Omzy,

Which day are you interviewing?
Hey UTKD,
I requested an interview on Monday, Oct 26, so I don't have to take 2 days off from work. Jason Edwards replied with a 'thanks for responding to the email' so I'm assuming I got that day. What about you?

EDIT: 1st on page 6, haha!

Tuesday.

Hey Omzy, make sure you PM me and tell me how it goes!

Good Luck!

Is anybody else down to a productivity level of zero?

It's a good thing I have absolutely nothing to do this week. (Well, maybe a good thing. I might be less concerned about KUMC if I had another source of stress.)

I go back and forth on what I think my odds are. I was feeling pretty good about my chances up until my 1st interviewer brought up a weakness in my application, and now I can't stop thinking about it. No good.

Yeah, I'm not very prodcutive, either. I try to throw myself into work so I quit thinking about it, but I'm not sure it's "helping".

My interviewer also brought up a weakness. What do you say? I was like "Yeah, I know but look at this stuff instead!!!"

*refresh*

Haha, I just imagine whoever updates the website logging in to see a screen that tells him: "Page views today: 4,471,498. Unique visitors: 40." Perhaps he then turns around slowly and says "... Guys? Um. We should hurry. I'm scared."

Productivity level = zero here too.

*Refreshes email again.

I am still trying to keep in the mindset that it will turn out well. My first interviewer ended the interview by commenting that "You have nothing to worry about."

So naturally my response has been to worry incessantly.

Haha. That would be awesome to see.

Good Luck! Only 6 more days until your F5 will actually return an answer!

They waited until the last possible second for the EDP invites. And...they were very selective this year as you've said...

Just check it once a day at 6 PM and then go crazy on the 30th.

I see the wisdom in that.
Unfortunately, I'm the sort of person who checks my e-mail compulsively even when the most urgent thing in my inbox is likely to be a coupon for 20% off at Borders. (At least I draw the line at checking my e-mail in class. Gotta have your boundaries.. )

Which reminds me of this:
The Only Emails I Could Receive Which Would Justify The Frequency With Which I Check My Email.

I actually left class (a lab class) during some downtime today to go upstairs to the lab (that I work in) to check my email....

It's gonna be today, I can feel it 🙂

So far, the've done EVERYTHING on a Friday, and this is the last Friday before they HAVE to tell us. They'll hit the "load" button around 4:25 PM. I just know it!

(This is me being hopeful, lol)

Yes. I am going to be hopeful too.

Today sometime between 4:30 and 5:30pm. 😀

*Refreshes MEDS page.

I figure there are 3 ways this could turn out today.

1. Nothing happens today and I go home and drink a beer.
2. I get rejected today and I go home and drink a beer.
3. I get accepted today and I go home and drink a beer.

Whatever happens, I have something to look forward to. 🙂

, that really sums up the entire process.

Semi-bad news:

Just heard from a reliable source that the committee is way behind on meetings. Sounded like no news is coming today...

Obviously this is hearsay. So take it with a grain of salt.

That's it. I'm driving to Mexico.
See you in 5 days.

OH looks right I'm right and you're WRONG. me 1, you 0. by the end of our KU Med career, I am going to have sooo many wins against you it's going to be ridiculous.

I told all of you a week ago to not waste your time checking until a few days before Oct 1st. We are dealing with KU Med here. the sooner you realize that, the better off you will be. Also, keep this in mind when we do get our decisions back, there will be some WTF reactions. WTF as in KU Med is unpredictable and might just reject most of us. You have not seen the amount of applicant lives KU Med has ruined. Apply first time, wait forever, finally rejected. Then, reapply after the dean suggests you have great chances and rejection again. Just waited 2 years of your life. Awesome. I've seen it happen to many ppl. I pray I am not one! Moral of the story: do not expect or believe anything from KU Med until you have gotten an official acceptance via email, mail, whatever.

😕

Right. It was stupid and naive of us to get excited or put any stock in something that came directly from the mouth of the dean of admissions.

Yup, it WAS really stupid of me to be giddy and excited and hopeful that I get into medical school. How crazy of me to rally with some friends?!?! Silly, silly girl.

Jayhawk1, I didn't realize we were competing, but we can start if you'd like.

Silly girl. 😉 I was actually referring to marele, not you hehe. Her and I were joking about it earlier. Sorry for the mix-up.

