Sorry I had to reincarnate myself since I ran out of attachment space under my old log on.

Here is the first plot for 2010 Tucson WL. I will plot up the first 5-6 points then turn it over to madein.

The purpose of this plot is to allow folks to take their WL number and gauge when/if they might expect a call.

After the first 3-4 points I will put up your first trend line.

Like prior years there will be two trend lines. The first is for the go-slow period up to about the end of April and then a second for the go fast period up till early-june. The trend line is meant to dampen out smaller swings in WL spot movement from week to week.

After plotting 3-4 points in the go fast period (say by early may) you should be able to put up the second trend line and get a very good estimate of where we will wind up (say +/- 3 spots) in early-june. This will allow people on the bubble to make/follow-through with their alternative plans.

Data Analysis

Last year we had a fast start with 4 called off of the WL on the first day. So 13 after the first couple of days is very impressive but it is not indicative of the expected rate of WL movement - it only sets a starting point

The majority of these initial thirteen were likely required to fill declines from OOS'ers in the primary acceptance group. The primary acceptance group probably had close to the max 25% OOS'ers and it is likely we will see even higher than normal declines from these OOS'ers as we move closer to early may when they see all of their choices open up.

As I mentioned before it is likely that a small fraction (much less than 25%) of folks on the tucson WL are OOS'ers. So I do not expect too much of a change from previous years in terms of decline rates off of the WL - that is WL accepts typically stick.

As in prior years a very large fraction of the churn in WL spots comes from small numbers of declines out of Tucson/Phx and then the interplay of the separate Phx and Tucson waitlists backfilling.

The Tucson Adcoms will likely learn from this year in trying to pick OOS'ers who are more likely to stick next year. Kudos again to the Adcoms for keeping this years WL process open/transparent and humane.

First Prediction

My moderately conservative prediction is we will likely get to about 63 on the WL this year. We will probably see 30 by the end of april.

I think those holding spots 50 and lower should be pretty comfortable about their chances this year. They might want to start thinking strategically about housing, parking and investigating federal/private loan providers.

Attachments

Local, do you have any knowledge on how the PHX wait list has moved around in the past? Does being OOS help or hurt my chances?

I would guess that your chance of getting into Phx as an OOS'er is much better than Tucson. Since Phx seems to be keeping a separate WL for OOS, they can pull off OOS'ers as needed to get to their targeted percentage.

Tucson is different they have one WL with likely very few OOS'ers on it.

Apart from the Phx having only about 42% of the seats that Tucson has, OOS'ers have a better chance of getting in there off of the WL.

Since Phx is more secretive about their WL process it is hard to tell exactly how they pull people off. If you are an OOS'er and strongly committed to going to Phx then I would make sure that they know that.

Since madevans made if off of the WL in Phx last year you might PM him for some advice - he likely has more insight about it.

nonlocality

For anyone who hasn't gone through last year's posts, nonlocality was pretty accurate once he had a few points to work with - and even before that. Last year's admissions process was different from 2008's in some regards, and his very 1st prediction was really conservative - he recognized that at the time and estimated it could go as high as it actually ended up. Even from the first few days, estimate ranges of 8-10 spots (ie 50-58) that he gave always contained the final number.

This year is also different from last year (harder to predict), but I trust even his single number estimates (like 63) will be close - within a few spots of the ultimate landing spot.

You da man nonlocality! Thanks! 😀

Yes! Thanks a lot man. 😀

Seeing those predictions keeps me optimistic, even though I know they are just predictions.

But, I am actually starting to get excited because I am feeling like this whole medschool thing might actually happen for me! Woooo!

For those keeping track of such things, I got accepted in Tucson on 2/19 and rejected from Phoenix on 3/15.

It was a bit strange to me that I wouldn't even make the waitlist at Phoenix given that I was accepted at Tucson. I even felt that my interview at Phoenix was the better of the two. Oh well.

Good luck to all of you on both lists. I have a feeling that there will be a lot of movement in the coming month.

I agree! I know that for most of us this has been our dream for a really long time to go to medical school and it is mind blowing to consider the possibility that it might actually happen!!!
I was also thinking how weird and funny it will be if I do get in to see some of you guys in class! Then we will have to start referring to each other by our real names instead of by SDN screen name or WL number ha ha 🙂

Well, I'm Erik. Erik Handberg at ASU on facebook if you care to find me. I don't buy into this whole anonymity thing, so... feel free! I will also start signing my posts like I sign my emails. I do it by habit sometimes and still find myself erasing it, but I will stop!

But, I was talking to a RL friend who is going to Tucson next semester and she said that she is gonna go check out the campus with me soon. I'm really excited. I am getting myself very pumped up about the idea. I want to go there so badly! I am also gonna go to 2nd look somehow, some way, and I'm gonna be looking for roommates. So, if any of you see a guy riding a dirtbike with 2 supermodels on it - that's me. Come say hello. 😎 (Their names are Francesca and Sophia, and you can say hi to them too if you like.)

haha.......are they single?

you're hilarious. lol.

Ha ha that would actually be really funny if I saw you driving by Eric!

