How did you know they were Michigan residents? explicitly stated or from current location?

In addition to each person's picture, they also list each person's hometown, state, graduation year and school attended. I just searched for ", MI" and got 89 results.

Also, since Michigan may be reading these posts...I hope they don't mind that I'm sharing this info!

Btw, "hometown" isn't necessarily correct on the accepted student picture book. It has me listed as the place I currently live for grad school - not my real hometown.
So there may really be more than 89 MI residents with offers..

Yeah, fair enough. Should be a decent approximation, though

I was part of this group, got accepted and looking to see if anyone around here is also. If so, are you going?

I'm most likely going. The only thing that could pull me away from Umich is Harvard, possibly Hopkins, or a scholarship somewhere else. Since about 25% of the people who interview get in there, I'll most likely be coming to U mich. I definitely like Umich's better than any school I have seen so far (I love flextime quizzes!)

Very strongly considering going here... absolutely loved the school on my interview day, I'm just a bit wary of the OOS tuition. If I get some decent aid I'll be in Ann Arbor next year for sure.

Speaking of financial aid, did we need to fill out anything other than FAFSA and Michigan's online aid form? Any tax forms we need to send in the mail? Thanks!

Hmmm...so what time tomorrow will deferrals finally know? Maybe the Twitter feed will inform us.

bWell, here are the details:

"Defer Decisions: 50 candidates (30 MI/20NR) under consideration for 15 offers. Still deliberating but at least 10 offers for MI residents."

Not too encouraging for this OOSer, < 25% shot.

Any February decisions hear back yet? Or are they waiting until 5PM tomorrow to send all decisions?

I got accepted off the deferred list last night. 😳 I'm oos.

18 non-residents on the upper tier waitlist means they only accepted 2 non-resident deferrals from the twenty that were present. Deferral as a non-resident is a pretty ridiculous situation to be in, as they accept so few of us (at least this year). I hope for future applicants' sanity UM considers doing a more thorough review of interviewees to accept/waitlist more immediately after the interview, and perhaps considering/comparing deferrals throughout the season instead of only at 2 specific times (I know other schools do this). They seem to over-use this option and instill a lot of false hope for out of state folks.

sorry if you got waitlisted but UM runs arguably the best admissions processes. other schools (and by that i mean pretty much everyone) leaves you high and dry for so long, even rolling ones. mich gives the fastest responses. yes some get deferred, but thats part of the process.

I'm with JJFoshay on this (I'm one of those 18). I agree that Michigan runs arguably the best admissions process, but this is something they need to change. If I knew on October 15th that I was waitlisted, it would give me a lot more closure than being deferred twice, giving me two additional times of eager anticipation followed by letdown.

UM has the fastest responses and is the most open about everything, which is great, but this doesn't need to be part of the process.

How many OOSers did they accept in total from the deferred list? Something like 4 out of 30? I say just get rid of the deferral process altogether, or at least defer only the people that have a decent shot at getting in (or at least better than ~13%). With as many qualified applicants as they get, how much better does it make their class when they include this deferral process if they're going to take so few from the OOS deferral pool?

I think the reason they defer people is because it's really hard for them to predict how strong the interviewee pool is going to be for the later interview days. So when they make the cut-offs for accepted vs waitlist in whatever system they have to rank applicants, they've got this big group of students that are right at that cutoff, but they have no way of knowing whether the interviewees they have yet to see are going to be stronger than them or weaker than them.

And so while I understand your frustration that only a handful of the deferred applicants were taken off the deferred list, I imagine that in years past, more of these deferred applicants were chosen (otherwise, you're right -- they probably would just waitlist them to begin with).

Other schools have adopted the system where they just waitlist a bunch of people and then review them each time and sometimes pull people off the waitlist before May (Vanderbilt does this), but people complain about that too.

*shrug* I agree that Michigan probably doesn't have a perfect system, but I don't know what the perfect system would be, either.

at least you even get a shot. most oos public schools are like 80/20 90/10 or 100% IS. i was pretty much clean swept by all OOS public schools. no interview nada

If they were really transparent they would have just dropped the phrasing "Highly Desirable" or maybe called it instead "Highly Desirable (Only If You're a Michigan Resident)" from day one.

you have to realize that at the time they put you as highly desirable, they probably didnt know what the IS/OOS numbers are going to look like. they keep playing with that and try and get it to the right ratio by the end of all admissions. its tough for them to know early on what percent IS and OOS they will accept of the deferred list until they reach the end of the process.

running a very fast rolling admissions process and trying to achieve a 50:50 IS:OOS ratio cannot be easy. in the past, they may have taken more OOS off the deferred list than this year. its so tough to predict

Agree with JasonE/bobsmith -- I'm an OOS deferral (since October 15) and now upper tier waitlist candidate. Michigan has the best admissions 'customer service' of any school that I have encountered. We can't get angry with them just because they are on the fence about letting us in! We were some of the first to be interviewed -- of course they have to compare us to future interviewees. Unfortunately for us, everyone that Michigan interviews is well qualified.
Don't get me wrong, I am really bummed. Michigan is my #1 choice for so many reasons...but I am happy that I am still in a competitive position.

