For my date there were two groups: morning and afternoon. The morning group had their interviews first and then met up with my group for a common lunch/info session. I was in the afternoon group, so I arrived at 10:45 for an 11:00 AM starting time. We had a luncheon and information session with the dean/staff/two 2nd year students about the school/curriculum/student life. Afterwards, we went on a tour of the facilities and hospital. Then in the mid-afternoon I had two one-on-one open file interviews (although the timing for everyone was different). The interviews were very relaxed, which was a relief. I was done by 4:00.

Overall, the groups are very small. For my date, there were only 12 people total interviewing (morning + afternoon combined) so there was a pretty nice feel to it. I loved the school because the staff, students, and faculty were all so positive and friendly. That and patient-based curriculum (that is being overhauled) and truly amazing new facilities.
I wish you the best of luck, you'll definitely enjoy the ride.

Also:

It looks like UMMS is interviewing only on Tuesdays? Is anyone getting excited about 10/15? I know UMass doesn't release a lot of decisions early, but fingers crossed anyways! :xf:

i wrote to brenda in admissions to ask her this. she said: "A typical interview afternoon end around 3:30 p.m. If one of your interviews is off campus, or if one of your interviewers has a medical emergency, your day may extend out to 4:30 p.m. I hope this helps with your planning."

Interview invite!!! I am so excited and grateful. 😀

They do, they can only accept ~100 (someone correct me if I am wrong) and no more due to state funding so they only accept a small number early on and fill the rest of their class taking their time the rest of the year

This was based on past UMass threads I have read

yup, that's pretty much what they told us on interview day

I think it's up to about 125 now. And the rule is that they can only have 125 people holding a place in the class at once, I believe. So I think the waiting comes into play once 125 acceptances are out and they have to wait for people to decline/give up their spots before they can take anyone else. They can't "overaccept" as other schools can. Obviously they end up accepting more than 125 overall, maybe as much as double that number. But from our perspective, it's a slow, drawn-out trickle of acceptances that ends up coming out of there.

I am a reapplicant to UMASS and I agree with AyCaramba. Last year, there were a few acceptances handed out 3-6 weeks post interview, but the vast majority of interviewed applicants didn't hear a peep until May. Actually, I don't think that UMASS rejected anybody post interview until May (I received my rejection on May 13 and interviewed in early October).

All that being said, UMASS really impressed me when I interviewed there last year and its really cheap. So, while it might take a long time to hear back from them, its worth the wait.

hey everyone - new to the SDN forums.

SO excited - interview on Oct 20th!!! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!🙂

WOW, I just received an interview for 12-15-2009, did anyone else receive a date as far off as December? Better late than never I guess.

Well I guess I'm alone on this one :xf:

I remember on last years threads that there was a large jump in interview dates, and that people were surprised that they received invites as far off as December.

Also, UMMS did hand out a few (well, one actually) acceptances on the first friday after October 15th for the last cycle. Here's to hoping for some good news and sparing all of us a long waiting process! 🙂

Anyone else frantically checking the "accept admissions" status on the UMASS site, every hour, on the hour? I know they probably won't update until tomorrow, but I just can't help myself! :xf:

I am willing to bet if Umass offers you an acceptance they will email you first.

@caveat: I believe that most people who were accepted last year found out via status page first. Someone might wanna double check that though. Good luck to everyone awaiting decisions today!

What;s the earliest people have heard back from Umass? I feel like stuff have been goin out on fridays for the most part. I interviewed last Wed, any chance I would be up for review so soon?

Is anyone else meeting with the minority recruitment office before the interviews? I have been scheduled to meet with 2 people in the morning responsible for recruiting students from URM/ disadvantaged back grounds, before my other 2 interviews. The only thing I find strange is it's all the way in december. I hope it's not an interview for a post bac program, I really want to go to UMASS medical. Anyone any ideas what this means for me, thank god I at least have 3 other interviews so far to keep me busy till December.

wouldn't you know if it were an interview for a post bac program?? 😕

anyway, i wouldn't worry about it being in december, or about them having given you the opportunity to meet with more people. if anything, i'd take it as a good sign! and umass is a bit slow during this process, so a december interview is great 🙂

No, I didn't apply for the post-bac, but I heard sometimes they will imply it while in the interview.

so, i checked my status page a little while ago, and i got in! still waiting for the email. but breathing a giant sigh of relief 🙂

I just checked my status as well! I'm admitted! SOOO excited!

Congrats dw2158!

Where on the status page did you check? Did you click the accept/decline admissions button?

No status change here...guess I'm going to be waiting forever 🙁

I got an acceptance as well!! SO EXCITED!!!

I didn't check my status, but the email came around 1:30 pm.

You guys all seem like really awesome applicants, just wondering how high up you would rank UMass? For example if you got into top 20 school with a 10k scholarship, would you take that over UMass?

well, i LOVED umass when i was there. so i'm not going to cross it off the list until the very end when i see all the financial aid offers! for a 10k scholarship... meh, probs would choose umass. but i don't know. i'll have to finish interviewing and get back to you. 😛

but seriously, i loved umass for reasons beyond the money, so i'd be considering it even if it were more expensive than it is.

I concur with everything dw2158 said. UMass is an amazing school regardless of the money.

On another note, does anyone know if the class of 2013 had a white coat ceremony?

They haven't had it yet. I remember at the interview they mentioned that they don't get the coat until the end of first (or maybe second?) year because as my tour guide said to me "they don't really know anything yet".

Has anyone heard anything regarding acceptances since last Friday? Any idea if more will be coming out today?? I know this school is slow, but I'm just anxious...

So it is lame to want a white coat ceremony as an incoming freshman? I swear I'm not that pretentious!

Me too. I hope they don't wait till March to let us know.

Based on last year's thread, it looks like next time we might hear from the Committee is 11/20 - a Friday. :xf:

I don't know if I can wait that long... wish they were quicker!

Does anyone know what percentage of applicants get interviews here? Or at least how many applicants UMASS gets? I was complete mid-September and haven't heard anything (yes, I know that was late-ish, but it was as early as I could be done). Just curious what my chances of hearing from them still are.

I know, AyCaramba. Hang in there.

From what I could gather from last year's thread, if one doesn't hear approximately a month after their interview, the wait is much longer - like February through May for a Waitlist. Who knows, though. . . .

I believe they get about a 1,000 and interview approximately 500 - maybe a little more. They move slowly there - even they admitted it in the orientation for the interview day. I think a lot will depend on your specific application. I know that doesn't really help. . . . .

On my interview day they said that exact same thing... but the actual number they can accept was 120, as they told me.

I think on my interview day they said last year they got between 850 and 900 apps last year. I'm not sure how many get interviews, though.

I think they get about 1000 applicants each year (may go up this year b/c of the economy?) and interview about 500.

Hi everyone, I am scheduled for an interview at UMASS next week. Any more suggestions for the interview?
Thanks everyone.

Hi quick question when did you receive the interview date? I received mine in Oct 14th for an interview all the way in December 15. Just don't like the fact I have to wait so so long. Good thing I had one interview at Howard University, so by Dec 15 I all ready have experience in interviewing. I recommend you have a mock interview that was a HUGE HELP set up by my undergraduate college. Good luck.

I agree with JClass. I had a mock interview the day before my actual interview at UMASS. He really laid into me and asked difficult questions. My interviews at UMASS were a breeze in comparison! Good Luck!
