I nailed it, and didn't do so hot on BS - it's a mystery to me. I honestly thought that maybe my score got mixed up with someone else's, but I realized that I might have known my PS better than I thought, and was overconfident with BS (though BS was consistently my highest area in the AMCAS practice tests).

About the WL, I'm hoping that even if we don't quite make it to 23-25 before May 1st, the decline rate during May will be slightly higher than previous years, b/c of OOSers, and make up for it. Hopefully it's just enough to reach #62 😀 for me and paiger.

If no one calls Tucson today before closing, I'll call tomorrow.

Sorry I made it home from work so much later than I thought I would, so I never had a chance to give Tucson a call today. Thanks Madein for taking up it up for tomorrow!

I HATED verbal too. I busted my ass doing so many damn verbal practice passages it was ridiculous. They must throw verbal in there to give the english majors who are applying to medical school a chance.

As for remembering passages/questions we struggled on, I remember wanting to punch the computer screen during that damn bio passage I couldn't get. I seriously finished bio with like 20 minutes to go (which was normal for me at that point), and I spent all the rest of my time staring at the screen. Maybe my brain was fried, but I can almost swear to you that passage was written in French or something...at least it may as well have been. Whatever, it doesn't matter now, but damn it would have been nice to have walked out of that test feeling the way I did after the physical section (which I freaking destroyed). I seriously thought to myself that I hoped the rest of the test went that way because I would have easily pulled off a 40, but of course it didn't...🙄

No idea. I just know that a friend of mine has gotten in and told me she would take me as a guest. I'm assuming that she isn't lying!

Erik, I just saw a reminder in the accepted thread about posting pictures of Shep, and and I realized you have yet to post a picture of him on this page. You better do it fast if you want to keep the tradition alive!
