I intend to contact the admissions office but I didn't want to harass them until next week. Does anyone know if this would be possible?

It would just be nice to see the school again one more time before I make the commitment of buying a house in Phoenix! (And withdraw from my other options.) I know I have until May, but I want to finalize the decision and move long before school starts. It would suck to still be trying to sell my house in Colorado while I'm in med school!

Hey,

Contact admissions. We do have a test that Friday, but I'd be happy to show you around if everyone else is freaking out about the test. 😎 I think it will be a brief morning for us, since do have a test and all.

I'll PM you.

And, good call on getting things started right away. I bought a house in the middle of this my semester, and I about killed myself because of it. Sooooo stressful. It will be nice to be settled beforehand.

If we were to send UA our transcripts from this semester, should we send it through snail mail or email? Or is it necessary at all?

hi everyone,
Is there a way to check our status for UoA?
Have they sent out OOS interview invitations yet?
Thanks 🙂

yes. they have sent out (and have been and will continue to send out) OOS interview invitations. upon completion of your application, you should get an email that your application is complete.

Email. Last year they requested that we send them in, but I don't know about this year.

Just got a PHX acceptance!!!
OOS but I go to U of A
interviewed Sept 17 (If I remember correctly)

Haven't heard from Tucson yet

Good luck everybody!

Did they send out acceptances today? I didn't even realize I was supposed to be nervous!

Phoenix back-fills their slots, so when one opens up, like from a person who has decided to attend Tucson or another school entirely, they send out the acceptance immediately. Tucson does not appear to do this. So while the official acceptance day is not until next Friday, we could all hear from Phoenix at any time.

Strangely enough, I had a dream recently where I was being adopted by Jerry Jones. I am not a Dallas Cowboys fan, and the only thing I could think of asking for with an eccentric billionaire as my new father was for him to donate a large quantity of money to the UofA so they would let me in to their med school. 3 years of applying and I still can't shake dumb dreams like that.

Three years sounds rough. I seriously hope you are rewarded for your dedication with an acceptance this year! Good luck! :luck:

To current students, how is the medical insurance provided by the medical school? Is it the same thing you would get as an undergrad, or is it better? Also, will it cover a spouse? I appreciate your help, thanks!

Accepted to the Phx campus today!!!!! OOS, interviewed October 14th.

It's the same as undergrad, provided by Aetna. Here's a link with a lot more details:

http://www.health.arizona.edu/webfiles/insurance_spring2010.html

I know some schools include insurance in the tuition/fees, but UA doesn't so the rates listed on the website are what you pay.

Thanks! I currently have the Aetna student insurance at ASU, and I frankly think it sucks. I hope my wife can find a job teaching in Tucson, and we can just both be on that insurance. Does any one know what the prospects for teaching in Tucson look like? Or maybe she could get a job working at UA, and I could get my tuition reduced to like a couple hundred a year...

Accepted to the Phx campus today!!!!! OOS, interviewed October 14th.

Congrats!!! Did you only apply to Phoenix? I want to see more people getting accepted and going to Tucson, so I know who my future classmates will be!!! C'mon people, Tucson campus is great too! I feel like there is a Phoenix bias here on SDN (maybe its just in my head).

Congratulations. I guess this mean two OOS students (as far as we know on SDN) have turned down offers from Phoenix.

I don't know if any of the current students know the answer to this question: There have been two release dates thus far so does that mean 4 positions have been awarded to OOS students?

I'm not a current student, but I would guess about 2 OOS students each time have been accepted. I think that would make about 25% of the accepted people so far OOS. Perhaps a more relevant question is: if an OOS applicant withdraws, do they fill that spot with another OOS student, or just any other applicant?

It's because phx is just way better. You made a terrible mistake in choosing Tucson. jk  Actually, it's probably just because I'm such an SDN *****. One of the applicants a few days ago asked me if I was "MadEvans from SDN" since it's so similar to my real name. MerryJ just needs to get his stuff together and be a better Tucson cheerleader. 😎

Perhaps a more relevant question is: if an OOS applicant withdraws, do they fill that spot with another OOS student, or just any other applicant?

I doubt UA's admissions is this systematic and formulaic. In choosing applicants to admit, they always look at the whole package and not just the numbers, test scores, etc. So I doubt they have a "set number" of OOS students they are shooting for and immediately try to replace one with another; more likely, they admit the "next best applicant" from their entire list. I also wouldn't expect them to only admit a certain number of OOS students each round, either. Just speculating here though...

