As just another fish swimming around in the acceptable pool, I am still hoping that I get some good news in another week or two. Is it healthy to want to go to school at UCSD so bad? Maybe. Maybe not. Either way, I'm still hoping for good news!!! :xf:

Congratulations to all of you who are already accepted. I hope that you appreciate what you have. If you don't, feel free to pass your acceptance to me. I will take great care of it for you. 😀
Same as you!

The admissions office said that less people have withdrawn applications so far compared to past years, so there may be less movement 🙁 but still hoping!

Would you go to UCLA? Based on your signature, looks like you're pretty set on UCSD anyways haha. So here's a different question: my friend who is an undergrad at UCSD and will be matriculating there next year for med school told me that it is near impossible to get graduate student housing at this point because waitlists have started for all grad students. Anyone have info on this? I'm thinking that, even if I get off the waitlist, not having housing close to campus/other students could be a dealbreaker.

your friend is wrong!

Right now we have 125 VACANCIES in just ONE of the grad housing complexes. Yes, more people will be moving in since rent was just decreased dramatically; however, even more grad housing - specifically for health science students - is being built and will be ready for move in during the fall quarter.

If recently accepted students are interested in grad housing and have placed their name on the housing dept's so called "waitlist" then they will be offered a housing spot.

ditto, here is the waitlist availability page:

https://hds.ucsd.edu/ARCH_WaitList/statistics.aspx?

I can see no less than 3 vacant units from my window right now. They are having trouble filling the grad housing because there is so much of it. Rents where I (and riceman04) live are going down 15-25% on July 1st. There is PLENTY of graduate housing available right now.

Hey guys! Did anyone hear anything about the PRIME program yet?

Any surfers who are also gonna be first years at UCSD SOM out there?

Will almost certainly be moving out there in a month or so, and looking to find some fellow med student surfers that would want to explore the breaks before school starts.

I've also heard that if you register a bike you can get a 10-day parking pass for free / cheap (perm.passes are really expensive apparently), so if four people do that and you carpool and rotate whose pass you use, you can basically park for free everyday. Perfect for surfing in the morning then carpooling to class.

So basically hoping to get a crew together to do something like that.

Also have found some great multi-bedroom houses near the beach perfect for pre-class surfing, so if it looks like we would get along, might try to grab one of those houses before they are snatched up as well.

PM me and lemme know, or post on here I guess...

Thanks!

If I get off the acceptable pool I'm in haha. But I sponge more than I surf....

Is anyone else still waiting for a financial aid offer for UCSD?

Did anyone call Brian to see how many people are left in the Acceptable Pool and how much withdraws have occurred?

you know what we need? an inside source. preferably a med student since kick them off a waitlist.

rice man, can you help us?

kick what off a waitlist?

since the committee *can't* kick current med students off a waitlist like they can to us, med students should ask these questions and then pass the info along to us. i have a fear of being overly annoying by calling too often. combine this w/ bad english made my earlier post stupid. my fault, lol.

I just got my estimate last week. If you have not heard anything from the financial aid office, I would email Carol to check on the status of your offer.

Hartupee, Carol ([email protected])

jadacu - every time i see your name it reminds me of jadakiss.

are you going to ucsd for sure? if so, congrats!!

i'm also waiting! i contacted carol last week and she emailed me back yesterday (a sunday, strange) to let me know that she will be getting back to me with an estimate sometime this week!

has anyone called brian to ask how big the acceptable pool is at this point?

haha when I first got the name that's the only way I could remember it

I am torn between SD and LA. I go back and forth every other day. haha

Have you set your mind on SD already?

hahahahaha...yeah...what's up! I'll ask whatever:laugh:
Yay! Ask for us if you can! I think everyone is looking to find out how many people are left on the acceptable pool after Brian sent out that email regarding who is still interested, how many acceptances are still being held at UCSD, and if offers can be expected to be sent out on Monday, the 17th.

Thanks!

normally they cut that list down...I'm surprised it is still that big

they cut it down some last week when they sent out the "are you interested" email - some people got rejected instead

Does any current UCSD student know the current/expected class size for Class of 2014?

Does any current UCSD student know the current/expected class size for Class of 2014?

Last I heard they are going to keep this year's incoming class around the 125 mark; however, I have heard discussion of them bumping that number up to 200+ in the future once the new med ed building is complete (so the class after you guys) and more $$$ is allocated to education from the state budget. We will see though.

well, if given the opportunity to go, YES. lots of reasons for me to move back to SD.

hahahahaha...yeah...what's up! I'll ask whatever:laugh:

hey riceman! just wanting to know what the count of the acceptance pool is at right now and how many are still accepted (if that info can even be given away). could you dig for some info from brian...last time i talked to him he said class was overbooked but that was over a week ago.

It's a little disappointing that most medical schools will be increasing their enrollment starting next year, not this year. Furthermore there will be more med schools in california after this year. Hopefully, they might increase the enrollment numbers this year.

im sorry if this is a stupid question but im sure i wasnt to go to san diego ... what do i do about my other acceptances on may 15th .. do i tell each school individually or do i go on amcas? thanks guys

You contact each school where you have an acceptance individually via email and tell them that you are withdrawing your application.

Congrats on your acceptances! Which school did you decide to go to?

Gave up my spot earlier today, good luck to everyone still on the waitlist!

gave up my spot on thursday. really hard decision, but good luck to everyone still waiting!

Damn. UCSD was a tough one to give up. Just withdrew my acceptance, and want to wish you all the best. UCSD SOM is truly a classy group of people.

did we have to send a deposit or something to hold our place in the class?

im kind of skeptical that it will since i think it took at least several days before it started moving last year right?

Anyone call/asked Brian to see if there is any room in the class yet? Is it still over the limit?

i called this morning and he said they still didnt know how many spots there were if there were any but that they didnt get as many people as they expected to reply no to the still interested email...so theres going to be another cut to the waitlist

I see... Did he say when this might happen?

if someone can help me out ... i keep hearing "guaranteed housing" so i signed up for ARCH and did my application. I called and they said you might get something in two to three years hahah ... I asked about "guanateed housing" and they said its guaranteed but we are just not guaranteeing the dates lol

im confused... i just want a one bedroom spot and these apartments looked great because they are cheap and close to campus (coast and mesa) ... do i have any chance of getting in or should I just forget about it and look for my 1 bedroom spot on craigslist? thanks guys

The way to jump the housing list is to find someone who wants a roommate and lives there now, though you would then be in a 2 bedroom. In mesa - central and north mesa are big enough to share, while south mesa has tiny apartments. I'm not sure about Coast, but the waitlist used to be CRAZY long.

i wanted a one bedroom as well...but apparently there are so few that it's really hard to get one. i was told by housing that one of them (coast or mesa or one of the others, i forget which) has only nine one bedroom units...so, that's why the waiting list for those are two to three years.

if you opt to share an apartment, then i believe you're pretty much guaranteed a spot by the time school starts.

so yeah, if you want a one bedroom you have to look elsewhere :/ which is what i'm doing right now!! hope this helps 🙂

he said in the next few weeks...so prob end of month

Pretty risky... most other schools will be pulling from their waitlists this week (if they haven't started already), and UCSD will take a few more weeks to REJECT more people before accepting waitlistees? Luckily for UCSD it's a good enough school that people won't lose interest becuase of the lengthy wait for movement. But really, I'd like to know something soon!
