has anybody heard good news today??

are there still people waiting to hear back?? no email. no phone call.. and no balls to call Brian either. so i guess i'll keep waiting.

im a bit puzzled. interviewed april 8.

Awwwww...you really should. He is so nice and understanding. During my interview day, he must have told us to call him a dozen times. I honestly think he enjoys seeing the students show interest. I don't know how you can just sit around all day waiting to hear something knowing you can easily call and find out...I would be going insane! Good luck though, hope to see you at revisit 🙂

(btw, if you haven't gotten an email yet, that's a really good sign! Evidently they go out in the morning. He told us that sometimes calls aren't made until the late afternoon...it's whenever Dean Kelly has time to call people. Keep that hope alive! :xf: )

anyone know how UCSD students fare in competitive specialties such as opthalmology and ENT?
There weren't too many who matched, but I wasn't sure if this was by choice or b/c of an inability to get in...
if any current students could comment on this, that would be great
also if there are any statistics on match satisfaction, that would also be much apppreciated

I don't know if we have a survey on match satisfaction, but in terms of specialties, we had 3 in Ophthalmology, 2 Ent, 3 Derm, 10 Anesthesia, 6 Ortho, 10 Radiology, 2 Radiation Oncology, 3 Neurology, and others that I'm not listing. Most people who go into internal med. will probably be specializing.

As far as east coast matching goes, I think this is very self-selective. The majority of people want to stay in CA. But, we do have students that go to the east coast, including Hopkins, Harvard, and Yale.

Alternate List. FML! Did anyone get in today? C'mon Brian, I know you like giving good news, so give me some!

I don't know how it was this year, but when I was a 4th year, 3 people failed to match in their specialty of choice. Only one of those three had applied to a "competitive" specialty (neither ophtho nor ENT). All 3 are currently in highly competitive residency programs (2 at UCSF, 1 at UCSD) so things seem to have worked out.

Almost everyone I knew matched their #1 or #2 (or so they claimed).

Hey guys! Is anyone down to carpool to the 2nd look event? I'm in Bakersfield. I'd prefer to be a passenger, but I can get a rental car to be a driver. This application cycle has taken a toll on the wallet lol

I am driving down from Vegas on Friday morning. Bakersfield is no where near my route, but if you want meet me somewhere along my route and ride with me the rest of the way, I will gladly accept the company 🙂 I have a Prius, so gas isn't a huge issue anyway. I have to be there by noon, though, because I have a couple of research interviews lined up before the actual revisit. PM me if you want to try and coordinate something.

Bummer! I am so sorry to hear that. I was really hoping for an exciting round of acceptances. I wonder who was accepted today...I haven't heard of any new people. I hope you make it off the alternate list though! You seem so excited about the program 😳

awww its ok =)

im sure movement will come along soon and lets just hope we're on that top section of the pool. may 15 couldnt be here soon enough.

May 15th is the day by which all applicants must determine their final acceptance and withdraw from all acceptances. Since a lot of applicants are complete pricks, they wait until the last minute. As such, thousands of spots open up on May 15th, and a trickle down process starts where students get off waitlists, withdraw from their previous acceptance, forcing that school to take someone off the waitlist, etc.

It's basically a miserable process that I'm so frustrated to be a part of.

Sorry if you consider people like me one of these... at least I've narrowed it down to 2, that's got to count for something, right? It is a really tough decision that I know I need this much time to make, as I'm sure others are experiencing as well in wanting to go to revisits and wait for financial aid to come through...

I completely understand your position - don't let people make you feel bad about it.

-acceptable poolee

to piggy back off this amazing guy...hahaha he's my classmate...People do select to stay on the west coast. Being competitive to top east coast residency training programs was one of my primary concerns when making my final decision. And after talking to a couple of residency program directors back at UPenn I am quite convinced that UCSD is well respected back east.

Also, just to point this out: Many of those students who matched in those competitive specialties Penguick mentioned matched in top programs....Mayo for Ortho (1), Iowa for Optho (1), Beth Israel for Gen Surg (1)...and top programs for other specialities as well

Best of luck to you guys!

There are some schools I've been accepted to that I KNOW I won't attend. Why do I hang onto them? Because I can and because I earned the opportunity to keep them. It's as simple as that. Don't like the system? Tough luck.

wow. whenever someone creates those "let go of your acceptances" threads, i usually argue that nobody is really holding on to them just because they can and because they just enjoy being able to count their acceptances every day.

i guess i was wrong.

whoops, I guess my sarcasm didn't convey too well... that's not really my view. sorry all. I know how frustrating it is. good luck!

Where's the sarcasm? Are you really holding onto spots you KNOW you don't want?