The campus is beautiful, I don't know how anybody couldn't like it 🙂

Oh and my name is Allysa by the way, just so everyone knows.

When is second look? Are they pretty chill about letting anyone tag along (like a WLer)?

I think I'll still call some of you by your SDN username every once in a while, just for old times sake! 😛

SPEAK to me, SmokeyGray; SPEAK to me ilovewater! I want to HEAR good news from you!!! :soexcited:

I actually have a cool/useful day planned, so I will post it for inspiration! Go out and DO something today! I'm talking to you MIR! Your blood pressure is probably bordering on volcano eruptus. (Technical Term)

1- Contain this apartment. Heavy Metal + Kitchen Cleaning = 👍
2- Go teach neuroscience review
3- Go buy an array of fancy beer 🙂luck🙂
4- Go use my (FREE) ticket to go see Flogging Molly St. Paddy's show!
5- Hang with my roommate, possibly Rock Band!

I really want to hear good news from me too!!

I suppose I will introduce myself. My name is Jamie Fleming. I didn't use SDN until recently, mostly because I wanted to avoid crushing my self esteem..jk...kind of... 😉

Anyway, I graduated from ASU with a finance degree in 2007. After graduating, I took a fellowship position with the NIH. I have been doing research on obesity and type 2 diabetes ever since. I also like horses and ultimate frisbee a whole lot 😀

Jamie, did you interview at PHX on Sept 21st? I did, and your background sounds familiar - that's awesome that you've been working at NIH. I'm guessing you'll find out this week - I was just hoping you'd find out today 😀 I like ultimate also! I actually like most sports where I can get out and run around a lot (it's funny how it's so much more pleasant doing sprints when I'm chasing a ball/frisbee/opponent than when it's just for the sake of sprinting).

Erik, thanks for the concern 🙂 I'm going to let nonlocality take care of the calculations. I've definitely been in a lighter mood, I think I got a lot of stress out - and having my English paper done tonight will definitely help. I decided that I'd predict that the WL moves as far as there are teams in the NCAA tournament. :horns:

Shall we have a tourney challenge?!? I'm not sure how we'd do it on SDN - does ESPN have pdf's you can download and fill out? We could fill them out and post them on here. Does ESPN's scoring system double the points for each progressive round you correctly predict?

Gotta get studying. I've decided that there's at least a decent (50%?) chance I'll get in. Here's to hopin' I WILL be everyone's future classmate!

HAHAHA WOW! I laughed really hard when I watched this. Fortunately, I also like frisbee, so I am much more likely to have horse pictures intermixed with discs Ive collected from tournaments 😉

Rusti, That's awesome that you also play Ultimate! Unfortunately, I recently had surgery after tearing my ACL, so I will be watching from the sidelines until mid summer. Do you live anywhere near Tempe? There is alot of Ultimate going on around the valley. I normally play club, pick up, and in a co-ed league. If you're interested in coming out to play, you can check out www.vots.org or contact me. The frisbee community is so much fun!

Oh- and I interviewed in Phx on Oct 14. So...maybe I have a long lost twin or something??!

Yea, I thought of the new Scrubs character when she said that too!

And, I never got into sports enough to participate in the brackets and things. That would be an interesting exercise in stats though. I will try to predict things knowing nothing about the teams, only based on their W/L records and any other info. We'll see if I win!

Did any of you interview with the librarian like I did. Golly, what a school.

Thamsenman's icon makes it very difficult to have this window open when other people are around! They are going to think I am doing something that is VERY much not what I am doing. Thanks for that!

Admit it, I turn you on! 😎

Little do you know that is actually a picture of me, from my days spent as a security guard for Madonna. I thought it was sort of weird she made me take me shirt off all the time, but it was much weirder that I had to be covered in oil.

Weirdest of all was that she made Guy Ritchie do the oiling.

Finally caved and subscribed to SDN after months of avoidance (I've got enough stress already ... jk). Currently on the waitlist for Tucson @ spot #20, and am getting more and more excited with every passing day! My cell phone is permanently attached to my hip until I get the call from admissions... Good luck to all on the WL!

Putting in my post for the morning. I really don't like the whole Daylight Savings Time - I'll be glad to be back in 'Zona soon (graduate the end of April)!

I dreamt last night that both SmokeyGray and ilovewater got a call today 😀 Come on Tucson, make my dreams come TRUE! Lucky St. Patrick :luck: :xf:

Because we have SmokeyGray and ilovewater at 14 and 16, I probably wont call this week - b/c we can assume it's still at 13 unless we hear from them.

I called Tucson yesterday and Anna (I believe that's her name) told me that second look day is in April and that only accepted students can go, so no WL people. Hopefully some of you at the front of the WL will be called in time to go 🙂
Also, since I was on the phone I asked what number the WL was at just to confirm and it was still at #13 as expected.
Hope everyone has a great day and that you are not stressing too much!

It's great to hear that there has been so much Tucson WL movement. I am anxious for all of you. Do we know if Phoenix is still WLing people. Or has everyone been told of their status already? Does anyone if there has been any Phoenix WL action as of yet? Any friend of a friend been accepted recently?