Wow us OOS deferred people sure have lots of representation on SDN, it's like 5 out of 18 so far. Although I also feel a little led on by the two Highly Desirable decisions in December and February, the small number of acceptances from the OOS deferred pool may mean larger eventual movements on the waitlist. It's not over until August 1, and at least now we know what to expect in terms of waitlist movement and where we stand. I am rooting for all of us to eventually get accepted! :luck:

Good luck to those who are holding out for UMich! Hope to see you this fall. :xf:

you can add me to the deferred OOS list (since oct for me), which makes me #6 of the 18 i suppose. i've never posted before, but i've felt so compelled to post because of what a huge let down it has been. reading these last few posts, esp yours greg87, pretty much demonstrates exactly how i feel. since i applied, i KNEW i wanted michigan, and i made it very clear i would come. I feel like it has been a 4 month roller coaster of anticipation followed by major let down, with this last deferral being the hardest to take. i really thought that "highly desirable" meant just that, but after reading these twitter posts/SDN reports about the ridiculous deferred OOS stats, I really feel pathetic. having the stats seems nice but really they make me feel like a neurotic, second-guessing, skeptical, pessimistic, twitter addicted freak. vancouvergeorge is dead on-- it's an illusion of transparency. plus, it's totally unnecessary to know the exact minute of our waitlist notification-- did it really affect anyone's day by knowing that this would happen between 4:30 and 4:45??

as a flavor of my pessimism, womp, do we really know what to expect? Not a single person was accepted from the waitlist one year. this is bad news. nosimplehighway-- 49 other people besides you also think they are "competitive". this many students hasn't come off the waitlist in over 6 years!

lucky number seven here of the fallen 18 OOS souls.... i share many of the same sentiments with the rest of you guys. Who knows perhaps more of the other 11 will emerge from the depths of the land of lurkers....

Don't be hating. Looks like I'm one of the few IS deferrals to have been high waitlisted. Whatta bummer.

Oh I agree with you, I'm just trying to keep my hopes up as I really loved Michigan. To add to your pessimism, the larger pre-2004 waitlist movement numbers (45, 61) are probably irrelevant for us now as the Michigan director of admissions changed from Katie Horne to Robert Ruiz sometime around 2004-2005. I'd imagine different policies, regressions and class filling algorithms are in place now. If you look at some of the threads before 2004, Michigan was known to accept a large portion of its class from the waitlist (in fact the upper tier waitlists were eventually almost all accepted).

sorry man. what made you want michigan from the start as an OOS?

just have been very familiar with the school for many reasons, academically and personally. unfortunately, this familiarity was not with the medical admissions office.

hiii just chiming in to say I am #8/18 OOS deferral-->high waitlist. If it makes you guys feel better, I don't want to go here.

From the land of lurkers, 10/18. I feel really lucky that it wasn't my top choice, and that I do have an acceptance to one of my top choices, otherwise I'd be pretttyyyyy bitter about being deferred twice.

jeez it's crazy to see how many of these people are on sdn.

After interviewing at some schools, I now feel like Umich has the most beastly curriculum. The weekly quizzes will make sure you don't procrastinate and they are flexible!! I like this place a lot. I wonder if they'll go private in the next couple years because the state isn't coughing up that much money.

I doubt it, they can just keep their state school status and make it effectively private by giving scholarships to OOS students to offset the difference. Seems to be close to this already if I understand it correctly.

if you consider March 25th soon, sure!

oh boo, I thought it was 3/15 for some reason... anyone know if they tend to offer scholarships to most acceptees or to just the really top-notch candidates?

Revisit invitations will be sent via email tomorrow morning.

Stein - Yes, I think it's early April. I called some weeks ago to find out.

11/18 OOS deferral to waitlist here.

Starting to think they waitlisted us because we're SDNers!?

so... who's going to second look?

I got the email 5 minutes ago but it was dated 2 days ago? strange.

And I still haven't gotten the email--strange! What are the dates? I thought I saw in a calendar they sent a few months ago that it was going to be in early May?

Yeah, May 6-7 is the "diversity symposium" and May 7-9 is second look weekend
