I love hearing that medical school is exactly what you put into it. I couldn't agree more. I mean, I suppose I'm no medical student yet, but I've heard from M.D.s and D.O.s alike that it makes no difference where you go to school, but what you, yourself do in that school. That is why I've always kept my options open to the Caribbean and osteopathic schools in addition to the traditional allopathic education. I've always based my opinion of a school on its merits and values and not on the degree it grants or some perceived reputation. Proving ourselves as good physicians should have nothing to do with what school we attended.

This is getting ridiculous. SOMEONE *please* get some news of waitlist movement this week. I've no intention of actually waiting until mid-May to see this thing start moving again.

Maybe I'll ask for you guys when I go down there tomorrow for an individual second look day. =] I wish I could meet everyone at the actual second look day, but I will be in Ohio then babysitting my awesome newborn nephew!!!! I am having a hard time choosing Tucson over Jefferson right now, so hopefully, this will convince me otherwise.

Erik, every time I log in to SDN and see that "ehandber" made the most recent post on the U of A app thread, I get a little excited thinking maybe you got in!

Unfortunately I had a different second look scheduled during the same time and as I am 99% sure I'll be going to Phoenix I wanted to give this one a shot. Sad to have missed being able to meet everyone, though. Glad to hear it went well!

I had heard there were a bunch of different second looks all scheduled for that weekend. There were a couple others that I've heard were out of the country and couldn't make it. That's why I don't really know what it means for the people that didn't show up.

It would be great if you chose Phoenix. We really do have a lot of awesome people in our class. Also, they put together such an incredible second look day. Hopefully I'll see you in July.

Ha! Well, I appreciate the support! I have a student in the class I TA that has listed his name in his gmail as University of Arizona (for what reason I don't know, especially because we go to ASU) and he gets me everytime. I see an email that says it is From: University of Arizona and the little gmail snippet always just shows me

"Erik Handberg, Hello! It..."

Or something like that. And I'm always sooooooooo let down. But, hopefully that means that if/when I *do* get in I will be pleasantly surprised.

I agree, starting to get a little restless from the lack of movement! It would make my day SO much if we moved even just one spot today!

Isn't it that if you intend on matriculating at a school that starts in July you have to withdraw from all others by April 15th? I think I saw that somewhere in this thread or the accepted thread. If that's the case, then we will hopefully see some movement this week from people withdrawing from UA who plan on matriculating to schools that start in July. I hope this is true and we get some more of you guys in!

CONGRATS tmm808! You da man (or da woman)! LRK, I hope and believe you are right (I'm guessing 5 more spots in the next 17 days - but maybe it will be more).

Just updating this bad boy (basically just at the bottom):

Do you really think so?!!?! I would be SO HAPPY if that happens! I really hope you are right!

Also, I tried calling the admissions office in Tucson to see if maybe it moved to #18 or more since we don't have those people on the threads, but it just rang once and went straight to voice mail. I will try again later. Did anyone else try by chance?

Looking at the waitlist numbers we have, it looks like the calling is going to have to start back up again, since we are pretty sparse in the 20's.

I DO think so, though it's not exactly backed by precedence. One year it moved more than that after 2nd look, the other it did not - plus both those years, 2nd look was the same weekend for both campuses. Some things point to 5 or 6 spots in the next 2 1/2 weeks, but it's also a gut feeling. :xf: Let's just say either way MedHopeful, that we're gonna get to your 'May 1st historical precedence number' of 39% = 19.

I haven't tried calling, but now we'll need to remember to have someone call a couple of times each week if we want to know for sure (until we hit 20, and then a while after that - and May usually chugs through spots #25-50). 👍

About that 20-34 gap - does anyone think a person really interested in UA would be more likely to join the SDN crew? Catch my drift? 😎 I mean, why does everyone else get on here?

For myself, I'm obviously VERY interested in attending UA (both campuses), but I'm also really glad to have found such camaraderie among us all. It's been great! 😀

Hey guys, I finally joined SDN as I've been checking it out the last couple months. I think it is great that everyone shares information and I feel that we all have a lot in common. As for me, I was waitlisted at Phoenix and have my heart set on going there. It's great to see all the positive feedback from the second look and I hope that others will post more about the weekend for those of us that wished we were there. Keeping my fingers crossed that the waitlist keeps moving. Congratulations tmm808 on your acceptance!