MadE, is there a WL dance that you would recommend?

My prof showed up half an hour late to class b/c campus pretty much shut down during BYU's game (he was watching the game in his office) . . . It's been 17 years since we advanced past the first round. I'm hoping it's a 'Danny Ainge'-ish sort of year 😀 Though KSU is looking good.

I will forever hate Danny Ainge for leaving John Paxson open and costing the Suns the title in '93.

In 2nd and 3rd grade I was probably too busy rollerblading to pay any attention to that. You know, rollerblading with supermodels. I like to do all things with supermodels. Why? Because I'm cool. How cool?

Smirk and Sunglasses cool. 😎

I REALLY want to be a Wildcat . . . Come ON TUCSON! If I get in to either campus, I promise to take every SDNer here, out to eat the week before school - on my honor, cross my heart, hope to cry 🙂

How about yesterday's March Madness? Pretty awesome 😎 It'll be hard to top that today. I think it's funny that we call it a great day when 7 of 16 lower ranked teams advance. I agree though, it obviously makes things more interesting - though my bracket is worthless now, but that's ok.

Come on, just one more spot to wrap up the week! Go SmokeyGray!

I imagine that being SmokeyGray right now must be like being perpetually at the top of a rollercoaster drop...you're so close and it'll be so awesome when you finally reach the bottom, but until then your heart's all the way up in your throat...

Still nothing! This is SO like a roller coaster...probably the most sickening one I've ever been on. I even went to six flags and rode the X2 a few weeks ago...

I think the worst part is trying to explain it to other people that keep asking me about getting in to medical school.

me: "well, I am almost in to UA"
everyone: "huh?! Almost in? What?"
me: "alernate list, #14"
everyone: "what is the alternate list? so you might get in? is #14 good?"
me: "Yes, its good, they normally go through 50+ people on the list"
everyone: "so, you are almost good enough, kind of like a backup..so when will you know?"
me: "ugh"

I feel like I have this conversation several times daily!!!!

Yea, but seriously though... when are you gonna get in? I mean, today? Or next week? How come you don't just call them and tell them that you're really dedicated? Do they know that you volunteered at a hospital?

Did you try asking them to move you up the waitlist?

Tell them that you got letters of recommendation from your professors! That's pretty impressive!

Love,
Dad

I can't go for a hike because I am in here taking care of Heather. She just got 4 wisdom teeth removed. I'm taking care of her and watching movies with her!

Also, my laptop doesn't get the internet on hikes.

😀

So, still no movement from 13 huh? 👎

Wow, I get back in town from spring breaking and find like a thousand new posts on here. I finally found the time to get caught up. Great to see the quick start early on the WL, but not so good to see the phx rejections.

And, just out of curiosity, is there anyone who still reads this who would be interested in me as a roommate at PHX or at Tucson? And, LRK, is it presumptuous of me to ask that on the "accepted" boards since I am not accepted yet? 😀

Sorry, I wasn't trying to ignore your question directed at me, but it was on the first day I went out of town. I guess I can answer it now in case its still important to you, even though its like 4 days later. You are certainly welcome to post your questions on the accepted thread, but I will warn you that most of the people who post on there also post here regularly.

That sounds frustrating, but some of those questions are really funny...

This will not be forgotten. Where are we going? I think Outback would be fun. Anybody else got any ideas for where MIR should take us?

Yes. hahaha. exactly!

People say hilarious things when they have no concept of the medical application process!

Chuckbox! Its an epic establishment.

Is it that place right by ASU on University? Is there even enough parking for all of us? If I'm thinking of the right place, every time I have been in that parking lot there is no where to park.

Yes. hahaha. exactly!

People say hilarious things when they have no concept of the medical application process!

This is true, but at the same time you should take some of the blame. For this whole week, the WL has been at #13, and you're #14. I mean, what the heck are you waiting on? Frankly, you're being a bit rude to everyone else...geez 😛

I wonder what the longest time is that the Tucson WL has gone without movement before? Anyone know?

Hey I read these boards on and off and am really rooting for you guys.

If anyone wants to be my 'guest' on second look day at Tucson, just let me know. I live in Phoenix and we could just meet there at the school.

Just in case someone really wanted to go. 🙂

Yes.

The Futterwacken. AKA the mad hatter dance.

DISCLAIMER... If you haven't seen the new Alice in Wonderland yet, then you may not want to watch this just yet.

Also, I'm not sure about the wait list movement. I'll try to ask around next week, but chances are you'll know before I will. I've been too busy spring breaking it... kinda hard to keep up with all this post activity.

Good luck guys. Don't stress too much about the wait list movement. If you haven't alreadey, start planning your senior/last-summer-before-med-school-starts trip!

I wonder what the longest time is that the Tucson WL has gone without movement before? Anyone know?

Couldn't tell you for sure, but last year it stayed at 17 for about two weeks. I'm REALLY hoping that doesn't happen this year. If we can just stay ahead of '09 by at least 5 or 6 spots until May 1st, I'll be happy (FYI, '09 was at 10 after two weeks). Come on BABY! MOVE!