 That hurts...now to go sit in the dark and cry while writing poetry 🙁

MadEvans, why must you hurt me so?
The answer to this, I really must know
I'll cut myself to stop the tears
The pain will be gone with a few more beers

Its a work in progress. These things take more than 30 seconds to perfect.

You're probably right. I think as applicants we like to make this whole process a lot more systematic than it really is. They'll probably just use a random number generator :meanie:

That was beautiful, Irk 😛

And when I was applying last year, I felt like SDN was biased toward Tucson... leave it to Mad to remedy that! Nah, but really, I was very torn between the two and think that both are fantastic.

Thanks, I could easily put myself through med school by selling my poems 😎

I imagine later in the season things will shift in favor of Tucson, if for no other reason than simply numbers (ie Tucson accepts more than twice as many people as Phoenix). I also really liked both of these schools, but I'm sure you can guess which one I liked more...

Hahahahahaha... this brought me right back to my high school emo days. Beautiful.

Nah, Tucson speaks for itself. I guarantee more people will choose the Tucson campus over the Phoenix campus in the end... 😛

I don't know about that... 😎 we'll see how introducing OOS students changes this.

No, I applied to both but haven't heard anything from tucson yet. I'm not sure yet which campus I'll pick if I'm accepted to both.

To all those who are blessed with the fortunate problem of having to choose between campuses-

I grew up in the Phoenix area but have been in Tucson my entire adult life. I have also toured both campuses three times. My opinion has always been that your education will be what you make of it no matter which campus you go to, so I make my decision based solely on which city I would rather live in. If I get accepted to both campuses, I am going to Phoenix without a moment's hesitation. It may be strictly my opinion, but after 17 years in Phoenix and 7 in Tucson, I just think that Phoenix is overall a better place to live and raise a family. Now, if you want the college atmosphere and still have some partying to do before you decide you are getting too old for it, Tucson is your place.

Of course, I would desperately like to stay in Tucson for another 4 years if they accept me and Phoenix doesn't.

To add my view point to mathlink's

I definitely agree with the idea that your education is what you make of it for the most part. The reason I chose Tucson is because it is more well established in the different fields. One example of this is that Phoenix is just now having its first class of students starting clinicals. Now I know that UA-Tucson students have been coming up for years and doing rotations in Phoenix, but that seems very different to me than having a full class of students doing rotations in Phoenix. I don't foresee that being a major issue, but it could potentially be a problem. Another thing is that in looking around the website, I found a number of different electives for the field I am most interested in (ortho) all down in Tucson. I imagine I could get something like that setup in Phoenix, but who knows how it would turn out. I guess depending on your point of view this could be good or bad. The good part is that in Phoenix, they have a lot of flexibility and are very open to suggestions from the students. This IS a huge selling point for that program, and it is something they are able to do thanks to the smaller class size (also a big plus). I think in the end, I chose the school that will be right for me, but as I'm sure you can tell, I really really liked both of these programs.

All good points. I just figure that Phoenix's lack of a match list and rotation experience won't be much of an issue by the time we get to that stage in our education.

I don't imagine it will be. On the topic of rotations, I really liked that the Tucson campus was literally attached to the main hospital for rotations. I didn't like the idea of having to drive all over Phoenix for various rotations, because Phoenix is huge and the traffic sucks, especially at rush hour (although not as bad as LA, but we all know California is a terrible place 😀). The same thing is true for research for me. Since I am interested in ortho, I would love to do some sort of ortho research. The problem I saw at Phoenix was that the main research going on at that campus was related to TGen. Now as with other things related to UA-Phoenix, I am sure I could have found some relevant research in the Phoenix metro area, but I just wasn't sure where.

There we go again with our SDN bias for UA phx. 😎 Looks like you're all alone again, Irk... 😀

And just to address this as a current UA phx student... The teaching hospitals in the valley are relatively clustered. St. Joe's, Banner Good Sam, and Maricopa MC are all within about 10 miles (or less) of one another. So, yes, you will drive a bit... but, I just figure you'll get a lot of different experiences from a variety of medical centers.