I am happy as well to find camaraderie. I hope that we can all make it off the waitlist so we can be future med students together. We can make people wonder how we already know so much about each other haha!

Anyway, I will start back up my weekly Monday and Thursday calls to the admin office to check on the WL status.

I asked about that a while back and it doesn't apply to Phoenix this year. It will next year because they'll have a separate AMCAS app but unfortunately for waitlist movement the deadline this year is still May 15th.

What about for applicants that have OOS acceptances to schools that start in July? For those schools they have to make a choice by the April 15th deadline right? That is, if they would rather attend the OOS school with an earlier start date over UA.

Congrats tmm! Are you still waiting on Phoenix?

Yeah, I believe that's correct. I don't know of very many schools that start early than Phoenix does, though.

Looking at both of these posts confirms what I was trying to get at. For OOSers or ISers who want to go to a school that starts in July, they are supposed to let that school know by April 15th AND withdraw from all other schools they have been accepted to by that same date. That means if say some one is accepted to Phoenix or Tucson AND Case Western (which starts July 8th) and they want to go to Case for some stupid reason, then they would have to withdraw from UA by April 15th. This would result in WL movement. I doubt April 15th will have the kind of movement May 15th will, but hopefully it will be a few spots.

Thanks for the welcome. I found out that I was waitlisted at Phoenix on 3/4. After my visit, I was very impressed by the curriculum and it seemed that the students I met were genuinely happy at the school. Hopefully, the waitlist keeps on rolling along for both campuses. Does anyone have any housing suggestions for Phoenix campus?

Hey All,

Anyone happen to catch that Dodgers / D-backs trouncing today! If not, tune in tomorrow cause I am sure it'll be happening just like that all week.
😀 😎 😀 😉 😀 😎 😀

As for pertinent information, has anyone heard of any OOS love from the adcoms lately? I hope they know that despite loyalty for the best and bluest team in baseball us OOSers still really really want to come to AZ to study medicine, are already making plans to move, and would be honored by an acceptance offer.

In other news I just found out a friend of mine is on the PHX OOS waitlist as well. Not sure if my friend is already in our count (though I would guess not), but I'll be sure to post the fantastic news if and when it arrives for either of us.

Case Western (which starts July 8th) a

Holy smokes, I didn't know that schools started that early. I'd hazard that the number of applicants accepted to both U of A and one of those early starting schools is rather minuscule, though. Not to rain on anyone's wait list parade, though. Maybe a spot or two.

Yeah, plus if you figure in that not every one will follow the April 15th rule (if they even know about it), then there won't be a lot of movement. I still hope that a few spots move around that day, but the biggest days will certainly still be right around the 15th of May.

Does anybody know what percentage of the WL movement has occured on the days around May 15th in past years? What do you think, maybe 10-20% of the total movement? Where are our math gurus to figure this out???

Speaking of April 15th rule. I recall speaking to PHX and they said that by april 15th, med schools will report all their accepted students to the rest of the schools. PHX said that it would not make a difference as a waitlister whether you had zero acceptances or multiple acceptances. Yet, as far as that 2 week buffer ( having to give up an acceptances if you have more than one ) you would imagine that there would be more movement because now med schools will know who is holding on to acceptances and who isn't. Hopefully PHX will put pressure on those people with multiple acceptances, and we can expect movement prior to the may 15th date. Fingers crossed.

You called? JK 😀 nonlocality is the real guru. These are approximate, but the week before and after May 15th in 2008 saw movement of 16 spots, or about 25%. Those same two weeks for 2009 saw movement of 17 spots, or 29% of total movement. Especially for 2009, the majority of movement happened the week after May 15th (you can imagine all the UA acceptees who got invites from other schools - and they were all IS last year). For 2008, the rate of movement was almost the same throughout the entire month of May, while 2009 was playing catch-up. I'm still predicting 5 more spots before May 1st - COME on BABY! :xf::xf::xf:

nonlocality passed his baton on to me - I'll be posting his latest plot in just a minute. 🙂

The rate is really gonna have to pick up on both sides of May 15th for me to meet my May 25th acceptance prediction. And, as I've said before, if I don't receive an acceptance by June 1st I'm really gonna start to panic I think!