Just withdrew here, hope one of you gets the spot. UCSD is an amazing medical school!

Hi all!

I just got home from revisit. It was a ton of fun 🙂
~120 prospys showed up, but a few said they were going elsewhere. A bunch of people recognized me as "that girl that always posts on the thread even though she's already accepted", haha. Glad to know I've earned creeper status before class even begins 🙄

Anything you guys want to know about revisit? I will gladly share. This is all you really need to know though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10NIZgkDaMM 😉

Haha another "State of Mind" med school-version youtube video? Do all med schools make their own version of this song? Here's hopkins': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuaGhVskb-I

Haha, wow...I did not realize there were so many. I found a couple law school ones too. Is it just me, or is the Hopkins one just a tad bit pretentious? I guess it's good to have school pride, but I was happy to see the UCSD one was more about med school than bragging about the credentials of the school. The "I got into Hopkins, I could get in anywhere" seemed kinda cocky to me 😳 (then again, it's probably true...)

Well, yes. But not because I can, but because you never know when something might change. Maybe an angel will come to me in my dreams before May 15th and tell me to go to one of the schools that I currently don't plan on attending. You never know.

does anyone know if people from the acceptalbe pool will be called on the phone and status page updated if they r accepted? thanks

i think, based on last year's thread, they call and/or send you an email letting you know

:luck:!

i was just looking at last year's thread and it looks like everything happened earlier last year regarding the acceptable pool ie the email asking you if you are still interested was already sent out at the end of april, they started rejecting people off the acceptable pool by the end of april

i wonder why they're doing everything so late this year

i think second look was at the beginning of april last year, and so maybe having it ~3 weeks later this year pushed things back a bit

Is it just me or is LAman a big dbag?

Nah, you're probably mistaken. I think most of my friends and my parents would vouch that I'm not a dbag. My point is, everyone has their own reasons--however ludicrous--of keeping their acceptances until May 15th. If you didn't get accepted, you have no right to tell them to relieve their acceptances. They earned them, and they can keep them.

You're right, no one has the right to tell you to drop your hard-earned acceptances. But a hallmark of a dbag is that they aren't considerate of others. If one were to hold on to acceptances at schools they knew full well they wouldn't attend unless the hand of god came down and smacked them across the face...well..that isn't being considerate.

Anyhow, May 15th is right around the corner! It seems UCSD hasn't started sending out the rejection notices yet.

Yep, I am excited to see who gets in! I am really rooting for Diva 🙂

I officially turned down my other offers today, and I signed a lease with ARCH housing. Moving to San Diego on May 13, and I couldn't be more excited. I hope to see you all next year! 😍

Yeah, I got a research position so I decided to go early. I am STOKED! 😀

Thanks for the tip about the beach- good to know! Now I just need to buy furniture...my apartment will be empty when I get there...

what research are you doing?

amcas even sent an email weeks ago saying u should not hold onto acceptances unless you are seriously considering going there- just to clarify

I hope to see some movement for you too!! :luck:

I will be working in a cardiac physiology lab studying ischemic preconditioning. This is work I could have never done back home, so I am super excited!

Are you living in campus housing?

Yep- I got a great apartment in One Miramar with a southwest view of the city and "a great ocean breeze" according to the housing rep 😍

(I asked her which apartment she would choose for herself if she were to move there...seemed to work well)

Yeah, I agree with everyone here. I withdrew from Dartmouth yesterday because I am 100% certain I wouldn't choose that offer over UCSD. I see the point about "I've earned these acceptances, they're mind to hold on to.." but at the same time, it's just inconsiderate. For me- part of going into medicine is having general compassion for others and the opportunity to work with like-minded people. It concerns me when people behave this way 🙄

I have to agree with you. =)

lol. santa anas winds, yes...dry, hot, yuck winds. i dunno, just commenting, maybe sd is protected more by a marine layer of fog or by the on-shore breeze than i remember. (i don't hate ppl from santa ana tho)

violincuty - that sounds very interesting!

but Santa Ana's are offshore!!! you obviously don't surf because every surfer I know can't wait for a good Santa Ana, especially if there is swell at the same time

It's kind of funny -- earlier in the year, I checked my mail every day praying to get a letter, because I wanted to hear good news. Now I check my mail and I'm relieved to not get anything because I know it can only be bad.

Also, even though May 15th is the important day, it's a Saturday, so I'm pretty sure no one is going to hear anything from UCSD 'til the 17th. Crazy enough, that's the day I graduate. Maybe I'll get a call while I'm accepting my diploma, haha.

haha - yeah I guess my surfer bias got in the way, which is why I was so incredulous when she said she didn't like them.
