Interesting - this was helpful.
Do you know exactly where the shuttles are going from? One is up rt. 9 right?
I feel like I have no freakin clue what is gonig on!

Don't worry. I had no idea what was going on either, which is why I decided to stop by the school. Yes, one shuttle lot is up rt. 9 behind Building 19. The other lot is on Lincoln Road which is off of Plantation, North of UMASS. I'm not sure if UMASS even knows what they're doing. Parking services informed me of the two lots, whereas the admissions office was only aware of the lot on Rt. 9. Did you already find a place to live or are you picking a place based on the shuttle lots?

Also, don't forget about registration which starts in July.

That is really helpful! Thanks for stopping into the office. Did you check around those areas for apts? Are those decent areas of Worc? This whole parking thing sounds like a giant pain, especially in the winter! Oh well, it's great that you posted that though, I wouldn't have known!

I looked at the surrounding area and found a few nice apartments, although not all within walking distance and some very expensive. With this parking issue, I really want to find a place within walking distance so that I can avoid it all together. The area around UMASS actually isn't that bad...compared to other parts of Worcester. If you don't mind driving, there are many places nearby that are fairly priced and well maintained. Good luck on your apartment searching!

I passed along the parking related questions to the School of Medicine and got this in reply, to share with you:

"Students are automatically being assigned to the Rte 9 lot by Bldg 19, which is the closest lot to the school. There are a number of other parking lots available and if students would prefer a different lot because of where they live, they can request it. Both lots are in reasonable areas of Worcester and the shuttle operators have been very helpful. Students can move their cars to an on-campus lot after 5PM if they know they are going to be here late (eg studying or involved in some activity)."

The campus is undergoing major construction as some of you may know. We lost one of our parking lots which will be home to a new academic center. The parking crunch affects all of us in the UMassMed community. The lots you will be using are used by employees as well.

The shuttle service is very very good. They have continuous runs during peak periods. In rain and wintery weather you will not wait long for a shuttle! And as noted above, if you are staying on campus late, you can decide to grab your car and move it to a campus lot after 5pm.

Congratulations to you all and I look forward to seeing new faces on campus.

Thanks for that! sorry for the super slow reply. Yeah, I wanted to know so that I could consider living further from the school if there was a lot near by. Options by the school do seem limited and much more expensive than I thouhgt. I hate having to drive from Boston each time I want to look at places...I'm a bit stressed about this. 🙁

saturn, thanks for posting information on that! the shuttle lot thing was COMPLETELY unknown to me and plays a significant role on where i will want to live

holy, i feel you on that. we're going to buy a house, and struck out the first time (saw 5 houses, all were a bust). we're looking at more houses this weekend. and driving from vermont (a little over 1.5hrs). i pray this will be our last visit. if we find one we like this time and put in an offer that gets accepted, i will still have to stay somewhere temporarily but it's better. we're also keeping in mind the location of the lot now. hopefully it won't be too difficult 🙂 have you been keeping up with the list serv emails about rentals?

Glad that you found out in time - it is an important consideration!! The remote parking/shuttle arrangement will add 15 to 25 minutes to the commute. It's slim pickings and expensive, but worth looking for somewhere to live that's within walking distance of school.

Trust me, you won't want to have to deal with parking remotely, waiting for a shuttle (especially in worcester weather), and riding a shuttle to class. Huge hassle to go through every day at 7am.

Hey, I just had a quick question-- I'm still getting all of my forms in, but I was wondering at what point you set up your UMass email account? I haven't read anything about this yet. Thanks!

Sadly, no. I'm on three waitlists but none of them seem to be moving very much this late in the game.

Don't give up hope!

If you're on any private med school waitlists, they tend to move more late in the game.

Kind of a random question, but is it a macbook pro or a macbook that we're getting?

wow. can't believe people are still posting in this thread this late in the cycle.

The Umass Med thread for 2010-2011 is completely quiet right now. I thought that once the 2ndary was released, there would be more activity but boy was I wrong.

Not so random if you consider that we are dropping 2 grand on it, as I'm sure your wallet is well-aware. Yay for student loan debt!

Anyway, I was curious about this myself so I did some research. We are indeed getting a "MacBook" but it is the new version. What does that mean you ask? It is the size of the older Mac Books (ie white or black plastic) but comes in the aluminum body that was previously associated with the MacBook Pro line. So, we are getting a "top of the line" Mac Book that looks like a MacBook Pro, but is the relative size of the MacBook model.

Confused yet? Check out the link...

Hey do any of you who applied last year know of anyone being denied residency and rejected after filling out the secondary?

No, but then again the residency reqs are pretty strict, call them if you're not sure you qualify.