LET ME IN! and also LET MY PEOPLE GO (to med school)...(you're my people in this case).

Some interesting reading:

Yeah, I agree. I think there are a few things that make the curriculum at Phoenix very unique. And I LOVE how they seem to work with each student's interests, to find the best fit for them (like with preceptors, scholarly project, extra elective in 3rd year, etc).

That article is interesting - it may be even more reason for me to do IM. I'd actually like to teach and do research after having practiced for a while, and it sounds like there should be a future need for that . . .

In case someone didn't get to it, the title and lead paragraph of bminz' article are: U.S. Faces Shortage of Doctors - Experts warn there won't be enough doctors to treat the millions of people newly insured under the law. At current graduation and training rates, the nation could face a shortage of as many as 150,000 doctors in the next 15 years, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

As promised, here is nonlocality's last plot! I'll continue from here on out. For some reason zipping jpeg's from my photoshop were still too big, so I made it a pdf - let me know if you have any troubles with it.

I feel your pain 😀 There's obviously a chance you wont get in, Erik - but it's very small. I'd say it's as likely as the Suns winning it all this year: it's possible, but less than statistically significant (though I'm still holding out for an appearance in the Western Conference Finals 😀).

I was thinking I was within 70 posts of you dude! Looks like I've still got a ways to go 🙄 Sorry the graph above so huge!

Thanks for posting that MadeinReydn. I wish that slope would start to increase a little, we are starting to match other years at this time in the number pulled off the waitlist. Basically our 13 spot head start is starting to be diluted by our slow rate of movement. Thankfully we are halfway through April, so that should mean it is time to pick-up the speed!

I think we will definitely move those 10ish number of spots to meet Erik's May 15th historical number.

Like was mentioned above, there may not be many UA acceptees accepted to schools beginning before July 30th, and even fewer that actually decide to decline at UA. However, the April 15th deadline will create SOME movement at schools beginning before July 30th, and other schools. Any movement from other schools COULD mean it might reach UA. 🙂

Example: Jane is accepted to Case Western and to UT San Antonio. She wants to go to Case, so she declines at SA. John is WLed at SA and accepted to UA. He gets pulled at SA and for some reason, he really wants to go there, so he declines at UA. The whole domino effect of May 15th, but much smaller. I hope something happens, anyway. In this example, as happens with May 15th, there will be more movement at UA AFTER April 15th. I want to be FORCED to keep updating that excel every few days. :xf::xf::xf::xf:😀 (Post 200!)

dbacks gonna win the west IF brandon webb comes back by end of may and is healthy for the rest of the season. you read it here first. lol.

I don't know if that's gonna happen or not, but I can guarantee that the Dodgers will NOT win the west because they don't have the pitching. The Dbacks are one of the only teams in the NL capable of letting Kershaw out of all of those jams he gets himself into by walking the entire lineup. If he's your second best pitcher, you're in trouble.

What's pissed me off this morning is that the Broncos got 2 second rounders for Brandon Marshall. Are you watching that Rod Graves? Couldn't we have gotten AT LEAST that for Anquan Boldin?

To continue my hijacking of this thread into an Arizona sports discussion, I think the Suns are better than they've been in the Second Nash Era. The Lakers seem to have some kind of necrosis inside of them, and nobody else is as good right now. Especially if Robin Lopez can come back, I see no reason why they can't come out of the west. Except for the fact the Robert Sarver and Steve Kerr make up the worst ownership/managment combination in the NBA apart from Donald Sterling and whoever is replacing Mike Dunleavy. So, the basketball Karma Gods will probably make them lose to the Spurs in round one, in which case I will murder someone.

Anyway, I am hoping all of this curses the city of Phoenix with a mass exodus of their med school acceptees. That will help all of you still waiting for an acceptance.

