I interviewed at USF recently and was tremendously impressed. I loved the school and facilities and all, but the attitude everyone had there stood out to me the most. It was so laid back and relaxed; my interviews were the favorite ones I've had through the whole process. After interview day there, USF moved up to right at the top of the list of consideration, so hopefully I'm accepted and end up in Tampa in the fall. Good luck to everyone!

Hey all. I just got the invite for an interview on Feb. 23rd. I was complete on Dec. 1st, just for reference.

It doesn't seem like anyone else has that day, but either way I'll also probably be at that dinner that night before. I live about an hour away so it won't be too bad going back and forth.

So, what are the chances an applicant gets an interview after being complete in September/October and not hearing back anything by now?

👎 Seriously, USF.... if you want to reject me, please get it over with!

Congrats to all those interviewing, and good luck to those waiting to hear...:xf:

Thanks! I'll be kissing 100 G's goodbye (at least). Sigh.

Although, this is pretty cheap in terms of medical school tuition dollars!

I've been complete since mid October and I haven't heard a thing. Probably not a good sign, but I was thinking of sending an update letter. Does anybody know the preferred email address?

If you read the email USF sent you stating you were complete, it says not to send any updates and not to contact them for anything, they will contact you.

I think it doesn't hurt if we contact them.

Anyone know the tuition here?

https://services.aamc.org/tsfreports/

Tuition went up 19.5% over last year. 🙁 I was really upset when I got the final bill for this year last July of $26,833. It was $1,300 OVER the estimate then ($25,500). Fin aid lady I emailed last semester couldn't give me an estimate for the other three years I will be here, but said around 10% increase a year. I guess the State of Florida's Dept of Education is subsidizing us less and less...

Wow, you've got a 34 and a 3.86. I can't believe you haven't even gotten an interview at USF. You've been SCREWED.

I sent in a letter of update and they emailed me with a mean response saying that I should read the website, and only applicants who have been interviewed are eligible to submit updates :/

The "File Ready for Review" email USF sent me, word for word:

"Dear Applicant,

We have received your verified AMCAS application and the related secondary application documents needed to move your application onto the review process (Secondary Application, Letters and Fee Payment). These materials will be reviewed in the near future to determine your competitiveness for an interview. If any materials are still pending (i.e. residency form or photo), you will be notified to submit these items upon interview.

Our interview season begins in mid September and normally goes through mid May. If you are eligible for an interview, you may be invited during any given week until we cease interviewing. If selected, you will be contacted by email to arrange your visit. You will normally be contacted about one to two weeks prior to the first interview date that we will offer to you. We interview only on Tuesdays.

Please do NOT contact us for status updates and do NOT send application updates (including transcripts) unless specifically requested. For more information and a timeline visit the following link: http://hsc.usf.edu/medicine/mdadmissions/appl_acceptance_procedures.htm

Sincerely,
Office of MD Admissions
USF College of Medicine"

And just FYI: I didn't capitalize the "NOT" for emphasis, USF did. I only bolded the statement.

USF doesn't go based just on stats (maybe WashU would be a better choice? 😉 ). They look at ECs and your background (i.e. non-trads have an advantage in some cases) from what I gather with a lot of weight as well. Not sure what that user's application looks like, but I'm sure you'll get an invite sometime. Patience! 🙂

Does anyone know how many interview invites USF gives out? and how many are accepted?

Maybe a few, I don't believe any, go just by stats. But if you're as far above a schools averages as he is over USF's, you should probably get an interview. Unless of course the rest of your application just sucks. In which case i retract my statement about him being screwed over.

I'm surprised you got a mean response back, but at the same time, it clearly says multiple times to not submit updates and they will contact you if they need anything.

Playing the devil's advocate here, it's simply the way they do things down at USF and I can see why. Not everyone sends updates to schools and I feel that just because someone sends an update doesn't mean they're more interested/better than someone who does not submit an update. This is probably why at most schools, updates/LOIs hold little weight. You know there are students out there (specifically on here) that send signed letters of intent even pre-interview to nearly every school for which they applied (it ruins the credibility for the honest among us). When it comes down to it, this shouldn't be a lobbying/politicking process when you have 3+ years of credentials that can directly compare to other applicants. I assume USF believes they have enough information to determine whether you're what they're looking for.
That said, if you've had a specific enlightening experience that overwhelmingly cemented what you see as your calling in medicine and life, maybe call them and try telling them that? Good luck!

Average is around 360 with about 240 offered acceptances for a final class of 120. Same as everywhere else in Florida (excepting the new programs).

The office receives around 14,000 applications each year....so it's more of a volume thing than anything else. I wouldn't take it personally, but do know that they keep tract of when you don't follow directions, and that DOES screw you over.

14,000? I thought it was more like 4,000. Correct me if I'm wrong.

But still, REALLY REALLY competitive

Accepted!!!!!!!!! Got the call from Dr. Brooks earlier today... Interviewed 12/15 and was extremely impressed. Good luck!!!

Just interviewed at USF yesterday and I was really impressed with not just the school but the organization and effort out into my interview day! It really feels like they want ME to go there!

Keeping my fingers crossed, love this school!:xf:

Anybody interview on January 19th at USF COM? I did, and I'd like to coordinate when we get replies, kthx.

Today via snail mail and phone call a little later (yes, I pretended to be surprised).

Interviewed 1/5/2010.