Also, the research part... from my experience so far. I'm working with a group of neurologists at a clinical research center, and when I told them what I was interested in and asked what they were currently working on, they honestly mentioned 10 or more projects that they currently are working on that I could involve myself in. I'm not doing research on-site like some others I know are, but there is a ton of stuff out there (both on-site and off-site). And the best part is, we have a dedicated program to involve students in research, and researchers/clinicians all over the valley are aware of this. In fact, an email from a clinician at Barrow Neurological Institute a couple months ago was forwarded that mentioned all of the research projects that him and his colleagues are currently working on.

I'm sorry I can't offer much perspective from Tucson. I don't mean to sound biased, but fact of the matter is... I am. I really love my school's set up and I (obviously) enjoy letting everyone know about it. OK, I've got to study... test this Friday! 😱

Oh, by the way, has anyone started an accepted UA class of 2014 Tucson/Phoenix thread yet to talk more about these kinds of things? I know everyone is probably still stressing about admissions (like I was last year), but last year it was a good way last year to separate all of the non-MadEvans-like "OoOoOoh it feels so good to be accepted, I just turned down Hopkins and Harvard to go to UA with my full scholarship" and the MadEvans-like "WHY THE $%# WON'T UA ACCEPT ME?" sentiments. 🙂

Ok. Now seriously, it's study time.

I am all for this new thread. I feel like this forum has become a discussion between a couple people accepted and 1st and 2nd year medical students, whereas most of us who read it are still waiting to be accepted 🙂

I know you were partially being sarcastic here, but does UA actually give out full scholarships? That would be sweet. If so, where do I sign up, or is it automatically determined?

Oh, and I am glad you are biased towards Phoenix. It shows you really love your school. I hope where ever I end up next year, I am as passionate about my school as you are.

Lastly, where would one start an accepted UA Class of 2014 thread? In the Allo. forums? Am I allowed to post there as an MS0? I don't feel allopathic yet...

😳 I'm sorry. If I had my way you'd all be accepted, so no one would feel left out. I just thought it would be better overall for us to keep everything about UA in one location, so if there are people with the same questions they can find the answer in this one thread. Sorry for hijacking the thread guys.

:hijacked:

Ok, I went ahead and explored the allopathic forum and found similar class threads to the one described above. I made one specifically for those of us who have been accepted to the class 2014, and I would love if any and all available current UA-med students would check that thread from time to time to help answer any questions us accepted folks might have.

Here's the link to the thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=9102423#post9102423

So... this Friday, right everyone? It's our turn to be excited!

Yes, Tara said that after the Dec. 18th acceptance date, the next would be Jan. 15th. I believe that she also said that acceptances would be given every two weeks following the Jan. 15th date, but I'm not positive about that!

As seen here, Tara said it would be the 15th, which is this Friday. It was the 18th of December that you might be thinking of.

:xf: I'll be crossing my fingers for all of you on Friday! I hope its an all SDN acceptance date. Good luck :luck::luck::luck:

ah....i believe i have misspoken and stand corrected. thanks!

So did everybody get the reminder to do the FAFSA today? It's sent to every applicant about this time of year, regardless of admissions status. I always fall for it because I read that I have an email from the UofA COM and I get really excited, then I remember it's just about financial aid...sigh...maybe tomorrow? Good luck everyone.

Hoping to hear something soon too!

I didn't get that email. Thanks for warning me though! I would have been terribly let-down if I saw that. Now I know that I might be expecting mine tomorrow too.

Good luck everyone! Here's to hoping we all get in!

Anybody get any news yet? Usually the acceptances are out by a few minutes after 9...😕

How do they notify us? via email? snail mail? do you think its possible to get a NO today or do they send those out later?

They will notify you via email. And they will not send out any rejections (if you've interviewed) until the very end. I asked that very question at my interview. Good luck!

I still have nothing in my inbox... I'm keeping my fingers crossed they're just late on the emails.

do they normally send out emails first thing in the morning?

From what I can remember, they have always sent out their correspondence by about 9:30. It's also very unusual for nobody to have posted their acceptance to SDN by now, so maybe they are doing it a little bit later today. Knowing that they read this forum (at least in the Phoenix office), perhaps they just want to see us get nervous first.

I was accepted to Phoenix via email at 8:33AM...now I have to try to decided between Phoenix and Tucson... 2 weeks, yikes! 😕 but, YAY!🙂

Anyone from the phoenix campus 12/21 group hear anything today?
