A quick rejection would be better than this endless waiting and false hope... lol
Pretty risky... most other schools will be pulling from their waitlists this week (if they haven't started already), and UCSD will take a few more weeks to REJECT more people before accepting waitlistees? Luckily for UCSD it's a good enough school that people won't lose interest becuase of the lengthy wait for movement. But really, I'd like to know something soon!
What's up guys. Don't have much time (I have a big neuro exam tomorrow), but I want to give you an update on the waitlist movement, etc...
I talked to Brian today and he knew that I would eventually try to catch up with him to ask him questions regarding waitlist movement. LOL...it turns out our AWESOME deans (well actually one moreso than the others) actually peruse this site from time to time (especially the threads about UCSD) and noticed that a "riceman04" would probably try and find out more info....So anyway:
Brian is a great resource for you guys and when he gives you information regarding waitlist movement/etc...he is being very open and honest about the current status of the admissions process here. After talking with him today he mentioned that this year we seem to have a greater number of students who have decided to hold their place. But that does not mean there is absolutely NO chance for people to be pulled from the acceptable pool list. Furthermore, there truly is NO RANKING! Just know that ALL of you are deemed highly qualified for admission in to UCSD's 2010 entering class. And now it is just a matter of selecting students to create the most wholesome environment possible (since you all have unique experiences/stories to tell).
Sit tight guys and have some faith! Oh and be sure to put a happy face and wave for the deans
Hello Dean ___________! You are awesome BTW (by the way)

No really guys...our deans are really awesome...ALL of them
cya!
Ditto! I don't care if I have to wait all summer. UCSD has been my number one choice since the beginning and only felt better about it on my interview day. I really hope to be a part of the new class! Thanks Riceman for the recon effort!! Gluck on your test.
So no ranking but the adcom strives to create the optimal student population by pulling certain peeps off the waitlist. Alrighty, here's to hoping that I can help complete the class of 2014.
PS Hi Dean K! *pick me, pick me*

if someone can help me out ... i keep hearing "guaranteed housing" so i signed up for ARCH and did my application. I called and they said you might get something in two to three years hahah ... I asked about "guanateed housing" and they said its guaranteed but we are just not guaranteeing the dates lol
im confused... i just want a one bedroom spot and these apartments looked great because they are cheap and close to campus (coast and mesa) ... do i have any chance of getting in or should I just forget about it and look for my 1 bedroom spot on craigslist? thanks guys
Violincuty,
Can you comment on the size of the bedrooms, please?
Thank you.

Thank you for your response, violincuty.
They look at the current class composition and fill in gaps where necessary (e.g., maybe the male/female ratio is unbalanced, or the instate/outofstate ratio is unbalanced, etc). How does an unranked waiting list work?
Yep, my pleasure! I am a very enthusiastic prospy 😉
One thing you may be wondering is if it's easy to cross the freeways in order to get to campus from Miramar/Mesa. I know that worried me before I moved here. I bought a bike my first day that I park in the bike rack outside of my building, and I bike to lab every morning in less than 10 minutes! It's a beautiful ride- the weather has been incredible every day since I have been here. There are several routes to get to campus, including a bridge over the freeways and a free shuttle. There's also a really fun beach run on Black's beach with fantastic ocean views that is less than a 5-minute drive from campus with free parking. I still have a lot to learn about the school and La Jolla (only been here for 4 days!), but feel free to write if you have any more questions. If I don't know the answer, I will try to find someone who does 😀

I am assuming you go down regents and take the road along Scripps Hospital!
Welcome!!
I'm rarely at One Miramar these days...I only sleep and shower there these days...
My queen-sized bed, dresser, night stand, and desk all fit in my room...I just do not have that much space in my room though. But everything fits.
The one con about One Miramar is there is NO STORAGE SPACE
Hey Violin have you had a chance to hear and see the owls, raccoons, toads, and coyotes?
I've actually found that La Jolla Village Dr. is quicker for me- my lab is at the VA. Sounds like you're prepping for exams...good luck!!
This is very true- my roommate and I were surprised to find no closets in the common areas. However, the bathrooms and living room are spacious. We got around it by purchasing several shelving systems from Target and Ikea...yay innovativeness 🙂
I have not! I hope I do...I love animals. I was thinking about checking out the zoo eventually. Do med students ever organize trips for that sort of thing?
Also, totally random, but I thought I would throw this out there...if you do move here and do not know anyone, there are lots of ways to meet new people. Miramar has a free community breakfast one Friday out of every month. I joined several Meetup.com groups (sushi lovers, hiking, running, salsa dancing, and sailing)- I have met several nice people *outside of science* that I enjoy spending time with. I am even going sailing this Sunday for free 😀 People here seem to be exceptionally friendly and excited to be living in SD!

