Pretty risky... most other schools will be pulling from their waitlists this week (if they haven't started already), and UCSD will take a few more weeks to REJECT more people before accepting waitlistees? Luckily for UCSD it's a good enough school that people won't lose interest becuase of the lengthy wait for movement. But really, I'd like to know something soon!

I didn't interpret it this way. I think there's a chance they'll accept and reject concurrently, kind of like they did with the interest/reject emails. I have no inside info though.

What's up guys. Don't have much time (I have a big neuro exam tomorrow), but I want to give you an update on the waitlist movement, etc...

I talked to Brian today and he knew that I would eventually try to catch up with him to ask him questions regarding waitlist movement. LOL...it turns out our AWESOME deans (well actually one moreso than the others) actually peruse this site from time to time (especially the threads about UCSD) and noticed that a "riceman04" would probably try and find out more info....So anyway:

Brian is a great resource for you guys and when he gives you information regarding waitlist movement/etc...he is being very open and honest about the current status of the admissions process here. After talking with him today he mentioned that this year we seem to have a greater number of students who have decided to hold their place. But that does not mean there is absolutely NO chance for people to be pulled from the acceptable pool list. Furthermore, there truly is NO RANKING! Just know that ALL of you are deemed highly qualified for admission in to UCSD's 2010 entering class. And now it is just a matter of selecting students to create the most wholesome environment possible (since you all have unique experiences/stories to tell).

Sit tight guys and have some faith! Oh and be sure to put a happy face and wave for the deans

Hello Dean ___________! You are awesome BTW (by the way)
:laugh::hello::bow:

No really guys...our deans are really awesome...ALL of them

To clarify on housing situations: if you are looking for a single room, you will be pretty much guaranteed housing. No, the wait is not actually 2 years. If you want to get into Miramar, you will get it (and most likely Arris Verde too). I remember filling out one of these in late May because I procrastinated, and still got my desired move in date of late July for One Miramar.

The reason why some of the places are 2 years is because they are a bit more unique. Mesa tends to be for people with families. Coast is on the water and there are few single rooms apts there. Del Sol is a gated community (I'm not quite sure what the deal is with that).

Don't apply for single grad housing unless if you want to be in a 4 bdr/1bath place.

If you do go for Miramar or Verde, you probably won't hear back about it until a couple weeks before your move in date, so don't freak out about it.

Thanks Riceman for the recon effort!! Gluck on your test.

So no ranking but the adcom strives to create the optimal student population by pulling certain peeps off the waitlist. Alrighty, here's to hoping that I can help complete the class of 2014.

PS Hi Dean K! *pick me, pick me*

Ditto! I don't care if I have to wait all summer. UCSD has been my number one choice since the beginning and only felt better about it on my interview day. I really hope to be a part of the new class!

*Waves to the deans also*

I agree completely. Some things really are worth the wait. I am not ready to give up hope yet that I will be studying medicine at UCSD this Fall. :xf:

Every day that I am still in the acceptable pool is another day where the dream is alive!

Best of luck to everyone who is still waiting and congratulations to those talented and fortunate enough to be accepted already at UCSD. I hope you appreciate the opportunity to be part of the #1 program in the country. 👍

thanks for the info. it's nice to have facts!

does anyone know if being accepted to their prime program is still a possibility if you are pulled from the waitlist? this is the only waitlist i am still on and the the one i keep dreaming about. naturally, it's the only school i interviewed at, came home, and said "man, i'll be really sad if i don't get to go there."

however, i am slated to start another prime program at the end of june so will have to take myself off the waitlist then (if i haven't already been taken off, one way or the other).

if someone can help me out ... i keep hearing "guaranteed housing" so i signed up for ARCH and did my application. I called and they said you might get something in two to three years hahah ... I asked about "guanateed housing" and they said its guaranteed but we are just not guaranteeing the dates lol

im confused... i just want a one bedroom spot and these apartments looked great because they are cheap and close to campus (coast and mesa) ... do i have any chance of getting in or should I just forget about it and look for my 1 bedroom spot on craigslist? thanks guys

I just moved to One Miramar on Thursday and it is AWESOME here!! I am not sure about 1 bedroom spots (I think there are very few, as other people have stated), but I know that you are offered housing based on your move-in date. The earlier you make it, the more likely you are to secure housing. My roommate is a PhD candidate in biochemistry and we get along really well considering we were randomly paired up. I'd consider the 2 bdrm housing if I were you- it's nice to know someone who has been living here for a while, the prices were just decreased, and the apartments are great! Hope that's helpful...