:hijacked: You can hijack our thread any day, ML! I actually think the Suns will have a better shot in the playoffs if they lose tonight. They'll be the 4th seed and face Denver - who hasn't won in Phoenix the last 11 tries. Then they'd face LA or OKC - I might even prefer they face LA, b/c of what you were mentioning ML. I DO think they have a legit chance to get to the Conference Final, but I think it will depend on who they face there whether they advance further (Utah or Dallas would obviously be tough but possible; they're cursed against SA for some reason). They'd probably face Cleveland or Orlando in the Finals. Any way you slice it, if Lopez gets healthy and they continue to play like they have since the All-Star break, no one's gonna want to play the Suns! It's not about who's the better team, but who's the better team during the playoffs.

I called UA COM Tucson earlier this morning to see if we had gone past 17 (since #18 and 19 aren't on SDN). Sadly we are still at 17. I'm still happy for the movement we had yesterday though!

Congrats to tmm on acceptance.

Good job to madein for posting and for future updating of the plot - thanks.

It would be nice to know from those who are already accepted what the likelihood is of them finally filling a tucson/phx seat (50-50, 75-25, or 25-75 is good enough). This would help those waiting to get a better sense of how quickly the WL might move.

My take on the WL:
This is clearly the slowest WL accept rate in years, so it is very hard to draw an analogue to prior years. But it also seems clear that we will end up at about 20 by the end of april, much lower than I expected.

For those with multiple accepts, they are entering the most important decision phase of the process. They will now be getting their financial aid offers and that along with their second look visits they can begin the important deliberations (cost/location/quality/prestige). Sometimes during this phase there is some give and take with respect to their aid offers, particularly grants/scholarships. So this phase has some duration to it.

These multiple accept folks really control what happens next. The vast majority have until mid-may to decide, then the ripple/rolling through waitlists extends out to early/mid june. After that time WL changes really grind to a crawl. These changes are mostly from accepted candidates having/taking year-offs, financial, family, legal or grade issues.

I think 50 and below are still solid but getting into the high 60's might be difficult.

Man, I really want in.

Also, just so everyone knows, Turkelton is going to the Coyotes playoff game tonight. Every be jealous.

Go coyotes. :claps:

hopefully the WL really picks up soon. i'm leaning towards UA over my other choice at the moment. It's really difficult for me to see me paying 40k+ a yr over UA to a school that i'm unsure is worth it....and....people might call me crazy on this one.....i prefer the undergrad environment in the sense that i can go see all the wildcat sports (basketball, football, and such) and do intramurals yr round. those are important to me lol.

and yes, i am going to the coyotes game. somehow, my best friend got free tickets (or maybe just paid for them and lied about it). i'm very much looking forward to going tonight. the only coyotes jersey i have though is signed by wayne gretsky, so i cant wear that and therefore likely wont look like true coyotes fan like YOU....yelling for players to "skin the other guy and his kids"....lol

I considered this too, so don't worry. You're not too crazy! Its appealing to have an atmosphere that includes more than just medicine.

I am definitely going to UA Tucson. BU is the only school I thought may change my mind, but they put me on the waitlist anyway.

Sorry WLers, I'm also 100% on Tucson. I already withdrew from every other school, so I have no more options even to really consider. Well, except the schools I have been waitlisted at, but Case and Pitt are not as good to me as UA (even if the cost was equal), so UA it is.

Ugh, I still don't know which school I'm going to after a revisit to Tucson yesterday. I guess I will now wait until after Jefferson's second look.

ya....BU is what i'm talking about. it's great. don't get me wrong....but is it 74k a yr great? plus cold weather plus south boston.....

U of A = warm weather + college athletics (i'm a HUGE sports person) + intramurals + friends in tucson + more affordable ....... you can see where i'm leaning.

I'm in the same boat with Wash U. Unless they exceed my wildest dreams and U of A can't give me any financial aid at all I'm very excited to end up at Phoenix. Unfortunately, I was emailing back and forth with Keli at Phoenix and because the scholarship application isn't even out yet it's unlikely that we'll hear back before the May 15th deadline. I think that Phoenix (can't really speak for Tucson, didn't get as great a vibe from them when I interviewed) has been wonderful up until this point with assisting students but it seems just ridiculous to me that something as important as scholarship possibility isn't made available until AFTER we have to choose the school we end up at.

👍 It would be kind of like not knowing the tuition of the school you're going to attend until after you have to decide. Scholarship money can be the difference between going to one school and going to another. No one is going to care about paying 70k a year for med school if they get a 70k per year scholarship to that school.