Also, I'm not trying to be competitive or anything. I am trying to help everyone. If I told you the specifics of some of my friends' stories, my own story, etc., then you would understand where I am coming from. I don't want to divulge too much personal info until after we hear back! I just think if you prepare yourselves for a rejection, then you won't be too sad if you don't get the answer you want. I'm trying to protect you. 🙂 Most of you have like 1-2 months experience on waiting for KU, while there have been many before you who have waited 2 years and still don't get a KU acceptance so they give up or settle for a school they dislike. And, these are ppl who have the same GPAs, MCATs, etc. as us. Basically, most ppl applying to KU have similar #s so it gets really subjective and ppl get left out. 🙁

I will tell you one story my friend told me last year. Her friend applied to KU Med the first time, got waitlisted but didn't get off it. He talked to the admissions office, asked how to improve his app, and they told him to regain his KS residency (bc he lost it when his parents moved out-of-state), and to reapply. So, the main reason he was told he didn't get directly in was because he lost his KS residency. So, he regained his KS residency, reapplied, and then this time he was instantly rejected after the interview. What!? Last time, he at least got waitlisted, what's the deal? He called the admissions office again and they simple told him "we didn't think you'd make a good doctor." Well, awesome, maybe they should have told him that the FIRST time so he didn't have to waste a year reapplying. By the way, this is a credible source. My friend, who told me about her friend, is a 1st year at KU Med right now.

So, there is one story for you. I know much worse ones actually but don't want to divulge too much personal info here. Imagine personally knowing tons of ppl who went through similar experiences with KU and then understand where I am coming from. So, my point is to not get too excited about a KU acceptance. If you get one, and I don't think the odds could really be any better for us EDPers, then be thrilled, happy, party, drink those beers and go to Mexico marele 😉 but also be so honored that you were given a chance. There have been many many equally qualified KS residents like you who were not given a chance.

ahh I am so excited! we are all going to get in!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but honestly, for most ppl, the attitude I gave off in earlier posts is more accurate. we were smart to do EDP and even more fortunate to get interviews. us EDP interviewees have great chances to get iN!!!! can't wait!!!! think about it...once we get accepted and we will within a week, then we know we're going to become doctors. it won't just be a dream anymore!!!!!!!!!

This is a draining process for everybody. It really is a mental game. The more we prepare for the worst, think of alternate paths and set up for next year's application process, the better we will feel about ourselves whether or not we are accepted this year. If you're truly devoted to the field of medicine, you won't let rejection stand in your way.

I finished my secondary, and it says that all parts of the application are complete when I log into it (letters, secondary submitted and verified, amcas verified), but I haven't received an e-mail or anything saying that my app is complete!!! Is this normal or did I do something wrong???

Anyone think of other schools to which they will open up their application? In a few days we will either be paying AMCAS more money and more secondaries will require some beaucoup $$, or we will only have $50 to send into KU. I hope the latter for all of us! I really don't want to move. . .

When do you find out EDP from Kansas?

For EDP, no notification was sent via email for completed applications. Your best bet would be to just check MEDS every so often for updates. They will most likely send you an email after they review your application.

I feel bad saying this, but I haven't really thought that far ahead. I own a house here and my husband has a job here. Moving really isn't in the cards for us.... I don't know what I'll do.

But for now, I'm only going to worry about failure if it happens. I'm only visualizing success.

I hate to say this to you, but this is the risk of applying EDP. if you get in, awesome! if not, you're screwed for the entire year. by the time you apply elsewhere, you won't even be COMPLETE until the end of October. you will be fighting for interview slots with ppl who were complete back in July. in other words, if you don't get in EDP, your application year is over and you should prepare to reapply next year. you can send out more apps, that's up to you. I'm just telling you that you won't hear back from any schools and will a waste a lot of money doing so unless you have like super high #s (3.8, 35 MCAT, etc.).

Anyways, if things don't workout for you EDP, then apply to DO schools still. There's a DO school in KC, so you can go to med school in the area. If we can get an EDP interview invites for KU Med, we can definitely get into DO schools. They are much easier to get into. If you aren't okay with DO schools, then try your luck with a few MD apps but, like I said, you'll just be so late in the game. If you really want MD and EDP for KU doesn't work out, you'll most likely have to reapply.

Or move to the regular decision pool at KUMC and still have a decent shot....

I know a few people the last couple years who got in that way. (And they did not have 3.8+ GPA's or 35+ MCATs.)

Abi,

It took 23 days to get from "secondary received" to "file complete".

You have nice numbers, but I must ask: Why on earth did you apply so late?

You'll be complete in October, so I suppose it could be much worse. I just hope the delay in file completion doesn't affect the competitive value of your gpa and mcat score. Maybe get an invite for november or december interview. You'll definitely be in there with a lot of the out of staters.

Good luck!

EDIT: lol, I re-read this and thought "wow" -why do i sound like such a jerk. Haha, no...I actually think you still have a really good shot if your ECs are even average. Good luck! Again!

I agree with RagingMoose...

While being rejected from EDP certainly doesn't help your chances, it is NOT a death sentence.

Rejection from EDP simply tells you that you weren't the candidate they had in mind to accept you very early in the application cycle and give you a secured spot in the class. All that it means is that they would like to weigh you against more applicants in the regular decision pool and make a decision later.