As soon as this waitlist starts moving, I'm just going to call every day until they get sick of me and make a decision. I just can't afford to have no plans in mid-July or something ridiculous like that.
Call Brian directly. He is one of the nicest admissions officers that I have spoken with and is willing to answer your questions. What number do you guys recommend calling for updates? Just the admission department or calling Brian directly?

Wow. I have been at one miramar since jan and NEVER knew about that breakfast.
And you should DEFINITELY check out the zoo AND wild animal park. The zoo is by far the best in country! And the wild animal park is not too shabby either.
Sometimes med students do organize group outings! As usual whatever is organized is done so through the use of the forum.
My friend called in and was told that all offers if any have been sent out already and the class is currently full, but they expect more waitlist movement. It seems that everyone calling in gets different information lately.

I concur...they might be getting ready to send out more rejections though, according to a poster above.the silent treatment is indeed the worst form of punishment

Thank you for the great suggestions! I am also 100% UCSD committed *hopes* Do you know how many of your classmates got off the waitlist last year?Hi all, I just wanted to comment about waitlist and off-campus housing - I got in off the waitlist last year in late June/early July, and the waiting was DEFINITELY excruciating. But worth it in the end! I was 100% UCSD committed, and holding an alternate acceptance. If you're like me, just be careful about housing and such - put off buying parking passes for the other school, and don't get housing until you absolutely have to. And try to keep yourself busy so you don't fret about it so constantly!
I love where I live off campus (off Nobel Dr just east of the freeway). It's a bit more $ than on-campus, but not terrible. I live here because I have a dog and that's not allowed for UCSD housing. I do like the location better than on-campus because it's more convenient to the Trader Joe's/Whole Foods/AMC complexes, and walking distance to school. And there are plenty of med students around in these complexes. It's really a great idea to find someone in your class to live with - much cheaper going the two bedroom route.

Hey Riceman! Housing questions....Is it possible to live in one of the university owned single room apts? Does UCSD even have these? I looked at the housing websites and it seems that they do exist. Is it just that the waiting list is so long that its impossible to get one?
Do some students live in off-campus housing? If so, which areas/neighborhoods are most popular? I'm sure I asked all this on interview day but can't recall anymore.
Thanks! (any updates from Brian?)

Thank you for those numbers! I hope it will look something like that this year too.I think I remember Brian telling me it was 50, and he said of those 9 were accepted after July 1st.
Hey what's up!
Getting a single on campus, from what I hear, is extremely difficult b/c the waitlist is extremely long! Everyone wants to live in the ollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllldddd Coast Apts b/c they overlook the ocean (the west facing apts overlook the ocean).
Most students actually live off-campus in the UTC or University City area: few live down in San Diego.
I actually have not seen Brian since I last talked to him. I think he is hiding from me now...LOL...j/k
When I see someone again I will check in with them.
Anyone hear anything or have some information? Really quiet.
Yep! Number one choice all the way! It does seem like there is some kind of information blackout this year regarding the acceptable pool.whenever i see your name posted on a thread in the school specific discussion list, i know it must be ucsd. lol. die-hards!!
i've got nothing new to share.

There's 102 people on the UCSD 2014 facebook group, so it does seem like the class is still overbooked (if you count the people that don't use facebook).

I think we're grasping at straws to be looking at the Facebook group. There could be any number of people still on it who have decided to go elsewhere.
Thanks for the optimism! I hope you are right. There is still a very long summer to go! Brian told me that they will continue accepting people if/when spots open up until their orientation date, which I believe he said was the beginning of September.
I'm not sure what the class size for 2014 is.