Interviewed Feb 2 as an OOS from CA and incredibly impressed with Interview Day and the University. I really think I would attend given offer despite $53,000/year but does anyone know % of Acceptance Rate from Interviews specifically from OOS ???

Once invited for an interview you are essentially on the same plane as everyone else.

Congrats to all the new acceptances! A few of us have started a C/o 2014 thread over on the allopathic boards! Stop by and say hey!

I'm currently on the edge of my seat. Please :😛rays:: please...USF...please...

Saw pretty much all the interviewees today when I was on campus after LCE...I think they all saw me in the lecture room watching the prior day's class before I headed out. Not many questions asked. Someone asked what the tour guide (fellow MS1) didn't like. I hope the interviews went well...I really only talked to one of the interviewees and I didn't recognize the two people interviewing her. Can't say I'm on campus much or deal with the admin...

I had my interview here today and was just blown away. I knew that this was ultimately where I wanted to go just because I already go to USF, but the whole interview day totally reaffirmed it and gave me a million more reasons to go there...awesome and friendly students, great curriculum, fabulous facilities, LCE sounds AWESOME, they have a scholarly concentration in medical education which is great for me since I love teaching and would definitely consider that route. Just a great school all around. And my interviewers were incredible. I love how they paired all of us with someone we would have stuff to talk about (eg: i'm a psych major interested in child psych and one of my interviewers was a child psychologist)...that alone made the interviews WAY less stressful because you aren't trying to pull stuff out of your ass to say.

I'm in love. Please don't let me down USF!

Bump.

Did anyone interview on Jan 19th? If so, have you heard replies?

kthx. plz.😛

Ya, no reply yet. Good luck, hopefully we hear back very soon as I'd be beyond ecstatic if I were accepted here at USF after the impressive interview day.

According to my calculations (Egon Spengler impression), we should receive acceptances next Friday by mail, and a phone call should occur around 6 pm.

In any case, I will post as soon as I hear from them, gatorsniper, I'm counting on you.

I guess I'll post too. How'd you figure that? They said 2-4 weeks but I'm sure you've heard from people with a similar delay? Hope you're right! I will say I had a friend interview on the 5th of Jan and the acceptance was received on Saturday the 30th. Dr. Brooks does call on weekends and this is the weekend after the 3rd week, same time frame as when my friend heard so, it's not impossible to hear over this weekend. Good luck

I figure because the last posting was a response in 4 weeks, that I have read. It's usually 30 days after interview, but after christmas was 6 weeks for them to respond. I could be wrong, I hope I am!

But what were your friend's stats?

Hey, guys! I interview on the 16th of Feb. Secondary was complete sometime in December. Had it in sooner but one of my letter of recommendation writers was a procrastinator of the worst kind. 🙁

Any who, I e-mailed the Adrienne Kinsella directly about updating my application. I told her my interview date and asked when it would be appropriate to send the material.

Her reply: You can feel free to send them to me at anytime. Email is easiest. 🙂 Have a great day.

So, I don't know who's being mean, but you might have better luck e-mailing her directly.

Anyone else interviewing on the 16th?

You are only allowed to update your application AFTER you have been invited to interview.

hey i dont know if any current USF med students check this thread but i have a question about housing...i know that they are going to give us some information, prob not a lot, in the next few months about suggestions on where to live...but do most med students end up living in apartment complexes where they you pay rent and everything or do a lot of them end up living in the 3rd party dorms...you know those companies that are basically dorms just off campus...i of course would only live with other med students...i dont want any undergrads heh.

just wondering because the nice places always go fast...whether its an apartment or 3rd party dorm...and so i really think march/april is not too early to sign up...

I'm not a med student, but I go to USF. I've lived on-campus (which I wouldn't recommend for a med student as that's all undergrad), off-campus in the "3rd party dorms" as you call them, and currently I live off-campus in a regular apartment complex. There are TONS of places within a 5 mile radius of the campus. Those that are literally right across the street from campus tend to be the 3rd party dorm type. They aren't affiliated with USF in anyway (that I know of at least), but they do their rent the same way - you pay one fee per month with everything (electricity/water/cable/internet) included. I don't know many grad/med students that live in them, but I'm sure some do as those places are open to the public as well as students. They tend to be the cheaper places (I paid about $600 a month for a 3/2 townhome). If you go north of the campus to the area called New Tampa, you get the nicer apartment complexes that are obviously more expensive and don't include everything. To me, the area is a lot nicer (and safer) than the area right around the campus. Traffic getting from there to the campus can be hellish though, as you'd be going the same direction as most do during rush hour. However, I don't think it'd really take you all that long to get from New Tampa to campus (10-15 min maybe).

There are other options, obviously. You can live in downtown south Tampa. Depending on where in downtown you are, it can be extremely expensive. I personally don't like downtown Tampa only because of how confusing it is to get around. Too many one way streets for me. Getting from there to campus will take longer too. I live in Brandon, which is just south of Tampa. My commute is about 20-25 min one way. I don't mind it, and I love it here. It's an up and coming area that's growing, but not too big. There are tons of places in Brandon to choose from as well, most are reasonably priced.

So that's my 2 cents (or more like 25 cents, haha). If you have more specific questions about housing around the campus, you can ask me as I've researched pretty much every single one in my search for the right place to live.

Apartments and houses off campus. No one lives in the 3rd party dorms. It's just too loud.

So I just saw a missed call from USF today. Please tell me what this means so that I don't spend all night freaking out. Do they call people for rejections?