Violincuty,

Can you comment on the size of the bedrooms, please?

Thank you.

I have a large closet with mirrored doors and a shelf with lots of storage space above it in the closet. I bought an IKEA bedroom set off of Craigslist with a full size bed/frame, computer desk, nightstand, and a large dresser...it all fits comfortably with room to spare. The view from my window faces southwest with lots of trees. The kitchen is HUGE with a breakfast bar and I have a balcony as well. There are 2 half-bathrooms, so my roommate and I don't have to wait for each other in the morning. I am in heaven 🙂

You can find out almost anything you want to know, including pictures and availability, here: http://hds.ucsd.edu/onemiramar/

Thank you for your response, violincuty.

Yep, my pleasure! I am a very enthusiastic prospy 😉

One thing you may be wondering is if it's easy to cross the freeways in order to get to campus from Miramar/Mesa. I know that worried me before I moved here. I bought a bike my first day that I park in the bike rack outside of my building, and I bike to lab every morning in less than 10 minutes! It's a beautiful ride- the weather has been incredible every day since I have been here. There are several routes to get to campus, including a bridge over the freeways and a free shuttle. There's also a really fun beach run on Black's beach with fantastic ocean views that is less than a 5-minute drive from campus with free parking. I still have a lot to learn about the school and La Jolla (only been here for 4 days!), but feel free to write if you have any more questions. If I don't know the answer, I will try to find someone who does 😀

How does an unranked waiting list work? Do they pull names out of a hat? Do they throw all the applications down a flight of stairs and take the ones that go the farthest? Do they go in alphabetical order. Please go in alphabetical order. My last name starts with "An" and I'd really appreciate it.

As soon as this waitlist starts moving, I'm just going to call every day until they get sick of me and make a decision. I just can't afford to have no plans in mid-July or something ridiculous like that.

How does an unranked waiting list work?
They look at the current class composition and fill in gaps where necessary (e.g., maybe the male/female ratio is unbalanced, or the instate/outofstate ratio is unbalanced, etc).

Most likely, there's some candidates that are stronger than others and are therefore more likely to gain admission, but calling it an "unranked" list just means that it's not one of those lists where someone ranked #1 is always taken off the list before #2, #2 before #3, etc.

Just hang tight and try to keep yourself occupied in other ways! Good luck!

I am assuming you go down regents and take the road along Scripps Hospital!

Welcome!!

I'm rarely at One Miramar these days...I only sleep and shower there these days...

Violincuty,

Thank you.

My queen-sized bed, dresser, night stand, and desk all fit in my room...I just do not have that much space in my room though. But everything fits.

The one con about One Miramar is there is NO STORAGE SPACE

Hey Violin have you had a chance to hear and see the owls, raccoons, toads, and coyotes?

I've actually found that La Jolla Village Dr. is quicker for me- my lab is at the VA. Sounds like you're prepping for exams...good luck!!

This is very true- my roommate and I were surprised to find no closets in the common areas. However, the bathrooms and living room are spacious. We got around it by purchasing several shelving systems from Target and Ikea...yay innovativeness 🙂

I have not! I hope I do...I love animals. I was thinking about checking out the zoo eventually. Do med students ever organize trips for that sort of thing?

Also, totally random, but I thought I would throw this out there...if you do move here and do not know anyone, there are lots of ways to meet new people. Miramar has a free community breakfast one Friday out of every month. I joined several Meetup.com groups (sushi lovers, hiking, running, salsa dancing, and sailing)- I have met several nice people *outside of science* that I enjoy spending time with. I am even going sailing this Sunday for free 😀 People here seem to be exceptionally friendly and excited to be living in SD!

thanks for all of that info! i'm so glad you're loving it there! my boyfriend has already moved to la jolla from LA, so i've been coming down pretty often. i absolutely love it as well. i may look into some of those groups! sushi lovers, hiking, and sailing sound amazing to me 🙂

What number do you guys recommend calling for updates? Just the admission department or calling Brian directly?

Call Brian directly. He is one of the nicest admissions officers that I have spoken with and is willing to answer your questions.

Alright, so I need another 21-year-old lower middle class white male who loves hockey to drop out of UCSD. Any takers?