However, it is hard to know whether you sucked and will be rejected or are just being evaluated against others. BUT I would suspect that since you studs and studettes made it to the interview and had good interviews, and don't make it...they just want to see some more ppl and see how you stack up.

that's because for RD with KU, if you're a KS resident then you get an automatic interview with a 26 MCAT and 3.4 GPA. that's why some of you who didn't get an EDP interview received instant interviews for October RD. that is the first round of RD interviews, your app would have been completed before other RDers, and therefore you get the first automatic interviews.

other schools do not give you automatic interviews for having such lower #s (26 MCAT and 3.4). KU only does that for KS residents because it's a public school and caters to its residents. no other MD school will make it that easy to get an interview.

oh and ALSO, I forgot to mention this...KU is not true rolling admissions. it is only pseudo-rolling admissions. yes, if you apply earlier then you will receive an earlier interview, but you can send in your app in like November and still get an automatic, guaranteed interview for having a 3.4 and 26. your interview will simply be later in the year, like January.

this is true, and they also do this in RD. it's really annoying. you feel like you're being thrown around. after your RD interview, you do not necessarily receive an acceptance, rejection, or waitlist. very FEW RD interviewees receive immediate acceptances. most ppl are put "on hold" until March so that they stack you up against everyone in the later interviews. this is why it is not true rolling admissions. the bottom like 30% of RD interviewees get rejected.

the #s are something like...each round of RD interviews there are about 60 interviewees. ~10 are accepted, ~30 are put on hold til March, and ~20 are rejected. it's lame. if you are put on hold, which most ppl are, then you should expect to be waitlisted in March or straight rejected. some ppl put on hold are directly accepted in March, but I do not think it is too many.

because the thing is, there are 175 slots for the class. last year, they took 43 EDPers, 25 from special programs (SMP, rural program, deferred ppl), so that left ~100 slots left for all RDers. so, almost like half of the slots are filled up before RD even estarts. there are 6 RD interview sessiosn, ~10 are taken from each one, so that leaves ~40 spots left over for March. ~180 ppl are put on hold, so you have like a 25% chance of getting in March if you are put on hold. then like the next ~60 are waitlisted, the rest are rejected. the waitlist barely moves, so unless you're in the top 10, consider it a rejection. this last year they took 8 off the waitlist.

so, there ya go, there's some info about KU admissions. if I'm accepted in the next few days for EDP, I'll share with everyone the things you need to BS in your interview. KU looks for certain answers, they won't tell you if they don't like your answer, but on their notes they will write them down and then report them to the committee. one obvious answer when they ask you "where do see yourself in 10-15 years?" needs to include something about practicing in Kansas.

Not quite true. There were 115 EDP apps, 60 interviewed and 20 were given interviews for October.

The other 35 will be considered at a later date in the RD process. I would absolutely be astounded if all those 35 ppl had below a 3.4 gpa and a 26 mcat. I would conclude that there was some minor factor in all 20 of us that kept us from EDP but they wanted to immediately give us invite for october. So for the EDP post-interview rejects, it's more likely that the same reasoning will apply... Either you blew it or there's a minor factor that prohibits you from an edp acceptance but doesn't bar you from matriculation per se.

Hey Laryngo,

I would like to send some positive JuJu your way.

I am pulling for you so you don't have to wait another year.

ALSO, jaydoc if you're out there...I'm rooting for you buddy.

I can't imagine a more brutal summer than being the number 9 that never gets called into action.

Good luck!

On a lighter note...how pissed were you when the movie "9" came out on 9/9/09 ? Brutal buddy...

I didn't realize until now that my application was even considered "late". My advisor has been telling me as long as I submit my AMCAS in august, do my secondarys ASAP after that, I'd be fine. but now I wish I had it all done by the end of July. I retook the MCAT June 18th, so I didn't have my scores until July 20th... then I just took a long time trying to make my AMCAS perfect. I really wish I had had some better guidance along the way during this whole process. I found this forum relatively late... I'm hoping my late app doesn't screw me over :/

I think that you'll be fine. You'll be interviewing a little bit later. You're in luck because KU does have a conservative rolling admissions so if you do really well then they'll just accept you or you'll be held until march where your 4.0/31 will probably hold up nicely.

I guess I wouldn't go so far as to say it's "late." However, you're probably going to be complete early to mid october, possibly reviewed in late october and at the earliest, if you're lucky, interviewed in november. (Probably December). So don't worry too much. You're competitive, you'll get an interview, and barring bad ECs/crappy interview you'll have a good a' shot as any of us.

🙂

. Not to laugh at the circumstance, but that's a legitimate question. I sympathize with Jaydoc's circumstance as well and really hope he gets a leg up this time.