I think they should look to see if they have enough LGBT identified people in their class and if not, give me a call!😀

Wow. I have been at one miramar since jan and NEVER knew about that breakfast.

And you should DEFINITELY check out the zoo AND wild animal park. The zoo is by far the best in country! And the wild animal park is not too shabby either.

Sometimes med students do organize group outings! As usual whatever is organized is done so through the use of the forum.

Hey Riceman! Housing questions....Is it possible to live in one of the university owned single room apts? Does UCSD even have these? I looked at the housing websites and it seems that they do exist. Is it just that the waiting list is so long that its impossible to get one?

Do some students live in off-campus housing? If so, which areas/neighborhoods are most popular? I'm sure I asked all this on interview day but can't recall anymore.

Thanks! (any updates from Brian?)

My friend called in and was told that all offers if any have been sent out already and the class is currently full, but they expect more waitlist movement. It seems that everyone calling in gets different information lately.

sigh...i feel like we are waiting for other schools to start their waitlist process so people will start to withdrew one by one as they get in elsewhere. but then again, maybe other schools are also waiting on ucsd for the same reason. it its a huge traffic jam. patience is the only option, turn on some tunes, and wait it out.

wait, has anyone gotten offers off the waitlist yet? or at least no one has posted here huh

I concur...they might be getting ready to send out more rejections though, according to a poster above.

I'm sure there is more happening behind the scenes than we know. Hopefully with the UCSF/UCLA/UCI waitlists moving, people will withdraw waitlist/acceptance spots at UCSD.

Hi all, I just wanted to comment about waitlist and off-campus housing - I got in off the waitlist last year in late June/early July, and the waiting was DEFINITELY excruciating. But worth it in the end! I was 100% UCSD committed, and holding an alternate acceptance. If you're like me, just be careful about housing and such - put off buying parking passes for the other school, and don't get housing until you absolutely have to. And try to keep yourself busy so you don't fret about it so constantly!

I love where I live off campus (off Nobel Dr just east of the freeway). It's a bit more $ than on-campus, but not terrible. I live here because I have a dog and that's not allowed for UCSD housing. I do like the location better than on-campus because it's more convenient to the Trader Joe's/Whole Foods/AMC complexes, and walking distance to school. And there are plenty of med students around in these complexes. It's really a great idea to find someone in your class to live with - much cheaper going the two bedroom route.

Hey what's up!

Getting a single on campus, from what I hear, is extremely difficult b/c the waitlist is extremely long! Everyone wants to live in the ollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllldddd Coast Apts b/c they overlook the ocean (the west facing apts overlook the ocean).

Most students actually live off-campus in the UTC or University City area: few live down in San Diego.

I actually have not seen Brian since I last talked to him. I think he is hiding from me now...LOL...j/k

When I see someone again I will check in with them.

I think I remember Brian telling me it was 50, and he said of those 9 were accepted after July 1st.

Thank you so much for this advice! I am in the same boat, 100% committed to UCSD and on the waitlist. My other acceptance is to Case Western, and they start on July 8th so I don't have much time to hold off on housing. How long do you think I can risk waiting? And if I do look into housing, how do I find roomates when they won't want to live with someone who might bail on them any day. If you think the advice isn't pertinent to everyone feel free to PM me. I've been stressing about it a lot and I'm excited to be able to talk to someone who went through the same thing. Thanks😍

Also, thanks for being our eyes and ears with the admissions office.

Anyone hear anything or have some information? Really quiet.

whenever i see your name posted on a thread in the school specific discussion list, i know it must be ucsd. lol. die-hards!!

i've got nothing new to share.

Yep! Number one choice all the way! It does seem like there is some kind of information blackout this year regarding the acceptable pool.

There's 102 people on the UCSD 2014 facebook group, so it does seem like the class is still overbooked (if you count the people that don't use facebook).

class size is 125 or 120? well hopefully some people will decide to go elsewhere.

I think we're grasping at straws to be looking at the Facebook group. There could be any number of people still on it who have decided to go elsewhere.

Yeah - and the people like me who aren't even on the facebook group for the school they're going to if they don't get off the waitlist.

Thanks for the optimism! I hope you are right. There is still a very long summer to go! Brian told me that they will continue accepting people if/when spots open up until their orientation date, which I believe he said was the beginning of September.

I'm not sure what the class size for 2014 is.

that is pretty late though, I'm sure many of us will have already matriculated elsewhere by then 🙁
